Joe is great! I'm a complete novice and he started me out at the very beginning. He's patient and willing to teach all different types of music, as well as recommend songs that are good for beginners. He's also completely understanding when scheduling conflicts mean I have to miss a week or two. I'd recommend him to anyone!

Kathryn K.

San Rafael, CA

About Kathryn

If you're an actor or singer have always known you're suppose to be one or you're ready to move forward as an artist and you need one point more of confidence for everything to come together let’s make it happen. You can learn to act no matter where you are! I work in LA, SF and virtually.
If you need to understand how to make sense of yourself in the Industry, I can help you.You deserve a place in the biz if you want to be in it and you deserve a place in my studio. Here, anything is possible. I'm not going to crush your dreams. I'm going to give you technique, a system and a strategy so y
ou can do what you love. We will work on audition prep, monologues, scenes and find out who you are in the biz. If you're a music artist, we will discover the truest you and we will work on your songs and sets and your performance. I have been in show business my entire life. I am generous with what I know. And I know a lot. I learned it by working very hard. And I studied like mad. I still do. I have a resume, references, all the bells and whistles, and I care about the craft. And I care about artists. The artists I develop, work. They are signed with agents and they usually join the unions, which I like very much. I am a member of SAG/AFTRA AEA and have been for many years.
I've worked a lot and studied at Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music (CCM). In New York City I was under the care of opera teacher, Leona Matthews, famed acting teacher and director, Word Baker and Edward Morehouse as a student at HB Studio in NYC and Mark Monroe in San Francisco and Los Angeles. I still have my own writing doc, the revered Dr. Joyce Block. I work as a recording artist and writer. And I’m lucky to work as a concert artist, too.
I want you to experience this thing we call show biz. I love it so much. Call me. I cannot wait to meet you.
More about Kathryn
Kathryn began teaching in the late 80's in San Francisco with Mark Monroe, beginning Mark Monroe Studios. MM Studios began originally at Look Talent with genius talent agent, Joan Spangler. She and Mr. Monroe packed their studio, by word of mouth only, and when the studio totaled six hundred and fifty actors, they added a studio in Los Angeles. That was in 1993. Kathryn has been coaching actors and musicians and developing artists ever since. She has been involved in the industry her entire life and has a passion for it. She most recently has been working in Los Angeles and San Francisco on her own show that had the good fortune of being awarded a residency at Berkeley Reps The Ground Floor.
She also works as a songwriter and singer and her latest release is with renowned Grammy award winning producer, Narada Michael Walden.
Her students follow suit, working constantly, winning awards, signing with agents, joining unions, and enjoying the perks of being active in showbsiness as gifted artists. Kathryn loves passing the torch to young artists and she s thrilled to be able to do so.

Travis H.

Los Angeles, CA

About Travis

I grew up in Los Angeles and went on to attend the University of Redlands .While at University, I played in the University Orchestra and a variety of other ensembles. In addition to violin, I also studied jazz guitar, so classical music is definitely not the only musical style I am familiar with.

I am lucky enough to study with Tamsen Beseke, who is a member of the LA Opera and a prolific session musician. I have also studied with Jeanne Skrocki, who is currently the Concertmaster of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra and the Assistant Concertmaster of the Pacific Symphony.

My musical exp
erience with violin is not confined to classical! I also have experience with other styles, including Irish folk music and bluegrass. While classical is my bread and butter, I can take a more rounded approach in terms of exposure to musical styles if desired.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching lessons emphasizes making a friendly connection with my student. In my experience the student will learn the most when he or she feels comfortable asking questions and communicating with the instructor. I want my student to have fun and feel like progress is being made!

For beginners, the very first thing we go over is proper posture and bow hold. From there, we will move on to musical examples and basic violin techniques. I also incorporate basic music theory concepts into my lessons as needed. I have a strong grasp of that topic, and can teach my students more about it as necessary.

The materials I use include Suzuki(my favorite), String Builder, Laoureux, among others. I learned from a variety of materials in my lessons, and I find that great results come from using the best parts of multiple sources of materials.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio: lessons are taught in the living room. The student is expected to provide his or her own violin. Music stands are available. Parking is on the street.

Local Park: the lessons are in the community recreation center in a separate rehearsal room.

Seating is available at both locations.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide all printed materials, but I ask that my students to have their own violin.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Blues, Folk, Bluegrass, Gypsy Jazz

Travis is a cheerful, talented tutor who never fails to provide great, practical and simple to follow lessons which additionally are always fun to participate in. He's remarkably positive, and already I feel as though I have come on in leaps and bounds doing things with the violin that would have taken me an age to learn by myself. I hope that I continue learning with Travis for a long time to come.

Travis is a wonderful, kind hearted, and patient person with an inspiring passion for music. I have been a colleague of his for years and I can honestly say that he is very good at addressing different learning types, and catering to the unique needs of each student. His positivity and high energy make a great learning environment. I would highly recommend Travis to anyone interested in learning more about music in general as well as playing the violin.

Travis is an excellent teacher. As an adult learning to play an instrument with absolutely no prior experience he was incredibly patient and instructive. I'm looking forward to learning more with him. He's also very friendly and I felt very comfortable.

Sheila M.

Sherman Oaks, CA

About Sheila

Sheila M. is a native of Southern California, born and raised in the city of Palm Springs. Her interest in music began at the age of seven when she began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, she began playing the flute. Sheila received her Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where she studied flute with Sara Andon. There, she performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During her third year at university, she studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hu
ngary.

Sheila has performed in many different venues around the world such as Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, the Edinburgh Trade Center in Scotland, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, CA.

In 2013, Sheila graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Masters degree in Flute Performance where she studied flute with Sandra Kipp. At CSUN, she performed in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Northridge Flute Quartet, and various chamber ensembles. She currently resides in Los Angeles and teaches private lessons in flute and piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I am available to teach both flute and piano lessons and have taught both instruments at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels, though I prefer to teach piano at the beginner and intermediate levels the most. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

My guarantee is that the student will learn to read music and have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons, but little joking here and there is always necessary, in my opinion!

That said, here are my three expectations from my students:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just make sure that you learn from those mistakes so as not to make the same ones and grow from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and sometimes sitting in on the lesson to take notes so that you can work on what we did during the lesson at home with your child. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano (not a keyboard) in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

Sheila taught my son flute for the academic year 2013-14 in our home once per week. She was able to supplement instructions with what he was doing in school music. She had a great relationship with him and he looked forward to his lesson every week. He improved greatly in his music skills over the course of the year and was asked by Sheila to perform in a recital at the end of the school year. Sheila was a very good music teacher and her academic training was clearly reflected in her teaching a great plus! I would highly recommend her for flute lessons.
