For ages 8 and up, students will learn to play through easy songs and exercises. Sight reading, note recognition and good playing technique are also taught to maximize progress into more difficult pieces.

After the basics are established, we will then move toward the kind of music the student is most interested in learning to play, whether classical or contemporary in nature.

Lessons proceed at a easy pace, and moved forward based on the student's understanding. No artificial pace is employed to "push" progress forward beyond the student's ability to address and learn.

Feel free to ask questions before signing up for lessons.

Please note: For children under 8 years old, you will need to contact me prior to scheduling lessons (via the "Ask A Question" feature) to discuss their particular needs and readiness to begin this regimen.

About Geoff
I am a professional musician with a career spanning 40 years (touring and studio work), and 30 years teaching music.

What do you want to learn? How far you go is up to you!

*** Lesson Details ***
BEGINNING students start with the fundamentals, what you must know in order to begin playing songs, all the right ingredients to create a solid foundation. You will be encouraged to study and to venture into the unknown, using what you're learning as a springboard to discover new things.

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED players will be assessed on knowledge and abilities; areas of struggle and what is desired to be learned. Within a couple weeks, you will reap the benefits with new ideas bubbling to the surface moving you closer to your goals, with emphasis that short term goals are important as well.

Everyone learns at a different pace. But
with patience and persistence, if you do the work, there will be results that can be measured, and you will achieve success!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide an amplifier for guitar and bass students, and have a piano for piano students.

*** Specialties ***
Having played many styles over the years, I am able to play in most of the popular forms. All music is based on the same fundamental things. It's how they are used that defines a given style.

I teach using a combination of your books and Hal Leonard method books depending on your level. I specialize in playing ergonomically and musically so that you can enjoy making music!

About Julia
I have a Master’s in Opera Performance from the Boston and New England Conservatories as well as graduating from Vocal Performance programs at Boston University and Western Washington University. I have sung professionally with Boston Lyric Opera, Children’s Theater Companies, churches and synagogue and have toured on the east coast as well as Athens, Greece. Premiering new music is a specialty. I can help you prepare your pieces for auditions.  My students have successful auditions for college opera and music theater programs, and as choir soloists.

Students gain a larger vocal range and an easy, natural way of singing whether it is in a rock band, choir or as a soloist. Together we find the joy of singing while building a solid technique.

I have worked with small children as a Musikgarten teacher and have toured artist residency
programs which introduce children to music and theater in schools.   I was adjunct faculty at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and local music studios as well as maintaining my private teaching practice.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am persistent and positive! Working and performing with singers and master teachers has helped me to be a resourceful teacher who understands the process of becoming a singer. I believe that a sense of fun and play helps you to accomplish your goals quickly.  For beginners you will learn how the voice works and how to care for and develop your instrument, I recommend adults take 45" - 1 hour lessons weekly for skill building. The price of lessons DECREASES by 10% after each 5 lesson purchased for the first 15 lessons. Studio policy is located at VaaraMusic.com. We will choose music that interests you and helps to build your voice starting with basics before moving to more complex and challenging music. Understanding music theory and sight-reading will help you get the most out of your singing. After 3 - 6 months you should have a good command of breathing and an understanding of how to sing with an expressive tone. For the advanced student, I can help you work on trouble spots and give you tools to help with the changes that voices naturally go through.  I look forward to giving you my full focus and celebrating your growth and accomplishments!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Condo w/ open area with piano. Visitor's parking lot w/ seating in studio for parents to listen. Parents with younger siblings can use play areas outside.
Basic library of vocal music, giving the student a way to sample different kinds of songs before purchasing books or downloading songs on their own. Music stand, iPhone plug-in/Amp for accompaniments and examples you want me to hear.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a basic library of vocal music at my home studio and will bring targeted books with me. Students should print out their favorite popular songs from such services as Music Notes website.
I expect my students to provide a keyboard, music stand and notebook as well as a low distraction environment.

*** Specialties ***
As an opera and musical theater, Oratorio and church singer, I help singers of all levels improve within their genre from popular music to opera. A good singing technique will help performers in any style stay healthy and enjoy an expressive singing instrument.

Beginning students, intermediate, some advanced, including theory and composition, performance, improvisation, notation, acoustic and electronic keyboards.

About Suzan
I started learning piano as a child, but it was in high school that I realized I really wanted to pursue playing keyboards, because it allowed me a way to express myself. I was hooked. Later on I attended Mt. Hood Community College, played keyboards and sang in choirs and vocal jazz. After graduating on the President's List with an Associates Degree in Special Studies Music, I directed the college Gospel Ensemble for two years before working full-time at a large local church, where I was a Music Director, Worship Leader, and keyboard player. In addition to vocal and keyboard work, I enjoyed directing large and small choirs and ensembles, band directing, orchestra conducting, and arranging many styles of music. It is exciting to experience what can happen when people work together musically--the whole becomes even greater than the sum of
the parts!

I've been teaching piano for 20+ years now, and I love partnering with students to help them grow musically and realize their dreams. Some of my students have gone on to be professionals or teachers, and some are playing the music they love with their friends. Others are playing in their churches or in bands, and some play simply for personal enjoyment.

If we get the opportunity to work together, you (or your child) will discover that I am patient and encouraging. My desire is to bring your musical goals into focus through education and creative participation.

What is your dream? Playing classical, rock, playing in a band, writing your own music? I'd love to help you realize that dream!

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe piano instruction should be fun and casual, yet challenging and inspiring. In our lessons, you'll learn proper technique, sight-reading, improvising, and the music theory behind it. I utilize popular piano methods and contribute additional resources, and I design lessons to help you reach your music goals, whether your dream is to play with others, write your own music, or play your favorites for personal enjoyment. You'll explore many music genres, from classical to rock to jazz, including a large dose of your preferred styles. If you play an electronic keyboard, we'll incorporate features of your instrument to increase your rhythm and song-writing skills. Aspiring songwriters can learn skills like chart writing and computer notation. You'll learn how technology--even your smart phone--can help!

The student is responsible to purchase required books--usually lesson and theory, and occasionally a recital book. These usually cost between 5 and 7 dollars each and can be purchased locally. Bring lined paper with you for your lesson notes. I'll supply staff paper, music and any additional lesson materials, as needed. I will encourage you to purchase a metronome (the musician's friend) if you do not have an instrument with rhythms or metronome.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I teach both at students' homes (on your instrument) or at my home, where I have a Yamaha CP70 electric grand piano. The lessons are in the front living room, where seating is available and parents are welcome to observe the lesson. I have a laptop with Sibelius Notation and YouTube at the ready, as well as a mic, mixer and speakers, should they be needed. There may even be a studio cat nearby to inspire you!

*** Travel Equipment ***
If lessons are at your home, it is important that you have a practice instrument, which we will use in our lessons. If you need to purchase a piano or are exploring the world of electronic keyboards, I can help you with the many choices available and recommend instruments in your price range. I can also help you become familiar with your keyboard and those features that will be useful to you.

*** Specialties ***
For individual lessons, I prefer using the Alfred Method (beginning through intermediate), and have also used the Bastien method, and some others. I teach both sight-reading and/or improvisational skills, along with musical theory, according to the student's needs and goals. I'm comfortable in multiple styles (classical, pop, rock, folk, some jazz and blues).

I believe that students can only learn properly in the right atmosphere, with an enthusiastic, motivated instructor. If the experience is not fun the student will not excel in what they do. I believe the students should periodically have a chance to show what they are learning by performing in recitals with others.

About Jack
I started taking Violin and Piano lessons at age 7. By the age of 12 I was performing recitals and was Concert Master of my elementary school orchestra. In high school I was first chair, and learned to conduct the orchestra. I attended Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield Missouri. I created my own string quartet while studying there. I studied Violin under Mr. Harold King, who was a good friend of Jascha Heifetz and was his roommate in Chicago where they studied music together. I have studied Violin and Piano with many other instructors, including Tony Bennet and Peggy Lee's recording pianist. I studied modern and jazz piano with Paul Horn's Jazz Group. I was vocal coach for 3 years for the Pasadena, California Ambassador choir.I have taught for approx. 50 years privately and in various colleges and schools. I was a co-founder
and owner of Pasadena School of music in Pasadena California . I was an instructor for Beacock Music in Vancouver, Washington. I have been a member or the Clark College Orchestra and have performed in several concerts with them.I currently perform all over Oregon and Washington, and perform weekly for various functions in the area.

JACK IS TERRIFIC!

I wish we had found Jack years ago. We hired Jack specifically to help my daughter prepare for an audition. The audition was a success! Jack's approach to teaching is no nonsense and precise, but he has a warm and gentle way about him that motivated my daughter in a way that others haven't. Aside from his teaching ability, I was pleasantly surprised with Jack's sense of urgency and flexibility in responding to special scheduling needs. This is the first time I have been inspired to write an on-line testimony. I hope it helps other students discover Jack's tutoring.

Both of my daughters take lessons from Sonya. Previously we were at an academy in Cedar Mill and much of the love of music was being lost in an overly structured environment. Now that my girls are with Sonya, they are playing the piano for fun again and their confidence is building. Sonya is a fantastic teacher that keeps it light with the kids and has a natural ability to encourage and make people feel comfortable so they can perform to their greatest potential.

Omg!!! She is a great teacher, I have been learning piano with her for 5 years, and she is the nicest teacher ever. She gives feedback, for what she liked, and what you can improve on. She has made me learn that with lots of time great things can happen, and to shoot for the stars. Everyday she will ask "How are you" and I would say what happened in school like she was my mom, and she would nod patiently. I Think she is the best teacher ever. If you are looking for a Piano teacher she should certainly be one of the options. THANKYOU SONYA!!!!

I've been taking lessons for 7 months now -- I am always excited to have a new lesson and Jonathan is a great teacher!!! If I was looking for a new teacher I'd choose him in a hot minute. Thank you so much for opening my world to music. BTW I'm a retired 65 year old male - Jonathan also taught my 7 year old great nephew and was wonderful with him. Unfortunately his attention span was that of a gnat and we'll try again in a few months. Right now he's more interested in catching snakes in the backyard than practicing -- and the bar was very low on what was being required. (15 mins a day) I'd say "Did you practice?" "I think I practiced." "Well either you did or you didn't" "I think I probably practiced." Love him

As a music teacher my primary responsibility is the inspiration of my students. to build, in their imaginations, a pallet of sounds, textures and motifs, and then to equip them with a technique capable of drawing these out with absolute fidelity.

My goal is redundancy as quickly as possible. I achieve this by practicing with the student at every stage of his/her development. If you want to play the piano like a concert pianist, then you must learn to practice like one.

About Todd
I am a professional pianist, teacher and composer. I graduated from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2004 with a bachelor in performance.
I can teach all styles and skill levels weather you are taking lessons for the first time, or weather you need help with a Rachmaninoff concerto. I can also help you write and develop your own music. I specialize in piano technique and learning to play effortlessly.
My lessons are nontraditional in the sense that I work side by side with the student whilst he/she is learning a piece. I break down the music into manageable "bites" and we practice it together. In this manner I am able to demonstrate the notes, tone and character in the music and I am essentially teaching the student how to practice. I am also able to teach my students how to play virtuoso passages with fluidity and wi
