About Bulent G.

View Full Profile

I studied piano as part of my operatic training, and taught it as a faculty member at the Quincy Point Music Academy and A Street Music in Quincy. I now teach in my private studio, using the comprehensive Faber curriculum, which takes a beginner all the way to the early-advanced level.

About Bulent
"When you think of opera, the word modern doesn't usually follow. Bulent G... is changing the way we think about this centuries-old art form. G. is anything but a stereotypical opera singer... He isn't merely an opera singer, but a well-rounded musician. He has performed Broadway pieces, jazz solos, spirituals, and even contemporary pop songs, which he says inform his interpretation of even the most classical roles in opera. This approach to opera may be what draws crowds who aren't as familiar with the genre... This opera singer, who says his favorite music ranges from that of the heavy metal 80s band Cacophony to jazz pianist Chick Corea, shows that opera singers may not be what you think, and his audiences are surprisingly diverse as well..."

- Chelsea Whyte, The Somerville News

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Described by The
Times Herald-Record, New York, as a "firm bass- baritone", and by The Boston Musical Intelligencer as "outstanding dramatically and musically", Bulent G. is a multi-instrumentalist singer and instructor with 20 years of teaching experience. He taught voice at The Boston Conservatory Summer Choral Institute; voice, piano and drums at Quincy Point Music Academy and A Street Music in Quincy. He maintains his private music studio in Arlington.
Highlights in recent years include the Turkish language premier of the role of Sultan in the Ukranian opera Cossack Beyond The Danube with The Commonwealth Lyric Theater; the roles of The Master and Yefim in the US-premiere of the opera Desire To Sleep by Moshe Shulman with The Juventas New Music Ensemble; the narrator in the English language world-premiere of Expérience by Phivos-Angelos Kollias with The Juventas New Music Ensemble; the world-premieres of Missa Patri Pio by Leonardo Ciampa; the role of Jewish Man in the world-premiere of the opera The Prioress's Tale by Delvyn Case ; The Omaggio al Bel Canto Best Interpretation Award at The Stelle dell'Anno Nuovo Festival in Boston (organized for the members of The Boston Opera Collaborative by The Dante Alighieri Society Italian Cultural Center of Massachusetts and The Consulate General of Italy); official recognitions by The Massachusetts State Senate and Thomas Menino; a feature program on CCTV; and a performance at the historic USS Salem in the inaugural maritime festival of Quincy, Massachusetts, where he sang the solos of Emile de Becque from the musical South Pacific by Rodgers & Hammerstein.
VOICE / SINGING / SPEECH STUDIO INFO
Greetings,
I teach using a natural, easy-to-understand, experience-based holistic and scientific method. The aim is to freely express the natural and style-free voice, which can be consciously applied to any musical style with ease, energized and flowing breath, good technique, resonance, projection, diction, range and poise.
My students come from diverse backgrounds such as classical, opera, musical theater, jazz, pop, R&B, bluegrass, country, rock, heavy metal and public speaking.
No previous singing experience is necessary. Students of all ages and backgrounds from beginner to professional are welcome.
I studied with Bulent for about eight months and only stopped because I moved across the country. This is the first formal voice training I have had. I was immediately impressed by Bulent’s deep knowledge and passion for music. My first class was quite unique, in that he spent a lot of time going over the anatomy of all the organs that are used when one is singing. I found that foundation very useful when working on different aspects of my voice. The classes consist of two parts — fundamental training and repertoire building. Bulent observes the student and gives instruction based on performance. He will also assign exercises for the student to do while at home; these are important because they are helping to train the relevant muscles. Bulent’s instructions are very detailed and personalized, and most importantly they come from a place of love; it is rare to see a teacher so in love with both the field of music as well as the people he encounters. This love provided an exceptional setting for being able to focus on learning the truths of music, without fear of judgement or ridicule. Not only did I improve my vocal abilities while training with Bulent, my awareness as a singer also grew tremendously. That awareness allows me to help myself improve while I practice on my own.
“I studied with Bulent for 3 months this past summer. Bulent is a fantastic teacher and every single lesson I noticed a prominent increase in my vocal talents, including my range and my breathing. He helped me do exactly what I wanted with my voice and was able to emphasize how I should be practicing to work on certain parts of my voice. He was always very effective and excited about teaching and I had a lot of fun learning from him. I was really grateful to have Bulent as a teacher and if I had the chance I would learn from him again!”
About Bil
I am one of those individuals for whom teaching is just something that I have to do. I started giving music lessons sometime in the 80's and have loved working with all levels of skill and experience. My students say that I am patient, adaptive and encouraging, committed to making music fun.
I have a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles, including pop, rock, gospel, traditional hymnody, jazz, and R&B. Although I love and study classical music, it is not something I teach at this point.
In addition to private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. Bil Mooney-McCoy is a life-long Boston resident who has been playing music all his life. Having served as a church musician for more
than 30 years, I am currently the Director of Worship for the chapel at Gordon College, a small Christian school north of Boston. I'm often involved in city-wide music events in Boston’s faith-based community and in demand as a featured musician for church services, parties, concerts and other events.
I hold a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles. In addition to private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. My passions include morning coffee, finding new guitar chords, creating killer PowerPoint presentations, and trying to figure out how to use my smart phone.
*** Lesson Details ***
My priority as a teacher is to make the learning process fun, life-giving, and productive. I teach with patience and humor, at a challenging but not frustrating pace.
Some quotes from my students:
"I absolutely love learning from Bil! I've watched my playing and the playing of others at church vastly improve as a result of his training."
"[Bil] is filled with a large amount of knowledge, so while sitting under him you not only learn about how to play but you learn about music history and theory. Beyond being a good teacher he is genuine and friendly and cares about others."
"I have really enjoyed working with Bil. His patience and wealth of knowledge has helped me come out of my musical shell and has encouraged me to discover my musical voice."
"Bil makes learning theory fun! His deep understanding of music is complemented by his contagious enthusiasm."
"Bil has taken me to a different level. I went from tab and basic guitar chords, to building jazz chords and a far greater understanding of music theory."
There are at least two ways that might set me apart from other teachers.
Firstly, I have honed and developed "people skills". I am an ordained minister and have held positions where I was formally and informally in a mentoring/pastoring role. I bring that sensitivity to my music lessons, understanding that personal and emotional issues can be triggered by the engagement with the music and skills being worked on.
Secondly, I've had a remarkable broad base of experience. My coursework has exposed me to a wide breadth of ideas and tools; my work life has been long and varied; I have had extensive experience in many different cultural contexts, both musically and otherwise; and I work well with many age groups and skill levels.
Regarding my teaching approach:
For beginners, I have a fairly consistent set of topics and skill sets to cover. Generally, in a few months, piano students (particularly those in middle school through adulthood) should know how to play major, minor and seventh chords, how to read simple chord charts and some very basic accompanying skills. Guitar students should know a dozen open chords and have been introduced to barre chords, and to have learned several styles of finger picking as well as strumming. Bass students should know how to find notes on the board and will have begun to learn how to fill out a song with an expressive but non-obtrusive bass line.
For intermediate students, the pace, direction and focus on lessons depends upon the goals and passions of the student along with the amount of time he or she has to practice. My goals for students at this level and beyond is to learn how to learn. I will use outstanding recorded examples of particular skills or stylistic idioms to help my students understand and master each new concept. I often will check in with my student to make sure that we are on track with what they are hoping for.
For advanced students, we will generally target very specific objectives. I also try to add elements of theory, history, culture, and even life lessons to apply to the topics we address. Because of my background in pastoral ministry, I can serve as a mentor addressing the emotional and relational issues of playing music as well as its technical aspects.
*** Studio Equipment ***
upstairs music room: fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, amps, drum set, seating for parents
*** Travel Equipment ***
if for guitar or bass, that instrument; I expect piano students to have an available keyboard and for other students to have their own instrument(s).
*** Specialties ***
strong in jazz, rock, pop, gospel, sacred, R&B.
Experienced piano teacher of 14 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of piano & theory skills. I specialize in young beginners, typically use Bastien or Faber lesson books.
About Christine
I absolutely love music and my goal is to help my students learn to love and appreciate music as well. I am a graduate of Umass Lowell's Music Education program. I began playing at the age of 6 and haven't been able to stop. I've taught private piano for the last 16 years as well as group lessons. Most of my experience is with beginning students, but I teach all levels. My experiences in my past private lessons as well as in the teaching program at Umass have helped me to understand my students and how to help them reach their goals.
*** Lesson Details ***
I work with my students to help them set and achieve their goals. Each lesson is designed and prepped to meet each student's individual needs. I believe in integrating theory, history, ear training, and technique into each lesson to develop musicianship and an overall knowl
edge of the subject rather than just learning to play. I have high expectations for my students, yet I am patient and understanding. At times lessons may be challenging, but they will also be fun!
*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the students to have a keyboard/piano appropriate to their level of playing for us to have our lesson on. I will provide any books or supplementary material that may be needed. Any books purchased specifically for that student will need to be reimbursed.
*** Specialties ***
Teaching young beginners and elementary age children.
Traditional piano lessons, all styles, complex music education
About Anastasia
After Anastasia’s Carnegie Hall Debut in 2006, the New York Concert Review wrote: "For a critic, hearing a new pianist with a truly warm, luscious tone is like breathing in the scent of jasmine blooming - a pleasure to be recalled again and again - and so I'm happy to report that from the first note she touched at her Weill Hall recital, Anastasia S. was a genuine pleasure to listen to. Every piece, every measure, every note - no matter how complex the texture, no matter how many strands of melody and accompaniment - was wrapped in a halo of golden tone..."
Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Anastasia S. gave her first solo recital at the age of eleven. Ms. S. is a graduate of the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg, Germany, and holds a Master’s and a Doctorate degrees from The Hartt School at the University of Hartford.
In 2003 Anastasia received
First Prize in the 14th International Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Rome, Italy, and was awarded a Special Prize. In year 2006 Ms. S. won the Puigcerda International Piano Competition in Spain. In the same year she recorded the complete works for piano and orchestra by Balakirev with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra for NAXOS records. In 2008 Ms. S. received the “Outstanding Award”, which granted her a return engagement to give a second solo recital at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2010 Anastasia was awarded a Special Prize for the best interpretation of French composition at the International Piano Competition “Parnassos” in Mexico. Her solo recital in 2008 at the Myra Hess Concert Series in Chicago was broadcast live on WFMT Radio, in Internet, and on the TV-Station “Channel 25“; Anastasia was invited to play there again in 2011. Her career continues with numerous appearances as a soloist both in concertos with orchestra, in solo recitals, and in chamber music concerts in Ukraine, Germany, Macedonia, Italy, Switzerland, France, Russia, USA, and Japan. Anastasia’s recent engagements included a performance at the Bolshoi Hall of Moscow Conservatory as well as solo appearances with orchestras in the United States and Germany featuring concerti by Prokofieff, Mozart, Grieg, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky. In 2014 her new CD "Music of Russian-Jewish composers for oboe and piano" was released. Currently, Anastasia is working on her two new solo CD's for Centaur Records.
In 2013, Anastasia was granted the Extraordinary Abilities in the Arts permanent US residence, as one of a small percentage of those who have risen to the top in their field of endeavor. Anastasia served as an Adjunct Faculty in Piano and Chamber Music at the Hartt School, and is currently on faculty of the New England Conservatory in Boston.
As an adult beginner, I chose Anastasia for more personalized instruction, especially in technique, after learning the basics through community center group lessons. I have not continued only because another equally well-qualified instructor who lives close by, within walking distance, has become available. I am very pleased with the lessons and pointers that I have received. Anastasia is professional, encouraging, and friendly. An especially helpful part of her instruction is the set of comments and suggestions that she writes down to guide practice between lessons. If the neighbor instructor does not work out, I’ll be back.
As a Music Ed. degree student at the Berklee College of Music I had 3 years (6 semesters) of keyboard training and studies in technique, sight-reading, rhythm and various styles of performance. I have been teaching piano to players of all levels since 1986.
About Bob
Hi, Bob here...... very much looking forward to meeting you! I've been teaching music since 1980 (Guitar, Bass, Piano and Voice) and I love helping my students play well! Of course we throw jamming and/or composing music into the mix when desired and appropriate. Many of my students perform, and record their music.
I earned my degrees from the Berklee College of Music for Performance and Music Ed. in 1980. I founded my School of Music in 1983, which served as a prep school for Berklee and other schools. We offered private instruction, courses, ensembles and recording courses and producing artists and band's CD's. Many of my former students have become major stars and celebs in music.
I'm a warm, funny, passionate person. I love to teach and my teaching style is a patient, step by step, and custom tailored approach for your individu
al needs and goals. Always an emphasis on FUN! My philosophy as a teacher is to give you the tools and help you develop skills with them so that you can learn and grow musically on your own! I look forward to helping you reach and achieve all your goals!
My teaching method focuses mainly on development of technique, interpretation and sound. I encourage my students to develop the ability to think and come up with their own musical ideas since I believe that spoon feeding everything hinders the growth of artistic sense. For more advanced students, I generally look at the music from their perspective and help them bring the most out of what they want their playing to represent.
About Nipun
I'm a student from India currently pursuing a Master's degree in Piano Performance at Longy School of Music of Bard College.
Although I've spent most of my time up until now studying music, I have also had the opportunity to teach students of different ages. If there's one thing that I've learnt from my experiences so far, it is that there's no definite maximum age to start learning piano at. The only requirements for one to be able to learn to play any instrument are patience and the will to learn and work hard.
I focus mainly on helping students develop a healthy, efficient technique and good interpretative skills.
