The mountain dulcimer is a great instrument to play. One can learn many songs remarkably fast. I usually start with standard folk songs and basic strum patterns. Then the melody can be added later.

Dulcimer:
The Appalachian dulcimer is a fretted string instrument of the zither family, typically with three or four strings. Its origins are in the Appalachian region of the United States. The body extends the length of the fingerboard, and its fretting is generally diatonic.
It is a beautiful droning instrument to learn and great for accompanying yourself or others. I always start with the basics of hand and finger technique, notes, chords, and songs. As the student progresses, if interested, I will teach theory and soloing.

Karen is an incredibly skillful teacher. She is very passionate about music and it easy to be comfortable with her. She shares her training and knowledge very clearly. The vocal exercises seem very unique and holistic for body and voice health. She is very encouraging, caring, and soul-uplifting. I feel like I have a new connection with my voice and all that is connected to using it... as an instrument and the journey is only just starting. 45 minutes went by so fast. I am looking forward to my next lessons.

I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!

Lynn gets down to basics from the get-go. Starting with tuning and the correct way to hold the banjo, she progresses to proper finger positions and chord structure from fret to fret. By the way, she's also very personable, and seems to enjoy a laugh from time to time.

"I've only just had my first lesson with James (aka Jimmy), and it is evident he has a very deep knowledge and experience. The manner with which James imparts his obvious talent and/or complex music theory to a novice like me is expressed in perfectly understandable terms. I hope to continue anon with James as I am able."

"Karen is so friendly, sweet, and methodical in teaching style. It is wonderful to be introduced to dulcimer with her and - literally - learn how to fine tune my instrument with her tips and encouragement. She makes me even more excited to tune and play my instrument. I can easily get happily lost simply in the tuning process with my dulcimer as it brings me a lot of joy just to hear the notes come into tune and playing very small, minor amounts of things on my dulcimer as is... it is so nice to have a guide like Karen to help me better to understand and dance with my dulcimer, learn about music and how the dulcimer strings are arranged, and how to hold the hammers! I thought I was excited to learn before... I'm even more happy and excited now and have some clear, down to earth steps to begin to actually really play with my instrument!"

Private Dulcimer Lessons Near You

The dulcimer is one of many string instruments. There are a variety of dulcimers including fretted dulcimers, hammered dulcimers, bowed dulcimers, and electric dulcimers. The various dulcimers feature a variety of shapes (long and skinny, teardrop-like, and trapezoidal) and sizes, and produce a range of tones.

When struck, the strings of hammered dulcimers, for example, resonate with an enchanting sound that might remind you medieval songs or castle courtyards. The strings of a fretted Appalachian dulcimer, on the other hand, are plucked or strummed and produce a tone that fits in perfectly with a bluegrass band.

Why Learn to Play Dulcimer?

The dulcimer is a relatively simple string instrument to learn. Depending on the type of dulcimer you play, they typically only have three or four strings that need to be tuned, and these strings are usually tuned to an open chord, which produced a pleasing harmony when strummed. In addition, dulcimers feature frets, so there's no need to memorize an exact finger placement, as you must when learning to play stringed instruments like the violin, viola, or cello.

Learning to play dulcimer will also allow you to learn music from a wide variety of genres. Common music for the dulcimer includes classical tunes, bluegrass, folk music, Irish music, Middle Eastern music, Greek music, Turkish music, and more. Although different types of dulcimers tend to fit better with certain genres, you'll still be able to play a range of music regardless of the type of dulcimer you use.

The Best Way to Learn to Play Dulcimer and What You'll Practice in Lessons

Sure, you can find lots of free dulcimer classes and tutorials online, but the best way to learn how to play this instrument is by practicing with a private dulcimer teacher. In private lessons, you'll receive your teacher's undivided attention and the sort of personalized instruction that simply can't be found in larger classes or in online videos. With immediate feedback, you'll overcome personal challenges and improve quickly, while focusing on the type of dulcimer music you enjoy the most.

Plus, every private lesson is different. Teachers completely customize every class, keeping in mind the student's interests, goals, existing knowledge, and preferred learning styles. For example, dulcimer classes for adults differ in terms of content and teaching methods from dulcimer lessons for children. No matter your age or current skill level, your private dulcimer tutor will keep you motivated and interested, while you learn at a pace that's comfortable for you.

Sample Curriculum for Beginner Dulcimer

If you have little or no previous experience playing the dulcimer, then beginner lessons are for you. In these classes, your teacher will introduce you to all the music fundamentals and basic playing techniques you need to get started. You'll start out learning your way around the instrument and then move onto playing some basic tunes. Your teacher might cover the following topics:

  • Dulcimer anatomy, frets, tuning, and how to hold your instrument
  • Learn to play basic chords, strumming, and picking
  • Read dulcimer guitar tablature
  • Introduction to music theory

Sample Curriculum for Intermediate Dulcimer

If you're familiar with the basics, but want to learn more challenging techniques, you'll be able to take your dulcimer skills to the next level in intermediate lessons. Your teacher will introduce you to new techniques, while helping you strengthen your existing skills, as you challenge yourself to play more complex music. Your teacher might choose to cover the following topics:

  • Learn how to play with different tunings
  • Introduction to ornamentation (slides, pull-offs, and hammer-ons)
  • Thumping and double thumbing
  • Play a broad range of music or focus on a specific genre

Sample Curriculum for Advanced Dulcimer

Advanced lessons are intended for accomplished dulcimer players. In these courses, you'll have the opportunity to work with a professional to improve and polish your skills and techniques. Subjects included in advanced courses depend on the student's goals and interests, but your teacher might choose to cover the following topics:

  • Improvisation
  • Soloing techniques
  • Advanced picking techniques
  • Audition coaching and performance preparation
