Students can expect a teacher that addresses every single aspect of learning orchestral upright bass: from honing bow technique, to left-hand formation and fingering choices, to reading musical notation, interpreting music and learning rhythm.

My goal is to help students develop a technical foundation on the bass for playing just about any kind of music that they are interested in, and to support students with practicing tips for areas in their playing where they want to improve. My specialty is symphony orchestra training, so I primarily use both the Essential Elements for Strings books and Suzuki Bass School series at the beginning, and then later as students make progress, I begin to introduce standard orchestral repertoire, sonatas, and concertos written for the bass. I have been teaching since August 2016 and so far I have helped students get into All-States, ensembles at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Division and Berklee College of Music, Districts/Regional ...

My daughter worked with a few instructors over the years, but not until she started working with Darren did she truly grow as a bassist and a musician. Darren is a very dedicated and knowledgeable teacher who cares greatly about his students. My daughter always finds him to be kind, patient and motivating. She has been able to move up youth orchestra levels each year while working with Darren. He fully understands the audition process and is able to successfully guide his students. I highly recommend Darren as an instructor for any level!

Darren is a very good teacher. Would recommend him to any bassist beginner or advanced.

My 11 year old has attended an after school music program in our district for a few years playing the double bass. When Covid hit, she was no longer able to continue learning, but her music teacher recommended her to audition for a selective music program at Berklee College of Music. That's when I reached out to Darren via his website to see if he could work with my child for the 8 week period to prepare for the online audition submission.

Darren worked with her every week on a completely new song, introduced great techniques that enabled her to learn quickly and develop new skills. Those 8 weeks were very productive as my she learned the entire song, did the audition and was accepted into the Berklee music program. Darren is a very knowledgeable and dedicated music instructor and I am grateful to him for helping my daughter get into a selective music program. The online lessons from Darren are exceptional. You will not be disappointed with his instructions.

I studied upright bass at two Midwest Universities, Northern Kentucky University and University of Cincinnati CCM. I have been playing the bass professionally in ensembles for years. I have experience playing jazz, blues, bluegrass, rock, folk, musical theatre and classical music.

My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:

1. theory -- if you know your theory, you know the best way to express your idea without having to think about it
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally

When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it

About David

Very grateful to have found David on this site and add to the chorus of great reviews. I have entered the world of music through the bass guitar with David's instruction and am already hooked. Bass is a fascinating (and challenging) instrument so I appreciate working with a professional who caters to beginners. I am looking forward to exploring more about music with each lesson and gaining more confidence playing this instrument. Thanks David!

David has been immensely helpful in getting me on my way to understanding timing and getting me through some of my mental blocks. In 2 months with David, I feel like I understand more about music than I ever have. His explanations are clear and that makes all the difference in the world for me. He has an abundance of patience, knowledge, and a passion for music. I'm nowhere near where I want to be, but I'm closer than I've ever been...All thanks to David.

Private Upright Bass Lessons Near You

The upright bass, double bass, or just bass is the lowest-pitched and largest of the string instruments. It's most commonly played with a bow or by plucking its strings, but with advanced, extended techniques. These produce a range of tones in a rich, sultry timbre.

Musicians who play bass are seen as the coolest of the cool cats and heppest of the hep. Bassists are standard members of almost any group of musicians, playing a variety of music. If you decide to learn to play upright bass, you'll find plenty of opportunities to perform.

Why Learn to Play Upright Bass?

Thanks to its versatility and wide range of use in music, the upright bass is a wonderful choice of string instrument to learn! After you've studied the basics of playing bass, you can focus on playi

Playing the upright bass also comes with loads of physical and mental benefits. These include masterful hand-eye coordination, improved memory, ability to learn, and listening abilities. Playing upright bass also strengthens the core muscles and improves a person's posture, which imparts a variety of holistic health benefits, such as lower blood pressure, increased circulation, and improved immune system.

The Best Way to Learn Upright Bass and What You'll Study in Upright Bass Classes

Sure, anyone can find free upright bass classes online, but the best way to learn upright bass is with a private teacher. In private upright bass lessons, you'll stay interested and motivated with the help of your teacher's undivided attention. You'll also overcome challenges quickly and avoid developing potentially detrimental bad habits, as you receive immediate feedback on your progress.

Plus, private lessons can be completely customized to meet the student's needs, preferred learning style, and interests. As a result, no two private lessons are exactly alike. For example, upright bass classes for children differ greatly in terms of teaching methods and course content from upright bass lessons for adults. In private upright bass lessons, you'll study the music you love most, while learning at a pace that's comfortable for you.

Sample Curriculum for Beginner Upright Bass Lessons

If you have little or no previous experience playing the upright bass, then beginner lessons are right for you. Your teacher will introduce you to the basic techniques and knowledge needed to play simple tunes on your instrument. You'll develop a strong foundation of skills that will allow you to advance to more challenging repertoire. In beginner lessons, your upright bass tutor might cover the following topics:

  • Instrument anatomy and care
  • Proper posture, instrument, and bow hold
  • Thumb position and finger positions
  • Practicing scales and basic melodies
  • Learn to read musical notation
  • Introduction to music theory

Sample Curriculum for Intermediate Upright Bass Classes

Intermediate lessons are perfect for students who already know the basics of music theory, reading musical notation, and playing the upright bass. In these classes, you'll be introduced to more technically difficult techniques and rhythms, while you learn to play increasingly complex music. In intermediate lessons, your instructor might cover the following topics:

  • Bowing techniques and directions
  • Pizzicato (striking) technique
  • Slap bass
  • Harmonics
  • Exercises and arpeggios

Sample Curriculum for Advanced Upright Bass Lessons

Students who have nearly mastered the upright bass, who wish to improve and polish their skills in private classes with an expert, should sign up for advanced lessons. You'll work with your instructor to overcome individual challenges and achieve your goals. Course content included in advanced upright bass classes depends greatly on the student's individual interests and goals, but your teacher might choose to cover the following topics:

  • Intensive, genre-based study
  • Sight reading
  • Soloing and improvisation
  • Audition coaching
  • Performance preparation
  • Gigging tips and advice
