I have been teaching this subject for over 16 years. The main curriculum for beginners is Alfred's Basic Piano Library. There are three beginner levels (beginner, late, adult) and one will be selected after the first meeting. For non-beginning students, the course of study will be developed based on past experience, current abilities, and goals. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is a part of subsequent lessons. Music is not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

About Troy

Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. Troy is an absolutely magical teacher and mentor. He not only provides caring, personalized instruction that goes far beyond the traditional fundamentals, he really takes the time to push me in ways that I find enjoyable and rewarding. I feel as though my lessons are dynamic and varied enough to keep me always engaged and looking forward to that next session. Best of all, Troy is that special type of guru that really gives you that added incentive to go the extra mile...I never feel a guilt or pressure to be at a certain level or practice a certain amount, I just feel this desire to impress Troy during my next lessons. Awesome stuff - very special guy! Looking forward to a lifetime of learning with Troy!

Gretchen Conrad is a trained classical vocalist and emerging composer. In 2014, she graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Music. She is a founding member of Fine Rain Falling, an all-female a cappella ensemble, and a member of the St. James Women's Schola in Seattle, WA. My lessons are highly personalized as I believe that there is no one path for every student. In addition to learning pieces from the lesson book, I also incorporate theory and history for perfect performance practice. Using these methods, my students develop into well rounded musicians that are able to tackle new and challenging pieces.

As a piano teacher, I teach Premiere and Adult Levels out of Alfred’s Piano Library Books Series and Levels 1-4 from Bastein Piano Basics, ages 5 years old-Adult. I invented a music theory game called Match that teaches and reinforces music theory and vocabulary as well as notation in less than half the normal time. Students can learn bass clef and treble clef notes in 30 minutes by playing Match! The kids love the game and don’t even realize they are learning!

I look forward to my lesson every week and the time spent there just flies by so fast. Stan is very interesting and gives me a lot of information to help me understand music historically and in practice. He tailors his lesson to me. A great teacher! Thanks Stan!"

"Minoo is an excellent teacher! She's very patient and she makes it fun. She actually had me playing songs by my 2nd lesson! For someone who had no idea how to read music let alone play the piano before she walked through my door, I find it quite remarkable. I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting to learn how to play."

"Updating my previous review. After 5 sessions, Randy has been able to give me the exact kind of tips and techniques I was hoping for from a teacher; with much more to come I'm sure. For several decades I had neglected any music skills I may have had as a child - even steering clear of a piano or keyboard for fear of someone asking me to sit down and play. I'm confident those fears are waning and will be gone in short order under Randy's lead."

He does a great job with very young learners, keeping the lessons fast-paced and fun, with lots of creative games and activities. My son has made quick progress and is getting a strong foundation in musical theory. Even in doing our classes online the last few weeks, Andrew has kept the lessons engaging and fun. "Bryan has very unique lesson plans and can channel his musical thoughts very clearly. He was very understanding and reflective of my needs. He then presented me with a series of mental models and exercises which i am certain will make me not just a better pianist but a better musician and also help me appreciate music better.

I would highly highly recommend Bryan and i will certainly continue the musicial journey with him."

"I have been struggling to learn how to play for 35 years and never could find the right instructor for "Me". I have come to the conclusion that I will never play the piano so I have given up on my dream. I felt this was a big let down in my life and I couldn't let myself down by giving up. So I started a search again for an Instructor that will be good for me. My search online took me to takelessons and I was connected with Paul.

I thought, "What do I have to lose, nothing". So I signed up and I have to say after meeting Paul and taking, now 3 lessons, I find that I finally found the instructor for me.

Paul is very attentive to my learning needs and is very accommodating in adopting his teaching style to fit my learning style. I am a slow learner, as well as, a sight learner (in other words, I have to see what one is explaining for me to understand) Paul has taken his time with me to show and explain everything to me.

Paul encourages me to ask questions and he will take the time to answer any question that I have and if I don't understand, Paul will explain it differently to me until I understand. Paul has a vast knowledge in music, Piano and other instruments which is very reassuring to me.

I know I have made the right decision to take my lessons with Paul. I have to say, I will finally be able to achieve a dream of mine that I have had for the past 35 year, and it's all thanks to Paul.

Thank you so much, Paul!!!"
