Students begin to read music at their first lesson. Beginners will learn simple repertoire, and as their skills progress more challenging songs.
Piano lessons include music theory, scales, chords and rhythm exercises. There are 1 or 2 yearly piano recitals students look forward to performing in.
Julia has studied voice under the private tutelage of Greta Matassa, Dr. Sheila K. Converse, Dr. John Weiss, and Gene Wright. Julia has also studied trumpet with Lance Buller and jazz piano with Dr. Charles Argersinger. She worked as a vocal soloist for Sacred Heart Baptist Church in Pullman, WA, sang with the Seattle Womens’ Chorus, and crooned at Tula’s Restaurant and Jazz Club. Julia was an avid performer in the School of Music at Washington State University, including the Library Atrium Recital Series,
A personalized plan is made for each student depending on their goals and level of commitment. Intensity varies depending on what the student's goals are, and how much the student is available to fit in practice time. Some students are singing/playing competitively, and some are just singing/playing for fun!
At each lesson we will tune and warm-up, and review the practice assignment from the previous lesson. Julia will congratulate the student on their improvements and then use a variety of methods to help the student become more comfortable with any potential trouble spots. The next part of the lesson will be used to introduce new material.
Most lessons take place at Juia's home studio. For an additional fee, lessons may be booked at the students location or home.
-Vocal lessons require a piano. Vocalists requesting in home lessons need to own a piano; a keyboard may even work depending on the maximum decibal output.
-All piano students must have a keyboard or piano available to practice outside of lesson time.
-Guitar players also do need to own a guitar in order to practice outside of lesson time.

Proper finger technique, scales, and ear training for students who want it.
I try to teach what the students are interested in and make it fun and interesting so that they learn the lessons and their favorite songs. Every student is different and needs to be taught in a way that makes learning easy and fun for them.
I have a passion for all people and all ages and am blessed to be able to teach from the very young, (ages 2-5 Toddlermusik lessons) to teens and adults.....all the way to senior citizens. I've had many older students all the way up to a 93 year old gentleman who is taking singing lessons and asked me to put music to his lyrics. We have recorded over 50 songs together.
I started playing trumpet in 5th grade and knew that music was for me. I also liked playing with drums and piano also because they seemed exciting. I've competed in WSMA (Wi
I started playing the guitar and bass guitar when I was 13 and have never stopped practicing and performing since. I also have done a lot of writing, recording, producing, and have a Pro Tools Studio for students to use.
***College and Teaching***
I began teaching music lessons in college and enjoyed it very much. I received my B.A. in Music from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. There I was very much involved with guitar, piano, voice, trumpet, and being in bands and writing music. After receiving my B.A. I also took 3 years of Education classes at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. I write, produce, and perform my music along with performing with bands around the Midwest.
***Life in Music***
After receiving my B.A. in Music, I continued teaching and opened up my home studio. After a year and a half I had enough students that I was able to quit my factory job and teach music full time. I've been teaching, performing, and writing music ever since.
***Performing and more***
I have been on stage performing music since I was 11. In school band, marching band, competing in music competitions, and in bands touring the Midwest.
I have recorded many CDs with bands and on my own. My most ambitious project was a CD of my original music called, "Girls". I've performed my music and promoted it by being interviewed on Milwaukee radio stations along with internet music sites such as CD Baby. It is very exciting talking on live radio about my music and my passion. It is also even more exciting, and scary, playing my music live on the radio, lol.
I have been teaching for over 2 decades. Students take lessons for:
* guitar (electric / acoustic)
* music theory / ear training
* studio recording / songwriting
I also give kindermusik lessons to 2-5 year old all the way up to senior citizens 70-93. I play parties, concerts, and Nursing Home performances.
I am experienced as an online (Skype) instructor, and I have taught online lessons worldwide. I've witnessed great results from my online students (both national and international).
I hope I can help you with all of your musical goals and get you going in a positive musical direction.

I love teaching piano! Within the first few lessons you will start reading music. As you continue you will be able to play basic pop songs and introductory classical pieces. I use a mix of classical and keyboard teaching styles. For your core study I use Piano Adventure by Nancy and Randall Faber and I also love hearing song suggestions from students. I specialize pop styles and beginning students. I enjoy working with all levels of students and look forward to meeting you!
***Frequently Asked Questions***
What is your availability?
Just select a subject and a lesson location in the upper righthand corner above and you can see my availability!
What do lessons cost?
30 minutes $25
45 minutes $35
60 minutes $45
I recommend lessons once per week. 30 minute lessons are good for beginning piano students. 45 minute lessons are ideal for singers and intermediate piano students. 60 minute lessons are appropriate for advanced students interested in studying lots of repertoire or for singers who are having a particularly difficult time with ear training.
What do you do in lessons?
To learn what you would be doing in a lesson just select a subject in blue under "Heather Teaches" at the top of this page for a description of how each lesson works in that subject.
I want to study piano, do I have to have a real piano?
No, you don't have to have a real piano but you do need at least a keyboard, preferably one that gets louder or softer depending how hard you hit a key, has at least 61 keys, and has a sustain pedal.
Do you help singers who want to learn rap, metal, or some other non-conventional style of singing?
Yes, I have actually worked with some metal bands before! Even if you are using something like screaming you can use it in a way that hurts your voice less. I love to apply good technique to styles like that.

5: Parents/guardians may sit-in on lessons only if they do not disturb them. You may wait in the car or run an errand if you prefer.
1: I will provide a tailored curriculum to meet student’s individual needs while setting goals and encouraging a feeling of success at each student’s individual rate of learning.
2: I am a stay-at-home mom and occasionally I may need to attend to a child. In the rare circumstance that your lesson is interrupted, I will offer you make-up time at the end of the lesson or at a time that is most convenient for you.
1: If given 24 hours notice, I will allow for a makeup lesson or cancellation. If I am not notified within 24 hours a lesson credit will be used regardless of whether or not the student attends.
2: All lessons missed as a result of the teacher canceling will be made up at a convenient time or credited to the next lesson.
If a student chooses to terminate lessons (after the introductory five-lesson period), the parent/guardian or adult student must inform the studio with a 30-day notice. The student is responsible for purchasing the last month’s lessons whether they choose to use the lesson credits or not.

Experienced Piano teacher of 5 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation in their piano skills. I specialize in classical, gentle, and theatrical music. I typically use the Faber Piano Adventures series for beginning and some intermediate students, however I will choose a curriculum that fits the student. I supplement the series with works by classical composers or music theme songs from TV shows, Disney movies, or Broadway shows. I also have the following tools available to use during lessons: pianos, sheet music, and more.

Lessons are scheduled to fit the student’s schedule.
