Piano lessons consist of technique, ear training, music reading, and music theory. NYSSMA preparation is available.
I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.
I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.
I am currently available to teach Guitar, Music Theory and Beginner Piano.
Aside from teaching private guitar and piano lessons and teaching General music and Chorus in school, I perform and accompany singers as a guitarist in churches on Long Island.
For your added security, I've been VIRTUS trained with the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre and fingerprinted with the NYS Education department.
My system of guitar training includes:
* Right hand and Left hand technical exercises geared towards developing coordination and confidence;
work in music reading of standard music notation and TAB;
* Fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques.
* Song repertoire knowledge and memorization
*Solo guitar interpretation of popular songs as well as accompaniment styles appropriate for backing your or another's voice; *Ear-training and Music theory is incorporated into each lesson.
NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.
Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.
*** Lesson Details *** My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.
After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.
Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.
NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.
The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.
The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.
For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.
*** Studio Equipment *** I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.
*** Travel Equipment *** I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.
*** Specialties *** Pick-style and finger-style guitar, both acoustic and electric; music reading, music theory; re-harmonization and arrangement techniques to make a song your own!
Hello! I am a pianist, vocalist, songwriter, actress, director and teacher. I have a lifetime of experience in the performing arts (I started performing at 6 years of age) and many years teaching music and theater arts! What are you looking for? If one of the answers to this question is a teacher who truly understands how to communicate in an understanding and fun way...then let my years of experience help you to achieve your goals. I have taught many students of all ages and levels in private, public, and workshop environments. I always try to get to know my students - learn about their musical experiences as well as skill level; tastes; and what they want to achieve at the piano. I teach in the classical method and specialize in applying this method to various genres such as pop, rock, jazz and Broadway! I have coached students for the Young Musicians Festival (The Schubert Club of CT) and all of my students were judged with the highest marks. I have also directed ...
Sharon knew at a very young age that the arts were her life and doesn't remember a time when she wasn't singing, dancing and acting. She began her professional singing and acting career at the age of six years old and has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. She plays the piano and is a versatile musician with a strong foundation in the classical method that really rocks!! Sharon grew up in Brooklyn, NY and has trained with some of New York City's premier voice, piano and acting teachers. Sharon majored in Theater and graduated cum laude with honors in theater. She is a certified public school theater teacher and has worked with hundreds of performing arts students. As a private instructor, she has guided her students in piano, voice, and acting. Sharon is a fun and innovative teacher. Her wealth of experiences has made
her a well-rounded teacher. She has a great sense of humor with a serious commitment to her art and her students. A winning combination for you!
Sharon is friendly, supportive and super encouraging. She moves at the student’s pace, and keeps a good handle on the progression of the lesson, so that you get a good chunk of instruction/learning while not being overwhelmed. I’m a newbie at music instruction, and Sharon was wonderful in every aspect for someone starting like me. I’m sure she’d be just as fabulous for a more experienced piano player.

Fantastic first lesson. Sharon is great to work with. She explains the process and then we get right into the music and vocals. She's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I'm looking forward to my next lesson.

Sharon is a lovely and outgoing woman. I’m new to piano and reading music, but she is so patient and encouraging. I’d recommend her to a piano newbie like myself. She also has the cutest pup that keeps us company during the lessons.
Instructions are conducted by using custom curriculum for every student. The curriculum is based on student's desires and abilities. Teaching material is combined from several books that include American and European authors
Classically trained, energetic, experienced and creative music teacher with a proven ability to get the very best out of pupils; experienced in identifying the appropriate resources necessary for a subject matter and ensuring that they are used efficiently and effectively. Most of my students read and play simple music after 2-3 classes of active instruction.
I also specialize in special needs students.
All my musical knowledge and expertise was attained in Eastern Europe with an extensive music pedagogy training. I play and teach piano, upright bass, bass guitar and a range of other instruments. Over the years I taught basic piano, the beginner violin, viola, cello and a variety of school instruments such as recorder and xylophone. I also teach advanced music theory, harmony and basics of composition and orchestral arranging req
uired for music colleges. I especially find it rewarding working with beginners and the opportunity to show them the amazing world of listening, playing and making music.
The teaching begins with identifying student's musical needs, goals and tastes. Students are taught a stimulating, thorough, and graduated course of recital solos, theory, technical studies, and classic repertoire. For those wishing to pursue more of a classical approach to music, there are proven methods to accomplish that goal established by European master teachers and pedagogues. Also, I can teach the know-how of Jazz and Blues though gradual lessons that cover basic theory, scales and chords up to melody and harmony development.
*** Lesson Details *** The learning process should be, for the most part, fun and based upon a strong relationship between the teacher and the student. Curriculum and lesson plans are based on student's abilities and aspirations with appropriate balance between theoretical and practical work. The lesson material is always carefully chosen, and when necessary, adapted to specific learning needs.
With a proper approach, everyone can learn to play music. Whether you want to pursue a music career, or just play for fun and enjoyment I can help you attain your goals. From basic piano and stringed instruments, to advanced theory, harmony, composition and improvisation to jazz, pop and rock.
Classes are not based on a single source or book. I provide other exercises in printed form for students to keep and take home.
*** Studio Equipment *** Extensive e-library and ability to print any required material on the spot. Instant access to many on-line sheet music resources. Two high end digital keyboards, two violins, viola, cello, upright bass, bass guitar and amplifier, music stands, stereo equipment with a large CD collection of just any conceivable music style.. Assorted school instruments: recorder (soprano and tenor), xylophone. Various music charts and a large library of music resources and other books;
*** Travel Equipment *** Full size and a school grade digital keyboards , bass guitar, amplifier, staff paper and other printed resources, violin, viola, spare parts, maintenance tools and equipment.

Peter has exceeded my expectations, I look forward for my lesson every week. I honestly can say He is the best teacher I’ve ever had. I am a 44 yo violin beginner student who has had 5 teachers in the last 6 years, I didn’t learn much with them, this been said, with Peter in just 3 months I feel I have learned more than my other teachers. Peter is so, so patient and extremely professional. I am very pleased to have found such a wonderful teacher.

Peter is always on time, patient with beginners, and gives valuable guidance.

Peter has been teaching bass to our son for several years and our son has become quite proficient. It's a bonus that Peter is unfailingly upbeat, professional, and a pleasure to have around. He truly loves music and conveys his appreciation to his students - so much so that now my husband is taking cello lessons from Peter, too.
classical, jazz, pop, rock, blues- learn what you want! emphasis on musicianship and learning how to work with a group - pianists are in high demand everywhere, and I want my students to be able to accompany other students recitals, or just learn how to jam with friends!

A practical fun approach to learning how to learn, play and practice. I teach students the fundamentals of music while learning how to play the piano and learn the music they love. I'm also willing to travel further than the 25 mile radius in Connecticut and New York.
I'm an experienced teacher with a background as a full time performing musician. Music was a big part of my life from an early age and I've stuck with it pursuing it as a career path. I graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Studio Music and Jazz Performance and since have been teaching and performing. The focus of my music career has always been playing original music with bands but teaching has always been something I've loved too.
I've formally studied both classical and jazz while playing in rock bands and learned to see the similarities in all forms of music. My favorite thing to teach people is songs they love and how to use the fundamentals of music to make playing their songs fun. Writing practical simple charts that show how songs work opens music up for people in ways they didn't think possible. Playing an
d singing together for the first time or finally having the light bulb moment when reading music makes sense is something magical. It's an amazing feeling and helping people learn how to makes me happy.
I've been teaching music for over twenty years and look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge with new students.
I've been working with Brian for four months now and have made excellent progress on guitar. Brian quickly adjusted to my experience level and has done an outstanding job of removing long-standing bad habits and reinforcing the good ones. He has a fresh approach which ensures students don't get bored and, best of all, instills confidence and a good stage presence. I'm on my way to being a better guitar player but more importantly, a better musician. I recommend Brian without reservation.

Brian has been great , he patiently provides simple tangible explanations for both guitar play and music theory. He is building a solid foundation for my musical growth and more importantly supporting and enhancing my love of music. I give Brian my highest recommendation, he's a natural teacher

"Neil is a great piano teacher. I took many years of lessons growing up and then stopped playing the piano for 10 years. I picked it up a year ago learni
ng new pieces and hit a "wall" where I wasn't able to improve myself, so I wanted to find a teacher that could help. Neil has been great - proactively pointing out areas where I tense up or could use a different fingering, suggesting helpful sight reading pieces, and even helping me find a better keyboard for my own practice at home. He has a lot of experience and good advice."

My son achieved first division ratings for his piano solos two years in a row under Nancy's direction. My daughter was selected to perform at recitals and talent shows based on her skills learned by Nancy. As a music teacher myself, I highly recommend Nancy to any student wishing to learn the piano."
