About Alysia
Having taught piano and flute lessons for over 15 years in the North Shore. I have had the pleasure of working with students of all ages (3 - adult), both beginner and advanced.

I enjoy teaching students the "classical music" repertoire. I also strive to give my students a solid foundation in music theory and history in order for them to truly understand and appreciate the roots and structure of the music. In addition, I want my students to really love playing music and so I strongly encourage my students to also learn to play music outside of the classical repertoire. I believe balance is key, so I generally teach students to play classical music as well as music from other genres (such as film music, pop music, video game music, holiday music etc).

*** Lesson Details ***
Each student is a unique individual with different learn
ing preferences, goals, musical tastes, and body mechanics. In contrast to the "cookie-cutter" teaching method (a uniform teaching method utilized for every student), with each student, I design an individualized lesson plan that not only accommodates the student's needs, but also nurtures their overall appreciation of music.

I do not demand perfection from my students, but I do expect students to at least put in the effort to learn. I truly want to teach students how to play the piano or flute and I want to encourage students to find joy in making music. The methods I typically utilize include: (PIANO) Faber & Faber Piano Adventures, John Thompson Piano Course, Bastien's Piano Literature, Suzuki Piano (FLUTE) Suzuki Flute, Standard of Excellence book 1, Andersen etudes for flute.

Throughout my piano and flute career, I have competed in numerous music competitions and prepared for several music auditions. If you wish to have your child enter in competitions or prepare for any music auditions, I would be more than happy to help!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Glenview Location: I have a Boston baby grand piano, a flute, a metronome, and sheet music (piano & flute repertoire).

Evanston Location: I have a Yamaha Keyboard (equipped with weighted keys, all 88 keys, pedal, and a built-in metronome) and my flute.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students MUST have a piano or at least a working keyboard (for piano lessons). For flute, students MUST have a functional flute and a music stand. For the first lesson I can decide what music is needed and the student can then go out and purchase that music. Students should also have a working metronome.

*** Specialties ***
I enjoy teaching all styles and genres of music. I enjoy traditional western art genres, but I can also teach pop music, show tunes, as well as video game music.

About Hristo
I've been teaching guitar professionally since I've been 17 and I've taught a wide range of musicals styles from Jazz, Blues, Fusion, to Rock you name it. My first experience with the instrument was 8 years ago and since then I haven't put it down. Early on in my teaching career I found that it's important for students to have the drive to learn, but it's more important to have someone that can guide them in the right direction. I believe the role of a teacher is not only to instill that drive, but to fuel the fire of their imaginations through fun and effective exercises. I've had the pleasure of teaching students ranging from 5 to 60 years of age and have found that the fundamentals of playing are applied across the map.

I'm currently attending Columbia College of Chicago and I'll be receiving my bachelors in instrumental performance
mid May. I've studied under some great players such as Frank Dawson, Harry Hmura, Chris Forte and currently studying under Peter Lerner.

*** Lesson Details ***
I understand what it's like to be in a tense environment where all the material is condensed and thrown at you in a set amount of time. I'm not an advocate of such curriculums. I promote an atmosphere where a student isn't afraid to ask questions and feels the need to express his or her thoughts on whatever we may be learning.

I've come to the conclusion that everyone learns differently and different avenues need to be taken in order for a student to learn. I feel as though every student needs a customized lesson plan that will help them excel. We're all attracted to music in one way or another so I feel the need to tend to what attracted you to playing and writing music in the first place. For example if you like classic rock we will explore certain techniques, ideas, songs and song structures that pertain to that genre. I like to partner you're interests with basic fundamentals of music such as note reading, music theory, and listening exercises. The goal is to keep progressing and learning new things.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upstairs studio: guitar rig set-up, studio speakers, pro tools set up, recording gear, practice amps, music stands, chairs, additional seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide an amplifier, cable, tuner, sheet music and even a guitar need be. I expect my students to provide themselves with a guitar so after the lesson and during the week they can practice the material I have provided them with.

*** Specialties ***
I like to start out young students with reading music along with teaching them and exploring the music they are interested in.

Hristo is patient and full of passion for music. He is very knowledgeable and capable of imparting this knowledge well on children, as he has done thus far with our 10-year old and 6 year-old (first full month of lessons). He is flexible and even came to our house for the lesson when our schedule for that day was affected by another commitment.

Its going well thus far and our sons look forward to the lessons every week.

This guy loves what he does!

Histro is always on time and is very knowledgeable. He is a college grad that can teach you soo much. I've never played guitar before and after my third lesson with him, I already know 12 chords and am capable of playing at least two songs. A very relaxing way to spend my sundays. He makes it fun to learn the guitar!

About Marissa
My musical journey started in high school when my algebra teacher saw me in the hallway, grabbed my hand and brought me to the choir room to sign up for The Sound of Music auditions. To this day I cannot believe my math teacher unknowingly sent me straight down a path that I would walk the rest of my life. After The Sound Of Music I never left music. I kept singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When it came to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion and I wanted to make a life of this. When you wake up everyday and the first thing you do is sing at that point there was no other way to live. There I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I found that I am a vocal scientist
at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow. Being a vocal scientist, I find it so interesting to know what exactly needs to happen when we sing in order sing in a healthy and beauitful manner.

While I was at Moraine Valley after I firmly choose music I felt I needed more of a diverse program so I can answer any possible music based question. I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education. Their program intensely teaches all the band and orchestral instruments on top general education classes and your major, mine being voice. While I was there I also took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further develop my ear and knowledge. All in all I have been studying the voice for 11 years and counting. I do all this so that I could pass that experience down to you.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I like to teach vocal techniques such as raising your soft palate, correct breathing techniques, and a forward placement. These are the tools to help a vocal musician grow for the rest of their lives.

Another part of being a vocal musician that I teach in every lesson is ear training and or rhythm. These are things I wish I would have learned earlier on and are essential to being an independent musician.

I like to keep a more uplifting environment when teaching so although you should expect a push for success, you should always feel comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the studio room, electric piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide literature and a music stand while the students should have a full length keyboard and or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I teach rhythm, sight singing and ear training, general musical terms, as well as specific vocal techniques.

I have been studying and performing music for 20+ years. After majoring in music at College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn IL, I went to step up my level of study at the Percussion Institute of Technology (P.I.T.) at Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA in 2001 attaining a Performance Certificate from my time studying there.

Moving back to Chicago after L.A. in 2002 proved to be the right move as this is when I began my teaching career. With 13+ years of private and group music instruction experience, I have worked with Hix Brothers Music, Naperville Music, Roselle Music, Streamwood Park District, Roselle Park District, Schaumburg Park District, After School Enrichment Solution's Guitar Stars, Band For Today, Guitar Fundamentals, Chicago Guitar Instruction, Schaumburg Music Academy, Music Makers of Western Springs, Clarendon Hills Music Ac
ademy, and also maintain a private clientele. Well into a thousand lessons taught, students have stayed with me for up to 7 years. You, the student, will gain all the experience I have gained from my 20 years of study, performance, and instruction.

Performing with various bands in the 2000's, I pinpointed my style and mastered my technique that gave me many performance opportunities regionally and nationally, noting most current act U2 tribute Vertigo USA.

I am co-founder of the music licensing production company Blue Shade Music, co-writing with astute musicians in the Chicago area for music libraries in Florida and California currently.

With national and international touring experience, I was featured in an exclusive interview for Online Drummer in August of 2011 sharing my knowledge and experience of music and drums.

Thank you for reading, and I hope to have a fun and educational time with you!

Steven is a great teacher! He's flexible, and works well with all ages! He's teaching my 3 kids, drums, guitar and bass. He's very receptive and adjusts his lessons according to what my kids are interested in. For example one of my kids was learning notes, but then the other wanted to learn a specific song and he easily adjusted to focus on what each of them wanted to do to. My kids love him!

Isaiah grew up in a family of teachers and musicians. After beginning to teach himself piano, his mother quickly enrolled him in private lessons at the age of 5. Following his two older siblings, he joined the school band on saxophone in the 4th grade.

Over the past decade, Isaiah Sanderman. has played in countless classical, jazz, and modern ensembles on multiple saxophones. In high school, he performed in musicals, led the saxophone section in marching band, and was the top saxophonist in the classical and jazz ensembles. Graduating with recognition as an Honors All-State musician, along with the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award and John Phillip Sousa Band Award, his path as a professional was set.

Presently enrolled at Roosevelt University's Chicago College of Performing Arts, Mr. Sanderman studies and performes music of the highest caliber. Playing flute and saxophone in the school's Large Jazz Ensemble and Brazilian Combo, he has been the youngest and most-featured soloist under the direction of world-class pianist Marshall Vente and world-class guitarist Paulinho Garcia.

Outside of academia, Mr. Sanderman has had the privilege of performing with Zoofunkyou and leading the pop/funk horn section in Minor 9ths to sold out shows at House of Blues and other local venues.

Mr. Sanderman also explores his interest of the art of practice on his website, CollegePracticing.com, where he has interviewed numerous college students on their practice habits, as well as working professionals with degrees from such esteemed institutions as Berklee College of Music, Indiana University, and Northwestern University.

As a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Berklee College of Music, I attended the most prestigious contemporary music school in the world. I was exposed to so many amazing styles of music and rubbed shoulders with the most incredible musicians you can imagine (and performed alongside them)! I have taken my experiences and knowledge from Berklee and infused it into my teaching style. I do use Suzuki method because I believe it is an excellent foundation to work upon, but I also think that jazz and contemporary studies are a great way to expand one's horizon and learn about music in an entirely new and fun way!

Mary is passionate about playing piano and teaching others her craft. She takes an individualized approach, tailoring each lesson to meet the needs of her student, carefully adapting her teaching style to what type of learner you are, which she will determine at the onset. What I love about working with Mary, is that she lets you choose what songs you want to learn and supplements those with materials at your level. She follows along at your pace, asking how many songs you want to work on at any given time. She is thorough, offering helpful critique and praise when due. She writes detailed instructions in a notebook, which she gives you to take home to refer to when practicing on your own. Mary composes her own music, and when you hear it you will be astonished by its beauty, her talent and skill. To be able to take lessons from such a gifted musician is an exciting thing!
