I teach traditional piano lessons where students learn both classical and popular/rock/jazz styles of playing. I ask students their goals and help them work toward these goals. For example, goals might be:

1. Play classical music well enough to get accepted into a college music program.
2. Play pop/rock songs from the radio.
3. Learn keyboard music for a band.

I'm happy to work with all types of goals, and look forward to helping you enjoy playing.

About David
I am happy to offer piano lessons for beginning to advanced students, and guitar and violin lessons for beginning to upper intermediate students. I teach music in all genres, including pop/rock, classical, ragtime, Broadway, country, jazz, and more - whatever you like best.

I encourage students to learn music they are interested in, and to have fun with lessons, while also making sure that they have strong sight-reading and ear training skills, and a solid classical background.

I am a former K-12 Orchestra, Band, Piano, and Choir Teacher. I taught at the Winans Academy of Performing Arts (Detroit) and Madison Academy (Flint). I hold the equivalent of a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Michigan - Flint with piano as primary instrument. I played piano in the MSU Jazz Band and UM-Flint Jazz Band. I was also
a guitar singer-songleader at Tamarack Camps (Ortonville, MI) for seven summers, and I've played in and taught many string orchestras.

Let me know your musical goals and I will work to help you achieve them.

*** Lesson Details ***
My standard curriculum books are Alfred for Piano, Hal Leonard for Guitar, and Belwin for violin. However, if your preference is to use a different method book or teaching style, I'm happy to adjust to what you would like.

After three to six months, students on piano, violin, or guitar will know proper playing positions, the notes on the musical clefs, most types of notes and rests, and most importantly, they will be able to play at least a few real songs of progressing difficulty. After you've learned the basics, we can find sheet music at the correct difficulty level for some of your favorite songs.

I won't be strict or mad if you are not working to your potential. However, I will let you know one of the most important things about learning an instrument: "no one can practice your instrument for you." You can't even pay someone to do it, because it is impossible to transfer the knowledge. Therefore, it is very important that you work hard and practice in the ways that I will show you in the lessons. Don't worry - you'll be really proud of yourself for working hard and improving your skills.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the living room with an upright piano, acoustic guitars, violin, and seating available. No pets. Parking on the street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring method books if necessary, and provide written instructions for practice each week if they would like. The student is expected to provide the instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I am able to teach all styles of piano from classical to pop, beginner to advanced. I am familiar with many methods and can teach according to the students' preference.

I am also able to teach guitar, violin and music recording and music theory in all styles, with many different methods. I own a home studio and use Pro Tools, and I am familiar with Logic Pro and Garageband software.

Some students have the desire to be concert pianists or to teach piano themselves, others just wish to play with a band or play songs which they can sing to. Both styles are valuable skills to learn. I will discuss with the student which direction they would like to go and decide together what the student would like to learn.

Michelle does a great job with my 6 year old son. He has been getting weekly lessons for over a year now, and is making a lot of progress. He also enjoys the lessons enough to look forward to them. I was worried he would lose interest, but so far that is not the case. Michelle makes it fun and provides small rewards and lots of encouragement. I wanted to expose my son to the experience and enjoyment that comes with learning to play music, and Michelle has made that possible.

Helping students to play by ear and to be able to read basic chord charts and beginning and intermediate piano methods along with theory and technique exercises. Special areas include Pop, Rock Jazz and Worship music.

About Tom
I have been teaching guitar and piano for many years in the Metro Detroit area. I have also played professionally in many local nightclub and wedding bands as well as having toured with "Bob Seger" as his lead guitarist/writer/vocalist. I have done recording sessions for "Motown" as well as having studied under "Joe Messina", a legendary Motown guitarist with the original "Funk Brothers." I take great pleasure in mentoring, training and equipping students with the necessary musical skills to achieve at the personal and or professional level according to the specific student's interest, desire and goals. I tailor my teaching methods according to the student's ability and musical preference, and can teach most anything from classic rock, to pop, classical, oldies, jazz, etc. Many of my students have gone on to play at the professional leve
l, and one, in particular, has become a music professor at "Berklee School of Music". Another former student plays with the band: "Thirty Seconds To Mars." I have also been able to assist those students who have a desire to introduce vocals while playing their instrument. I am also able to provide personal assistance in songwriting when needed.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very easy to get along with during lessons, however I can provide extra encouragement and motivation the student needs based on their specific goals for taking lessons, whether it be for personal enjoyment or for the purpose of making music their career. I believe that learning music can be fun even as a serious venture, and therefore I incorporate humor when appropriate. The curriculum I use includes: "Berklee, Mel Bay, and Hal Leonard" methods for guitar. For Piano I use "Schaum and Thompson" piano methods as well as Hannon for technique. Additionally, I invite students to suggest personal favorite songs of interest of their choosing as a motivational tool to aid them learning from the music that inspires them. I find this very helpful for students in developing a good ear as well as sparking motivation to practice as they learn from their favorite musical artists in addition to learning the fundamentals of the instrument.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide music method books/sheet music etc. Students would need to own and bring their own instrument to lessons. I also provide guitar amplification.

*** Specialties ***
Berklee, Mel Bay, and Hal Leonard blues guitar method's. Schaum piano method. Hannon Technique. Pop, rock and jazz styles.

Most people are intimidated by the thought of learning piano. Truth is, piano isn't as hard as it may seem. Sure it's a challenge, but so are a number of other things that we do from day to day. Despite the challenge, the key is to keep at it (practice, practice, and more practice) rather than doubting or belittling your skills. My goal is to make you confident in your skills and abilities and shine like we know you can.

About Michael
Hello, my name is Michael. I began giving private lessons age 17, while still in high school, only offering voice at the time. Within another two years I added piano and music theory to the fold. I started this to help those wanting all the musical knowledge that one could gain, or those just looking to better their skill. My private tutoring and instructing lessons started here in Detroit, and has taken me as far as Las Vegas, NV. My goal remains to provide an excellent musical experience to various students at the most affordable rates. Also, I offer academic tutoring to those who need that as well.

I started taking lessons from Michael about two years ago and I knew hardly anything about playing piano. I knew a few children's songs just by messing around on the instrument, but nothing further. Michael taught me how to apply music theory to piano so that I know what's going on musically, and know how to play what's going on musically. He's great if you ask me. He's very knowledgeable, yet admits that he himself is still learning and growing.

Experienced teacher with 5 years of teaching experience. My goal is to engage the students in not just learning piano, but also creating music with a strong background in music theory, note reading, great technique and more!

About Carrie
I am currently pursuing a dual Masters degree at the University of Michigan in piano performance and chamber music. I have taught for five years and have been continually amazed by the work that the students have done in music. I love interacting with kids and adults who come to me because of their love for piano. Back at home in California I have had students take the ABRSM exams in both the performance and music theory and pass successfully. I help students reach the excellence that they wish to achieve. Although I am a very patient teacher, I still push students when needed so they reach goals they did not think they could have reached. I teach a lot of beginners, so many of them build their foundations of music (note reading, rhythm, music theory, dynamics) with me. I would love to get to know the students more and support them in th
eir endeavors in piano!
