While I teach music reading, as any other good teacher should do, for those students who are interested in learning to play by ear, I also concentrate on improvisation and playing from chord charts. Fun and effective, my approach will help you learn quickly and enjoy the process!
For over 30 years, I've had the privilege to have worked with thousands of performers who study with me from all over the world. I teach in-studio at my two locations in Houston and in The Woodlands, Texas. I also work with students who come to me from all over the globe via online over-the-web Skype lessons.
Originally from Detroit, I enjoyed being a "Jack of all styles" singer/musician for over 15 years. I was a professional musician performing Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Gospel, Musical Theater, Commercial and Studio work, along with being very involved in Contemporary Christian music. While I very much loved to perform, I found myself drawn much more to the joy of teaching. I have been singing in Choirs and Bands for a number of years and learned more about my voice and singing properly in a 45 minute session with Eric than I have in all my years of performing. I now understand why I have been struggling to sing in my upper register and Eric has put together a personalized program to help me develop my voice and gain back my vocal range. Regular practice: Students are required to practice 5 days a week. The more you practice, the better prepared you are for the lesson. The length of each daily practice session depends on the age or level of the student. Minimum daily practice requirements by age are:
Regular attendance to lessons: I want you to have correct music reading, playing, and good posture, and these cannot be achieved without regular guidance by the teacher. Regular attendance to lessons also insures that no change of schedule will be made to yours because of someone else’s lesson cancellation.
Hsin-Jung has been teaching and performing in both Taiwan and the U.S. for years. She is a patient, professional music instructor, and would like to bring the joy of classical music to all students.
Hsin-Jung T., a native of Taipei, Taiwan began her piano studies at the age of five, and composition studies at 18. She attended the Hua-Kang Art School in Taipei, where she majored in piano performance. In 1996 she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Music Theory and Composition from the Taipei National University of the Arts, Taiwan, where she studied with Nan-Chang Chien. Hsin-Jung then came to the United States in the fall of 1997 to study at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College of City University of New York (CUNY), where she received her Master of Music Degree in 1999 while studying wit
h Bruce Saylor. In 2000, she studied at the PhD-DMA program in music composition at the CUNY Graduate Center, where she is studying with Tania Leon and Bernadette Speech.
Through her involvement in programs such as the Taiwan-Japan Exchange Concert “Euterpe Spring ‘99”, conductors Sung Su Jeong, Chun-Fung Lee, and Lance Inouye as well as the Juilliard String Ensemble, the Contemporary Chamber Orchestra of Taipei, and others have performed Hsin-Jung's compositions in Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. In May 2000 Hsin-Jung held a program of her chamber music at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall. Among her recent works are two film collaborations, Poetry of A Painter, a clarinet solo piece composed for a short film on the life of the artist Fernando Gerassi; the score for Allatonceness, a multimedia performance where the composer also conducted; music design and improvisation for a documentary film Turning Japanese; music for Palace of Loneliness, a play by Dorothy Tan, produced by MultiStages, Inc. and HERE Theatre for the Performing Arts in New York; The Music Composition Award for Capturing The Spirit of the promotive film from Asian American/ Asian Research Institute in New York (2002); and the score for a documentary film Ocean and People produced by Civilization Explorer Association [CEA] (2005). In 2006 Hsin-Jung was invited as a guest composer and held a solo composition recital at Tarrant County College South Campus, Fort Worth, Texas.
In 2008, Hsin-Jung relocated to Houston, where she has been actively contributing her compositions, as well as performing as an improvisational artist.
*** Lesson Details *** I am patient, and detailed. High concentration and certain skills are necessary in learning classical music; thus, I will be focus on build up student's concentration, fingering skill (writing skill in composition), and understanding of music. Students will learn how to play in a beautiful tune, how to "listen" with both ears and heart, and how to concentrate on what they are doing, and most important -- enjoy what they are playing, and what they are composing!

I have been teaching this subject for over 16 years. The main curriculum for beginners is Alfred's Basic Piano Library. There are three beginner levels (beginner, late, adult) and one will be selected after the first meeting. For non-beginning students, the course of study will be developed based on past experience, current abilities, and goals. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is a part of subsequent lessons. Music is not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.
During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.
Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.
*** Lesson Details *** There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.
To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet. The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons. Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!
Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study. Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.
Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
IMPORTANT NOTES: • To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.
• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.
• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.
• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.
• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

I began my teaching career in college while earning a Bachelor's in Music from Southwestern University (magna cum laude). I currently play as a soloist and with groups including AURORA: Trio for Flute, Harp, and Cello, the Shimmer Flute Choir, and Sounds of Silver Flute Quartet. I am also an active member of the Music Teacher's National Association and volunteer coordinator of the Houston Flute Club.

I offer lessons that cover just about every aspect of playing the Western concert flute. Students can expect to become well-rounded musicians who are knowledgeable about flute technique, tone, music theory and history. I use a combination of the Rubank Method and Flute 101 books with handout supplements.
The biggest changes I've seen in my students after a few months is a better understanding of how to practice efficiently as well as improved tone. Furthermore, every year many of my students earn superior ratings of 1 on their UIL solos.
Every Spring my students and I participate in Flute Fest, a day-long celebration of all things flute, including concerts, masterclasses, and a solo and ensemble contest. A few weeks later we have our annual studio recital where everyone shows off their hard work.
A NOTE ABOUT WOODEN FLUTES
Occasionally I am asked to help students play wooden, non-western flutes. Although the very basic fundamentals are the same, I do not play these flutes and do not teach them.
Piano is not only fun to play for its own sake, but provides a foundation for all music making. Students will learn about proper posture and hand-positioning, note-reading, rhythm, and a little history as well, using the Piano Pronto book series.
Music Theory Lessons:
I can help students of any instrument better understand the fundamental concepts of music theory: scales, intervals, chords, part-writing, etc. Theory lessons take place at the piano to demonstrate concepts. However, students do not have to play piano to take theory lessons. I typically use a combination of the Master Theory curriculum and other handouts, unless the student is already working out of another textbook.
**Online theory lessons** use the same curriculum, but with the screen share feature to help my demonstrations.
During the summer I offer additional group classes on different subjects, including theory and ear-training. I try something new every year to provide a variety of opportunities for students to learn and grow in their musicianship.

Tchaikovsky Music Academy of Ukraine, Kiev’s House of Teachers and National Museum of Literature in Ukraine and many others. *** Practice guidance and expectations***
- Lesson’s regular attendance is very important to ensure student success.
- In order to progress satisfactorily, daily quality practice is necessary and required. Students should practice each day for the length of their lesson.
-Detailed assignments for each piece will be written weekly in student’s notebook. To help your child develop self-discipline and good practice habits, schedule a regular time for practice each day. The practice session can be done all at once or divided into two or more sessions. Younger children especially need help with their practicing.
-The practice environment should be treated as a studying place free from interruptions (family, friends, TV, phone, tablet, computer, etc.). Parents support and cooperation is a must for a child's musical growth.
*** Parental Responsibilities***
- Encourage progress! Many small steps throughout the year yield great results. Important note: Sometime during the course of taking piano lessons, your child may say something like, “I don’t want to practice,” or “I’m too tired to go to piano lessons,” or “I don’t want to go- I want to play with my friends,” “I want to quit,” etc. Just be aware that your child’s interest will probably not be consistent; but to be successful, you will need to be consistent in your encouragement and commitment to music instruction. In most cases, simply acknowledge your child’s comments, but then go on with your normal routine just as you would if you heard the comment, “I don’t want to brush my teeth,” “I don’t want to stop playing with my toys,” or “I don’t want to go to bed.”
- Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend lessons at any time, but SHOULD NOT interfere in the process of the lesson no matter how well intended it may be.
- Please don’t hesitate to communicate with the teacher any questions or concerns you may have about your child’s progress. Communication with parents is vital to a child’s progress. Please feel free to chat with your instructor during the lesson time. Your instructor will generally allot a few minutes at the beginning of each lesson to communicate with the Parent. We ask that you please keep in mind that we are not available beyond your scheduled time, so as not to impede on the lesson time of the next student. If you would like to discuss anything beyond, please feel free to email your teacher, or call and leave a message.
***Make-up policy*** Notify the teacher at least 24 hours in advance if the student cannot attend the lesson. There are no refunds for missed lesson. Occasionally the teacher might have schedule conflict due to performing activity. If a teacher is absent, a make-up lesson will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time. Scheduled make-up lessons missed by the student will not be made up.

I take a lot of pride in teaching each one of my students. I will work several hours preparing, practicing and finding helpful ways to instruct each child. Every student is an individual, with certain skills and abilities and my job is to find out how to unlock these abilities, so these students will be able to perform at their highest level. I research, practice and prepare for each lesson. Every student I teach is extremely important to me and I want the very best for them in their musical talent. I have students from early childhood to Musically advanced students preparing for college auditions. I love the excitement of my students preparing for the NFMC Gold Cup Competition, National Guild Auditions, TMTA festivals and competitions, as well as the TMTA Theory exams. Teaching Piano Lessons in Houston

Teaching Houston piano lessons has been more rewarding to me than any previous experience I have had. I used to live in a VERY small town in Kansas. My students wanted to learn piano, but that was pretty much as far as they could go. There weren’t events or contests, and opportunities to take their learned skills to play along with others were few and far between.
In Houston, the opportunities for my piano students are endless. There are piano classes at school, community groups for musicians, and even opportunities to play within their churches. Some of my proudest moments are when my students walk into their Houston piano lessons and tell me about a time when they played one of their songs for a friend, or that their family was in town and they were able to show them what they had learned.
I highly recommend that up-and-coming musicians and music teachers to take on some students of their own. From this experience, I have been able to hone in on my own music skills along with my students, as well as expand my contacts with people in the music industry and school districts. It is a very rewarding and humbling experience when someone calls or emails me to ask for lessons, advice, or even a performance because of the work I have put in with another student. The hard work and dedication you put in to your Houston piano lessons will open doors to opportunities which would not be available to you without this experience.
