Valerie N.

Biddeford, ME

About Valerie

I like to tailor my teaching style to my student's needs, so you can progress at your rate, with your kind of music. I can teach pop or classical, whichever you prefer. What's important is your having fun and making progress.

*** Specialties ***
Although my favorite is classical music, I'm very happy to work with whatever genre suits you. I also like to include a reasonable amount of theory, if you'd like. I do try to explain the relevance of theory to the music at hand, and how it can help further understanding of the piece, often making it easier and more fun to play.

Benjamin G.

Sanford, ME

About Benjamin

I studied jazz performance & classical music at USM and studied jazz piano with Charlie Banacos.
I have been teaching since I was 15 years old through the state's Gifted program and qualified for both gifted in fine arts as well as the general IQ requirement.
I currently have students ranging from the age of 4 to 78 years old, most of which are in the range of 6-17 years old. I have undergone background checks with Tune Town music in Wells, ME. since I started working there 6 years ago.

I have had great success with many students resulting in some deciding on music as a career and going
off to college specifically for piano.

I have had experience teaching people with special needs ranging from autism to ADD, and also sometimes with what I consider great success. (Achieved fundamental music literacy and one such student progressed into the 3rd level John Thompson book after 2 years.)

Currently I teach at Tune Town in Wells, ME. as well as privately in Sanford, ME. And perform in the greater Portland area.

Alicia Phelps has an amazing knowledge of music, particularly jazz piano, vocals, songwriting, improvisation, and music theory. It’s an inspiration to play with her together on improvising exercises because she can make anything you do sound great! She has a fabulous rapport with students, young and old. (My daughters and I all take lessons.) Most importantly, she makes music fun even while she is stretching your mind, fingers, and heart to discover new territories and capabilities. – Lindsay Sterling
