My philosophy is to push you to exceed your expectations and reach your goals while still having fun. I will push you, but gently and show you a lot of effective ways of practicing so that you achieve more in less time. I am big on technique and really believe in the importance of developing a solid technique, which I will help you to acquire.
A strong technique will give you the tools you need to play whatever you want skillfully. With a commanding technique you will be able to focus on making beautiful music.

I generally divide the lesson into three sections:

Jamila has been giving our 7-year-old twin boys piano lessons for six months, and my wife and I are blown away by what an incredible teacher Jamila is. Our boys began never having played a note in their life, and in just six months they play at a level we didn't think they would reach for at least a year and a half or more. Family and friends who hear the boys play are amazed because their own kids took lessons for years and didn't achieve the same level of skill and knowledge of musical theory so early on--and it is 100% thanks to Jamila! She doesn't underestimate kids or teach down to them. She teaches proper technique and theory in a positive, encouraging, yet rigorous way that I imagine most kids will respond very well to. We feel blessed to have found her.

One word..... AMAZING!!!

Before Ms. Jamila was my piano teacher, I had little interest in the piano. My other teacher gave me boring, easy songs, which didn't help. After that, I despised the piano, and thought I never would play it. Then, Ms. Jamila came along. Unlike my other teacher, she asked my interests and what song I really liked. Now, I don't know how I ever hated it. I believe I will go far with her as my teacher. She posts articles on her blog and her website which deepens my understanding of music. I would reccomend her to anyone, because on a scale of 1 to 10, she's infinity!

Taking guitar lessons and having Joe as my instructor has been a life and career changing event for me. Being in the Adult Rock Ensemble class with Joe has taught me more about how to deal with immediate changes at work, dealing with employees, as well as having fun playing music with friends.

The private lesson experience is unique in that it allows for more “customized” instruction that group lessons or rehearsals alone are not able to give. The instructor and student work one on one as a “team” toward the ultimate goal: a better understanding of their instrument, and a higher level of musical development.

In every lesson, we will work to improve technique, theory, listening/music reading skills, among other things. I will assign exercises and/or pieces each week that are meant to challenge, not overwhelm! Sometimes I will assign an exercise that is expressly meant for a particular area in which the student may not be the strongest, in an effort to develop that area. Learning an instrument is a skill that takes time to develop, and it is within the journey where most valuable learning takes place!

Amanda is a professional Pittsburgh-area flutist and private teacher. She has served as principal flutist with the Pittsburgh Philharmonic as well as second flute/piccolo with the Undercroft Opera. She has also served as a substitute flutist for the Edgewood, Westmoreland and Johnstown Symphonies. Amanda also performs with the Dolce Appassionato Trio, a chamber ensemble comprised of flute, cello, and piano. She is active as a soloist, performing in a variety of venues throughout the Pittsburgh region.

An ardent advocate of early music and historical performance, Amanda also plays the baroque flute. She has performed in masterclasses for internationally known baroque flutists Kim Pineda, Janet See, and Barthold Kuijken.

About me!

I am a Westminster Choir College '11 Alum  who graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Music, summa cum laude. I also have my master's degree in music therapy from Drexel University. I am also a Member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a  Board Certified Music Therapist. During my time at school I performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kimmel Center, and did music therapy work with older adults, as well as disadvantaged children and parents.

I also have my own parent/child music class I host every Thursday September-May. It's never to early to start a music education!

I have been teaching for over four years and now have a studio of more than 70 happy students. Teaching music is my passion, and I love seeing students grow!

I performed different self-composed pieces at seven OSU Composers' Workshops and won the Audience Favorite Award at the Johnstone Woodwinds Composition Competition in 2012. My Senior Composition Recital was performed on October 25, 2012. It showcased several of my three-movement works: string quartet, clarinet solo, set of classical songs for piano and voice, set of pop songs for piano and voice. Interspersed with these were two solo piano pieces and a duet for piano and violin.

My background makes me a knowledgeable and effective tutor. I was valedictorian at Delaware Hayes High School in 2009 and received OSU's Maximus Scholarship based on my ACT and SAT scores.

My name is Amy, and I am a piano teacher who specializes in teaching children. I descend from a long line of musicians (both my mother and grandmother were piano teachers) and have played piano for 21 years, studying with a private instructor for 13 of those. e from the obvious enjoyment one gets out of playing beautiful music, working at a skill week after week helps children build confidence and grow in all areas of life. I coach my students to take pride in their accomplishments, to exude an air of assurance and poise when sitting at the piano, and to become self-directed learners.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
One of the wonderful (and obvious) benefits of private instruction is that each student's unique abilities and shortcomings can be brought into clear focus and addressed. I am highly skilled at encouraging students through a careful balance of praise and constructive criticism. I make sure they are aware of (and take pride in) their strengths so that when challenging moments arise, they are motivated to do the work.

I maintain high expectations for my students, constantly reminding them that it's the quality (not the quantity) of their playing that counts. It is much more important to me that a student learns to play one piece well rather than ten pieces poorly. There is no race to the finish line. I believe in taking however much time is necessary to help a child understand a concept—we might spend the majority of a lesson on it if we have to. Learning must be done at the child's own speed. Children benefit enormously from having 100% of my attention during lessons; they will never need to try and "catch up" with other students.

METHOD:
Most method books for young students focus on teaching the child to read notes on a page, and as one can only learn to read music so fast, children are therefore stuck playing songs that keep the hands rooted on or around Middle C. There are so many problems with this method, least of all the fact that it's quite boring. A bigger issue is the lack of focus on technique and playing. Children are naturally musical--they love to sing and dance. Playing piano should be no different. Children can be taught songs using no music at all; rather, they can learn simple melodies by identifying patterns on the piano. This helps train their ear AND frees the child up to focus on technique rather than scrutinizing the notes on the page. My students get to use the entire keyboard almost right away (both black keys and white keys) rather than being crowded around Middle C.

Another issue with the Middle C position is that it creates an awkward twisting inward of the wrists, which breeds tension. The first thing students should learn is how to play with relaxed wrists, not tense ones!! This is one of the building blocks of good piano technique. Keeping kids rooted around Middle C for the first six months of their piano education does not set them up for good technique.

Now, all of this is not to say that I don't teach children to read music--I do. Absolutely! I introduce intervals and guide notes as soon as possible. I think the intervallic approach is super useful, especially when dealing with children who are coached from a young age to look for patterns. Alongside reading music, though, it is important to teach songs that are only for playing.

For beginning students, I like to use the Piano Safari method. These books offer a wonderful blend of rote pieces (for playing, not reading) and reading pieces that use the intervallic approach. Amy has been great. She adjusted quickly to my skill level (somewhere between beginner and intermediate), tailored what she taught me to my interests, and is generally very patient and helpful. She's skilled, knowledgable, and is great to work with!

Amy is one of the best piano teachers you will ever find. She loves music and is able to pass that passion on to her students. She works with each one as a unique individual, no rote formula or one size fits all approach. We drive from Dayton to Columbus every week because it's worth it to have Amy as a teacher. I would recommend her anytime to anyone seeking quality, enjoyable music instruction.

My 6 years old daughter had a wonderful experience with Amy in Boston, MA. In general she has issues focusing on tasks, but Amy was always able to keep her attention and motivate her to do her best. Amy is very personable, professional and most of all patient, a very important skill to have when dealing with young students. She assigns homework and rewards students for it, helping them to practice with consistency and take pride of their accomplishments. I highly recommend Amy if you are in Columbus area and looking for a positive and enjoyable learning experience.

Hello! With me, the lessons are all about the student's goals. Why do you want to study piano? Do you enjoy the interesting sounds it makes? Then you'll learn how to compose your own music. Are you trying to learn discipline? Then you'll have a clear formula for home practice. Are you just looking for a creative outlet? Then we'll find songs you truly enjoy playing.

I don't use a set curriculum, but instead choose songs from the public domain to suit each student's needs. If a student really wants to learn a particular song, I will help choose a skill-level-appropriate arrangement and ask that the student purchases the song.

My first piano lesson was 19 years ago--that seems like a long time for me. I have both a bachelors and masters in music. I've played both piano and organ professionally for churches and given lessons for a long time.

I believe that music is hard work, but you should enjoy it. If a student ever stops enjoying lessons, I want him or her to tell me so we can readjust. I tend to focus on classical music because it is the best foundation, but if you want to add in your favorite pop song or show tune, I'm all for it!
