Piano Lessons in Chicago - My Kind of Town

By Daniel K. - Chicago Piano Teacher

Warmest greetings to you from Chicago where the weather can be very cold, but the music scene will always be hot! My name is Daniel K., and I have been a music performer and instructor in this great city for over three decades, teaching Chicago piano lessons as well as playing many live and studio sessions with voice, guitar, trumpet, sax, bass, drums, and piano. My favorite pursuit is rock music, but all styles of music are readily heard throughout the area, and I am happy to sit in on a jazz ensemble, Latin group, blues band, or accompany a classic music performer.

My residence is located near Wrigley Field which is surrounded by more venues than one can count, such as The Cubby Bear, Martyr’s, Schuba’s, The Metro, The Vic Theatre, The Piano Man Lounge, and so many more clubs that it would be hard to visit them all in a lifetime. Nearby on Clark Street there are two famous reggae clubs, the Wild Hare and Exodus, which are adjacent to Sluggers, a club featuring Dueling Pianos every Friday night. There are several of these venues that promote this approach to piano performance that have become popular. Sometimes an unknown player displays their talents across from a famous artist, and it can be very inspiring to hear. Opportunity is almost infinite. Billy Joel and Elton John split the bill and performed two really awesome outdoor concerts at Wrigley Field recently. It was a wonderful musical experience beyond words to hear the piano resounding from the friendly confines of the ball park throughout Lakeview. I could hear it from my front porch!

Dave Matthews was also at the ball park a few months ago, and many other famous musicians performed at the summer street festivals which seem to occur all over Chicago. The Spin Doctors played on Lincoln Avenue only steps from my door! I fell in love with the Psychedelic Furs all over again when they played the House of Blues, which they seem to do almost every year. They also did a great show at Lincoln Park Zoo, and even the animals seemed to appreciate that. I really enjoy the delightful ostinato keyboard melodies that make the Furs’ music so hypnotic.

One can never tell if they will run into The Rolling Stones in some blues club, as they come here to get new ideas from the incredible blues artists Chicago is known for. I once ran into Robert Plant who was enjoying a free concert in Grant Park. I had the opportunity to catch Passion Pit at the Petrillo Shell last summer, and was amazed at the high energy keyboard sounds they implement into their music. There are also many behind the scenes music opportunities for up and coming artists in the theatre field, such as Brier Street Theatre where Blue Man Group performs regularly, or as a pit performer in shows such as Wicked.

Sometimes I enjoy just being a listener, as the quality of music here is unsurpassed anywhere. Perhaps it is the tried and true music of yesteryear, or the newest cutting edge development of fresh talent, but one may seek out their musical desires, and possibly discover something they would have never realized without exposure to the vibrant, robust music scene in Chicago. Several years ago my interest in salsa and cha cha dancing brought me to fabulous places like Café LaGuardia or The Rumba where I could dance all night while listening to the delightful passages of the Latin rhythms played on heavenly grand pianos by accomplished players.

There are endless performance opportunities on any given night in the clubs that feature open mic nights. I use these venues to showcase the talents and accomplishments of my Chicago piano students. It begins as a dreamy idea for a new student, but is soon realized with dramatically inspiring results. There are even opportunities for the younger students at shows for all ages at places like the Hideout, which can host world famous artists on one day and teenage girl bands on the next day.

It is quite rewarding for me to work with the Chicago piano students I have been fortunate enough to teach. I am happy to share my extensive experience with all of them, and take great pleasure in the accomplishments I witness, such as a seven year old girl that can play music that she reads or an eight year old boy that writes his own love songs with his electric guitar and voice. These two students may have a hit song before they finish high school! Even the radio stations are the best in the world here. My favorite station, WXRT, features local performances of new, unsigned artists every Thursday night. I have seen this entire country on tours and travel and as I wrote in one of my songs, “Chicago…is every place I’ve ever been.”

Those with no previous experience through basic knowledge, and some previous training.

About Kacey
With my Bachelor's from San Diego State University, I came to Chicago to pursue my Master's at The Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. I have over 10 years of performing experience, including soloist with the San Diego City Ballet's Orchestra, and singing in the San Diego Opera Chorus. I also have over 6 years of teaching experience in both singing and beginning piano. I have also worked in the educational world with children ages 4-17, and believe music can be learned at any age.

Lessons are fun and creative, and will include activities to help understand concepts or games to get warmed up. You leave each lesson with a practice log for the week, and clear expectations of what you should be practicing.

So if you want to learn to be a musician and you want to enjoy the learning process, I'm the girl for you!

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons begin with a variety of warm ups to gently awaken the muscles of the vocal tract, and apply healthy vocal technique. This all comes together when we work on a variety of repertoire.

Piano lessons include technique, learning to understand the keyboard and how to read music and apply that to playing the piano, and of course all tied into playing repertoire.

All lessons will discuss basic music theory and reading music, as well as a working knowledge of the piano as to assist in at home practice.

*** Studio Equipment ***
At my apartment I have an 88 key weighted digital piano that I use for both lessons. We will discuss the need to purchase music books, which is a case by case basis.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I do not have a traveling keyboard, but bring music sheets and lesson logs with me.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching beginning piano, and beginning and intermediate voice. My piano training is rooted in the Suzuki method, and my voice training is classical.

About Kelvin
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str

The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Piano lessons will begin with basics on how to read music and will move toward establishing healthy practice techniques and building a strong repertoire of pieces from various genres and time periods.

About Jennifer
Hi! My name is Jennifer and I LOVE music!! I've been teaching piano lessons for about 10 years and voice lessons for about 5 years. I really love getting to share my passion for music with others and helping students to develop their own musical skills.

I graduated from Trinity Christian College in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in Music. In 2015, I completed my Master's degree in Musicology at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Since then, I have worked for a theatre company in San Francisco and as an accompanist for both high school and middle school choirs in Ceres, CA. I recently moved back to Chicago and would love to start teaching lessons again!!

*** Lesson Details ***
For piano lessons, I will typically use the Piano Adventure series by Faber and Faber. I am also open to working on other pieces a student brin
gs me. I do expect students to reimburse me for the cost of the books they keep.

Voice lessons begin with the fundamentals of breathing and proper tone. I will typically select one or two pieces at a time for students to work on that tie in to what they are learning. I also encourage students to bring in suggestions of songs they would like to learn.

** Students MUST have either a piano or keyboard both for lessons and that they can practice on.

I have been playing piano for over 20 years, and I know how to make it fun for a beginning pianist. I teach a mix of book learning and creativity, encouraging students to make up their own songs, right from the first lesson. I find many people who studied piano as a child, quit later in their teens (and regret quitting later in adulthood). I believe the problem is a lack of creative connection to the instrument. I aim to change that in my approach with beginners. If this sounds interesting for you or your child, please contact me!

About Michael
Hi there!

I am a guitar, bass and piano player with over 20 years of experience to offer my students. I graduated from Duquesne University, (Pittsburgh, PA) in 1992 with a Bach. of music performance, jazz emphasis. I have toured, recorded and given lessons all over the world. Check out my photos and videos for some examples of what I do. (all students are posted with permission and parental permission)

My passion as a teacher is simply to help you learn to play and enjoy music. I tailor my lessons to suit your specific needs. Whether you are a parent who wants their child to learn a solid musical foundation or a busy adult who just wants to sit and learn some songs, I have a method that keeps your interest while developing your skills.

I like to spend at least half of the lesson playing together. I find the interactive approach
to be the most fun and the most effective. I will use whatever style you like. If it is a good song, we can learn something by playing it!

I teach guitar, bass guitar and upright bass, beginner through intermediate, as well as beginning piano. Several of my students have gone on to professional careers. I even had a former student compete on the Voice last year, which was a lot of fun to watch!

My studio is located in Skokie, just north of the Chicago border. For more information or to schedule a lesson, please contact Take Lessons. Your success is my goal!

As a full-time working adult, I really appreciate Mike's easygoing personality and flexibility. Having lessons every other week in my apartment is about the only way I can manage it, and he doesn't give me a hard time if I don't get a lot of time to practice. He strikes the right balance of telling me what he thinks I need to know while also letting me choose the course for our lessons at times. If you have performance anxiety like I do, Mike will put you at ease. He got me to sing on our very first lesson, and I thought I would die. But he has really encouraged me, and now I feel much more comfortable playing and singing in lessons. I've been a longtime beginner at guitar, and after almost a year of playing with Mike, I can definitely see that I've progressed. I definitely recommend classes with him!

She was always on time, personable, friendly, and enthusiastic, and did a great job tailoring her instructions to me based on what I already knew, both about playing the piano and in terms of general musical knowledge. Now I play keys in a band, and it's all thanks to Michelle helping me get started again!

Music literacy, technique, theory, repertoire, style, and creative expression. Music is a source of fun and community, and I do my best to impart that on each student.
Audition prep!
Beginner-friendly!

I grew up in a teaching family. My mother, sister, and uncle are teachers, and every day for years I heard stories of how they met the needs and challenges of thousands of students. My strengths are treating students as individuals, nurturing creativity, patience, inspiring passion & motivation, and focusing on the fundamentals of music making.

About Isaiah
Isaiah grew up in a family of teachers and musicians. After beginning to teach himself piano, his mother quickly enrolled him in private lessons at the age of 5. Following his two older siblings, he joined the school band on saxophone in the 4th grade.

Over the past decade, Isaiah Sanderman. has played in countless classical, jazz, and modern ensembles on multiple saxophones. In high school, he performed in musicals, led the saxophone section in marching band, and was the top saxophonist in the classical and jazz ensembles. He was also the student-director of the school's freshman band, a role in which he learned a great deal about the art and science of teaching. Graduating with recognition as an Honors All-State musician, along with the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award and John Phillip Sousa Band Award, his path as a professional was set.

Presently enrolled at Roosevelt University's Chicago College of Performing Arts, Mr. Sanderman studies and performes music of the highest caliber. Playing flute and saxophone in the school's Large Jazz Ensemble and Brazilian Combo, he has been the youngest and most-featured soloist under the direction of world-class pianist Marshall Vente and world-class guitarist Paulinho Garcia.

Outside of academia, Mr. Sanderman has had the privilege of performing with Zoofunkyou and leading the pop/funk horn section in Minor 9ths to sold out shows at House of Blues and other local venues.

Mr. Sanderman also explores his interest of the art of practice on his website, CollegePracticing.com, where he has interviewed numerous college students on their practice habits, as well as working professionals with degrees from such esteemed institutions as Berklee College of Music, Indiana University, and Northwestern University.

Whether its a few chords or an intricate accompaniment, piano is an important part of any band or ensemble. I can teach you different techniques and styles to compliment any song.

About Claire
My name is Claire and I have been making a living as a touring/gigging musician for the last eight years. I studied music performance and production at Columbia College Chicago. I have played in a variety of styles, both solo and as part of a band. I currently tour with my band, The Lucky Dutch on keys and vocals. My students start their journey learning music of their choice, sparking interest and enthusiasm from the very first lesson. My motto is "Relentless Positivity" and it shows in my lessons. There is never a consequence for a wrong answer or misplaced note and the worst thing that can happen is we play it again. We will work together to navigate this inspiring and often humbling path.

I have been teaching for 10 years - in Sao Paulo/Brazil and in the USA. I can help you to find your passion in music through piano!

About Alessandra
Alessandra Odazaki, born in São Paulo, Brazil, is an active performer and piano teacher. She first began taking piano lessons at age 5 while living in Japan and continued to take lessons after moving to Brazil at age 9. She first received a diploma from São Paulo Municipal Theater Conservatory of Music where she studied with Scheilla Glaser for 11 years. She also holds a BM in Piano Performance from São Paulo State University where studied piano with Dr. Claudio Richerme.

Her interest in teaching piano began when she was sixteen years old. Since then, Miss Odazaki has had experience with students ages 6 to 80 years old. Several of her students have won awards and have been admitted into the top Brazilian conservatory (São Paulo State Music School and São Paulo Municipal Theater Conservatory of Music). Her most recent accomplishment has b
een coaching a handful of American students to winning the Illinois Grade School Music Association State & Solo Ensemble Contest. All students are held to high standards and given unique attention and curricula.

From 2009 to 2015, Miss Odazaki worked for the social project: "Projeto Guri Santa Marcelina" where she has taught theory classes and served as a vocal staff accompanist. This is a social project that aims to improve the lives of impoverished Brazilian children through music education. She was also a staff member of Yamaha Music School (the first school of its kind in Brazil), where she organized and instructed piano lessons and Junior Music Courses. Here she received training from official Yamaha instructors from Japan.

Miss Odazaki has been an active participant in master-classes with several renowned pianists such as Olga Kiun (Russia-Brazil), Ronan O'Hara (England), Piotr Banasik (Poland), Caio Pagano (Brazil-USA), Flavio Varani (Brazil-USA), Maciej Pikulski (Poland), Frank Braley (France) and Marcos Fregnani (Brazil-Germany).

She believes that a good teacher is also a good performer who never stops seeking and practicing. Because of that, she decided to move to the United States to pursue her MM in Piano Performance at Southern Illinois University and studied with Dr. Junghwa Lee.

During her first semester she was the winner of the concerto competition “Stars of Altgeld”. This gave her the opportunity to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto N. 20 in D minor, K. 466. as a soloist with the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra.
