Winner of the 2017 Outstanding Musician Award at Bloomsburg University, Steph is excited to teach students of all ages who want to improve their playing! She wants to help students learn and improve their fundamentals: tone, articulation, sight-reading, posture, etc. She would also be delighted to teach a student who is an absolute beginner! We will work out of flute methods books, etude books, and/or specific repertoire picked by the student.

August 2015

Hello! My name is Steph and I can't wait to hear you play! I will absolutely enjoy teaching you regardless of your age or playing ability. :)

Beginner students: We will mostly work on pieces out of Kathy Blocki's flute method books as well as exercises composed by myself to make sure your fundamentals are solid from the beginning. Plan on learning new notes and rhythms each lesson as well as having scale and playing assignments. You will learn a lot each week while having a super awesome time :)

Intermediate students: We will be working on honing the fundamentals (tone, technique, articulation) through various etudes and intermediate solo pieces, depending on playing level. Vibrato will be introduced as well as phrasing, breathing, and everyone's favorite: intonation! Weekly assignments will include memorizing scales and preparing all pieces covered in lessons. Prepare to take notes and laugh frequently at my jokes!

Early-Advanced students: We will learn about body awareness and work on playing without tension. We will work on developing tone colors (warm, sweet, bright, hollow, etc.), developing technique through daily exercises, as well as further developing the fundamentals. We will work on repertoire for your auditions, more advanced solo pieces, etudes, and technical exercises. Weekly assignments will include practicing at least 45 minutes per day to have material fully prepared for the lesson. You will get really good at taking notes!

Always remember: You will get out of lessons what you put into them! The magic always happens during practice. The more you practice, the more I am able to teach you, and the better you will play!

A little bit about myself: I am currently pursuing a master's degree in flute performance at the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. I recently graduated summa cum laude with honors from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music, where I focused on flute performance. Upon graduating, I have been freelancing in PA where I play in pit orchestras for musicals, solo recitals at churches, and chamber orchestras for formal gigs. I maintain a studio of 12-15 flutists of all ages and abilities, and I have taught hundreds of lessons (and loved all of them!) I have studied many major classical works as well as modern works with extended techniques. I was principal chair of Bloomsburg University's Wind Ensemble and Concert Band for three years, and I was actively involved in the New Music Ensemble. I would love to help you improve your playing and I cannot wait to teach you :)

Phi Kappa Phi
Apr 2016

In 1897 at the University of Maine, ten senior students, two faculty members, and the school president created an honor society that was different from the few others then in existence-one that recognized and honored excellence in all academic disciplines. Under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann, the group formed the Lambda Sigma Eta Society, which was later renamed Phi Kappa Phi from the initial letters of the Greek words forming its adopted motto: Philosophìa Krateìto Photôn, "Let the love of learning rule humanity." Phi Kappa Phi's mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."

I had Stephanie as a tutor in music theory all the way through my theory classes in college, and she is a great help. She is very friendly and extremely patient, and helped me come out of my shell and feel comfortable in my theory classes. I cannot stress enough what a wonderful bright person she is, and how great she is at what she does! She is an extremely intelligent and qualified instructor, as well as being a brilliant flutist.

Stephanie is an amazing flute teacher. I have some music experience, but I could never seem to get a single sound out of the flute. Steph found methods that worked for me and helped me learn how to finally make a sound! She is patient, encouraging, and really made me feel like my progress on the flute was important to her. I completely recommend her to anyone of any level.
