I have been playing piano for 30 years, and teaching it for nearly 10 years. I have experience teaching all ages, as young as 3 years old. You will learn all of the skills, techniques, and theory required to become a great piano player in any genre!

About Ian
A lifelong musician and songwriter, Ian S. has extensive experience teaching guitar and piano to students age 3 and up both as a private music instructor and as a staff music instructor at the Institute of Music for Children. With 28 years of experience on the guitar and 32 years on piano, Ian has studied and performed with several award-winning music artists, and has written, recorded, and produced over one hundred songs. He plays and teaches a variety of styles on both the guitar and the piano, from classical to jazz to rock. Ian is patient, friendly, and loves sharing the gift of music.

Ian was the guitarist in the Princeton University Jazz Ensemble for 3 seasons, was selected from a nationwide pool of musicians to perform at a special music event at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and was the recipient of the New Jersey Gove
rnor's Award in Arts Education for the category of Instrumental Music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very laid back and friendly, and I want you or your child to be as comfortable as possible during our lessons. You or your child will develop confidence and musical intelligence. I will make your lessons fun, enjoyable, and effective. Boredom is not an option! Music is fun... let's keep it that way.

The teaching methods I use will be custom-tailored to your individual needs, personality and specific musical goals. If it's guitar or piano you want to learn, I want to get you playing exactly what you want to be playing as soon as possible. That's what you're here for, and that's what I'm here for. I will make it happen. If it's songwriting that you want to learn, I will help you access that place inside of you that is dying to express itself creatively, and will teach you techniques to harness that energy and translate it successfully into musical expression.

You can expect to learn all the basics of music theory, proper playing techniques, improvisation and spontaneous musical expression, and I will help you develop your "ear" so you can figure out songs you like just by listening to them. This is all about you and your goals, and I want you to achieve them in a fun and engaging way.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room: Upright piano, guitars, amps, keyboard, percussion

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in pop, rock, classical, jazz, blues, folk, fingerstyle (guitar), etc. I also teach improvisation and songwriting, and try to develop the student's ear for figuring out songs they like on their own.

I played piano for Brigham Young University's Dance Department for 7 years - sight reading or playing without any music for Ballet and Modern Dance classes. I think sight reading is one of the best piano skills to have because you can play whatever you want in a fraction of the time. So my goal is to get students there. Most people aren't looking to become concert pianists, and my goal isn't that. It's to help them play well enough to really enjoy it and be very satisfied with their progress.

About Richard
My goal is to help students ENJOY the piano by finding ways to make it easier and doable. I have a very useful approach in helping students become self sufficient to sight read very well, to see patterns, understand music theory to either help them play well, or to even create their own music(I compose a lot of great music as well)

I couldn't sight read very well until I was 16, but I had a great sight reading teacher that showed me how to develop it, and now I can say that I'm one of the best sight readers out there that I know. I was a ballet pianist at Brigham Young University for several years where all I did was sightread binders full of ballet/classical music. I play for choirs, church congregations, jazz bands, or musical jam sessions all the time, and I couldn't do that at all if I didn't learn how to sight read well.
I would love to help you learn the piano, and I will do my best to make learning as effective as possible. I especially enjoy teaching those who quit and would like to try again, because I know what that is like.

Concerning my musical background, I've played, arranged, and composed piano for choirs, bands, jazz combos, singers. I've been in bands all my life, and have composed for jazz bands, choirs, and orchestras at BYU and in Eastern Europe. I also play about 10 different instruments. I won two Student Emmys in Hollywood for my compositions to BYU's animations in 2010 & 2014.

I am currently writing music for video games.

I am an adult learner and have just finished my first five piano lessons with Richard and have already booked up five more! I have been working through the excellent Piano Pronto series with him, but Richard has also been happy to set me practice pieces from other books of my choosing and has been very adept at helping me, even with pieces that are unfamiliar to him.

Richard is also a teacher on Piano Maestro, an iPad application where you can, among other things, play the pieces from Piano Pronto (and Alfred's). This has been a great way to practice, and would be especially good for children (as Richard gets a weekly progress report, including time played).

Richard is very flexible and teaches each lesson at my pace - so, the more I practice, the more I can progress! He is patient and encouraging and clearly wants me to enjoy each lesson - and I do! I can't wait to begin my next block of lessons!

Piano takes a great deal of hard work to master, but it's the most addictive and most versatile instrument in the world. With me, you'll learn all kinds of styles including Rock and Roll, Classical, Jazz, Musical Theater and more. Along with the basics of the piano, we'll study music theory and composition and how to arrange songs you know and love.

About Joseph
I am first and forever a musician and I want to inspire the love of learning and playing music within all those I encounter. I have a degree in Musical Theatre from Western Carolina University, and I've been diligently studying music since I was a child. From me, you will learn multiple styles and work with both written music and music played by ear. I expect a great deal from my students and I hope they expect the same from me.

If music be the food of love, PLAY ON!

I teach all skill levels and styles. Every lesson I teach is customized to the individual student and their musical interests. I do not believe in simply teaching people how to play songs; I believe in teaching people how the songs they love are constructed, and how they can incorporate the elements of a piece of music that they like into their personal musical style so they can apply them to everything they play in the future. I use music as a lens to teach the process of learning so that you can reach a point where you feel confident in creating your own exercises to further your development.  My goal is to give you the tools to pursue music, as well as anything else, to the best of your ability without someone watching over your shoulder. That way you’re free to explore whatever it is you love the most!

About Trevor
I am a professional keyboardist with over 25 years’ experience, with training from both Berklee College of Music and Musician’s Institute. Living, playing and teaching professionally in Los Angeles for 10+ years, I have had the privilege of traveling all over the world performing with artists of many different genres, playing everything from intimate jazz clubs to arena pop shows in front of tens of thousands.

Currently, I am the touring organ player for the world-renowned punk rock band Social Distortion and am an endorsed Hammond artist. I am also the founder/keyboardist of a well-known instrumental funk trio, and have released two albums and toured across the U.S. as an original artist. Working with symphonies across the country such as the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Anchorage Symphony, and many
others while backing up special guest singers such as John Elefante of Kansas and Mickey Thomas of Jefferson Starship. I have also made several TV appearances as a guest performer on shows such as Glee and NCIS.

I teach lessons both online and in-person out of my home in Santa Monica. I own a wide array of instruments including a piano, a Hammond B3, a Rhodes Mark II Suitcase, a Hohner D6 Clavinet and a Moog Little Phatty, so we can focus on techniques that apply to any or all of those classic keyboards. I work with students of all ages and skill levels with a variety of musical goals.

I regularly play and teach in styles including rock, pop, blues, R&B, jazz, funk and classical. Having a deep background in classical piano, I competed nationally in the US Open Music Competition throughout my childhood and won multiple medals (including some gold). In addition to topics specific to the piano, I also teach synth programming/digital music creation, patch creation, MIDI programming, recording techniques, vocal coaching, performance coaching, songwriting, and composition.

I have taken lessons here and there throughout my entire life, but never really advanced much further than learning scales. With his enthusiastic and attentive teaching style, Trevor’s guidance helped me to advance really quickly! Before we even started lessons, he asked me to send him music that I liked and wanted to learn how to play, because he said I it would make me want to practice instead of feeling forced. What a great way to get your students to practice! It was so much fun! Trevor had great lesson plans and focused on music theory to truly get me to understand the instrument. Trevor really took the time to invest in me—he even went so far as to go with me to Guitar Center to help me purchase the right piano. His teaching style is straightforward and encouraging. I recommend him all the time to friends looking to learn piano and I recommend him to you, too!!

I used to play piano for 12+ years as a child. Now as an adult, I was nervous to book a lesson as it felt like a rather heavy-lift to start from scratch again. I had tried working with teachers in the past and although they were decent teachers, I never felt motivated to continue my practice/passion. Trevor, on the other hand, made it easy for me to stay committed to my goal of re-learning music; making it fun, enjoyable and something to look forward to on a regular basis. His knowledge of music theory, technique, and communicative teaching style made it effortless for me to dive right back in! Whether you're new to music, trying to re-start, or are looking to become a professional musician, I have no hesitations in recommending Trevor! My love of music has only grown since starting to work with him and I continue to follow this for years to come. Can't thank him enough!
