About Billy D.
I am a professional trombonist/guitarist living in New York City. I recently finished my Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance at the New School For Jazz and Contemporary Music. I have a lot of performing, touring, and teaching experience, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium and Zankel Hall), Dizzy's Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, Smoke Jazz Club, and many other venues around the city. I have several guitar and trombone students, but include music theory, composition techniques, and ear training into my lessons as well. I have experience in a variety of different styles of music. I really enjoy sharing my love for music with my students, and my main priority is making sure that my students' learning experiences are as efficient and enjoyable as possible.Show More

Billy does a great job teaching both the instrument as well as the music theory. He keeps instruction interesting by practicing songs students enjoy. He is also extremely flexible and patient.
Great teacher. Very kind, easy to understand, and covered quite a bit.
Good focus on fundamentals with lots of tricks of the trade for newer players..very patient and helping my son focus on results. Very happy!
Billy is a great teacher! He was able to take my background in piano and apply it to the guitar really well. Within just a few weeks I could play a song! 100% recommend.
Billy is a great teacher that makes sure that you have the skills to continue playing guitar. I enjoyed his lessons and learned a lot! He is really nice too.
highly recommend Billy.
Billy was great with my 12 year old son.
Very patient and conducts the lesson based on strengths and weaknesses in order to form well balance student. 5 stars.
Billy is great! He is super patient with me and really tries to make sure I understand the basics instead of just memorizing chords. His style is very easy-going and engaging. I definitely recommend Billy as a teacher, especially for beginners.
Good instructor recommended!
Billy is a great teacher, he knows his stuff and teaches really well. He helped me get through an audition for my school Jazz band and I'm learning so much from him.
My experience having Billy as an online guitar instructor over the past several months has been excellent! In regards to jazz playing he has helped me to focus on understanding how songs are structured, the relation of chords to each other and ideas for improvisation. He encourages developing a deeper understanding for the music and is patient when explaining new concepts. I would highly recommend him as a guitar teacher :)Show More
This was my first lesson ever and Billy was extremely patient, took the time to teach me music theory. Looking forward to the next lesson.
Billy is a very good and patient teacher. He understands that it takes time to learn something completely new (which for me is music theory) especially when besides the lessons you also work full time. My previous teacher didn't have that patience which makes me value Billy's approach even more. He will do his best for you to understand whatever topic you're struggling with. Highly recommendShow More
This past month I have been taking guitar lessons with Billy. I really love it! He makes guitar seem less intimadting then I thought it was. He is very patient and he seems to really care about teaching. I highly recommend.
Billy was really kind and patient with my 8-year old son and did a great job helping him to convert from the French solfege system of music reading.
Being a beginner (guitar) I attended my first class with a positive mind and no set expectations. I left class joyous, as Billy mastered to introduce me to guitar theory in such a simplified manner, which made it easy to grasp. I attended my second class last week, and feel that I have advanced/internalized greatly in such a short period. Further, I appreciate that Billy has always been prompt to attend my inquiries. Based on the aforementioned experiences, I look forward to my upcoming classes, and I’m very curious to know the end result - without hesitation, I'm certain it will be positive. Billy is a very gifted guitar teacher, hope he can teach for many years to come - as many can benefit from his great talents.Show More
I cannot say enough about Billy. At first I wasn’t sure what to expect. Billy put me at ease immediately. I find him professional, friendly and extremely considerate. He also tailors each lesson to his client. I wanted to delve more into theory. Billy knows his stuff across a spectrum of instruments. He wrote music for me and gave me the building blocks for more skills. I can see Billy really loves music and teaching. It shines through every time I see him, and that makes me more hopeful. I’d say that’s as much as you can ask for a teacher.Show More
Billy's approach to ear training really helped me a lot! He went at my pace and made references to popular song a to hear chords that, without context, are hard to hear. He accommodated to my way of learning and went from there. I still use some of the methods he's taught me till this day!Show More
Billy is the absolute best! Transcribing rhythms and ear training analysis have always been my weaknesses when it comes to music theory knowledge and finding the right exercises and techniques to improve has always been quite a difficult process to achieve. However, within just a few tutoring lessons from Billy, I started to build a better understanding of music theory as a whole. In every tutoring lesson, Billy was patient, knowledgeable and friendly which quickly benefited my musicality and strengthened my overall friendship and love with music. Thank you Billy!Show More
I've never played Guitar before and since trying to play, I have met so many teachers, none of them really helped and were impatient, but having had Billy as my instructor, I have picked it up so quickly. Its only been a few weeks and I'm playing my favourite tunes. I highly, highly recommend! Very sweet and patient teacher, i'm still taking lessons with him :)Show More
Billy is a gifted musician who is patient and explains everything clearly for a novice. Really enjoying my lessons
I'm a classical trombonist by training and reached out for help with jazz theory and playing. Billy was an amazing resource who helped me develop concrete playing and practicing skills and become a more confident improviser. He was extremely patient and thorough and took extra time to make sure things would stick. Highly recommended!Show More
Billy is a great teacher! He really knows a lot about Theory and he really helped me in detail with how to get something right. I would recommend Billy for any teaching job, he's really great! Thanks Billy! :)
I played the trombone when I was a kid but lost interest back then. After not playing for about 15 years Billy helped me to get back to it. We covered reading notes, learning a little bit about music theory (keys etc) and of course playing. I wanted to practice with some songs I like and Billy was able to write the notes down for me. This was super helpful and really made me enjoy playing the trombone again! We practiced in a room in the New School, which was cool since I could play as loud as I wanted, compared to back at home where I usually use a mute. He was very patient and friendly and I can highly recommend him as a teacher.Show More
