I have been teaching piano for almost 20 years. I have taught classical, blues, jazz, country and gospel styles. I am well versed in traditional methods of piano study, but I also have a great deal of success in helping classically trained students learn how to play rock, blues and jazz styles.

About Willy
Willy has been teaching music for more than a decade, carrying on the tradition he learned when his father taught him piano as a youth. He is a multi-instrumentalist with a degree in music from Earlham College in historic Richmond, IN (the birthplace of recorded jazz, and home of 30s era Genette Records).

As a sound technician Willy gained valuable experience working at the world famous Tarry Town Music Hall near Sleepy Hollow, NY, where he worked with top notch touring bands like Blues Traveler, the Indigo Girls, Paul Shaffer, the Marshall Tucker Band, and the late, great Levon Helm. He also worked with A-list actors such as Stanley Tucci, James Cahn, Kevin Bacon and Keanu Reeves.

While living in Austin, TX, Willy was a member of the American Federation of Musicians alongside greats like Los Lonely Boys, George Straight, Lyle Lovet
t and Willie Nelson.

As a father of four young children, Willy teaches in a family friendly environment. At the SIW events, he has taught elementary students as well as adults all the way up to 86 years old! Willy is a background checked teacher and would love to pass on his knowledge of music to you and your family!

Learning Piano by Learning to Read Music

Emphasis on Posture, Hand and Finger Control at the Keyboard, Controlled Relaxation

Classical and Popular Styles

About Robert
Both my mom and dad were musicians and taught private lessons at home, so I grew up wanting to be a part of the music making. Now I am a university music educator who performs frequently as a soloist and collaborative pianist. I hold piano performance degrees from Carnegie Mellon and Yale. In addition, I've studied chamber music at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau (France) and vocal accompanying at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. I perform as a church musician, choral accompanist, and recital pianist in traditional and more modern styles. I'm active as a collaborative artist in competitions, auditions, and recordings. In the past three years I've been studying ballroom dancing for fun and as an extension of my interest in experiencing music from the standpoint of total body movement. It's been a game-changer for sure!

*** Lesson Details ***
I favor an easygoing approach to lessons as a joint venture (and Adventure) between the student and me. I enjoy encouraging students and responding to their individual needs and levels of accomplishment. I have taught beginners of every age as well as more experienced pianists. For beginners I aim to establish a comfortable relationship with the instrument so that they can feel at ease in playing in high and low registers and everywhere in between. For more advanced players the goal is to connect good technique with their own innate musical skill. Students at all levels will work on their music-reading and sight-reading skills. If your dream is to learn to play piano, I can help you to get started. If you already play, I can help you to prepare for auditions and recitals and, in short, to reach the next level. Let's roll!

*** Studio Equipment ***
six foot grand in living room seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
For many years I taught young children from the Frances Clark "Music Tree" series. With more intermediate and advanced students I used the Alfred Series as well as volumes by James and Jane Bastien. I also enjoy teaching and coaching students in the art of accompanying, particularly in choral music and vocal art songs. This is a specialty of mine, as I have made my living as a collaborative pianist. In recent years I have studied more popular genres that include piano arrangements of Gershwin, Porter, Kern, Rodgers, and many other American composers. While I shy away from teaching these to young students (even of high school or college age), I do occasionally teach contemporary arrangements of hymn tunes (Mark Hayes, Larry Shackley, and others) to students who show promise in handling modern genres, which of course require no small amount of technique and discipline.

Derek is a very knowledgable instructor, easy to talk to, and I found his teaching technique is very motivating. He set realistic practice goals for the next session, which will require me to do my part, but that's the reason we show up, to learn how to play a musical instrument.
I highly recommend him.

My teaching philosophy is to instill in my students foundational skills enabling them to play wholesome, beautiful music for their enjoyment and the enjoyment of others. I love to show my students how they can make the piano an extension of their personalities and interests with music from classical to modern genres and activities that give them variety in the lesson and practice time. Games and listening exercises give my students a chance to take a break from playing and develop their senses for further musical understanding and appreciation.

About Grace
I've been a student of music for 17 years and love playing for others and teaching my students how to enjoy music. Most of my teaching experience has come from private lessons with individual students in their homes or mine but I have also really enjoyed being the string teacher for a public middle school and private preparatory school. Some of my students have been as young as 4 and as far advanced as their early 70s! Most of my teaching material comes from a classical standpoint but I make a point of incorporating music from different genres to maintain interest and motivation for each student. When I can spare time from teaching I enjoy playing for events and have had the wonderful experience of travelling overseas to bring music to others.

Grace is such a wonderful piano teacher. We were so blessed to have our children under her teaching for 4 years. She is so patient and the kids just loved her. We have had piano since, and they just don’t get the kids as excited about learning as she does. She demonstrated, corrected, set goals, rewarded, and kept the children excited about progressing. She had special recitals that the kids loved preparing for, and would sometimes reward them with special little outings for good work. My son made tremendous progress under Ms Grace, and we still miss her dearly. She was like a member of the family to us!

Grace is a fantastic teacher and a wonderful person! My daughter just loved taking lessons with her. She is good at motivating the kids and I saw (heard) huge improvements in my daughters' playing. Since we moved, we've yet to find a teacher that compares.

I am a good friend of Grace's and a violin and piano teacher myself as well as a professional violinist. Grace has a real heart for her students and is great at adding things to her lessons that make it fun for the student to learn. She has years of experience as a musician and teacher and I highly recommend her as a top notch instructor.

I am one of the most diverse piano teachers you will find. I can thoroughly teach both classical and jazz, as well as theory, composition, and music technology. My teaching style is fun, motivating, and challenging all at the same time.

About Natalie
I have been playing piano since I was 7 years old and grew up with classical training and spent a lot of time composing and learning things by ear at a young age. In high school I attended the Arts & Communications Academy at Thomas Johnson High School. I then traveled to Shepherd University with almost a full ride to study classical piano and composition. After one year I decided I wanted to intensify my studies and attend Shenandoah Conservatory where I began studying jazz piano. While at Shenandoah, I was immersed in a rich learning environment that increased my knowledge and experience in classical repertoire, and gave me my foundation in jazz harmony, improvising, and performing live in a variety of settings and ensembles. In 2017 I graduated from Shenandoah Conservatory with my BM in Jazz Studies. Since graduating I have become a pa
rt of the DC music scene working with R&B artists, singer-songwriters, jazz groups, funk groups, fusion groups and traveled to major cities all over the east coast performing in these various musical groups. Music has been my life for as long as I can remember. I am always performing, rehearsing, jamming, and writing. When I started teaching in high school I realized I had a similar passion for sharing my knowledge with others and inspiring my students. So join me in my studio where you can learn everything from classical piano, to jazz piano, to dealing with synthesizers and learning what all those knobs and buttons mean!
