The main thing that I like to remind students of, when they take lessons with me, is that music is FUN! A lot of hard work goes into it, but the end result is always rewarding! I am a pretty laid back teacher, yet I still work to inspire my students to try their hardest and to be the best that they can be at what they do. It is very important to me that my students get their musical wants AND needs fulfilled.

For cello, I take the standard approach; getting to know the instrument and assigning various exercises so that the student will gain technical fluency, and building repertoire. Although I am not a certified Suzuki teacher, I do use some of their methods, since I, myself was a Suzuki student. I like teaching the student memorization of pieces, so that they can focus on technique and expression within a given piece.

In my cello lessons we will work on a variety of topics, including:

-Gaining a feel and command for your own instrument.

-Finding your SOUND: Helping you ...

About Makala

I have loved music as long as I can remember. I know its cliche© to say so, but it's true! :) For me, having parents of different ethnicity and siblings that were much older than me, I was heavily impacted by the wide variety of music to which my family members listened. The force of this crayon

My 9-year old daughter needed a help with musical audition prep in last minute. Since we moved to another location, Brad was recommended by one of the CYT teachers we new at the previous location. As soon as Brad started the lesson, he knew exactly what was needed to be casted in a show. We only had two lessons before the audition, but his key point lessons were good enough to get a roll in the show for my daughter. We will definitely seek for Brad for next audition prep.

As an educator, I strive to provide my students with the tools that they will need to explore the direction that they want to take with their instrument. This can include from enjoying drumming as a hobby, performing in small jazz ensembles, recording electronic and acoustic drums in major recording studios, to performing with a full orchestra! There is literally no limit to what you can do.

My focus is to get hobbyists to enjoy performing drums in the comfort of their own home or with friends, and to have my professionally-minded students go out into the world of performing and recording music. All of these environments are where the ultimate joy of playing an instrument can be expressed.

As a gigging and studio musicians, I understand what it takes to get to the stage or studio, apply oneself in that environment, and come away with a satisfying experience that you can then build upon for the rest of your life.

About James

Hi! I have been a drumset educator for over 3 decades. I benefited from formal education on the drumset, and I want to pass that along to you so you can experience the full joy that this wonderful instrument can bring you! I understand that each student's journey is specific to them as an individua

Jim has been a fantastic teacher to our son. He explains everything patiently and approaches his lessons very systematically. He selects songs that incorporate essential drumming skills (e.g. songs that include doubles, paradiddles, accented notes, etc.). This way, the the student is able to develop an understanding of how theory fits practice.

"I'd say Kevin is by far the best teacher I've ever had for acoustic guitar. I'm left handed, which require a special technique of instruction. I'm also well up in my years and have always wanted to learn guitar for my own enjoyment. He's patient with me, which is great, and is very fair with the time he provides for the cost. He goes the extra mile to assure I gain confidence and fulfillment with my playing. I have plenty more to learn and I only want Kevin because he teaches in a sincere and meaningful way. I'm going to start singing with my playing and am very excited about that. Kevin is awesome!!! He's genuine. I highly recommend him to anyone, at any age."

"I first met Andrew when I joined the Temple University Diamond Marching Band. Andrew was the trumpet section leader and breath tech, and he made it his goal to ensure that everyone in the section could improve as much as possible by focusing in on the aspects of each individual's playing. In addition to knowing a lot about the trumpet and trumpet playing, Andrew was exceptionally friendly to everyone he worked with. He was always willing to offer advice not just about trumpet, but life in general, and he has greatly contributed to my trumpet playing and attitude towards life. I would recommend Andrew to anyone looking to improve their trumpet playing."

"A Winning Combination

About a year ago, actually 13 months, I began voice training with Daniel Kotval. This is not my first go-round with voice training. During the twenty-or-so years I was studying and performing as a dancer I also studied voice…on and off. All told, I worked with five instructors who used a wide variety of teaching styles and techniques but I never felt that any of them gave me any really useful tools. I never felt that any of them truly taught me how to use my voice properly, to achieve the best results and avoid injury.

That was many years ago. In the interim, I’ve done plenty of singing – mostly for my own entertainment – but there’s been little improvement in the quality of my voice. I’m not certain what it was that made me suddenly decide it was time to work with a professional voice coach but decide, I did.

Once I’d discovered TakeLessons.com (the top result of my Google search for voice lessons in my zip code), Daniel was the obvious choice. We share Columbia College Chicago as an alma mater, and when I saw that he’d been on the faculty that was all the credentials I needed to see…and I was not wrong.

In addition to teaching the mechanics of proper breathing, posture and of course singing, Daniel places strong emphasis on music theory. You’d be amazed at how helpful it is to understand the theories behind everything; it makes all the knowledge crystalize so much faster!

As a teacher, Daniel is endlessly patient and supportive, always inspiring me to push ahead even when I feel frustrated. His teaching techniques work well for any student of any age at any level of experience, from rank beginner to accomplished professional, and voice training is not all that Daniel does. He teaches piano, guitar and bass, percussion and brass, and much more. A few months ago, we added piano to my curriculum. I’ve learned more from him in one year than I learned from five instructors over a period of many years, combined.

So far as I’m concerned it’s a winning combination: voice, piano, music theory, and Maestro Daniel Kotval."
