Shae K.

Saint Paul, MN

About Shae

I am an music instructor with 23 years of experience. I have a Bachelor's degree in Sacred Music with a major in Voice. I have been playing piano for 33 years with having been an accompanist for choirs and soloists and a pianist at weddings and churches. I am a believer that anyone can learn piano and improve their vocal abilities! I also know that a knowledge of music and music theory go together to improve one's learning ability in any area of his/her life. The student and I would work together. I don't just teach the "how to", I help and encourage taking time at the lesson to learn an
d understand the music. I am a huge advocate of building the student's skills during the lesson time and using the rest of the week on their own to continue to review the skills they have already acquired. I look forward to being your teacher! We will have fun learning!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a friendly person and like to put everyone at ease. I try to adapt to each student's learning style. As I have hinted at in my bio, I teach the skills and then we work together on these skills during the lesson. The idea is for the knowledge and skills to come together before the student tries on their own. The student actually learns quicker this way and we repeat lessons much less. The student also desires to learn when they see those goals being attained at a quicker pace. I usually average one lesson book every 2-3 months, depending on the student.

*** Specialties ***
I have taught every method available for piano and have taught both Opera and regular singing methods.

Amy W.

Saint Paul, MN

About Amy

As I child I had an early interest in music, dancing and creative things. I took piano lessons and excelled at my chosen instrument, the flute, in band at school. I continued with my music training at Northwestern College in Roseville, Minnesota and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Music Education in 1992. I worked for 11 years in my profession in various settings before I took a break to start my family. My experience includes teaching students in classroom general music, choir, band, piano lessons, and school plays/musicals. I spent six years at a private school (grades K-8
), three years at a charter elementary school and 2 years at a public elementary school. Also, since graduating in 1992 I have spent a total of 16 years teaching private lessons both at Hovland Conservatory of Music and in my home. Along the way I further broadened my background by accompanying church choirs and congregations, playing for weddings, and volunteering to lead children’s music time at church.

I love music of all kinds and have a strong belief that everyone should experience the joy and power of it in his or her life. It is very rewarding for me to help students develop their skills as they discover a meaningful way of self-expression using a universal language. Teaching music is something I love to do and I know that fact reflects to my students resulting in an enjoyable experience for them as well.

*** Lesson Details ***
What can a student/parent expect from lessons with me? I can provide my students with a solid foundation of proper technique. This is so very important because you do not ever want to have to unlearn bad habits. I also include appropriate music theory, ear training and improvising for each level. I purposefully pace the lessons to prevent students from feeling frustrated. Instead, I work to generate excitement about the learning process and keep students motivated by their own progress. Furthermore, I am willing to accommodate a student if they have a special interest in a certain musical genre or a personal goal they are working towards. I encourage, but do not require students to take advantage of recital and performance opportunities that I provide.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Large music room: piano, flute, clarinet, mouth pieces for trumpet, trombone, french horn and sax, snare drum

*** Specialties ***
I have a lot of experience teaching students who are brand new to their instrument. I believe the beginning is a very important time to start building a solid foundation for all future musical growth. I love being able to help my students establish good habits from the beginning and influence the overall direction of a new student’s musical experience.

I love music of all kinds and have fun playing and teaching all the instruments that I listed. However, the two instruments that I have the most training on and have performed on are the piano and the flute. I would be a great teacher for private lessons to help a student excel in band at school or for a high school student preparing for contests or auditions. Also, I am very patient with beginners and would be ideal as a child'€™s first piano teacher or for an adult who has always wanted to play a certain instrument of his or her choice.

We only had one lesson with Amy, but I was impressed and I give her a 5. She was very patient with Josh, even when Josh wasn't very focused. I was impressed with how she conducted her lessons, even though her children were home. They were very respectful of our lesson time and never had an interruption. That says a lot about Amy's dedication to focus on her students.

Beau J.

Saint Paul, MN

About Beau

Hello,
My name is Beau. The bass guitar is a great passion of mine and I am excited to share my knowledge and experience with others. I am eager to teach as well as continue my own personal journey as a musician. Initially self-taught, I attended McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, MN where I earned a degree in Bass Performance studying under Terry Burns, Gary Raynor, Jay Young, Jeff Bailey, and Charles Fletcher.

I have been performing professionally in various original and cover/variety/wedding bands for over 6 years. I also have extensive studio performance experience constructi
ng and recording bass lines of many different styles. My band, The Fontanelles, have been successfully writing, recording, and performing original music in the Twin Cities for the last three years.

I am the weekly bass player for the contemporary and traditional worship services at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, and have also played bass in musical productions of Footloose and Godspell. People know me for being passionate, energetic, patient, and friendly.

*** Lesson Details ***
All students can expect to have a positive and fun, but focused and educational learning experience.

Beginner students will learn to navigate the fretboard, technique, pitch matching and ear training, scales, and learn to play bass lines and melodies to favorite songs.

As a student progresses, they will learn chord recognition and relations, music theory, more scales, more ear training, sight reading notation and chord charts, improvisational techniques and building walking bass lines.

*** Studio Equipment ***
-Fender 62' Reissue Jazz Bass
-Ampeg BA-15 (amp)
-Fender BXR-25 (amp)
-Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver
-Electro-Harmonix Bass Micro Synth
-MXR Bass Octave Deluxe
-Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner
-Boss RC-3 Loop Station
-Yamaha MO6 Keyboard
-MacBook Pro
-Protools
-RME Babyface for recording
-iPad with various teaching apps

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a music stand, amplifier, computer for musical playback and recording, my own bass or guitar, and a tuner.

Students should bring their own bass guitar.

*** Specialties ***
I find that developing a musical ear is vital as a student. To a student, I like to stress the importance of pitch matching and recognition, scales, chord recognition, as well as fingerboard technique. Students will learn to improvise walking bass lines, solo over various styles of music, sight read, and develop a personal repertoire.

As a player, I began playing rock, but am also passionate and experienced in jazz, funk, country, latin, pop, etc.

Also, you may be asked to sing sometimes! I believe in the importance of using our own natural instrument as a tool for musical growth in all areas (especially for bass players). You can practice music virtually anywhere when singing.

My daughter enjoyed her lessons with Beau because he has a calm demeanor and extensive knowledge of music theory and electric bass technique. Every week she showed progress as she learned songs that were gradually more and more demanding. She also benefiitted from learning theory: modes, how to play scales in each key, as well as ear training and identifying song key. We would highly recommend Beau if you are looking for a bass teacher for you or your child.

Colin M.

Saint Paul, MN

About Colin

*Lessons with Colin have moved to an exciting new location! A recently finished home music studio now features two full drum kits, a P.A and sound insulation for a quality learning experience!

I am a 29 year old drummer with 20 years of experience spanning all genre's and styles of music. Countless hours of stage performance with bands. A love, drive and passion for music and drumming you won't find in any other instructor! Multiple studio recordings both behind the mixing board and behind the drum set. 10 years of teaching experience, realizing the importance of setting a unique curriculum
for each student tailored to fit each individual's goals and interests. I have been involved in bands ever since middle school, starting with rock, and moving on to perform in country bands, hip-hop performances, indie rock bands, and progressive rock bands. A strong knowledge of jazz techniques and music theory as well as the ability to read drum sheet music make me a perfect instructor for any student.
I have had many beginner and intermediate level student's and have become proficient in determining what skills each individual student needs to work on as well as helping students progress in their interests, keeping the lessons fun and the student motivated. I can easily transcribe any song as well! So any song you might want to learn, even if there is no sheet music, is totally doable. I love working in odd time signatures and I prefer fancy hi-hat work over heavy double-bass drum use. Progressive / Indie rock is my favorite genre of music to play, but I have tons of fun playing hip-hop, punk, metal, I dabble in jazz, Latin rhythms, and pretty much anything else. I'm always excited to play drums, and I pass this excitement on in my teachings.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons and curriculum's are built around a students experience level, age, and goals. Students will learn the fundamentals of drumming, as well as the ability to add flair and pizzazz to their playing. Within the first 3 months, a beginning level student will have the ability to play basic beats found in many styles of music, as well as feeling comfortable playing to a metronome and keeping time. Lessons will include routines to be practiced by the student on their own time, as well as fun, exciting techniques to keep students interested and motivated to continue playing.
Each Lesson will hold its own highlights depending on the student. I believe getting to know the student and their goals for their drumming is one of the most important aspects of teaching lessons. Understanding whether the student is looking to drum as a hobby and for fun will change the lesson style dramatically compared to a student looking to make a living off drumming. The types of routines, styles and techniques taught should fit into helping the student reach their desired destination.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the basement, full band rehearsal set up with 2 drum kits, one for the student, one for the teacher.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to have a drum set and drum sticks. I can provide a drum set for lessons but it is important for the student to have a drum set or practice pad to practice.

*** Specialties ***
I have touched on almost every genre of music. I am currently studying Latin jazz, I specialize in progressive rock.
