∙ finger style, pick
∙ slapping/popping
∙ groove, rhythms and playing time
∙ time signatures, walking bass lines,

All of my students learn:

Sight reading (standard notation/tablature)
∙ music theory & ear training
∙ rhythm / timing (including reading rhythms)

We will focus 1/2 of the lesson on repertoire and 1/2 the lesson on technique. Many of my students text/email me a few days prior to our scheduled lesson with a song selection for the week. I focus our lesson's technical study with the song in mind. It has proven to be very effective and makes the technique and theory are less "boring."

I've been training with Eric for almost a year now and I plan to continue for as long as I can. Learning to sing can be a difficult and nerve-wracking experience but Eric makes the journey much easier.

Eric makes you feel completely at ease during the lessons and does a great job of identifying and relating to the problems you have. Since he's had a wide range of singing experience, he is able to approach the lessons with various techniques to find something that works for you. I would highly recommend Eric if you're looking for a voice coach who is patient and committed to your success!

My students are often young beginners. We have a lot of fun navigating through the process of learning to read music and play songs that they enjoy. Learning to read music and understand theory are both elements I strongly emphasize. I am always open to looking for specific pieces or styles that students want to play. Sometimes students just want to learn how to play one complicated piece and that's fine too!

I like both Thompson and Alfred as curriculum and often substitute along the way with sheet music that compliments the books we work from. I work to customize my approach for each individual so that they can have the most effective and enjoyable experience possible as they learn to play the piano.

About Susannah
Hello! I am a graduate student living and working in Manhattan. I am studying at Columbia University and preparing for medical school. Professionally and personally, my interest and areas of expertise are interdisciplinary! I have 19 years of experience playing piano and more than seven years experience teaching.

As someone who has had literally hundreds of piano lessons, I can appreciate what makes a lesson "good". I remember as a kid always feeling bad for my friends who dreaded going to their music lessons. I was lucky to have wonderful teachers and enjoy my experience studying and playing music.

As a teacher, I am committed to making sure my students have the same positive experience. I take having  fun seriously with my students regardless of age. Playing the piano has way too many benefits to become a chore! I have high expe
ctations for my students and help them reach their goals in a low-key, non-stressful, pleasant environment.

He had been my piano teacher and mentor for 5+years. Equipped with marvelous knowledge and meticulousness on music and piano performance, he is capable and willing to uphold his professionalism. He is not going to move on until you have mastered certain fundamental musical ideations or techniques. Mr. Brian is not the type of teacher who only talks in theory or with instructions, but he can actually perform what he demands from students. Hence, he is doubtlessly a marvelous piano performer, as well as instructor, where I am certain students can learn a lot from his lessons.

Ella is a wonderful teacher. She truly loves what she does, and it shows in the way she teaches. My daughter responds so well to her. Ella has a warm, positive approach to teaching, but is gently strict when she needs to be, and is clearly a pro at what she does. We tried a teacher before Ella, but her communication style was just not right for children. Want your child to start getting into music and piano? My approach is that music lessons need to be fun! We will play games, jump, dance, and sing. Through all that, the students will learn piano, music theory, sight-reading, and ear training.

About Dor
Dor is an Israeli-born vocalist based in Brooklyn, New York. She began her music education at the age of five when she studied classical piano. During those years she had experimented with saxophone and guitar but soon realized that her voice is her most powerful instrument.

In 2009, she started taking classical voice lessons and joined the “Moran Singers Ensemble” (Israel). With them, she performed many high profile national and international events, and eventually managed the ensemble during her last year there. In 2014 Dor joined the prestigious “Gary Bertini Israeli Choir”, directed by Ronen Borshevsky, where she participated in several co-productions with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by legendary Zubin Metta.

In 2015 Dor moved to New York to continue her academic studies at The New school for Jazz and Contempor
ary Music, after receiving a sizeable scholarship from the school itself.

In 2016 she formed a vocal jazz quartet, a collaboration with Israeli composer Rami Bar-David.

Dor is also the leader of 'SAGE', a progressive-rock band, playing her original music.

Dor is extremely detail oriented - she will make sure that you learn about every little nuanced bit of your voice. For me personally, not only has she helped me improve my singing, but also she has helped me SPEAK better. Yes that's right - her vocal techniques has actually helped me a ton when I was interviewing for new jobs to sound more confident and composed. I firmly believe that experiencing music and being inquisitive are invaluable to learning how to play music. Studying music is not just about learning the material and regurgitating it, but discovering why a moment of music is cool and examining what about that moment makes it hit you in the right spot. I will be the guide that the student needs when he or she does not know where to go with his or her studies, but I want to encourage students to bring in music they want to learn, or discuss music that they think is cool and use that as a jumping off point into our lessons.

About Sam
With beginning students, I will lay out the fundamentals, teaching all of the scales, basic chords, key signatures and time signatures, and gradually integrate strategies for reading music. Depending on what the student is interested in learning, I will pull from my pool of repertoire - we could be studying a Bach Invention at the same time as a Billy Joel song. Classical music is great for technique and in many ways textbook for teaching harmony, but I play and love contemporary music, and will teach anything, as long as there is some form of musical knowledge to be gained from the material.
