Arnell B.

Park Forest, IL

About Arnell

I've always loved to sing from my earliest remembrance along with a love for the piano and a desire to play. I attended Academy of Our Lady - High School where I took four years of piano as well as vocal instruction. I performed with a group called The Madrigals as a 'high soprano' during those years. I further attended Wheaton College, attained a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in music. I was educated musically through Wheaton's Conservatory of Music. I studied piano, voice, theory, music history, music appreciation, and sight singing to name a few. I auditioned, performed, and travel
ed with the Women's Glee Club.
Since then, I served as the worship leader in church setting. I was responsible for music selection, accompaniment, and vocal coaching for our worship team. I've also worked as a facilitator in an after school program. There, I worked with students on an individual as well as group basis. I led a youth choir that traveled and performed for local nursing home residents. I also taught music appreciation and a fitness/movement class incorporating various genres of music.
Throughout the years I've had may opportunities to work with students one-on-one in piano and vocal instruction and performance. Overall, I am very passionate about music. Whether its listening, singing, playing or helping someone develop or grow in their talent, I simply love it!
Now, I'd be honored to work with you. I am comfortable working with beginners to intermediate in both piano and voice, ages 5 and up. As partners, this is a dual effort. I will do my best to find and utilize the most effective ways/methods to coach and assist you in reaching your piano or vocal goals. I will expect you to give your best effort consistently to get there one step at a time.

*** Lesson Details ***
When it comes to lessons, I am a pleasant, approachable person. I enjoy laughter and believe it is a healthy response even when things are difficult.

In piano, I can help you learn the basics of playing such as note recognition, scales, chord formation, ear development and form a foundation that you can build upon progressively. In voice, I can help you develop good breathing, posture, tone, diction and expression. I am excited to work with whatever singing style that interests you most. Opera is my only exception at this point.
I offer training in classical music to use as a foundation for any other genre of music that interests you.

In general, I prefer to use well-balanced methods that incorporate theory along with the mechanics of learning. I believe in using tools, games,or aids that make learning fun, especially for the young beginner. The method used will depend upon the goals and needs of the student.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the living room with a piano and seating. No pets. Parking in driveway or on street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I do not travel with any equipment - except books/curriculum as needed.
I expect my student to provide a lesson notebook, and equipment, piano, microphone, amplifier as required.

*** Specialties ***
Genres - Classical, Contemporary Christian

Wow! What an experience.

Arnell is a brilliant instructor.she is motivating, exciting, fun,. creative and very informative.she is a miracle worker. Arnell has done wonders with our 3 children.before they started the piano and singing classes with Arnell, my husband and I realized that it would be very difficult and very challenging for our 8 year old son to learn the piano, seeing that he was diagnosed with a learning disability. to our amazement we were very pleased to see our child, our children reading musical notes and playing the piano fluently in such a very short time,it brought tears to our eyes. Yes my family is very blessed to have Arnell as a piano and singing instructor.

Marissa V.

Alsip, IL

About Marissa

I started my journey with singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When I got to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion. Then I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I am a vocal scientist at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow.

I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education so I was able to learn all the band and orchestral instrumen
ts on top regular classes and voice lessons. I took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further develop my ear and knowledge. All in all I have been studying the voice for seven years and counting. I do all this so that I could pass that experience down to you.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I like to teach vocal techniques such as raising your soft palate, correct breathing techniques, and a forward placement. These are the tools to help a vocal musician grow for the rest of their lives.

Another part of being a vocal musician that I teach in every lesson is ear training and rhythm. I like off switch off every week so not too much time is taken away from the piece we are working on. So one week we would focus on rhythm and the other ear training. These are things I wish I would have learned earlier on and are essential to being an independent musician.

I like to keep a more uplifting environment when teaching so although you should expect a push for success, you should always feel comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the studio room, electric piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide literature and a music stand while the students should have a full length keyboard and or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I teach rhythm, sight singing and ear training, general musical terms, as well as specific vocal techniques.

While my son has only taken a few lessons with Marissa, we highly value her instruction. She's prepared, focused, and personable. My son isn't only learning to sing a song. He's learning the art of vocal training. It's amazing to hear his development in only 3 lessons so far. Marissa is definitely a great teacher.

Gwendolyn F.

Harvey, IL

About Gwendolyn

I began playing the piano at the ripe old age of 3 on a toy piano I received for Christmas. My parents began my formal lessons the following Spring with a private teacher who stayed with me until I graduated from High School. I was awarded a four year scholarship to the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago by my church to continue my studies. I added Voice to my studies there. I went on to study Orchestration, Conducting and Theory at I.S.N.U., Drama at C.T.C. upon returning from I.S.N.U and began to develop my Production Company in the early 70's. Since then I have produced numerou
s productions showcasing the talents of young and old while I pursued my Corporate career in Administration. My private students range from 5 years to 87 years although currently I specialize in teaching Seniors how to fill their retirement years with music. After running a Senior Community Center for several years, I realized a lack of artistic outlets for Seniors and began encouraging those who attended my Center to take up an instrument. I have had the joy of teaching many Seniors how to surprise their mates with beautiful music after only 6 months of lessons.

As for the younger generation, it is a proven fact that many children do better in school after learning to play an instrument especially the piano. Fine motor skills, hand and eye coordination and physical strength in hands and arms is also enhanced with the study and practice of the piano more so than any other instrument. Many piano students discover other talents and go on to participate in talent shows, school performances, and church pageants. The fun of being able to sit down and make music for your own enjoyment is almost as much fun as playing for the enjoyment of others. I look forward to continuing to share my love of music and the skills to play for yourself with students from Take lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
For Adults we discuss their goals and I come up with a plan that we can both agree on to get them there within reason. For children and all beginning students I start with the basics. We learn the keyboard, and the corresponding notes on the music staff. Treble Clef, and Bass Clef become new words in your vocabulary. After you learn your way around the keyboard and the Music Staff we start on the next important part of music, rhythm. I use a variety of percussion instruments and recorded music to teach the various time signatures depending on the age of the student. This makes it more relevant and enjoyable when they can relate to the music they listen to everyday and pick out the time signatures, By now you can read music even if slowly at first, and the addition of rhythm makes it more fun to play. This usually happens within the first six months for children, and the first three months with Adults. Practice is essential , and I recommend that each student practice for 1/2 hour increments up to 2 hours a day depending on their age. I also use scales to help improve dexterity and strengthen the fingers. Students are recorded to track their progress and for me to listen to their lessons and spot problems for correction. I also work with performers in perfecting their stage presence and audition skills. With today's opportunities to become overnight stars with just a video, you want to maximize your chances in any way you can. As a producer of many shows and concerts, I can help make that happen for you.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide the percussion, recorder and recorded material.

Student: Purchase recommended material. Provide your own instrument, and computer or lap top if possible . Internet access not necessary but helpful.

About David

I have enjoyed singing from a very young age. I went on to major in Vocal Performance in a Conservatory in New York and have performed as a vocal soloists in opera, musical theater, oratorio, and many choirs and ensembles.

I have 7 years of vocal training, directed choirs for 11 years, and have taught voice for 4 years.

David is my vocal coach and has trained me to techniques that I have never been taught. He has greatly expanded my range and has allowed my voice to rehearse for hours without strain.

He teaches not only with words, but with visual illustrations.

I highly recommend David's skills for beginners to advanced soloist, as well as a Vocal Coach to accomplished singers.

Miriam arrived right on time, prepared and ready to go. She worked with the space I had, and was very patient. As an adult beginner, learning something new can be intimidating, but she made the lesson very enjoyable. I'm looking forward to next week!

Our family cannot speak highly enough of Miriam-Rose and her talent and teaching ability. She is still, by far, our 10-year-old daughter's favorite IU student violin teacher. Miriam-Rose has such a gift for being an incredibly patient and supportive teacher, yet she is firm and affective in her corrections. Our daughter learned so much in just the short time she was instructed by her. She is such a caring, friendly and fun person with lots of energy, and you can tell she loves what she does by the way she teaches. She will be a blessing to any student she instructs. We have two other daughters that also know her from the ballet world and she is known there as well for her talent, teaching and friendliness, which I think speaks volumes for the individual that she is. She is just an all-around wonderful and talented person who also happens to be a very gifted teacher. Students of any age will learn so much from her! We so appreciate what she has done for our family!!
