About Nicholas
Nick comes from a family of four generations of music in the GREEK/Balkan repertoire. He graduated from Columbia College of Chicago with a concentration in Music Composition in December of 2009. Currently teaching and performing professionally, Nick enjoys all styles of music, but has been declared as an "old soul" by many of his friends. He enjoys playing lots of Motown, funk, and jazz, but is proficient in Classical, Rock, and Blues as well. When not playing music (rarely), he is a Board member for the GivingBackPack Foundation which provides school supplies to underprivileged children. Nick's dedication to education is shown through his music and his personal volunteer hours, he feels his diverse background gives his students an advantage to a broader perspective of music and theory.

I hadn't played the trumpet in 30 years. My first lesson with Nicholas was like starting from scratch. He is very knowledgeable, polite, professional, and definitely patient. I feel that that homework Nicholas assigned was spot on. I'm playing better already after only two days. I would certainly recommend him to a friend.

Nicholas really tailored the lessons to what I needed. They weren't cookie-cutter lessons, and I appreciated that. He answered all the questions I had, and helped me understand some concepts that I never would have gotten just learning online. I definitely recommend him as a teacher.

Nicholas was very patient, took the time to write down information that was helpful (very helpful). Nicholas understood where I was in reference to me knowing nothing about the guitar and he is very knowledgeable with the music trade. He was very clear and kept things simple. I truly enjoy his instructions, can't wait for the next lesson.

Seasoned piano teacher with 10 years of experience; works in classical, rock, and jazz styles. I make piano FUN and ADDICTIVE for students! I enjoy working with all ages and can accommodate a wide range of tastes from Beethoven to Adele.

About David
Originally from Indiana, David has been teaching music in both the private and public school sectors for 12 years. Getting his start as a drumline instructor with only 4 students, David soon expanded his teaching to include both guitar and piano, which he studied under Frank Puzzulo (of Miles Davis' group) at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

Upon graduating Ball State, David moved to Colorado to study jazz and classical music with Dr. Douglas Walter, an accomplished percussionist who is known for his versatility and multiple percussion talents. He also studied piano and guitar in his off time, jamming with several rock and jazz groups both in and out of school.

In 2006, David left the college scene with a Masters in Music and moved to Florida where he began his teaching career. In Florida, David taught roughly 70 s
tudents, ages 5 to 18, at Wewahitchka High School and Middle School. He was beloved by the town, helping out in the community as a local organist for the Presbyterian Church and as a frequent contributor to Wednesday night worship.

As wonderful as this time was, David gave up the gators and swamps to move back home to Indiana in 2007. Here, he took a job at Kokomo High School and Maple Crest Middle school where he resumed teaching students from 5th graders to seniors in all areas of music, including wind, strings/guitar and percussion. David established the first ever "rock and roll" class at the high school in 2008, a program that started with only 5 students and has ballooned to 38 in this current year! The class consisted of guitars, keyboards, bass and drums, all of which David can teach at a professional level.

Most recently, David graduated with his second Masters in Jazz Performance from DePaul University. He studied primarily with professor Ron Perillo, unquestionably the most innovative piano player in Chicago and with Bob Palmieri, a gifted guitarist. Having now graduated, David is devoting himself full time to teaching private students and looks very much forward to working with you!

*** Lesson Details ***
Although David has a laid back personality and approach to life, he takes his job very seriously. He prides himself in not being the kind of teacher who is there simply to entertain and hope the student learns something in the process. Though you will most certainly have a good time, you should only take from him if you really want to become a great musician/player. Having been a highly qualified public school teacher for 5 years, David has more experience than most private teachers you can find. He knows what it takes to achieve greatness and he knows that most students, in the end, respect that more than a half hour "jam session."

David will tailor his curriculum to each student. Every student is expected to have a notebook with staff paper and a pencil at their lesson. Students will also be assigned a book to purchase (in some cases more than one) and he/she will progress through it at a pace appropriate to his or her level.

More than anything, what you will see in David's lessons is his love for music and teaching music. It is truly a special thing to be gifted in this art, and he believes that anyone who is willing to put in the time, the effort and the dedication needed will be rewarded and enriched in the end.

David is also available for online lessons via Skype! He loves taking advantage of this modern technology in his lessons and is happy to take on new students in this format.

*** Studio Equipment ***
He has a fully weighted digital piano, electronic keyboard, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, clarinet, flute and various percussion equipment in a room completely devoted to music. Can accommodate seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring my own guitar/bass, but any drum lessons or piano lessons would require the student to have the necessary instrument at home.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in non-wind instruments, especially drums, percussion, bass guitar, piano and rock guitar. I consider myself extremely versatile with various styles and genres. Piano lessons are taught on a wonderful, fully weighted 88 key keyboard. I apply several teaching methods to reach as many kids as possible, with a focus on hands-on learning.

David is a bright and multi-talented musician and teacher. He has shared his passion for music with my two daughters, teaching them piano. He is patient and kind. His approach strikes a perfect balance between imparting theory, technique and mechanics and being silly and having fun! Both of my daughters really enjoy him and look forward to their weekly lessons. The two girls are very different in their strengths, interests and personalities. He tailors his lessons to each of them to play to their strengths and tastes beautifully. And he is always positive and encouraging even when they are squirrely. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Some styles of piano I can teach at an intermediate level (i.e. jazz); others styles I can teach at an advanced level. I teach beginners of all ages. Call TakeLessons for more details...

About Veronica
I began my own piano studies at age 10 and voice studies at age 15. I have been teaching private piano and voice lessons for 11 years to students of many ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. I received my BA with a focus in music performance (piano and voice) from Columbia College Chicago.  I also received my MA in Community Counseling from Northeastern Illinois University.  With that combination of skills, I know how to teach music, pass on an appreciation for music, develop a rapport with students and families, and modify my teaching approach based on a student's most natural learning ability. My own music experience includes solo performance, ensemble/band performance, theater performance, and songwriting. I am currently in two bands, and I am developing a jazz and songwriting repertoire to perform as a solo vocalist/pianist.

Lesson Details ***
I am somewhere between strict and laid back. I definitely want my students to master the skills I teach them, but I don't have a timeline for mastery. I believe everyone learns at their own pace and in their own way. I encourage regular practicing, but I also encourage practicing in moderation in order to avoid burn-out. I use a variety of curriculum depending on the student's musical ability, age, instrument (piano or voice), and musical goals. I do recommend that students under 10 years of age who are interested in voice lessons also study piano, as piano will give students a more thorough music awareness/education.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a microphone, sound system, baby grand piano, and electric piano in my home studio. I also have many, many music books.

*** Specialties ***
I can teach all styles of piano and all contemporary styles of voice, beginner to intermediate/advanced. I can also teach self-accompaniment skills (playing piano while singing) to more intermediate/advanced students who are interested in focusing on that.

When I teach any beginners in piano, I always use method books. I also reference some method books to help my beginning voice students understand the mechanisms going on in their body, but I mostly choose vocal songs that are appropriate for the student's ability and goals. With more advanced students, I tend to pick more challenging pieces, or I help them work on the pieces they bring to me.

Outstanding Piano instruction!

My son has taken piano lessons from Ms. Kott for over 3 years now, and we cannot say enough about her. She is that rare combination of encouraging, enthusiastic, yet serious teacher that you hope to find for your child. Not only has our son learned the basics, he has also learned theory along the way. She is reliable, relatable, and a great gauge of their personalities. I would, and do recommend her to everyone. In fact, this year my younger son has started lessons too! I have always been a self-studier in my entire life. Being able to learn with just books and your brain is a crucial skill to have! However, I know not everyone (and sometimes even myself) have the discipline and motivation to keep going during hard times. This is where a tutor would come in handy.

I enjoy tutoring and helping other overcome problems that I have encountered myself because it enhances my own understanding and makes me happy that my self-studying is helping others. Sometimes, my students even bring up alternative ways of thinking that I have never thought of before!

Aside from academics, I enjoy playing the piano. I also play the occasional volleyball and improv theater.

I enjoy the creative challenge of teaching to each individual student’s wants and needs. I take an integrated approach to technical development, ear training, theory and songwriting/composition, giving students ways to play as well as understand the music they love.

I work with both children and adults, primarily those who are at the beginning or early intermediate stages of their musical development. In my own practice, I focus chiefly on jazz, and have found that many of the skill sets used in jazz (learning by ear, improvising), when coupled with more conventional teaching methods, can accelerate the process of learning piano, making it more fun and creatively rewarding for students.

Although people tend to perceive piano as a “classical” or “jazz” instrument, some of the most compelling pianists today are drawing from hip hop, rock, and every other genre of music, each with their own set of skills to teach. Though I offer a firm grounding in the classical tradition, I seek

About Mark
I studied music and comparative literature at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a city with a thriving music scene. Shortly thereafter, I left for another city with a thriving music scene: Chicago. I play primarily within jazz and improvised music contexts, but have also performed “new music” (or contemporary classical), rock and all manner of popular musics at such venues as the Triple Rock in Minneapolis, Elastic Arts in Chicago, and Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn, Illinois. When I am not teaching or at the piano, I run live sound for a local venue and write for a number of publications on music and aesthetics.

I love breaking a complex process like writing or music-making apart into its constituent parts and working together with the student to put the pieces back together again.
