I have been playing Bodhran for about 3 years now. Needless to say, my favorite experiences with it have been playing in Ireland with the other trad musicians there. Nothing beats a session in Doolin!

About Joe

I absolutely love teaching music! After over 20 years of teaching, performing, writing, and recording in all styles/genres, it continues to be a great adventure. It is a joy to pass this on to others...especially seeing my students that never touched the instrument going on to be very proficient

Bodhran:
The bodhrán is an Irish frame drum ranging from 10 to 26 in in diameter. One or two crossbars, sometimes removable, may be inside the frame, but this is increasingly rare on modern instruments. Some professional modern bodhráns integrate mechanical tuning systems similar to those used on drums found in drum kits. It is usually with a hex key that the bodhrán skins are tightened or loosened depending on the atmospheric conditions. The student will learn hand techniques, rhythms, songs, and how to tune the drum head.

I will definitely be expanding my accordion skills & of music theory . I’ll also be adding some 😎 Jazz Standards to my repertoire ☺️.

Karen was not prepared for the lesson. She spent 15 minutes trying to send me photos from a beginner Tabla book available on Amazon. She did not own a set of Tabla drums. She ensured me she could teach anything, but could not pronounce the words used for proper Tabla technique, knew no history and could not even teach me to tune. She literally was reading out of the book figuring it out along the way. I lost a lot of trust from this and asked for a full refund for future lessons.

I've played guitar since I was only eight years old (over 20 years!) in many different bands, styles, and genres. I played in a traditional Irish ensemble when I was in college and have since picked up bodhran and several other instruments used in that style. I love playing and teaching Irish music.

About Gio

I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums. I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is wh

Mariano was an amazing percussion and drum set teacher. His lessons were engaging and productive, and he was always able to communicate an idea or musical concept in a way that I was able to understand and connect with. After about 2 years of lessons I was accepted into the Orange County School of the Arts for percussion and I owe my success to the lessons I took with Mariano. I continued lessening throughout high school and my skill level contined to grow. What I loved about Mariano's teaching was his unique ability to take very simple exercises and make them more difficult and therefore much more beneficial. Along with stressing the importance of basic technique, he would constantly inteoduce me to new things - Afro beats, traditional grip, Latin beats, new ways to sight read, and 4 mallet marimba technique. I would highly suggest taking lessons with Mariano if you are looking for a fun, encouraging teacher who has lots of experience with a variety of percussion performance!

Private Bodhran Lessons Near You

The bodhran is a type of frame drum. The drums are usually between 10 and 26 inches in diameter and between three and eight inches deep. One side of the frame is left open, while the other features a drum head made from stretched goatskin or another synthetic material. Traditional bodhrans also featured two crossbars on the back of the drum, but most modern iterations are left completely open.

Although the bodhran, specifically, is native to Ireland, its simple design has many similarities to frame drums from Northern Africa and the Middle East. One of the primary differences between these drums is the style of playing. The bodhran is traditionally hit with beaters or tippers made from wood or bone, while comparable drums from other parts of the world are traditionally played wi

Why Learn to Play Bodhran?

Many percussionists turn to the bodhran out of their love for traditional Irish and Celtic music. The bodhran's most commonly played alongside other instruments or alone with a person singing traditional folk melodies.

Due to the popularity of the tambourine throughout Ireland, Scotland, and England, the bodhran became a favorite stand-in for the tambourine, when one wasn't readily available. As a result, bodhran is also often included in the music of these areas in addition to that of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Cape Breton.

The bodhran is also a tunable drum. Its tone can be adjusted so that it's in tune with other instruments in a band or a singer's voice. This makes it even more versatile.
