My work with you on Audition Prep, depending on your level of experience and the audition situation, can be broad or intensive, and can include any or all of the following: Pre-audition Preparation - How to prepare to make an impact; getting the best from your headshots and resume; choosing your audition piece (if applicable); specifying what you want to achieve; how to rehearse your audition; cultivating the proper attitude; handling nervousness and stage fright; developing consistency; familiarizing yourself with the director and/or casting director; how to use info about the producing company and their products; the importance of what you do the night before the audition. Presentation - Arriving at the audition; how to conduct yourself; entering and exiting an audition space; reading the room; how to relate to the auditioners; what to say and not to say; what to wear; what to bring; your interaction with other auditionees. Post audition - Critical analysis; self-assessment; objectivity vs. subjectivity; digesting the experience as a whole, and any feedback; making corrections; emotional distancing; anticipating and preparing for callbacks; moving on. Effective use and synthesis of the 4 actor tools - Voice, Body, Face, and Mind. Script Analysis - Keywords; meaning; beats; character intent; meter; pronunciation; emphasis; author intent; exploring the entire work that includes your script. Character - How to analyze your character; identifying objectives; playing objectives; the only three things we know about a character; choosing a style; choosing a voice; the suitability of choosing costume pieces and props; how your character moves overall; how your character walks; what emotions does your character exhibit; how to use animal characters; working from outside in vs from inside out. Face Acting - Understanding your face; constructive use of the degrees and elements of the 7 universal emotional facial expressions; what your neutral face says to others; different applications for auditions for live gigs, on camera gigs, mic-only gigs, comedy, drama, multi-character auditions, and monologues. Gesture - The wide variety of uses of your fingers, hands, arms, torso, head; identifying opportunities for gesture; creating a gesture; choreographing a gesture; the timing of gesture; co-ordination of gesture and dialogue; use and avoidance of gesture repetition; applying artistic discretion to gesture. Voice - Pitch; loudness; speed; rhythm; tone; prosody; variables and variations; character elements; use of dramatic and comedic pauses; emotion; enunciation; emphasis; pace; intervals; nasal continuents; u-glide; musicality; and more. The Art of Telling the Story - The specific aspects of "tell the story," which any performance or audition should do. The Art of Physicalization - How to physicalize your audition, take it beyond the multifarious elements of physicality, and make it come to life. The Art of Realization - Shepherding your audition from the ideal to the practical, from the alpha to the omega. And much more! Every Audition Prep session of mine is tailored-made for each participant, so I'll know much better how to proceed specifically for you once I know a bit about you and we have had the opportunity to meet and work together. I look forward to hearing from you, and helping you!

Kindness and understanding are the foundations of a successful student-teacher relationship. I believe in building students up so they can see how innately gifted they truly are; there is no such thing as a person who “can't sing.” I teach students of all ages and with all kinds of musical backgrounds. My studio is a place for patient, supportive growth: you should expect to work hard and have fun at the same time. If you choose to take voice lessons with me, we will spend your first lesson exploring your skill level as a singer, determining your musical interests, and reviewing or learning the basics of vocal technique. My goal is to help you grow as a musician by giving you the tools you need to sing music from any genre with confidence. As we continue our work together, you will develop or refine excellent breath control, consistent, beautiful sound production throughout registers, and an understanding of what healthy vocal technique is and why it matters. We will also spend lesson time practicing ear-training, sight-reading and music theory as they apply to the songs we are working on together. In addition to regular voice lessons, I offer coaching for singers who have upcoming competitions, auditions or other performances. Vocalists who work with me as they prepare for these events often go on to land their preferred roles and win their competitions. Whether you need guidance in repertoire selection, diction, or help with a few tricky passages, I am available to assist you as you prepare for your singing event. *2022 Update*: In order to give students/performers the best chance of success, I require a minimum of three booked sessions over a period of at least three weeks before the audition or competition is set to take place. My open-communication policy as an educator enables me to answer questions and provide additional resources, including customized warm-ups, outside of regular lesson time. I also maintain flexible scheduling for all of my students: studying singing is a fun challenge, but lessons should never be a source of stress. I am always happy to work with you to accommodate your schedule. Background: I am a classically-trained lyric soprano with over seventeen years of vocal education. I studied with PhD and MA professors of voice at universities in Kansas and Washington State. I also have many years of experience as a performer at a variety of venues across the country: my background includes solo concert work, lead and supporting roles in opera and theater productions, and event performances and competitions. I taught voice and beginning piano lessons, often on a volunteer basis, to students part-time from 2006 to 2012. I now teach voice lessons and provide coaching full-time. Students can study with me online or in-person at my studio.

I actually started out my coaching career in 1997 by helping fellow students in my graduate program in musical theatre prepare for auditions. I love helping singers prep in all the various ways they need to so that they can confidently go into an audition and showcase that not only do they have talent, they have knowledge and skill and are someone the casting, music and director directors will want to work with in their show. I have been coaching singers for musical theatre auditions, singing competitions and band auditions for 25+ years. I'd love to help you too! Sessions can cover the following: -Vocals: vocal power, pitch accuracy, breath support, phrasing choices, tone and color -Acting: making acting choices that support the characters movement, emotional connection, stage presence, command of the stage as well as the vocal necessities of the role/song -Presentation: clothing choices that help people remember you and that are flattering to your physique, a strong introduction to show them you are professional and are someone with whom they'd like to work -Audition Song Selection: choosing a piece that will showcase you at your best and which helps the director see you as the character you most want to play *I give you all the tools you need to go in and confidently crush your auditions, because you'll walk in as a well-rounded, well-rehearsed and well-thought out performer who knows what they are doing and is ready to help bring the project to life.
