If you like singing or vocal expression, you are welcome to join my studio. I teach using a simple, direct, effective, easy-to-understand, holistic and scientific method. The aim is to freely express the natural and style-free voice, which can be applied to any musical style or vocal field with ease, energized and flowing breath, solid technique, resonance, projection, diction, range and poise. My students come from diverse backgrounds such as opera, musical theater, jazz, pop, R&B, bluegrass, country, rock, heavy metal and public speaking. Depending on the goals of the student, lessons may include physical warm ups, breathing exercises, vocal exercises and technical work, solfeggio, ear training, and musical / repertoire / reading work. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to learn from Bulent. I have no prior experience in music and decided to take voice coaching lessons so I can begin singing in my church. Bulent clearly has a vast knowledge of music and patiently taught me the fundamentals which I found very valuable for a beginner like me. I learned so much from the first lesson and was so motivated I immediately signed up for weekly sessions. Despite his many accomplishments and impressive music career, Bulent was down to earth, patient and friendly which made for a session where I felt more comfortable and more receptive to learn. I am very excited and optimistic to see how my voice improves over time!

I studied with Bulent for about eight months and only stopped because I moved across the country. This is the first formal voice training I have had. I was immediately impressed by Bulent’s deep knowledge and passion for music. My first class was quite unique, in that he spent a lot of time going over the anatomy of all the organs that are used when one is singing. I found that foundation very useful when working on different aspects of my voice. The classes consist of two parts — fundamental training and repertoire building. Bulent observes the student and gives instruction based on performance. He will also assign exercises for the student to do while at home; these are important because they are helping to train the relevant muscles. Bulent’s instructions are very detailed and personalized, and most importantly they come from a place of love; it is rare to see a teacher so in love with both the field of music as well as the people he encounters. This love provided an exceptional setting for being able to focus on learning the truths of music, without fear of judgement or ridicule. Not only did I improve my vocal abilities while training with Bulent, my awareness as a singer also grew tremendously. That awareness allows me to help myself improve while I practice on my own.

Gregg was my musical instructor during the early 1980ties. What I learned in a few lessons with him was more that I could have expected. I was primarily focused on percussion, of which his vast knowledge was highly dynamic. I learned about poly-rhythms, Indian ti-hies, and complex time signatures. He had available much reference material that he provided me. And over the years his musical insights have not only supplemented my inquiries, but made me a better musician and person. I am one of those individuals for whom teaching is just something that I have to do. I started giving music lessons sometime in the 80's and have loved working with all levels of skill and experience. My students say that I am patient, adaptive and encouraging, committed to making music fun.

I have a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles, including pop, rock, gospel, traditional hymnody, jazz, and R&B. Although I love and study classical music, it is not something I teach at this point.

In addition to private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. Bil Mooney-McCoy is a life-long Boston resident who has been playing music all his life. Having served as a church musician for more
than 30 years, I am currently the Director of Worship for the chapel at Gordon College, a small Christian school north of Boston. I'm often involved in city-wide music events in Boston’s faith-based community and in demand as a featured musician for church services, parties, concerts and other events.

I hold a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles. My priority as a teacher is to make the learning process fun, life-giving, and productive. I teach with patience and humor, at a challenging but not frustrating pace.

There are at least two ways that might set me apart from other teachers.

Firstly, I have honed and developed "people skills". I am an ordained minister and have held positions where I was formally and informally in a mentoring/pastoring role. I bring that sensitivity to my music lessons, understanding that personal and emotional issues can be triggered by the engagement with the music and skills being worked on.

Secondly, I've had a remarkable broad base of experience. My coursework has exposed me to a wide breadth of ideas and tools; my work life has been long and varied; I have had extensive experience in many different cultural contexts, both musically and otherwise; and I work well with many age groups and skill levels.

Regarding my teaching approach:
For beginners, I have a fairly consistent set of topics and skill sets to cover. Generally, in a few months, piano students (particularly those in middle school through adulthood) should know how to play major, minor and seventh chords, how to read simple chord charts and some very basic accompanying skills. Guitar students should know a dozen open chords and have been introduced to barre chords, and to have learned several styles of finger picking as well as strumming. Bass students should know how to find notes on the board and will have begun to learn how to fill out a song with an expressive but non-obtrusive bass line.

For intermediate students, the pace, direction and focus on lessons depends upon the goals and passions of the student along with the amount of time he or she has to practice. My goals for students at this level and beyond is to learn how to learn. I will use outstanding recorded examples of particular skills or stylistic idioms to help my students understand and master each new concept. I often will check in with my student to make sure that we are on track with what they are hoping for.

For advanced students, we will generally target very specific objectives. I also try to add elements of theory, history, culture, and even life lessons to apply to the topics we address. Because of my background in pastoral ministry, I can serve as a mentor addressing the emotional and relational issues of playing music as well as its technical aspects.

I studied music performance at UMass Dartmouth. I have the tools and resources to teach the students what they need to know in order to teach themselves. In lessons, I focus on what the student wants to learn, however for younger students I tend to stick with the methods books for a while.
I am a big fan of applying relevant elements of music theory to the music we're learning: it helps to understand the science behind the music. Noticing patterns and understanding common terminology will make it easier to learn pieces and play with other musicians.

Beau is patient and kind, and yet persistent and focused with my 8 year old daughter. She has major anxiety issues and is often both frightened by new people and hyper sensitive to correction. Beau navigates her through her fears and shares his love of the music. She has had half a dozen lessons now, and we fully intend to continue lessons with Beau.

I've been an artist in many different capacities spanning many different mediums including theatre, film, and music as a teacher, director, actor, writer, and production/project manager. I am currently pursuing my MFA in Theatre Education at Boston University in the fall. I also h
ave received a Master's Degree in Theatre Arts from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and a Bachelor's of Science in Film and Television from Boston University. I currently teach at the college level such classes as Speech Communications and Acting & Performance 1. Both classes address the needs of non-theatre majors, and help find entry points into the work that help introduce them to the medium and introduce skills that are applicable to their own work and life. Specifically, we address confidence in public speaking, and how to navigate storytelling as a powerful communications and public relations tool. My most recent adventure was performing in Tony Award Winning director Darko Tresnjak's production of "Romeo & Juliet" at Hartford Stage. I will be performing in Jim Petosa's production of "Good" at New Repertory Theatre in October 2016. As a directed, I recently spearheaded Will Eno's "Tragedy: a tragedy" at the BU School of Theatre. And as a production manager, I've been working consistently with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company since last summer when I was associate production manager for "Romeo & Juliet", the free Shakespeare on the Common production.

PRESENTATION COACHING
These lessons have a wide range of applicability. Presentation coaching can be useful for corporate executives for in-house presentations within the workplace as well as speeches for conferences and other venues. I've also been helpful for students and teachers looking to improve their school presentation skills as well as their ability to have greater confidence in seminar settings. We will use highly accessible exercises to work on awareness, listening, textual analysis, and public speaking.

THEATRE AUDITION PREP
These lessons are suited to those who want to develop their ability to enter an audition room with confidence and charisma and get the job or role you've prepared for. The most important thing to remember about auditioning is that the people behind the table want you to be the right person for the job as much as you yourself want the job. These lessons will be most useful to those auditioning with a monologue or cold reading sides. If you are not working towards a specific audition, we can work on broad spectrum auditioning and mock auditions. These lessons are available to any age and experience level.

Hi! My name is Perry and I have been playing flute for over twelve years. I recently graduated from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York studying Flute Performance under the tutelage of Bonita Boyd. I have recently moved to Boston to begin my career freelancing and teaching before eventually pursuing Graduate studies. While at Eastman, I performed eight full solo recitals, demonstrating an eclectic range of repertoire from solo works, to unusual chamber pieces with interesting instrumentations, and concerti with full orchestral accompaniment.

From very early on in my time playing the flute, I pushed myself to compete festival auditions, competitions, and recitals. These experiences give me great insight for teaching younger students wishing to pursue flute competitively or more casually!

Over the course of my playing
career, I have experienced a variety of performance injuries involving my hands, arms, and torso. Through these experiences, I have gained experience in injury prevention and recovery relevant to flutists at all ages and levels. This has helped me develop more efficient and healthy approach to my own playing and greatly informed my teaching methods in the process.

My musical experiences make me well suited for teaching students of all ages to achieve individual goals. I loved the teaching I did as a part of the Eastman Community Music School and I love sharing all that I have learned with others! Being a very organized and structured person, I generally propose a steady practice regimen based on both long term goals and short term achievements! I also believe in letting students go at their own pace and constantly adjusting those milestones as required. I believe that the ultimate goal of any teacher is to give the student the means to teach themselves. Hannah was the music director at the Scotch Ridge Presbyterian Church in Carlisle, Iowa for the past three years, and was a wonderful addition to our congregation! I serve as the pastor of that church, and was always impressed with Hannah's ability to help not only plan the music for worship - this include weekly hymn selections - but also her incredible singing voice and vocal range. Dr. Mealey was the man who taught me my very first lesson on the tuba oh so many years ago. I have since had the privilege of performing professionally in over 40 states and 30 countries around the world as a soloist and as a member of Boston Brass. The years of private lessons I took with Dr. Mealey gave me the perfect musical foundation to eventually pursue my dreams.

I still remember how much he cared for every single kid in each of his bands. There are people who are put on this earth to teach and he is one of those. I can't imagine how my life would have turned out if it weren't for Dr. Mealey.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Mealey for fourteen years, first as a colleague and then as his supervisor. Bob is a very skilled musician and teacher. He has had many years of experience bringing his students' performance levels to new heights. He works hard and expects the same from his students. This winning combination has helped to create some very skilled musicians, with many of them going on to enjoy playing in ensembles for many years.

It was always a pleasure to watch Dr. Mealey and his students perform in concert. The looks of joy were always evident with everyone in the house - members of the ensemble, its director, and the audience.

Dr. Mealey had a tremendous impact on all of my children. He truly instilled in them a love of music and gave them an opportunity to really experiment and express themselves. Because of their solid foundation with Dr. Mealey, they played throughout high school and some even into the college level marching band! Dr. Mealey is a class act and knows how to connect with his students!
