About Marci

Welcome to my piano studio!

I am a Lawrence native, and my piano studio is in my home. I have bounced between Lenexa and Lawrence a few times in my adult life, and I moved back to Lawrence 3 years ago, this time to stay.

I began classical piano studies at 8 years old, in the private studio of a local concert pianist. I participated in recitals, concerts, camps and master classes, and in the 7th grade I started performing in a variety of venues, as an accompanist for vocalists, instrumentalists, choirs and musicals.

I have a B.A. and M.A. from KU, and acquired my Kansas State Teaching License at Washburn University. I am classified as "highly qualified" in the fields of Psychology, Biology and General Science. I taught school in Topeka, then in the Shawnee Mission Public Schools. My graduate degree is in Human Development, and

I taught Child Behavior & Development classes at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. I believe I am a unique piano teacher, having studied children and young adults and how they learn. I encourage my students to work towards their goals, but I'm patient and know when a skill is currently beyond the child's grasp due to his or her individual development. Every child learns and develops differently, so each student's lessons are highly individualized.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have a relaxed teaching style, a sense of humor, and lots of patience! I absolutely love the one-on-one teaching experience I get with teaching private lessons. Students tend to feel welcome and comfortable in my home studio. A beginning student will be surprised to be reading and playing music within just a few weeks!

Curricula:
For beginning piano curriculum, I like the Piano Adventures series by Faber & Faber. I also use a series called A Dozen A Day, technical exercises for the piano which teaches a little theory along the way, but makes it fun! For older students, I like Czerny and Hanon exercises to strengthen fingers and hands. I focus on reading music, and I work on sight-reading skills with adolescents and young adults. There are all kinds of on-line resources that I consult for ideas. Lessons are a combination of theory, learning the keyboard, and learning to read music.

For intermediate piano students, I will determine their level of musical understanding and design an individualized curriculum to address areas of improvement, and to build on each student's strengths.

In addition to the mechanics of music, I try to instill an appreciation for all types and genres of music in my students. I strongly believe that the most competent and interesting musicians are the ones who are familiar with music from all walks of life.

Lastly, I do most of the choosing of music for students to study. There are lots of things to consider when choosing a piece or a book for a young pianist to study. But I do like to explore, and am open to suggestions from my students. It's easier to practice when you are playing something you really enjoy. Not every song makes a good piano piece, but I will work with you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, Guitar, Computer, Music Software

*** Specialties ***
Keyboard basics, music theory, playing technique, sight-reading music. Working with little ones.

We signed up with Marci for beginner lessons with my 6 year old daughter and couldn't be happier! She is fantastic with children! She is very patient and has many creative ways to motivate, engage and work with young children on their level. One of the many things I love most about working with Marci is that she established a relationship with my daughter which helped tremendously in bringing her "out of her shell". Marci has provided age and level appropriate materials that my daughter loves to play from! Marci, thank you for being such a wonderful teacher!

This is my third review of Marci's teaching. My son, Arthur, participates in weekly piano lessons, and is still enjoying them!

Arthur has been practicing hard for his next recital, and I'm really looking forward to hearing him play :)

Keep up the good work!

We begin with exercises to develop technique and train for agility, musicality and music theory. Classical music is used but not exclusively as we explore the many different genres of music! Ear training is also offered so that the student may be able to play by ear as well as reading music.

About Tim

My wife and I have been teaching piano lessons in the Kansas City area for more than 20 years. We have studios in our home; she teaches upstairs and I teach downstairs! I am currently accepting new students and welcome the opportunity to see them grow and experience the joy of piano playing.

While some of my piano students are involved in church music, I also teach students in the entire Kansas City area and we cover every genre: classical, country, pop, rock and Broadway styles. I encourage each pianist to discover his or her own passion for playing!

I have more than 33 years of experience teaching private piano students and look forward to many, many more. Let me help you learn to play the piano with excellence and have a lot of fun in the process!

*** Lesson Details ***
Students can expect to have a teaching environment

that is professional and conducive to learning. My lessons include instruction in theory, technique and exposure to a variety of musical styles. Beginners will learn to play songs within 3 months time and gradually expand their repertoires to include more difficult piano pieces!

Beginning students are taught fundamental skills that apply to all piano players such as scales and arpeggios. Hanon exercises are used and chromatic scales are learned as well. I use Alfred teaching materials but not exclusively.

I encourage students to find their own favorites to play and lessons are tailored to meet the goals of the student. If your desire is to become a classical pianist, we concentrate on works of the masters. If you are wanting to improvise with a jazz band, we work toward ear training with the jazz greats! If you would like to play in a church worship service, we will focus our attention on service playing and playing worship songs by ear, too.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Den: upright, couch and recliner, parents can sit in on lesson

*** Specialties ***
Classical and church music

Students learn music theory as applied to the keyboard, sight-reading, improvisation and the application of classical technique to modern styles.

About David

*Now also offering online lessons*

Guitar

David picked up the guitar when he moved from his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona in 2001 at the age of 19 and hasn't looked back since. 7 years and countless hours of practicing, performing and teaching later, David plays at multiple venues in the Kansas City area while teaching from his studio at Guitar Source in Overland Park,, Southland Conservatory in Raymore, and in home tutoring service Mobile Music Teachers. David also teaches and records from his home studio in Raytown, MO where he offers lessons for home schoolers during the daytime hours.

As a guitarist David is motivated primarily by his passion for music. Growing up he was influenced by classical, jazz, and film scores. Since picking up the guitar he has been inspired by guitarists from such diverse backgrounds as Eric Johnson,

Robben Ford, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Martin Taylor, and James Taylor, to name a few. Today David plays and teaches a variety of different styles, ranging from rock and blues to classical and jazz.

Piano

David started to play the piano after years of playing the guitar. Although a second instrument, it in many ways it was the first as everything David has aspired to on the guitar is pianistic, and he draws much of his inspiration on the instrument from piano players. Correspondingly, it wasn't long before David picked up the piano itself, studying privately first with Tatev Amir and later with Karen, Kushner, Professor of Piano Studies at UMKC. David applies many of the same principles to the piano that he does the guitar including stressing a comprehensive knowledge of music theory, self transcription, ear training and classical technique as well as the more traditional facets of piano pedagogy such as sight reading and rhythm work. Students learn music theory as applied to the keyboard, sight-reading, improvisation and the application of classical technique to modern styles.

As a pianist David is motivated primarily by his passion for music. Growing up he was influenced by classical, jazz, and film scores. Since picking up the piano he has been inspired by pianists from such diverse backgrounds as Art Tatum, Nicolai Lugansky, Oscar Peterson, and Bill Evans among others. Today David plays and teaches a variety of different styles, ranging from rock and blues to classical and jazz.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have extensive experience with all ages and skill levels. I use a curriculum specifically geared towards the guitar, as opposed to more traditional (and inferior) methods that emphasize note reading and piano pedagogy, my method will teach you music theory as it relates to the neck of the guitar and the music that the student are interested in. I am a fairly laid back teacher; we will go at your pace, but I do expect you to work hard.

With piano I use classical literature to develop technique but emphasize the development of a comprehensive understanding of music theory as applied to the keyboard. This includes but is not limited to studies in pop, rock, jazz and other style of contemporary piano.

*** Studio Equipment ***
#1) Dedicated music room seating for parents

#2) Practice/rehearsal room seating for parents

#3) Amplification provided and music stand.

#4) Keyboard/Piano for student use

#5) Broadband network, dual camera, file sharing and the latest technology utilized for online lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a music stand, my instrument, curriculum materials, music paper materials and amplification (if needed). I expect the student to have their own instrument and potentially amplification. I provide a piano for instruction but I expect my students to have a piano or keyboard for practice at home.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical and jazz guitar, however I am fluent in most styles, including rock, blues, fingerstyle, and miscellaneous. I teach from Jay EuDaly's "Vertical Truth: Chordal Mechanisms for the Guitar" but I also supplement this with a variety of other curriculum.

In piano I specialize in classical piano as well as jazz and pop.

Private Piano Teacher

I remember when I started taking piano lessons as a child, I was extremely nervous to meet a new teacher and play for them. I wasn't even the painfully shy type, but something about playing music in front of a professional can be very intimidating. I had this expectation of myself to already be good, and I feared that the teacher would make me feel like I wasn't talented enough or didn't have what it took. Thankfully, I had wonderful music teachers (most of the time!) that would create an atmosphere where I felt comfortable. My lessons with my teacher, Mr. Decker, were a joy every week. Now that I myself am continuing this tradition of music instruction (10+ years of teaching experience), I know how important it is to create an environment in which the student feels at ease, and in the right frame of mind for learning and growth. Although I am very serious about achieving musical goals and making fast progress, I know that music is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. Mr. Decker was ...

About Gabriel

Greetings! My name is Gabriel, and I want to welcome you into the wonderful world of piano playing! I am an experienced teacher you can trust to take you or your child to the highest level. I've been playing piano for over 29 years (since I was three)! Growing up in a musical family, I first studied with my mother, who still teaches to this day in Orlando, FL. I studied at the University of Miami, graduating in 2008 with a Bachelors of Arts in Music. Some of my career highlights are
Performing with the Frost Wind Ensemble in Carnegie Hall in 2006.
Performing regularly with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. They still tour around the world under the direction of Terry Myers.
Performing with The Temptations and The Four Tops (on saxophone, my other professional instrument).
Playing at Universal Orlando's Wizarding World of Harry Potter from

2014-2018.

My teaching philosophy can be summed up in one word: Listening. I think this is the most important skill for a musician, music teacher, and music student. I listen to the student and find out what music already excites them. Then, through that music that they are already interested in, I teach them the universal fundamentals of music: first RHTYHM, then MELODY, then HARMONY. Practice can be fun when you are learning music that you love! I remember being a student myself, and being bored by many of the pieces I had to learn. Practice was drudgery at times! But, as I got older, I started making my own musical choices on what to study, and then I couldn't take myself away from practice! I look forward to my practice time every day, and I want to show you how to have that same excitement for learning and growth. I tailor my lessons to the needs of the individual student. I am always kind and patient, but I do push you to achieve your full potential! Let's get started!

Music lessons with me are one of a kind. My experience as both a classical guitarist and an electric guitarist who has played with successful rock bands puts me in a unique position to provide a breadth and depth of skills to my students. I earned a Doctorate in music composition; this education allows me to offer a deep understanding of the music a student and I will study using music theory and music history. In short, lessons with me are not only fun and vibrant--they are also intellectually invigorating!

About Frank

Hello! I am a Michigan-born, Kansas-based guitarist and composer. I love listening to hip-hop, rock and roll, and contemporary classical music. In my free time, I hang out with my wife, my dog, and my cat (and sneak in some video game time here and there!)

I have a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Kansas. I have been an active contemporary classical guitarist in the Kansas City area since arriving here in 2016. Over the past decade, I have earned a reputation as a dependable gigging guitarist and bassist. I have played guitar and bass in various musicals, operas, and rock bands since 2007. Additionally, my compositions have been performed across the USA as well as in Hong Kong, Croatia, and Canada.

I have over a decade of experience teaching guitar, bass, and beginner's piano. As a teacher, I have a reputation of being

fun and approachable to students of all ages while also being known as a teacher with a deep knowledge about music due to my real-world experience and academic training. Whatever your student studies with me, and whatever their goals may be, I can guarantee that they will have fun and be intellectually enriched.
