I am a Hip Hop Artist and Educator. My lessons are tailored to the goals and aspirations of each student. We will collaborate on a plan, based on your purposes for seeking guidance. As a student, my lessons will give you tools that you'll be able to use daily for the rest of your life. I will teach you methods and help you build routines that if applied consistently will empower you as a lyricist, performer, recording artist, and anything else you decide to pursue. I will help you to position your craft as a protective factor for your mental health, (how you think, act, and feel. This will be one of the most important aspects of our collaboration. These lessons will build your self-confidence and help you get to know yourself. I apply rules of discipline, dedication and determination learned as a Division 1 College Basketball Player. I share strategies from my own creative process and things I've learned teaching others. I teach rapping to beginners, intermediate, advanced, and touring professionals. During your first lesson I do a computer analysis of your voice, I find out what your goals are in singing, what your favorite kinds of music are, and I take you in the direction you want to go and show you how to get there in the shortest possible time. I always record my students so that they know how they sound to others. I also make a CD of them singing to background music if they wish, included in the cost of the lessons for no extra charge. Learn to sing beautifully, and most important, emotionally. Learn the parts of your vocal instrument, How each works, How they work together. Develop Breath support (80% of singing). Learn how to do the Singer's Formant, "Squillo" (that "ringing" sound of professionals). Learn how to conquer nervousness, learn Resonance, Overtones, Vibrato, How to sing high notes, Learn the "singing vowels", and more. I would rather teach singing than eat chocolate, and if you knew how much I like chocolate, you'd know my passion for teaching singing. I've been studying voice since third grade, and teaching singing for eighteen years. I've had nine singing teachers myself, so I know just how you feel. I get you comfortable, and I listen closely to what you want to do and where you want to go with your singing voice. My students learn all the important aspects of singing right away, rather than drawing them out over time. I teach all styles of singing including Pop, Blues, Classical, Rock, Jazz, Scat Singing, Belting, Country and Western, and Rap. I teach singing in English, Italian, Spanish, and German. As my singing student you'll have access to the four books I've written on singing: SING BETTER FAST: a complete but concise treatise on vocal technique (It includes a Practice CD with a free recording studio program to install into your computer); HOW TO CONQUER NERVOUSNESS FOR SINGERS, HOW TO GET STANDING OVATIONS FOR SINGERS, and SING BETTER FAST 2, ADVANCED SINGING. I believe these four books are the most current and relevant works on these subjects available today. My Bachelor's and Master's Degrees are from California State University Dominguez Hills. Put your singing voice in my hands. You'll love the results.

Hip Hop & Rap highlights and demands excellence in one of my personal favorite aspects of music: rhythm! As a singer who started out as a drummer, rhythm was everything. The complex rhythms in these genres make me come alive as an artist and a teacher. Syncopation, one of the concepts in rhythm can be a challenging thing to understand but it's at the core of every interesting rap vocal. These vocals 'dig into' the music as another instrument in a way that they don't as strongly in other genres. Also the rhyming schemes used by various artists in these genres can be so challenging but SO rewarding when you can master them!

There aren't too many schools for rapping that I know of. I learned the way most people learn: on the streets of the city they live in. I've listened heavily to records across Hip-Hop history and I practice MCing regularly as part of my work as a song improviser. I combine techniques from Classical Poetry to modern vocabulary to raise the ceiling on what is possible for an MC. Things you can expect in rap lessons from me... -Freestyle: we'll build your confidence and toolset for off-the-top rhyming -Verse-writing: I'll examine your verses and teach you to refine the writing and delivery to help you reach your audience -Music Theory: most rappers don't even consider this, but I emphasize understanding music and knowing how to improve your technique and writing through deep understanding of poetry and music theory -Career Advice: I make sure you get the most bang for your buck when you study rap with me
