When I came to Bill I had hopes and dreams of having the ability to read and play any kind of piano music. As a child I struggled with reading music during 3 years of lessons with a strict classical teacher, but held on to the dream. I have waited over 50 years to live the dream I am fulfilling now. Bill had me reading and playing any piano arrangement I wanted in 3 months. I play classical, gospel, movie themes and more and loving it all. His unique teaching method inspires you with an "I can do this" attitude. He analyzes who you are, your own style and abilities and raises the bar with every lesson. As I play, he shows me how to enhance my performance with every note. He couples insight with knowledge and his 30+ years of experience to create a true pianist. He tells me I am the composer when I play, own the music. He tells me "don't just play the music, become the music". After 2 years of lessons I am living my dream and preparing for concert level opportunities. Whether young or old (I am 73 years old), Bill can inspire and teach you to play. I often wonder where I would be in the music world if he would have been my childhood teacher. I highly recommend Bill to start your child's music foundation on the right track or for yourself - to live your dream too. Thank you Bill for all you do and who you are!

I am a composer, performer, and producer of progressive acoustic and electroacoustic music. My music is characterized by disjunct, interlocking rhythms; extended harmonies and angular melodies; glitch and soundscape textures; and gradual, additive development. I am a vigorous advocate for musical pluralism and draw inspiration from a smattering of musical influences, including indie and alternative rock, jazz, progressive metal, hip-hop, and EDM.

An avid performer of contemporary music, I compose for and play piano in the brain-funk band Emergency Stopping Only.

For me as a teacher, it is vital to help instill in my students a love for all sorts of music. I am an exceptionally patient teacher, and I aim to be encouraging at all times. It is extremely important to me that my students feel supported and empowered to achieve their highest musical aspirations.

My foremost teaching goal is to help each student discover his or her own musical voice. To achieve this, I customize a program of study for each student to help them eventually reach the point of producing music from their heart.

Playing correct notes, tempos, and dynamics is very important, but should be coupled with a genuine love for the music being played.

With this approach, I have seen my students become more dedicated and more fulfilled in their journey and produce music that stirs the emotions of the listeners.

About Russell

I am a classically trained pianist and am still actively performing as well as teaching. My desire is to pass on my knowledge and experience to another generation of musicians. I love playing and performing for others on the piano. It is this passion coming through in the music that I play tha

Interested in composing and improvising music? Recent New England Conservatory graduate has a unique training in Composition, Jazz Piano, and Music Theory. This is coupled with real world professional experience including his time playing with main stage entertainment, accompanying broadway style singers, and performing nightly solo lounge piano throughout Alaska, Canada, and the Caribbean. His curriculum nurtures the dialectic between love, passion, and excitement being the forefront of musical studies, and a stern understanding of the practical necessities required if a student wishes to take the pursuit to a conservatory and/or professional level. This includes studies in technique relevant to their specific discipline, music theory, ear training, and most importantly listening assignments that broaden the student’s musical palate. All ages and levels welcome.

"Fantastic Journey

I decided to take both piano and voice lessons. She has helped me in detecting areas that I needed to change. She isn't forceful or critical. She is positive yet firm. She is also very pleasant to talk to and very professional. I've been taking these lessons for two months and am planning to continue on. I also love that her location is in the heart of the city where I can get to easily. So far, I am very happy with the progress and excited about what else I can learn."

Perfect for beginners looking for a teacher to get them off the ground, but also perfect for advanced players looking to refresh their skills or take the next step. Would recommend for jazz, classical, and gospel / pop styles.

Great with kids, great with adults, great guy, definitely book him! :)))"

"Jeff is a fantastic music teacher.

He currently teaches piano to my 12 year old daughter. Beyond the technical skills, what makes Jeff different than most teachers is his complete customized / personalized approach. In the world of education, a hot topic is how every student is different and the trend towards personalized learning plans. Jeff actually lives this philosophy. During his first meeting, he spent 30 minutes with me (the parent and person who is paying) understanding my desires, and he spent another 30 minutes with my daughter, understanding her goals and motivations. He then developed an approach that keeps my daughter engaged and motivated, no easy task for a 12 year old with ADD/ADHD.

He mixes teaching traditional piano theory with using modern technology (GarageBand) to create music, as well as focusing on he learning songs that she enjoys (pop music.) The curriculum that my daughter is following is 100% tailored to her.... there is no set music book that she is working her way through. Her practice time usually involves her making recordings of new pieces she is trying to create, as well as working on playing songs she likes. He is positive and builds her up during lessons, while also managing to be honest with her when she hasn't lived up to expectations (not so much about her skills, but about her following through on practice time commitments.)

Jeff's personality is great - easy for both parent and daughter to get along. I listen to my daughter during the lesson and she is engaged, which is the #1 goal. From my end, Jeff is priced appropriately for an in-home teacher, he is flexible when scheduling issues arise, and he communicates with me very well (usually texting for simple issues, and phone calls for more in-depth talks.)

Note: if your goal is a straightforward, traditional "skill and drill" teacher - where your child will learn the scales but be bored and hate piano - then Jeff is NOT your teacher. If your goal is to have your child engaged and enjoying the process of learning, and perhaps fall in love with music/piano along the way, and progress at his/her own pace, then you should definitely give Jeff a try!

Jeff is the fifth piano teacher my daughter has had in the past three years and he is by far the best, as measured by my daughter's engagement and enjoyment. We have had a variety of different styles (including skill & drill, rock n' roll, traditional, etc) and we finally found the right fit for my daughter. Last year she had a traditional teacher -- she learned a lot, she progressed a lot, and she hated every minute of it....begging me not to make her continue. This year with Jeff, the process is entirely different, the lessons and practice time is entirely different, the pace is entirely different (not quicker or slower....just different) and the love of music has returned to my daughter!

Will she become a professional piano player? I have no idea. Does she run to the door when Jeff arrives (versus hide in her closet which she did last year)? Yes, she does. For us, that is success and that is directly tied to Jeff being a great teacher.

I highly recommend him."

"Ryan is so great with my 6 yr old son. He is very patient with him, and even though we are having our son learn piano for now, his ultimate goal is to learn the guitar. With Ryan knowing this about our son, he also allows him to strum the guitar every so often so that it reminds him how his piano lessons will ultimately pay off in the end. Ryan is super great with kids! I highly recommend him to anyone."

"My daughters started taking lessons with Kristy in 2016 when their first teacher moved, and she was excellent at helping each pick up where they left off and developing them both into talented young pianists. During their time with Kristy, my daughters were 10 to 13 and 8 to 11, respectively. Each started playing with their former teacher at six years old. Kristy has been the perfect teacher for both, helping them to grow as musicians while making it fun through occasional games and challenges. At recitals, we got to see first-hand how great she is with children who are just starting out, as well as with the more-developed, older children who have been playing longer. She has been such a wonderful teacher for our daughters and we are sad to see her go."

The Ins and Outs of Cadences for Piano Players

What are piano cadences, and how are they used? Learn the ins and outs in this guest post by Manassas, VA teacher Carol K...   When I first decided to tackle the word “cadence,” I thought to myself – “What exactly do I think of when I hear that word?” For me, the word implies an ending, or rhythmic inflection of sound, like the modulation of the voice in reading or speaking. This article will examine, in greater detail, what a cadence means to musicians, the types of caden …
