As an educator, I strive to provide my students with the tools that they will need to explore the direction that they want to take with their instrument. This can include from enjoying drumming as a hobby, performing in small jazz ensembles, recording electronic and acoustic drums in major recording studios, to performing with a full orchestra! There is literally no limit to what you can do.

My focus is to get hobbyists to enjoy performing drums in the comfort of their own home or with friends, and to have my professionally-minded students go out into the world of performing and recording music. All of these environments are where the ultimate joy of playing an instrument can be expressed.

As a gigging and studio musicians, I understand what it takes to get to the stage or studio, apply oneself in that environment, and come away with a satisfying experience that you can then build upon for the rest of your life.

About James

Hi! I have been a drumset educator for over 3 decades. I benefited from formal education on the drumset, and I want to pass that along to you so you can experience the full joy that this wonderful instrument can bring you! Jim has been a fantastic teacher to our son. He explains everything patiently and approaches his lessons very systematically. He selects songs that incorporate essential drumming skills (e.g. songs that include doubles, paradiddles, accented notes, etc.). This way, the the student is able to develop an understanding of how theory fits practice.

Give anyone a drum and they will instantly know what to do. Drums are meant to be hit, and for those who love to hit things and make loud noises. Bongo drum lessons are an easy way to introduce students to the world of drumming, rhythm and music.

The goal is listening for cues, hearing patterns and feeling rhythm and beat. Ideally, each student has their own drum. Begin with a simple repeat and answer pattern. You hit the drum two times, they repeat. Gradually add to the complexity of the patterns, so they must listen intently. Add some simple rhythms, such as 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1, with a strong emphasis on the 1.

Bongos are a great way for young students, even young children 4 or 5 years old, to develop coordination and strong sense of rhythm. I've played drums and percussion for over 15 years, in many different bands, styles, and genres. I studied music (classical guitar) at University of Central Florida and I've picked up many other instruments since. I love teaching instruments to students young and old.

About Gio

I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums. I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is wh

Drums are such a great instrument to start on. Having a solid foundation of rhythm goes a long way in music. It transfers to all the other instruments. I like to begin with the basics stick control and rudiments. Drumset is a great place to go after that or hand percussion such as djembe, conga, or hand drums. I also teach steel drums. Lets get you drumming!

Private Bongo Lessons Near You

When you learn to play bongo, you'll actually be learning to play two small open-bottomed drums. The bongo, an Afro-Cuban percussion instrument, consists of two drums one slightly smaller called the hembra (female) and a slightly larger drum called the macho (male). Along with the conga and batá drums, the bongo drum is one of the most popular Cuban hand drums.

Although the bongo drums look relatively simple, they're capable of producing complex, sophisticated rhythms when beat by a professional congosero. The lively intricate rhythms of the bongo drum are most commonly heard in salsa, Afro-Cuban jazz, and son Cubano music. If you decide to take bongo classes, you'll soon learn to create rhythms of your own unique style that can stand alone or be played along with a full band.

Why Learn to Play Bongo?

Drumming — especially with a tactile drum that's played without mallets (like the bongo drums) — is highly beneficial. This type of rhythmic percussion playing is great exercise. A spirited drumming session or practice can elevate the heart rate and actually count as aerobic exercise. This helps your heart and cardiovascular system stay in good shape.

Drumming exercise also releases endorphins (feel-good, relaxing hormones). As a result, playing the bongos can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and help fight depression. These endorphins also have analgesic effects, meaning they can reduce the amount of pain your brain perceives and that you experience. As a result, playing the bongos can help relieve pain caused by chronic and acute physical ailments.

The practice of focusing on drumming and keeping an intricate beat also seems to synchronize the brain, using many different parts to play in rhythm, count, and coordinate the right and left hands. Drumming not only improves your brain's ability to concentrate on all sorts of tasks, but the focus it requires also induces deep relaxation.

How to Learn Bongo Fast and What You'll Study in Bongo Classes

It's simple to find free bongo lessons online. The best way to learn to play bongo, however, is with a private teacher. With immediate feedback from a private bongo tutor, you'll overcome challenges quickly, avoid developing detrimental bad habits as you learn, and pick up new techniques fast.

Plus, private teachers completely customize lessons to keep their students motivated, interested, and learning at their desired pace. No two private lessons are exactly alike, and tutors tailor course content to meet their students' needs. For example, teaching methods and content covered in bongo lessons for adults differs greatly from that taught in bongo classes for children.

Sample Curriculum for Beginner Bongo

If you have little or no previous experience playing the bongo drums, then beginner bongo classes are right for you! In Bongo for beginners, you'll be introduced to all the basic skills and concepts you need to eventually become a master bongosero. Your teacher might choose to cover some of the following topics:

  • Learn the proper way to hold the bongos
  • Practice with standard rudiments (exercises)
  • Perfect four basic strokes: open tone, slap, heel-tip movement, and muted tone
  • Start out with the basic Martillo (hammer) rhythm
  • Understanding time signatures and reading rhythmic notations

Sample Curriculum for Intermediate Bongo

If you're familiar with the basics of bongo playing, then intermediate lessons are right for you. In intermediate lessons, you'll sharpen your playing techniques and explore new rhythms, as you continue to tackle increasingly complex music. Your bongo teacher might choose to cover the following topics:

  • Improve your hand-to-hand coordination
  • Learn to create smooth rhythms
  • Rolls, paradiddles, and drags
  • Introduction to the Borello and Guaguanco rhythms

Sample Curriculum for Advanced Bongo

If you're already a skilled bongosero, but would like the opportunity to perfect your skills, techniques, and to explore your own personal style of beating the bongo drums, then advanced lessons are right for you. Advanced course content depends greatly on each individual student's interests and goals, but your bongo tutor might choose to cover the following topics:

  • Soloing and improvisation
  • Sight reading
  • Study rhythm variations
  • Genre-based study
  • Audition coaching and performance preparation

How to Find a Bongo Teacher Near You

The first step to becoming a skilled bongosero is pairing up with a great teacher. Luckily, finding a private bongo tutor on TakeLessons is easy! With a quick search, you'll be directed to an extensive list of highly qualified and experienced instructors who offer private lessons near you and online. Before choosing the bongo teacher who's right for you, we recommend reading several tutor profiles and reviews left by other students like you.

The cost of bongo lessons varies, but TakeLessons teachers base rates on the length and frequency of lessons. With so many teachers to choose from, you'll be able to find a teacher who fits both your budget and your schedule. Plus, investing in private lessons is sure to pay off, as you pick up new techniques, quickly overcome challenges, and begin beating the bongos like true bongosero!
