Teaching Piano Lessons in Houston

By Patty N. - Houston Piano Teacher

Teaching Houston piano lessons has been more rewarding to me than any previous experience I have had. I used to live in a VERY small town in Kansas. My students wanted to learn piano, but that was pretty much as far as they could go. There weren’t events or contests, and opportunities to take their learned skills to play along with others were few and far between.

In Houston, the opportunities for my piano students are endless. There are piano classes at school, community groups for musicians, and even opportunities to play within their churches. Some of my proudest moments are when my students walk into their Houston piano lessons and tell me about a time when they played one of their songs for a friend, or that their family was in town and they were able to show them what they had learned.

I highly recommend that up-and-coming musicians and music teachers to take on some students of their own. From this experience, I have been able to hone in on my own music skills along with my students, as well as expand my contacts with people in the music industry and school districts. It is a very rewarding and humbling experience when someone calls or emails me to ask for lessons, advice, or even a performance because of the work I have put in with another student. The hard work and dedication you put in to your Houston piano lessons will open doors to opportunities which would not be available to you without this experience.

I can help beginner players of any age learn the fundamentals of playing the piano including posture, hand positioning, note-reading, and basic theory. I prefer to use the Piano Pronto book series. Piano lessons are only offered at my own studio. I do not travel to students' homes.

About Allison
Welcome to my profile! I provide a warm and encouraging environment for students to make the mistakes necessary for learning an instrument and exploring their musical creativity. My passion for music has inspired me to pursue teaching and performance professionally in order to help others achieve their musical dreams.

My ultimate goal is for my students to gain all the skills necessary for creating meaningful musical experiences for themselves. Specifically I try to help them gain clean technique, a pleasing and expressive tone, basic understanding of music theory, and enough knowledge of music history to play with appropriate expression. I try to accomplish these goals by clearly explaining careful and deliberate practice techniques that remove the stress often associated with daily practice. Students will reap the benefits if they a
re committed to a regular practice schedule, are attentive during lessons, ask questions, and are honest with themselves about what is and is not working.

I began my teaching career in college while earning a Bachelor's in Music from Southwestern University (magna cum laude). I currently play as a soloist and with groups including AURORA: Trio for Flute, Harp, and Cello, the Shimmer Flute Choir, and Sounds of Silver Flute Quartet. I am also an active member of the Music Teacher's National Association and volunteer coordinator of the Houston Flute Club.

I love performing and I share my passion for music with my students.

*** Lesson Details ***

***I only teach lessons in my studio or online for certain subjects. I DO NOT TRAVEL TO STUDENTS' HOMES.***

Flute Lessons:

I offer lessons that cover just about every aspect of playing the Western concert flute. Students can expect to become well-rounded musicians who are knowledgeable about flute technique, tone, music theory and history. I use a combination of the Rubank Method and Flute 101 books with handout supplements.

The biggest changes I've seen in my students after a few months is a better understanding of how to practice efficiently as well as improved tone. Furthermore, every year many of my students earn superior ratings of 1 on their UIL solos.

Every Spring my students and I participate in Flute Fest, a day-long celebration of all things flute, including concerts, masterclasses, and a solo and ensemble contest. A few weeks later we have our annual studio recital where everyone shows off their hard work.

A NOTE ABOUT WOODEN FLUTES

Occasionally I am asked to help students play wooden, non-western flutes. Although the very basic fundamentals are the same, I do not play these flutes and do not teach them.

Piano Lessons:

Piano is not only fun to play for its own sake, but provides a foundation for all music making. Students will learn about proper posture and hand-positioning, note-reading, rhythm, and a little history as well, using the Piano Pronto book series.

Music Theory Lessons:

I can help students of any instrument better understand the fundamental concepts of music theory: scales, intervals, chords, part-writing, etc. Theory lessons take place at the piano to demonstrate concepts. However, students do not have to play piano to take theory lessons. I typically use a combination of the Master Theory curriculum and other handouts, unless the student is already working out of another textbook.

**Online theory lessons** use the same curriculum, but with the screen share feature to help my demonstrations.

Summer Curriculum:

During the summer I offer additional group classes on different subjects, including theory and ear-training. I try something new every year to provide a variety of opportunities for students to learn and grow in their musicianship.

***Tuition Packages***
I have added my own features to the two tuition options TL already offers. I consider the Recurring Schedule a Subscription Package, where clients pay the same amount every month, equal to the value of four lessons, regardless of the number of lessons attended. This guarantees a permanent reservation of your time slot. I call the Schedule-As-You-Go the A La Carte Package, for those who cannot commit to a regular time. There is no reservation of a time slot and you pay for a few lessons at a time. I am happy to answer questions about tuition through the Ask A Question feature!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is located in the front room of my home and includes a music stand, piano, and comfortable chairs in case parents would like to stay for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
I primarily concentrate on classical music, but I also have experience with extended techniques, which include singing and playing at the same time, key clicks, and multiphonics.

I don't accept schedule-as-you-go students.

Studio Policy:

Regular practice: Students are required to practice 5 days a week. The more you practice, the better prepared you are for the lesson. The length of each daily practice session depends on the age or level of the student. Minimum daily practice requirements by age are:

Ages 4 ~ 10/ beginners: 30 minutes
Ages 10 ~ 14/ intermediate: 45 minutes
Ages 14 ~ 18/ advanced: 60 minutes and more

Regular attendance to lessons: I want you to have correct music reading, playing, and good posture, and these cannot be achieved without regular guidance by the teacher. Regular attendance to lessons also insures that no change of schedule will be made to yours because of someone else’s lesson cancellation.

About Paul David
I have two degrees, as well as a teaching certificate in music education.

Music Education is incredibly important, and the field
I hold dearly to my heart. Music is my passion in life,
and it is why I wake up in the morning. Music can enrich
someone’s life, whether it is simply listening to a piece
of music, or studying an instrument for one’s lifetime.
Studies have shown that music education can and has
increased intellectual skills, especially in mathematics and
reading. When learners are motivated and very studious
in music education, many of these students become
doctors, engineers, teachers, and other highly-intellectual
professions.
In conclusion, an education and especially a music
education is so important for the emotional and intellectual
development of a human being.
Music is an excellent medium for collaborat
ion in which
students can grow and excel as individuals. Choir, band,
orchestra, and various chamber groups can spark a child’s
interest, as well as interact with other peers in a positive
environment.
A student can feel a great sense of accomplishment and
learning through the study of music. After weeks, if not
months of rehearsal and practice, the student will then
have the privilege of performing in public. The teacher’s
role in this factor is so crucial in that the teacher needs
to be very experienced in the field, and also has to have a
passion for what he or she does.
Studies have shown that the study of music greatly
enhances brain power. Test scores are greatly increased,
especially in the areas of math and reading. Studies have
also shown that students who study music are motivated
to achieve in life. Many music students go on to become
professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and teachers.
Some music students even become leaders of nations,
such as our past president Bill Clinton.

Whether the lesson is 30 min. up to an hour, the format is the same: The student first reviews the piece(s) of music and materials from the lesson last week. I'm always emphasizing retention and recall. Next we start on new information and new piece(s) of music. For the remainder of the lesson we do theory and written work, then conclude with older pieces (usually the student's choice).

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in dinning area with acoustic piano, waiting area for parents in living room

*** Specialties ***
I like to teach out of many method books, such as Faber and Alfred's. All materials are welcome however.

A beginner piano student will have the opportunity to learn the basics of reading sheet music. First, however, we will focus on playing simple one handed songs and focusing on becoming comfortable with the keys and building muscle memory. Afterwards we would move onto learning major and minor chords, major and minor scales, pentatonic scales, and then finally practice more difficult songs by reading sheet music while playing treble and bass clef together. This will provide the learner with opportunities to play songs that they enjoy and learn ways to find that music on their own in order to keep learning once they have mastered everything I have to teach. For many, myself included, once the basics are learned it is very simple to continue on by teaching one's self songs with the sheet music, or even by ear.

About Michael
Hello everybody, my name is Michael and I have been playing both the guitar and piano since I was four years old (20 years). Over the past few years my emphasis has been guitar playing but I make a point to keep up my piano skills as well. I currently do work teaching children with autism, and I have started teaching several of them to play the piano during the work day, and perform children's songs for them on the guitar during music time frequently. My main musical interests include americana and country music, but I have spent time learning several other types of music as well. I am looking to teach beginner to intermediate students and help them learn/perfect the basics of guitar and piano.

With a Bachelor's in Music Education and 3 years of Piano study, I am able to customize each lesson to the student's individual needs. In piano we will learn: how to read and write music, how to play songs, and music theory

About Jonathan
Jonathan received his training at Houston Baptist University in 2016 where he received a degree in Music Education. Jonathan has taught lessons through public school districts, Guitar Center Lessons (where he served as instructor and later as Department Manager) and as an independent private teacher.

Jonathan is also a professional musician, performing shows around the city every week.
Thanks to his expert training, Jonathan is able to customize and adjust every lesson to suit each student's individual needs and learning traits in order to optimize enjoyment and success.

In lessons, all facets of music can be addressed, including music theory, tempo and rhythm, improvisation and soloing, grooves, ear training and any other techniques needing to be developed.

Study into specific genres is also an option, including jazz, funk, s
oul, R&B, reggae, latin, rock, pop, metal, etc.

Another major focus in lessons is helping each student develop their own "voice" in their playing. This is the most rewarding part of being a musician, as learning how to develop your playing to channel your own mental, physical and emotional feelings and ideas leads to great self discovery, self confidence and awareness. It is also a great stress reliever and can be very therapeutic!

Lessons with Jonathan are highly engaging and educational, but they are also fun! Jonathan creates a lesson plan unique to each student's needs and skills to ensure maximum results and progression inside of a comfortable and fun atmosphere! All the educational material means nothing if you aren't finding the enjoyment and fun in the lesson to actually practice and learn the material outside of it! Jonathan approaches lessons with a professional and laid-back demeanor looking to keep a smile and interest on the student's face from the beginning of the lesson to the end!

Develop your love of music while learning basic keyboard skills. My easy going style of teaching will keep you motivated and encourage you to enjoy the process of learning.

As a voice instructor with over 20 years experience in the private studio, college environment, church ministry, high school chorus master teacher, and as a free-lance performer, I understand that each student requires tools and techniques unique to their needs to grow and improve. About Holly
As a professional performer, teacher and master teacher with a Master's degree from Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor's degree from California State University, Chico, I have performed with orchestras, chambers groups and choirs throughout the United States and Europe.
Comfortable in both classical and musical theater genres, my knowledge of vocal production and the musical skills needed to succeed in music make me an excellent teacher. I pride myself in having a great ear and instinctual understanding of each student's individual instructional needs.

Before relocating to Houston, I owned and operated a successful full-time private teaching studio in the Atlanta area with voice students succeeding in All-State Chorus, the Governor's Honors Program, college auditions, local competitions, community thea
ter, and school chorus auditions. As a successful soloist and vocal instructor, I pride myself in teaching proper technique, nurturing each student's vocal development, helping singers develop a true love of music, and gaining an appreciation of their unique vocal gifts. Many of my vocalists learn the skills of reading music by learning keyboard and basic theory through piano lessons, which I am also able to teach.

With a creative and personable teaching style, I am able to connect with each student where they need to be met. My students of all ages see an immediate improvement when applying the techniques that I share with them. Focusing on healthy vocal production, good breath support, and proper techniques of support and vowel placement, I am able to help students reach their musical goals through vocal exercises and drills, direct application to selected music, and assigned home practice between lessons. After learning the basics of vocal production, we can further focus on interpretive elements of the songs and students will feel the rewards of making beautiful music with their own free and unique sound.

Good day!
After having taught piano for a few years now, my students have been successful learning the fundamentals of piano playing. The most popular beginner piano books do not actually start as easy as they possibly can. I have a list of songs that the student will start off with that are easier than the typical first songs on a book. After these songs have been learned, the student will play from the Alfred piano books. Eventually, the student will be able to play more advanced songs and pieces like Fur Elise. The parents provide the student with music books and a metronome.
If I seem like a good fit, don't hesitate to press the green button!

About Edward
You may think it’s strange to talk about a story that is unrelated to music, but read on to find out why this story is important to Alex’s life as a music teacher. Alex has always been a curious guy. Having worn glasses for his entire life, Alex was interested to see what contacts were like. Usually, he would have just accepted what he was told. However, this time, he was determined to wear contacts. So, Alex attended a different eye doctor rather than his original doctor. Even then, he was told that he would not be able to wear contacts. But he was still determined to try them out. Surprisingly, the contacts worked! Little did Alex know that this would be the start of a different chapter in his life.

It was perhaps not surprising, then, that a new emphasis on education had begun to develop. Shortly afterwards, Alex accepted a new job
as a piano teacher at the Piano Studio. Using the lessons he had learned from his visit to the doctor, he started to form his philosophy on teaching. No matter what the challenges of the student, Alex will always strive to work through those challenges and do his best to successfully teach that student.

There have been a few piano beginners that have come by the Piano Studio that were assigned to Alex’s teaching roster. When they started, they were clearly some of the hardest beginners he has had to work with. One parent even remarked that her child would be impossible to teach. That parent was fortunately wrong! For months, now, this student follows Alex's instructions very clearly and has been paying attention every lesson. This is an example of how Alex's tenacity has paid off.

With a full studio of nearly twenty students per week while attending San Jacinto College, Alex stuck by with this principle of never giving up. Even when it seemed discouraging, he never gave up on any of his students as long as his students never give up on themselves. This, he believes, is what separates teachers who are passionate at their work, and teachers who just try to get by.

Currently, Alex teaches at a piano studio in Webster, TX, while attending the University of St. Thomas. Additionally, he performs weekly at a local Church as the staff organist and pianist.

Edward's a very patient teacher and accomplished pianist. I've played the piano a bit on my own, but he gave me a detailed orientation into the theoretical side and technical side of piano. He gives me a large plate of work every week, and expects me to do this work. My progress isn't immediate, but it's going smoothly and it IS progress. I would suggest Edward for both begginers berly learning and for experienced players trying to learn more. Don't be shy with him. He can be a bit qwerky, but there is a method to his madness.

He is also a very accomplished Piano, Trumpet & improviser, a very sensitive player and a very musical individual.

I haven’t taken lessons from Edward, but we have played together since high school band. I’ve seen him play in concerts as a soloist and he is very musical on both piano and trumpet. We also played a trumpet solo with piano accompaniment that he wrote and it was a list of fun. He’s a great guy to work with and is very understanding of any problems you’re having as a musician. I’d definitely recommend Edward as a lesson teacher for both trumpet and piano.
