Classical music-focused, fun and relaxed environment, experienced teacher with top conservatory background

About Jessica
Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. She loves the area, and she and her husband are thrilled to be putting down roots in the community. As a performer, Jessica has traveled around the world, but throughout her career teaching has been one of her most important focuses. "As a relative newcomer to the DC area, growing my private studio has been a great way to get involved in the community. My teaching style is individualized, but I always try to include two important things: building a strong basic skill set, and developing creativity."

Whether your goal is to make it into All-State, give a solo recital, play tunes at family gatherings, or just try something new for the very first time, I will help you succeed and have a good time along
the way.

In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.

Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in either living room or upstairs office; Steinway baby grand piano in living room;

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect piano students to have daily access to either a piano or a keyboard with 88 full-sized, weighted keys. Bass or cello students must have their own bass or cello.

*** Specialties ***
classical, baroque, renaissance

I really enjoy taking piano lessons with Jessica. It had been 40 years since I took lessons (as a teenager). Jessica's manner as well as her knowledge and love of music is just what I was hoping to find in a teacher. Her ability to explain musical concepts and her thoughtful approach to teaching has far surpassed my expectations. She gives great constructive feedback and ensures that you understand what she is saying. She is very positive and patient. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with her and recommend her strongly.

My lessons are designed to provide students with a foundation that not only carries over to each new piece of music, but also manifests in the individual. Through Ear Training, Theory, Piano Pedagogy and Sight Reading my students will learn to trust the quality and not just the quantity of what they know.

About Justin
Hello^^ My name is Justin. I studied Music Composition and Piano at Towson University, and I've been teaching for over Nine years. A few things I would like you to know about me are that I love video games, cartoons, and movies. I especially love the music found in them. Teaching, for me, is a way to learn. If something doesn't make sense we must figure out what's going on inside the mind. By discovering the best way for a student to learn or how a student learns best, already, we have a gateway to endless potential.

When our daughter said she wanted to take piano lessons, we checked out several instructors in various teaching settings. We feel very fortunate to have found Justin for our 10yr young daughter's first piano lessons! His approach with her has invited her to want to learn and do well. He selected just the right books for her lessons and is also helping her learn a song she wants to play from one of her favorite bands. This keeps her engaged with other aspects of skill building and music reading! He also wrote out a clear description of what she is to include in home practice sessions. We definitely recommend Justin.

I can teach you to play piano in a mindful, body-conscious way (which I find more relaxing and fulfilling). My specialties include any/all of the following: beginner/intermediate piano (any style, including classical and pop/jazz), teaching music reading/theory, learning to playing by ear/with chords, accompanying oneself while singing, learning to arrange/write music and working with individual/special needs.

Though I am not a concert pianist/accompanist by trade, I have 12 years of piano teaching experience, and have worked steadily as a singer-songwriter and in pop, rock and variety bands (as a keyboard player).

About Jennifer
I am a professional singer-songwriter and have been teaching lessons fulltime for the last 12 years. I teach students of all ages and levels of experience. My current range of students include: kids with learning/developmental disabilities, teenagers who have starred in school musicals, and performing adult singer-songwriters. Whatever your background or desire, I can help you to cultivate your unique musical potential, and to strengthen your creative voice.

As a professional vocalist and pianist, I have worked freelance, in a variety of settings, over the years--including solo, in wedding bands, small jazz and rock/pop groups and with big bands. I have been singing with the Mood Swings Big Band for 6+ years. During that time, we have performed at the White House, the Chamber of Commerce and in Kennebunkport, Maine (at the Bush e
state).

I also have an extensive professional and personal background in meditation (10 years), astrology (5 years) and healing (particularly Reiki, 4 years). I am very interested in the intersection between a healing/mindfulness-awareness approach and singing/playing piano.

About Travis
Hi,

My name is Travis, and I have been playing trumpet for 17 years. I have been teaching for 8. I love working with new students, and became more focused on private lessons during my Sophomore year in college. Speaking of which, I earned a Bachelors of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Maryland College Park.

While there, I played with the Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra and Jazz Band. I am also a regular performer with the Prince Georges Philharmonic.

As each student is different, so is my technique and teaching method. Generally, I have students work through the fundamentals of the instrument including fingerings, embouchure, breathing and scales. Once mastered, the more difficult obstacles such as range, dexterity, repertoire and endurance are approached. I do not work with a set schedule for s
tudents, and tailor the lesson plan for the student's growth and practice.

I use the Faber method books for children including the Lesson, Theory & Performance books which all work together to introduce and reinforce musical concepts. I follow the student's interest is specific genres of classical, jazz, blues or pop and add pieces from those genres that students will find interesting and exciting.

For teens & adults, I generally use an all-in-one method book and then allow students to choose what pieces they'd like to work on, or suggest pieces based on the style of music that student prefers

For younger children just starting out, I implement early childhood techniques to include creative movement and percussion instruments. These enhance and reinforce the musical elements we are working on in piano. They also extend the attention span and infuse the lesson with a sense of action and fun.

About Rachel
A graduate of Duke Ellington School for the Arts and the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Rachel Panay is a 6 time Billboard Club charting singer/songwriter in the Dance music genre. She recently returned to her musical theatre roots appearing as Rose in Theatre Lab's production of The Secret Garden. Rachel really put my 12 year old daughter at ease. We only purchased five lessons to work on my daughter's role in a musical. Rachel helped her immensely and gave her the vocal self-confidence she needed. In addition to her vocal talents, her stage experience was a big plus. Hopefully, we'll be able to continue with lessons in the near future.

My classes consist on learning the basics of playing piano. We will go through some music theory to be able to read and understand a piano score; with simple exercises, students will practice playing with one hand at a time, and then playing with both hands at the same time. We will also practice and learn how to play different chords and their inversions. Scales are also very important to play very well from the beginning. With these components, you will get a solid start to keep improving and playing better and better each time.

About Norma
Hi! My name is Norma. I was born in Bogota, Colombia. I fell in love with music when I was a little girl, so I began taking music lessons when I was 8 years old. First, I took violin lessons, and after four years decided to switch to the piano.
I also loved to sing. So I took piano lessons and singing lessons at the same time, and after a while I dedicated myself completely to singing. After that I graduated from my music school with a degree in vocal technique.
I have sung in several venues in Colombia and in the US. as a solo artist and as a band member as well.
I also worked at the School of Rock in Coral Springs, Florida for four years, which gave me much more experience with rock music and teaching kids of all ages.
I really hope I can help you reach your goals, and to love music the same way I do.

Excellent music teacher and my child is enjoys going to Ms. Ann classes.

To mention that my family knows Mrs. Ann Keen for over 10 years. We happened to know Ms. Ann from the NIST Child Care Center because she worked as a preschool teacher with both of my kids. Being a wonderful teacher my kids keep in touch with her. They absolutely loved her. My daughter started taking piano lessons with Ms. Ann when she was 4.5years old. Ms. Ann had taught everything, starting with all background of music elements and following deeper into techniques. patient with kids. Experienced teacher of 5 years, specializing in the beginner piano student! All ages welcome. Lessons are customized and catered to the needs/goals of each student. Not only will you be playing songs in no time, but you will be building a strong foundation of note reading, music theory, ear training, sight reading, technique, and more. We will have fun learning to play various genres. Let's get started!

About Tia
I started the violin when I was 8 years old at my hometown elementary school. I grew up in a very artsy town, which provided me the opportunities to learn music from around the world. These are a few reason why I love to collaborate with other musicians, create youtube videos, play different genres and mixes of various genres, writing my own pieces, traveling, and teaching others the love of music.

As I live in the Washington D.C. Metro area, scheduling/travel is flexible for me and easy to coordinate around my students' schedules. If there is a preferred lesson for your child not listed as "available" please feel free to inquire directly - we will find a time that works!

Violin students can expect to improve week to week in their technique. Every student learns uniquely; I teach students mindfulness and correct instrument techniques,
and apply foundational techniques in order to unlock their own individual sound. I can help any student to play with freedom, confidence, and expression.

I teach beginner piano students of all different ages. I can teach students to read music and pursue classical excellence, to learn how to play contemporary music using chord sheets, or both depending on the goals and preference of the student.

My passion is music and I firmly believe that great technique is essential to any and every style when learning an instrument. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to become a better musician!
