I teach the basics: scales, sight reading, and note recognition. It all ties into theory, so the student will be getting a two for one. Learning piano is how many people begin to appreciate their love for music.

"Ronald Chaz Barcenilla was an employee at the Johannes School of Music (1997-2011) and an independent contractor (2012 - current) . He has been the music education consultant and coordinator to develop a music and language curriculum primarily for college entrance matriculation. He also teaches Piano Performance, Vocal Technique, Composition, and Music Theory. There has been nothing but positive remarks and praises from both parents and students. His passion and dedication for teaching children, teens, and young adults (oh there were 3 senor citizens at 78, 82, and 95 year of age also!) is reflected in the top- quality recitals and concerts that have been a half-yearly and yearly goal for his students, as well as the examination reports achieved in the majority of cases in the Distinction range. He has also produced very fine musicians, most have become music graduates and a few are well known in the industry. It's deceiving because he does not at all look his age considering all the achievements he has received. I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending the talents of this great teacher and mentor. He is also fluent in Spanish, Italian, German, French as I have heard him many times teach in these languages. I cannot download a pic from this computer but feel free to call the school at (424) 204.5433 for any further query about him."

"I am an adult student -- one who came to Howard with a fair amount of personal mishegas. In short, I had poor training as a child -- I'm surprisingly good at reading notes on the page, but I never learned a scale, have little-to-no comfort with theory, and yet somehow became a competent classical player. A fraud!! As an adult, I don't want to play classical anymore, I want to play and/or accompany myself on jazz, pop, or rock tunes, and conquer any lead sheet with style and aplomb!! As a professional contractor, I have booked world-class musicians for 30 years, and expect (and presume) excellence from everyone -- including myself. My problem is: I have a very sophisticated ear and no chops! All that an important introduction to the way Howard has made me feel as a student: "SAFE" and like I can do it, and like there is NO REASON at all for me to feel ashamed. I adore Howard because he is BRILLIANT, and has a METHOD and a PHILOSOPHY and a deep understanding (and acceptance) of human foibles, especially as they relate to learning music. He has developed a method that is INGENIUS -- it works!!! He is incredibly organized within that method, and makes it seem "easy" to achieve your goals (and btw, some of those goals may very little to do with music, yet it's all intertwined!) He has quirks, but I LOVE them, and they TOTALLY work for me! I've been a student for less than a year, and have already accomplished things I never thought possible in such a short amount of time. Honestly, I could get emotional when thinking about how Howard EMPOWERS a student, especially such a crippled one like me. I just love him!"

"Our son began piano lessons with Ryan at the beginning of second grade. In less than one year he has gone from no experience, to being able to play 2-handed while reading music. Quite a leap. Ryan is patient, works at the child's speed, and is very relatable with school aged students."

"Laura's been absolutely great with our children (now 10 and 11). She tailors her teaching style to each one, interacting with them at their level, engaging them, and pushing their music forward -- both their practical skills and their understanding of music itself -- in a manner that seems fun and personal. One of my children just asked what I was doing, and when told and asked if he had anything to say about Laura he replied:
"She is very nice and she is funny and she is a very good teacher""

"Glynis is the best teacher! As an adult student, I have unhappy memories of childhood instructors with punishing demeanors, who would give you a hard time with every mistake. Glynis is the most supportive, encouraging teacher I've ever had. I especially appreciate her rigorous background (Master's Degrees in music, a lifetime of piano and music theory) and her familiarity with the pieces I'm interested in learning (Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, Bach, Chopin). She has introduced pieces to me that I hadn't heard before, that I now love to play. It's so nice to be able to sit at the piano and play something that actually sounds like an adult playing!

Glynis is very adept at tailoring her teaching methods to what I need on that particular day. Sometimes I haven't had a chance to practice as much as I'd like, and she is very patient, helping me based on where I am in that moment. When I do have the time to work more diligently on a piece, she listens thoughtfully, praising the good parts and offering gentle suggestions on how I could improve. She sometimes will paint visual pictures for me of how the music should sound ("make it sound like children running through a meadow"), which is silly but also useful! Glynis knows how to bring out the best in my playing, and shows genuine enthusiasm when I master something hard. My playing has dramatically improved over the past few months, and I've really enjoyed spending time with Glynis at the piano.

I'd recommend Glynis to any adult looking to improve their piano skills. She is absolutely fantastic."
