DJing is both a technical skill and an art form. I will teach you both. Over the course of many years and many house parties, bars, clubs, festivals, and underground venues I have learned how to set a mood and move a dancefloor. I can share with you the techniques & insight I have gained along my journey.

About Mark

My name is Mark. I am a DJ, music producer, and instructor based in Portland, OR. I have been producing electronic music since 2008 and DJing since 2012. My history includes: operating a music blog in 2008 to ride the wave of electronic music's popularization, co-founding an online community of

I had the pleasure of working with Mark over the course of ten weeks recently as I wanted to radically improve my abilities as a DJ. From the moment we began, Mark and I connected over similar musical tastes, and he understood my goals that I was setting for myself.

Mark worked with me by giving me stylistic feedback and walked me through technical details that gave me the comfort to start DJing my own sets. In this era where distance learning is the norm and virtual broadcasting is getting more commonplace, the work that I did with Mark has allowed me to operate with confidence. I began doing weekly streams (which had rough beginnings!) that became were the basis for work we were doing together.

I would highly recommend someone who needs help getting started DJing and also needs someone to bounce music ideas off of as they're honing in their craft. Thank you again, Mark!

"At the start of the quarantine I was having difficulty getting the feel for anything and everything DJing. It was brutal!, intimidating, terrifying, and sort of infuriating. Robert and Michael took the time to really break down the flow of what you need to do, how many beats do you count out, where the bass knob should be. They did everything to make transitions and blends super easy at the beginner level. I am still taking classes with them, and can’t wait to learn more. They have truly helped to boost my confidence

"My son (a beginner) loves his lessons, and talks about his next session every time. My worried son was so nervous for his first lesson, but Dylan put him at ease, and then proceeded to start from the beginning, giving my son the much needed confidence and began at the beginning with set-up, getting to know him, explaining the software, and was so down to earth; and gave him the one-on-one, a person could only dream of. He is an A++ teacher with a resume too long to list. I highly recommend him and I hope to meet in person one day... DJing Lessons

If you love to be entertain, then DJ lessons are for you! Most people choose to be DJs because they love music, being the life of the party, remixing music, or the idea of writing their own music and playing it for an excited audience. Learning how to DJ and actually making a name for yourself as a DJ, though, are two different things.

For those who're unafraid of hard work, self-promotion, and hustle of the gig economy, becoming a DJ, getting regular gigs, and separating yourself from the crowd is definitely possible. You can make a name for yourself in DJing just like the big names of the DJ world — Diplo, Skrillex, David Guetta, and Calvin Harris. You can also choose to keep your DJing small-time, making and promoting music locally to infuse your local music scene with your own auditory art.

Why Learn to DJ?

You can learn to DJ just for the pure love of the art form, but there're also plenty of professional opportunities for all kinds of DJs. Learning the skills of a DJ opens up the following opportunities:

  • Club DJ - work beats regularly at a club
  • Radio DJ - the original DJs who entertain us over the radio waves
  • Performer - take to the turntables on stage
  • Mobile DJ - work local events like weddings and corporate events
  • Producer - write and perform your own music

It's a good idea to think about the kind of DJ you want to be before you start lessons because your instructor will be able to show you the skills that'll end up being most valuable to you.

The Best Way to Learn to DJ and What You'll Study

Although it's easy to find free DJ classes online, the best way to learn is with personalized instruction from a private DJ tutor. You'll overcome challenges quickly and pick up new concepts fast, as you receive immediate feedback, learning the tools and techniques that are relevant to your goals and interests. Plus, no two private lessons are alike. For example, DJ classes for children differ greatly in terms of teaching methods and course content from DJ lessons for adults. In private lessons, you'll learn the topics that interest you most at a pace that's comfortable for you!

Sample Curriculum for Beginner DJ Classes

If you're just getting starting or no previous experience, then beginner lessons are right for you. Your DJ teacher will introduce you to all the basic concepts of DJing and help you find your way around your new software and equipment. In beginner lessons, your teacher might choose to cover the following topics:

  • Setting up your equipment and selecting software
  • Learning the basics of Abelton Live or another digital audio workstation
  • Introduction to your DJ deck
  • Kick it old-school and learn to beat match on vinyl turntables
  • Learn how to sample and do it legally
  • Introduction to music theory for successful mixing

Sample Curriculum for Intermediate Lessons

If you already have some DJ experience and feel comfortable with the basics of DJing and using mixing software, then intermediate lessons are right for you. You'll learn new skills, techniques, and approaches to DJing to take your entertainment and creativity to the next level. In intermediate lessons, your tutor might cover the following topics:

  • Perfecting transitions
  • Mixing techniques (seamless fade, infinite loop, and tempo transition)
  • Key blending and matching
  • Using filters and effects
  • Adjusting high, mid, and low frequency volumes
  • Production and sound engineering

Sample Curriculum for Advanced Classes

Advanced lessons are intended for students who already have quite a bit of DJ experience. Whether you want to workshop mixes, be introduced to different software or equipment, or learn new crowd-pleasing skills, you'll hone and perfect your talent in advanced lessons. Topics studied in advanced lessons vary greatly depending on the student's individual interests and goals, but your teacher might cover the following topics:

  • Developing and honing your style
  • Music business, gigging, and self-promotion
  • Developing stage presence
  • Learning to connect with your audience
  • Audition coaching
  • Performance preparation

How to Find a DJ Teacher Near You

If you're ready to learn how to DJ at live events, then you need to choose a DJ tutor first. Luckily, finding a teacher on TakeLessons is easy. A quick search will direct you to a variety of DJ teachers who offer private DJ classes near you and online to students of all abilities and ages. Before choosing the teacher who's right for you, take a look at several profiles and read through reviews left by other students. It's also a good idea to select a teacher who specializes in teaching with your preferred software.

If you're concerned about the price of private lessons, you'll find that they're well worth the investment. Working with a private DJ teacher, you'll pick up new concepts fast and see your skills improve quickly. With private lessons, you'll be DJing for live crowds before you know it!

Beginner vs Intermediate vs Expert DJing Lessons

Private DJing lessons with a TakeLessons instructor are tailored to each student based on their current skill level, and goals. Beginner students learn the basics of electronic music, music production, and mixing techniques. From there, the difficulty increases in order to properly challenge and motivate intermediate and advanced level DJs to develop greater skills, to stretch their preconceived limitations, and to ultimately gain more satisfaction and paid opportunities from the DJing.

We understand advancing DJs may also have professional goals, so our teachers can counsel you to increase your chances of getting more and higher-paying gigs. You might even decide to become a TakeLessons DJing instructor and get paid to teach other aspiring disc jockeys like you.

DJing Lessons for College Students

Let’s be honest, private lessons aren’t always ideal for college students who are generally tight on budget, time, and commitments. However, that doesn’t mean you should stop learning, practicing, and improving at any skill or hobby. You can still work on DJing in your free time, and even work the local bars and college events to make some cash. Besides, playing music reduces stress, helps you stay creative, and helps you improve your listening skills.

DJing Lessons for Working Adults & Parents

By now, you’ve already decided whether to stick with the DJing or to drop it. If you’re one of the lucky few that stuck with it, in spite of having an extremely busy schedule with work and family obligations, congratulations. Contrary to popular belief, taking the time out for regular DJing practice has tremendous benefits, even for the busiest of people.

We believe that DJing practice as an adult is more productive than it seems because it clears your head, it builds patience, discipline, and concentration skills which you can transfer over to other parts of life, and it keeps your hand-eye coordination sharp. It also keeps you committed to learning and improvement, which again, are transferable traits to professional life. As role models, parents taking active classes of any subject shows kids the importance of pursuing personal interests for life.

When you become good at DJing, you can even supplement your income with paid gigs on the weekends. Wedding DJs, for example, easily make several thousand dollars per event.
