About Nicole
As a voice teacher and voice coach I strive to help the student get to where they want to be vocally. For me singing is something that brings me joy and I hope to be able to share that with you.

It took me a while to realize how much music and singing means to me. While studying something entirely different at the University of Maryland, I began studying voice and realized that it was something that I had a gift for. I fell in love with singing art songs, jazz and opera arias. And while studying at the University of Maryland, I had the opportunity to work as a voice teacher/ section leader with the women's section of a choir, numerous opportunities to work as a soloist and in a few jazz clubs. I was also involved in dance performances and acted as a dance tutor.

Later, when I was invited to sing in Denver I had the opportunity
to sing in Little Shop of Horrors and to sing with a women's choir. While studying at the University of Colorado Boulder I began to come into my own and started to let my large sound free. (Which for me was a process. Getting your voice where you want it and to where it is capable is work. But, it is fun work and you're always happy when you have these great moments where you get to where you were hoping you could and that your teacher said you would go at some point.) It was there, at CU Boulder that I got the opportunity to start singing in operas. While in Boulder I sang in The Magic Flute, Sarah McKinnon and as a soloist or recitalist.

Also, while there I worked as an actress in a theater company called the Interactive Theater Project for three years. I thought that by getting involved in that that I would be able to act more effectively while singing. It was fun just doing something where you're just working with the spoken word. I had a wonderful time with them and learned a lot about character work and what it takes to connect to the words in an effective way.

In the past few years, I have been a soloist and recitalist in the Washington,DC area and has sang opera in Pennsylvania with Center Stage Opera. Last year, I sang with Center Stage Opera in the role of Bertha. I had the opportunity to sing and to act at the Kennedy Center a few years ago. Also during that time, I
sang in Aleko, the Die Zauberflöte as the Queen of the Night, Serena in Porgy and Bess, and
sang in Ragtime and sang the role of the Wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast.

I am currently working as a soloist, a children's choir director, a chorus member and preparing for a recital and auditions in October. I look forward to what the rest of the year will bring.

*** Lesson Details ***
If you're a beginner, I will help you to understand what you need to get through the vocal line with breath and intonation. We will begin by doing vocal exercises and learn a lot about breathing for singing. I want to help you to make more beautiful tones. I will also slowly begin teaching you how to read sheet music and to help you be a more effective listener when it comes to music. I can also help you to become a better communicator as a singer.

For acting, I will help you to learn how to develop characters and bring the writer's words to life. We will begin by seeing what sort of subjects or genres interest you and what you are doing with those words now, and how you can delve deeper into making the world of the characters something more flushed out.

Outside of teaching percussion and musical performances I have worked in special education for over 15 years.

My life of music started knee high at the age of 4 playing drums and piano. At the age of 15 I gave my first musical performance, from that stage on I knew my talent had found a home.

In the 11th grade I toured with a local funk group in Washington DC through 26 cities learning music and the life of travel at an early age. During my last high school and college years I performed extensively playing classical, jazz, rock, funk, go-go, gospel, marching band, R&B, and with local rap artist.

Recording credits and highlights include work with Def Jam artist Steady Eddy, recording go-go Mario with Double Agent Rock, and recordings with Little Benny and the Masters.

My other musical passion is teaching. Throughout my col
lege years and beyond I served as a percussion instructor and assistant band director at Morgan State University. As part of the Morgan State University Magnificent Marching Machine I served as a instructional leader in music and performance mentor for the team. I taught part time as a percussion instructor at Milford Mill High School giving individual lessons for over 10 years.

Musical inspiration is an important element to the refinement of my craft. A few personal musical influences are Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Neil Peart (Rush), Dennis Chambers, (Santana), George Gray (Roberta Flack), Ricky Wellman (Miles Davis), Quinton Mack-Davis (Rare Essence) and Michael Bland (Prince).

Within the first three months of lessons student will gain a strong foundation of sight reading and basic drum techniques in both rudiment studies and playing the drum set. My style of teaching music consist of breaking each skill down into chunks and allowing students to learn using their individual learning styles. I utilize rewards for perfect practice and each lesson contains a safe, fun learning atmosphere with students exhibiting in their best behavior.

Our son has never played in a marching band before but is interested in playing in the marching band when he attends college in July so we were specifically looking for an instructor who had marching band experience to teach our son since he's never participated in the marching band in high school. We saw Mr. Stewart's profile and decided to have him work with our son. That was the BEST decision that we could have ever made. We have been nothing but impressed with Mr. Stewart. He definitely has the gift of teaching and he is very patient, knowledgeable, and he challenges our son to get better by giving him homework after each session. Our son absolutely LOVES Mr. Stewart and he is always excited for each lesson and to practice what Mr. Stewart has taught him. Our son went from not playing in the marching band at all in high school to making his college band and receiving a scholarship all thanks to Mr. Stewart. We are very grateful for his outstanding teaching and we would definitely recommend Mr. Stewart 100%.

You can play what you can hear. I work on developing the student's mental concept of how a particular piece of music might sound. This solid musical thinking translates into a reliable technique. Technique should come naturally and should not be overly thought, but I will explain what seems to work for me and analyze the student's playing.

Beginning students start with a method such as the well-known 'Piano Adventures'. Lessons should include some study of theory. More advanced students will work on progressively more demanding literature.

This is a simple, but crucial difference that is apparent in her approach. The very nature of secondary issues are that they are simply the extensions of the primary issues and therefore primary issues should really become the focus and starting point of the technical work.

It is from Christine’s experience and observation that she has concluded that secondary issues will always be dysfunctional (regardless of time and effort put into correcting them) as long as the primary issues have not been resolved. Oftentimes secondary issues will significantly self-correct on their own or can be approached reasonably once the primary source has been corrected.

This can only happen if the teacher knows this and is aware on how to approach the correct order in which to work and to address issues.

Making sense of primary versus secondary issues is absolutely fundamental to legitimately correcting problems successfully. Unfortunately it is often that the student is ultimately left to the enormous task of discovering this on their own, if ever and if they are lucky after years of study because the teacher is often focused on surface level issues, which are always easy to hear.

This is because most professionals are not versed in hearing such nuanced differences, nor capable to offer to work in such a refined manner.

The voice requires an execution of many things that must function together properly in order for it to work. Considering this makes it is easy to understand why the voice is viewed as the most complicated instrument to diagnose and teach. Therefore, it is absolutely important to invest in teachers who greatly have a handle on the voice and how to go about making sense of it.

She also specializes in teaching students process and development through highly mindful practices. She believes that in order for the voice to function optimally, the body, mind and emotional state of the singer must all be receptive and responsive in a positive way. This is because they are all inherently interconnected.

Christine teaches in a mindful manner to help students become more observant and aware of their own approach. By doing so we can realistically create the opportunity to arrive to better choices.

Christine’s extensive experience and knowledge in various styles and specialties in vocal intonation, along with her continuous education (over twenty years) and dedication to the authentic Italian traditions of bel canto and verismo opera has allowed for her to develop an approach that can extended into all legitimate styles of singing. Her personal approach to the voice is beyond comparison, nor can it be matched.

She has a phenomenal ear and can make rapid and highly accurate assessments of technical issues in a very brief sitting. Christine is exceptional at explaining vocal pedagogy and directing students on how to make corrections for themselves.

Christine is a dramatic soprano and is very confident and experienced with large instruments (that are more difficult to train for various reasons and require more specialized training). Having an extremely rare and large voice herself has given her invaluable insight toward fully understanding all other voice types and the discipline necessary to achieve efficient technique.

Many teachers can be limited in their view and teach "their technique" as opposed to helping the student develop their own technique and what works best for them. Christine has a great talent for figuring out what a students needs to do in their approach in order to achieve the results and keep the lessons progressive.

Developing proficient technique in a complete and effective way leads toward discovering the full capacity and beauty of our instrument without compromise. We need to find our voice to find ourselves as artist.

Her methods in vocal intonation translate directly and indirectly into all styles of legitimate singing, which she coaches many varying styles and will direct student toward appropriate repertoire. Students will learn the full potential of their instrument under her guidance. It is her belief that technique should always lead toward one sounding natural, no matter the style and that one fully learns their instrument’s capability to access endless artistic choices as a performer.

What you can expect to learn:

Vocal pedagogy and how the voice functions properly; how to effectively think about your voice to get the body to cooperate (aurally, physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.);

Integrating the body to fully support the voice Rebounding the body, which is at the core of support, but often times very apparently neglected because most trained singers/teachers from even the highest institutions do not understand how it works or do it effectively themselves. It is sadly becoming a lost art. This is the most advanced concept of singing and yet is absolutely necessary to master in order to access genuine support. Christine clearly demonstrates and explains how this concept functions and her refinement of it is by far not common knowledge.

Other concepts include sustaining an open throat, internal space for optimal resonances, legitimate dynamics directed from the body and compressed air, anchoring the body to maintain the larynx low;

Various placement techniques, air that can rebound using breath direction, centering the voice/cut internally by aligning the horizontal (mask) and vertical planes (chest, back of head, top of head and spine) support and placement that function together, developing a mixed middle sound that passes easily into low and high registers and broadens range; articulation that is aligned with vertical planes and naturally hooks up chest and top of head (releases in head) without forcing or placing, tongue, jaw and neck release, body posture that is conducive for support and keeps the body open and functional;

Various artistic and performance techniques, musical interpretation appropriate to context, time period and style, aligning the voice and body/acting to come across accurately in our portrayals and the process behind this, memorization techniques, execution of timing for expressive reasons and ways to think about timing that doesn’t conflict with the natural structure of a song, but allows for flexibility in phrasing, phrasal development and song development.

Piano:
Christine is also a highly sought out piano instructor for her ability to establish an exceptional foundation in beginning piano students and those who wish to continue their studies and build upon the fundamentals. She specializes in reading skills and excellent technique.

It is her belief that having a solid foundation sets the tone for determining if a student will continue with their studies and therefore this is the most vital part of a student's development and future progress.

She teaches Russian technique, which allows for flexibility, strength and tonal beauty of musical lines. This technique can be applied to all styles of playing piano such as pop, jazz and is not limited to just the classical repertoire.

My students enjoy learning to read sheet music, play piano by ear, and to compose original music. $15/student for 2-/3-child lessons. $30 for single student lessons. 3-child lessons last 45 minutes. All others last 30 minutes.

I offer individual and discounted group piano lessons (to help parents afford lessons for 2 or three student lessons.) In my lessons students learn to play by ear, read music, compose original music, and even to improvise. I try to keep things fun, and children's lessons involve a lot of moving and interactive computer/tablet activities as well. These resources and activities are available for adult or teen lessons as well, but not required.

Learning piano or any instrument takes patience and is rewarding to see progress. I give the student time to learn and process their songs. I welcome questions and give professional feedback. I think of myself of more of a music coach to provide support through your musical journey.

I started playing the piano when I was about 8 years old living in Salt Lake City Utah. My family would be watching TV or doing something else and I would go upstairs and play the piano instead. I practiced until I got to the level to play Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata original composition. I still love to play that one. I also loved to play a piece my grandfather gave me called Cordoba, by Isaac Albeniz.

I have played bass and keyboards in an original band giving a good knowledge of musical body language. From there I went on to teaching private and group lessons at Pianos n' Pianos studios. I use a few different method books. When deciding which one to use during a lesson, I assess the age of the student and what they can absorb. I started supplementing their lessons by using a write-it-out method, where students can take a few lin
es from a song they like and combine it with other songs. That way they can “compose” and be more invested in the music we are playing.

If you play a wrong note, I tell my students to just keep going and to not lose concentration. Wrong notes happen sometimes. If you make a wrong note in a performance, you can’t stop, you just have to roll with it and keep going. I also encourage singing with the piano that helps learns pitches and notes!

When teaching young children, I make sure to give them variety and plan lessons only about 30 minutes long. For adult learner, it is very good to play piano to keep the mind active and sharp. So really any age, 6 and up, is a good age!

Claudie T. Morrisey (better known as Cj amongst his musical cohorts) has a unique way of analogizing music theory, chords, and scales for the specific needs of each student. Students grasp concepts with Cj in a way like none other. After working with Cj, students are able to showcase their skills in both larger and intimate sized recitals alike.

Cj has education in music theory and 16 years of experience in Classical and Jazz Piano including composing an original piece for the Fayetteville State Symphonic Band. He has worked as the pianist for the Fayetteville Jazz orchestra and as an accompanist for Fayetteville State University and various high schools in North Carolina.

Cj has been recognized for his unique style in publications including the Fayetteville Observer.

Hi everyone!

It is a pleasure for me to teach music. I have been teaching piano and cello for more than ten years. All my students no matter which level of playing are having a good quality time in the lesson. Through my lesson, student learns music from different genres such as music theory,music history, ear training and music appreciation. Because of that, my student always tends to learn quicker than they expected.
Besides teaching, I also perform. My philosophy in music learning is that, it is never easy to learn an instrument. Therefore, learning in a creative atmosphere and giving out precise guidance is not only good for students, but also good for me. By exploring music together each week, it will be a fun and engaging experience for both of us towards music learning.

I am a classically trained pianist and piano/ cello teacher. By more than ten years of teaching experience, learning with me is going to be engaging and enchanting. I chose the right method books and design the lesson plan/ practice plan according to your needs. Through my lesson, you are not only learning music but also having a great time learning.

I held a Master degree in piano performance from Manhattan School of Music, , as well as a bachelor degree in piano performance from Taipei National University of the arts. By 27 years of indulging in music, I have to say, it is such a fulfilling journey!

Alice was very kind and knowledgeable! She was also very patient with our annoying dog who wouldn't leave her alone! I'm looking forward to more lessons!

My experience with Mrs. Alice has been nothing but pleasant, not only is she caring, kind, and considerate, she's extremely talented in what she does. I have had the honor of being her student for nearly 5 years and am glad to say that if you're a student of Mrs. Alice then you are in good hands.

Ms. Alice is one of the most memorable piano teachers I've taken lessons with. I would always look forward to piano lessons because she would make them fun yet still be able to move forward in songs and techniques. Whenever Ms. Alice plays a section of a song for demonstration, I could feel the emotion behind her playing and I think that plays a role in her being an excellent piano teacher.
I enjoyed my lessons with Ms. Alice very much and I strongly believe that anyone who takes lessons with her will enjoy them as well.
