I am a 2008 graduate of the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree. While at North Texas I taught trumpet lessons in the Denton area. I have also taught piano, clarinet, and saxophone as well as all the other brass instruments. I have performed with the UNT Concert Band, the UNT Brass Band, the UNT Nine O'Clock Lab Band, the Collin County Jazz Band, and the San Jose Metropolitan Band.

Currently, I teach clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and piano in the DFW area. I also play trumpet in the both the Frisco Community Band and the Frisco Community Brass Ensemble.

*** Studio Equipment ***
All students are required to purchase the Musician's Practice Planner, which you can find at any music store. You will also need to g
et any books that we play through (but I'll give you time to get them, so don't worry.) Any books that we use will be easy to find and won't cost a whole lot of money.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will always bring my instrument with me when I attend a lesson, so I expect my students to do the same when they come to my studio. Also, make sure you have any books and music that we will be playing out of. I always have a copy of anything that we are playing, so I expect the student to have a copy as well.

Piano studio of a well established piano teacher in the Greenville, Winterville, Ayden, Grifton and Kinston area is currently accepting new students. Students may begin lessons at any time of the year. Limited openings available so contact me today.

Lessons are for children ages 5 through adults. Cheap lesson fees do not necessarily insure that you will be taking piano lessons from an experienced and qualified teacher or have the best lesson experience. I want to produce students who play accurately and wonderfully expressively. I want them to be independent enough to figure out how to play familiar as well as unfamiliar music, both by ear and through reading musical notation. I want them to be intelligent musicians, able to understand and describe music they are hearing.

I enjoy working with most of my students, especially those who practice hard. I find all students unique and they response differently to my requests or questions. I feel that very often I need to react spontaneously to their responses. For the beginners I mainly focus on reading musical notes and learning correct rhythmic values. With beginners who haven’t played the piano at all I teach finger exercises written finger numbers only. Then I use Piano Adventures theory, lesson, technique and artistry, performance, and popular music books. Although Alfred’s and Bastien’s methods are well known, I prefer Piano Adventures because they introduce the coordination of right and left hand in more progressive manner. At the beginning the following will be covered.
• Postures at the piano, finger numbers, high and low on the keyboard
• Music alphabet, Intervals
• Musical form, Dynamic marks

I was born and raised in S. Korea. I studied piano performance at Cleveland Institute of Music and University of Iowa and hold DMA in piano performance and pedagogy from University of Iowa. Other than music I hold BS in Computer Science from State University of New York, Albany. I began to play the piano when I was six and won prizes from the local competitions sponsored by Daegu Board of Education and Dague Division of Korean Musicians Association. I performed in major cities in Korea, the US and Europe such as Seoul, Paris, Vienna, Cleveland and Philadelphia. I participated in The Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition during my last year at University of Iowa and was mentioned by the judges as a technically very good pianist. For additional studies I participated in Aspen Music School and Music Festival, Claude Elffere's Master
Class (Paris, France), Mozarteum Summer School and Music Festival (Salzburg, Austria) and Vienna Music Seminar (Vienna, Austria). I was awarded scholarship when I attended Cleveland Inctitute of Music and Aspen Music School. My teachers include Jinsook Kim, Donald Walker, Paul Schenly, Gabriel Chodos, Viktor Teuflmayr, Claude Elffere, Anne Epperson, and Vivian Hornik Weilestein.
Previously I was a rehearsal pianist of operas, II pagliacci by Leoncavallo with Daegu Opera, Snatched by the Gods and Broken Strings by Param Vir with University of Iowa Theatre department, and contemporary operas based on the works by Francesca Cavalli with Temple University Opera. Other than operas I worked with Missoula Children’s Theatre for the performance of Aladdin. As a collaborative pianist I performed in numerous concerts and performed in master classes of Joseph Silverstein, Steven Isserlis, Julliard Quartet, Isaac Stern and Richard Stoltzman. I have been teaching piano at the university settings (University of Iowa and Catholic University of Daegu) or privately for 10+ years. WHAT TO EXPECT
When meeting with a student for the first time we always discuss his or her needs or goals. After that, we get into the foundation of building technique, starting with posture. Next, the student is assigned breathing exercises to practice. These exercises are structured to energize the body and manage the breath. Every single student learns about appoggio. This is the term used for the process of suspending exhalation while keeping the torso in the position of inhalation by using the transverse abdominis and obliques. Students also learn that the action of the diaphragm is involuntary, therefore the exercises in which we engage are in place to have command over physical activity that we can control.

A TYPICAL VOICE LESSON
After posture and breathing are addressed the students begin to learn how to produce tone,
which encompasses the vocal onset and the closure of the vocal folds. Students realize that proper breath management and producing tone go hand in hand. The ideal that the student and I work towards is a balance between superfluous air flow and and pressed pressure. This concept leads to a clean onset in which the edges of the vocal folds cleanly come together and stay closed during singing.

Students also learn how to negotiate and coordinate the vocal registers. This means that every student who walks into my studio learns where and what the larynx is. It is my job to be a second set of ears to help the student optimize his or her tone quality by maximizing vocal resonance. This concept may be different across genres, however every student learns how to begin coordinating the vocal process.

HOW I TEACH
My aim as a teacher of voice is to be flexible and innovative, and provide students with a clear and honest assessment. I strive to explain to each singer exactly how to complete a task, whether maintaining the position of inhalation or correcting posture. In lessons, I refrain from being demonstrative so that the student can find his or her own unique sound without attempting to copy my sound. I use this method so that the student learns how to be her own teacher. This way, the student will be able to identify and correct her own vocal problems. When I am not present, the student will have confidence in her skills and can make educated corrections in practice, rehearsals, and in performances.

TECHNIQUE
Throughout the course of lessons, it is my job to identify the most effective resonating space for the student and give her the skills to maintain that space. It is through the combination of effective breath management using appoggio and flow-phonation that the student becomes most efficient. Finding the most efficient technique for the student involves discovering the proper laryngeal position for the student’s voice type and by practicing continuity through all of the registers.

As all of the aspects of technique are being built in the studio, it is my job to ensure that I am building a musician. This means that I go over how the student needs to learn a piece and how to perform a piece. Often times with young students, they do not have the musical skills to teach themselves the pieces assigned. Sometimes the voice teacher’s job is to “plunk out the notes.” I highly encourage my students to take piano lessons and to use technology resources to aid them in building musicianship so they feel confident reading music. This process takes time, but it is the first step in building a competent performer.

MY GOALS
I always cater to the students tastes while still meeting requirements, if any. I believe that this fosters joy and excitement in music. My goal as a voice teacher not only involves building a good singer, but creating a performer. I make sure that I not only find performing opportunities for my students, but also I create them. Every semester I hold a studio recital for my students to perform their repertoire in front of an audience. In the Fall of 2015 I founded a local opera company in order to bring classical music to the community. My students made up the chorus of Handel’s Messiah that we performed that December. In addition, I have invited my students to participate in the church choir I direct every week. I believe that learning how to sing must take place in the studio, but the most important thing that I can do as a teacher is to make sure that the student knows how to transfer the skills learned in the classroom to real-world performing experiences.

APPROACH
I believe in a holistic approach to teaching, which involves connection to the text and acting. Though I cover many of these aspects in the studio, it is extremely beneficial for students to go outside of the studio and engage in physical courses such as yoga, Alexander technique, acting and dance. I personally engage in these activities to relate to my students and to be able to explain how we need to engage the body in singing. I also encourage my students to have coachings with other professionals to gain more insight into their repertoire.

Not every student who comes to my studio wants to sing opera. Many students want to sing in choir, in church, or just for fun. Overall, I always come from a place of acceptance and non judgement. Every voice is unique and I strive to help my students not only reach their goals, but surpass them.

ABOUT ME
I have been teaching voice and piano since 2010. Not only an avid teacher, I have performed in music festivals all over the world including The American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, Accademia Europa dell’Opera in Lucca, Italy, Angel Vocal Art in Los Angeles, CA, Russian Opera Workshop in Philadelphia, PA, and Highlands Opera Studio in Haliburton, Ontario. I have also performed with companies including Opera San Jose, The Napa Valley Music Association, The San Francisco Youth Chamber Orchestra, Opera on the Spot, and The Solano Chamber Society.

I earned my Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance, Pedagogy, and Literature from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA with Kevin McMillan. During my time in Harrisonburg, I founded Harrisonburg Opera Theatre and was the church choir director at Sunnyside Retirement Community Meredith Chapel.
I completed my Post-Graduate Artist Diploma in Voice at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of acclaimed opera singer, Deborah Voigt. While in San Francisco, I interned in the Education Department of San Francisco Opera and taught Kindergarten and First grade music with the San Francisco Conservatory in the Schools mentor-ship program. I also received a full scholarship to attend the Rubin Institute for Music Criticism.

I earned my Masters of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of California, Irvine at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts where she sang the National Anthem for President Barack Obama at the school’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. At UC Irvine, I received critical acclaim for my portrayal of Euridice in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, and as the Soprano in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater.

Love Dr. M! I've wanted to take voice lessons forever but I have been hesitant due to my lack of experience. Dr. M not only made me feel comfortable but also confident in the voice that I have. She's personal and warm but also very professional. She never gets frustrated with obstacles I face in my lessons; instead she helps ways to overcome them.

I've never left a lesson feeling disappointed with my ability, something I experienced with other voice teachers. I feel confident in my voice and I owe that all to Melissa. For instance, during one lessons I was feeling a little off. Rather than getting frustrated she helped me focus on great ways to approach singing when not feeling your best. Dr. McCann rocks!

If you are looking for a voice teacher new or experienced I would definitely recommend Dr. McCann. Top notch lessons and overall awesome woman!

Dr. M. is a phenomenal teacher who does a great job customizing her lessons to the needs of the student. She has helped me make amazing progress with my voice, and just as importantly has helped me gain the confidence to be able to sign.

Her lessons are fun, effective, and very positive. All of which help the student learn more and get more out of the lesson. I highly recommend Dr. M. as a teacher to anyone (at any level) who is interested in becoming a better singer.

Lipeng is very patient and encouraging for my beginner 11-year-old, using the video format well to demonstrate the songs and watch the student. She has been a good fit for a player who is motivated to improve but can complain a little bit about practicing everyday.

I played piano for Brigham Young University's Dance Department for 7 years - sight reading or playing without any music for Ballet and Modern Dance classes. I think sight reading is one of the best piano skills to have because you can play whatever you want in a fraction of the time. So my goal is to get students there. Most people aren't looking to become concert pianists, and my goal isn't that. It's to help them play well enough to really enjoy it and be very satisfied with their progress.

My goal is to help students ENJOY the piano by finding ways to make it easier and doable. I have a very useful approach in helping students become self sufficient to sight read very well, to see patterns, understand music theory to either help them play well, or to even create their own music(I compose a lot of great music as well)

I couldn't sight read very well until I was 16, but I had a great sight reading teacher that showed me how to develop it, and now I can say that I'm one of the best sight readers out there that I know. I was a ballet pianist at Brigham Young University for several years where all I did was sightread binders full of ballet/classical music. I play for choirs, church congregations, jazz bands, or musical jam sessions all the time, and I couldn't do that at all if I didn't learn how to sight read well.
I would love to help you learn the piano, and I will do my best to make learning as effective as possible. I especially enjoy teaching those who quit and would like to try again, because I know what that is like.

Concerning my musical background, I've played, arranged, and composed piano for choirs, bands, jazz combos, singers. I've been in bands all my life, and have composed for jazz bands, choirs, and orchestras at BYU and in Eastern Europe. I also play about 10 different instruments. I won two Student Emmys in Hollywood for my compositions to BYU's animations in 2010 & 2014.

I am currently writing music for video games.

Initially my son was reluctant to take lessons. He would conveniently forget the time and day of his lesson. But after three lessons the conversation changed, he reminded me of the time and day. Over the last four lessons Richard and my son have recorded a song. I recommend Richard to any Parent with children that are interested in music as the subject matter. He is accomplished, gracious, demanding but patient.

As highly as Dave's previous reviews spoke of him, he still managed to exceed any expectations I had. He was calm, reassuring, and it was immediately apparent just how comfortable he is teaching small children. Dave managed to hold the attention of my 5 year old for the entire lesson, and left my son excited about learning and confident that he can do it! I feel very fortunate to have found such a great teacher for my child.

Hi! I have a Bachelors in Music Education and have experience teaching many beginning students! I have 3 children and decided to give up regular teaching to be with them. I believe that tone production is the most important area of study. It doesn’t matter what you can play if it doesn’t sound good. Hello! I started my love of music at a young age with my family playing and singing at family functions. That turned into a wanting to learn how to play the flute and I went up through high school with that instrument. After high school I branched out more into vocal performance. After that I joined a traveling performance group. No not the circus! I joined Drum and Bugle Corp. They taught be how to play the Baritone and I marched a straight Baritone. I then learned the Mellophone and marched that after. Since I had experience with Drum Corp Marching I taught over 10 different marching programs over many different years. I graduated from College with my Bachelors in Music Education and was a music director until I had my children and decided to give up regular teaching. After all of the years I spent honing my craft I decided t
o continue giving lessons. I have the most experience with Flute, but can teach many other instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone/euphonium, piano.

With classical piano training at young age, I've built up a solid musical background, with a profound knowledge of music theory. I earned my level 10 piano performance certificate, which is the highest level, at age 13. I am fluent with a variety of classical pieces, including ones from Bach and Chopin.

When I was 11, I was able to quickly pick up percussion. I've been in the school band beginning in middle school and continuing through high school (Shanghai No. 3 Girls' High School) and college (Shanghai Jiaotong University).

In my spare time, I enjoy listening to and playing modern popular music as well. I frequently go to a variet

Lilan is an excellent piano instructor with her professional skills and years of playing experience. She provided me with practical guidance on my playing skills as well as the emotion in the performance with her on-stage performance experience. She is also a responsible instructor. She will play the chapter by herself to let me better understand the performance. Thanks to her professional instructions and patience, my playing skills have been improved a lot. I will recommend Lilan to everyone who would like to expect an improvement on their playing skills as well as receiving great instruction experience.
