Carol W.

Santa Monica, CA

About Carol

I have taught voice for over twenty years. I studied music at University of California, Santa Barbara, where I received my B.A. I currently work as a professional singer for various local opera companies, music theater groups, churches and temples. I am principal soprano for Opera A La Carte and have also soloed with Repertory Opera Company, Redlands Bowl Festival, Laguna Beach Chorale and Celestial Opera Company. I have worked extensively in Los Angeles schools performing musical assemblies for students in elementary and middle grades through Southland Opera, LA Opera and Guild Opera of South
ern California. My teaching experience includes private voice lessons and master classes at Idyllwild School for the Arts.

*** Lesson Details ***
I emphasize breathing techniques to free up the voice to expand your range and ease of singing. In the lesson, we start with simple warm ups and vocalizes and then apply techniques to the songs you want to sing. I realize each student is different and I customize the lesson to the student's particular needs. I specialize in classical and music theater, however the basics of singing apply to all styles of music. In addition to working on breathing and technique for singing, we'll also focus on interpretation of the songs you are working on as well as how to overcome performance nervousness. Most students find that they are able to sing with more freedom, less tension and will have more confidence as they progress.

I also teach beginning piano, using the John W. Schaum series.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the main room, upright piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
They need to provide a piano or keyboard if I am going to their home.
I have a piano in my home.

*** Specialties ***
I work on using the breath as a fundamental technique for singing. Singing should never hurt. I use a lot of imagery to achieve freedom in singing.

Travis H.

Los Angeles, CA

About Travis

I grew up in Los Angeles and went on to attend the University of Redlands .While at University, I played in the University Orchestra and a variety of other ensembles. In addition to violin, I also studied jazz guitar, so classical music is definitely not the only musical style I am familiar with.

I am lucky enough to study with Jeanne Skrocki, who is currently the Concertmaster of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra and the Assistant Concertmaster of the Pacific Symphony.

My musical experience with violin is not confined to classical! I also have experience with other styles, including Iri
sh folk music and bluegrass. While classical is my bread and butter, I can take a more rounded approach in terms of exposure to musical styles if desired.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching lessons emphasizes making a friendly connection with my student. In my experience the student will learn the most when he or she feels comfortable asking questions and communicating with the instructor. I want my student to have fun and feel like progress is being made!

For beginners, the very first thing we go over is proper posture and bow hold. From there, we will move on to musical examples and basic violin techniques. I also incorporate basic music theory concepts into my lessons as needed. I have a strong grasp of that topic, and can teach my students more about it as necessary.

The materials I use include Suzuki(my favorite), String Builder, Laoureux, among others. I learned from a variety of materials in my lessons, and I find that great results come from using the best parts of multiple sources of materials.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio: lessons are taught in the living room. The student is expected to provide his or her own violin. Music stands are available. Parking is on the street.

Local Park: the lessons are in the community recreation center in a separate rehearsal room.

Seating is available at both locations.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide all printed materials, but I ask that my students to have their own violin.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Blues, Folk, Bluegrass, Gypsy Jazz

The best music teacher!!

My 11-year-old son has been taking violin lessons with Travis for a couple months now and loves it! Travis always has a smile on his face, comes on time, and is professional. My son had zero experience with this instrument before; so it was important for me to find a teacher who is patient, and Travis definitely is. He has a good sense for when his students are ready for a little push or need some extra attention in some spots. I highly recommend him!

While studying classical techniques, she also taught herself other genres of music which enabled her to play, record and perform with musicians of almost every genre by 19.

Carmen has been taught and trained by many professional working musicians of impressive musical carrer heights Her former opera/ vocal coach Shonie Lebie attended The Julliard School on a full scholarship before going on to The Metropolitan Opera House. Piano teacher Shoshana Ben Horin, a graduate of Prague Conservatory of Music and concert pianist, toured all of Europe before instructing Carmen in piano. Carmen has learned cello and other string instruments from professional working musicians here in Los Angeles.

Zach R.

Los Angeles, CA

About Zach

I have been teaching trumpet, music theory, jazz harmony, jazz piano, and music composition to students of all ages since late 2008. I work very well with young, beginning students as well, and can teach all levels.

Working at UCLA for my degree in music performance has taught me what it takes to be a good teacher, and I am patient, understanding, and believe there's no greater feeling than watching my students flourish. I like to take the time to get to know my students, and plan lessons around their individual needs, rather than plug them into a system set in stone. I have a routine I do
, that I will start students with, but am very open to modification based on student needs/desires.

I perform jazz professionally in Los Angeles, and have spent time touring in playing in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Macedonia, Canada, and have performed or led groups internationally at the Umbria Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Tuscia Jazz Festival, the Angel City Jazz Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival. You can hear my original compositions and playing at soundcloud.

Jon has been an excellent instructor to my 11-year-old boy. Aside from his personal passion in Saxophone, he is also an distinguished performer. As a parent, and especially for a beginner student, Jon's passion and patience will only foster if not inspire a young and curious saxophone learner.
