About Joao
I believe that anyone can learn an instrument and, even more importantly, that everyone can enjoy the process of learning music.

I lived in Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany, and in Boston before moving to New York. Moving around so much has brought me in contact with all sorts of people and cultures and has allowed me to grow as a musician and a teacher.

My teaching philosophy draws from different traditions: Socratic teaching method, Buddhist techniques of intense focus and self-kindness, Frederich Wieck school of lyrical expression, and the detailed science of Body Mapping.
As a graduate of Berklee College of Music, I place great emphasis on relaxed technique, ear training, and the use of contemporary repertoire along with classical pieces.

My first degree was in English and French linguistics and literature. I later ded
icated myself to scholarly research and completed a master’s degree in History at the University of Amsterdam.

Eventually, I decided it was time to do a rigorous program at one of the best music schools in the world so that I could perform and teach music at a high level. I graduated from Berklee College of Music with degrees in Performance and Film Scoring.

I teach online and normally in my Brooklyn studio. I am currently in Orange County, CA while at University of California - Irvine.

Some of the highlights of my time in New York:

I was awarded an arts grant from the New York Department of Cultural Affairs and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council for my performance and composition work.
I was commissioned by the organization MyFace to develop and implement a program for artistic expression through music, movement, and storytelling for children and adults with facial differences.
I worked as an accompanist and music director for shows and dance classes at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Whatever your goals are with music, I can help you get there! Get in touch any time to tell me about your goals and aspirations.

If you're reading this, you are very lucky because you've just found the most amazing music teacher!
Our son has studied piano with Joao for the past four years. He started with Joao when he was six and continues to this day. He loves Joao. Joao is a patient, intuitive and adaptive teacher that provides incredible instruction, in any music genre. He honed in on our son's musical interests early on, making learning piano fun and interesting. We often say, Joao is not just teaching our son piano, he is giving him a music education, introducing him to an array of amazing pieces from different genres. He's a rare talent both as a teacher and musician. We feel incredibly lucky to have found him. You will too!

I studied jazz piano with Joao for over a year. In my time working with him, I learned a tremendous amount. Joao is both an extremely talented musician and a skilled instructor. He clearly cares a great deal about his students and their progress. He was always patient (especially during weeks when my practicing had been slow) and both encouraging and supportive of my efforts to master new concepts in jazz. Joao has an excellent sense for what his students want to accomplish in their musical explorations, and an ability to tailor his lessons to the student’s unique goals. He has an impressive knowledge of both the history of jazz and music theory which makes him an incredible resource for learning about the jazz idiom. Last but not least, Joao was very personable and fun to talk to, and I always a enjoyed working with him. He is an outstanding teacher.

Hello! My name is Madison, but I go my Madi. I love the piano and the beauty and creativity it allows as you learn more about it. It may seem intimidating at first, but it will soon become your best friend. As you come to learn your favorite songs on the instrument, a fire you didn't know you have, will ignite inside you, and I would love to be that person to watch it grow.

About Chris
My name is Chris Collier and I am a professional musician here in Nashville, TN that is available to teach guitar, bass, and mandolin either online, in your home, or at my studio.
I love music and seeing people grow, so getting to teach students how to engage in something that is so dear to me is an absolute joy. I have been playing music for over 10 years and teaching private lessons since 2014. My professional performance experience includes solo guitar gigs, rock band shows, musical theatre pit work, dance band playing, plus various gigs in Nashville, around the Eastern United States, and even in Scotland!
I do my best to make lessons relaxed. I don't ever want a student to be nervous for a lesson with me because they did not practice as much as they think they should. While I encourage as much practice as possible, I car
e more about a student realizing the positive force that music can be in their lives; music doesn't need to be a stressor.
I graduated from Belmont University in the Spring of 2018 with a degree in Commercial Music, so I have had the "conservatory training" in regards to theory, and music history, but before college I was largely a self taught player and am now a professionally performing musician here in Nashville. My primary goal with any student will be first to help a student achieve their goals, but ultimately to teach each student to think for themselves on their instruments so that they can go on learning for the rest of their lives.

Chris is patient, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and flexible as an instructor. Even after only three sessions, I feel more confident in my playing and am beginning to understand musical theory that I hadn't understood when I began practicing guitar on my own. Chris has been great at blending theory lessons with technical lessons; he's also balanced well honing previously taught skills and learning new ones. Excited to learn more!

Chris is a super chill guy. He knows what he's doing. He studied guitar in college and it really shows. He'll help you learn whatever it is that you're trying to get down, or if you're not sure where to start, he'll start you where he thinks you will benefit. I enjoy our lessons and I highly recommend him as a teacher.

About Gabriel
I started playing drums when I was in second grade and formed a band with my 2 older brothers who played bass and guitar. It was something to do when we younger but when I got into high school, I took playing drums a lot more seriously. I was in a very competitive marching band playing bass drum and tenors in the drumline and at the same time, I was introduced to jazz drumming. The improvising aspect of jazz drumming sparked my love for it because the freedom it gave me to express myself was something drumline could not do. After getting state recognition for my playing in jazz bands, I transferred to a high school with a more intensive jazz program. I am currently a jazz studies major at California State University, Sacramento. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

Melynda Burdette Wintrol has been my teacher, my role model, my director of education, and most importantly one of best adult friends, and one of my many mothers in this business even though she loves being referred to as “the cool Aunt” for almost 5 years now. At age nine I went to ATMTC where Ms. Melynda was the Registrar, and I was a completely different person from the person I am today, I was shy and hiding. Through her guidance and training, not only has she skilled me in performance, she has made me the person I am today. I am no longer insecure with myself and actually love myself. Along with her incredibly wide range of vocal techniques, she is classically trained in Opera and can belt the heck out of any number you throw at her, she is a dancer as well in fact one of her special skills is her splits, but one of the best of her many many talents is she knows how to tie it all together with acting and tell a story. Aside from this she always wants everyone to succeed. She is what older actors call “the protective bubble” of the real acting world. She holds educational based auditions and she will calm you down if you are stressed, crying, or even breaking down. In a real audition directors would dismiss you. I’ve worked alongside her in professional productions as well and I can attest that there is no better teacher, nurturer, and friend in this business.

I'm an artist, educator, and scholar who uses a methodological, student-centered approach to help you achieve your goals. I teach music lessons and provide reading and writing tutoring to beginning and intermediate students. Here's some more specific info on each one of my services:
___________________________________________________________________________
Music Lessons:
After completing my undergraduate education at Santa Clara University, where I majored in flute and vocal performance, I freelanced as a music professional in the San Francisco Bay Area for three years. I then relocated to the University of Notre Dame, where I received a Master of Sacred Music degree in voice and directed a children's choir in the Notre Dame Children's Choir. I also taught percussion and competed as a marching percussionist for six years, winning the
award of "Best Percussionist" with the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets and leading my groups to successful competitions during the fall marching season and the winter indoor percussion season. I'm currently a freelancing vocal professional in Baltimore.

If you're looking for voice instruction, flute instruction, or you'd simply like to learn and hone music skills (like sight reading, rhythms, ear-training) from a high-level musician with a broad range of experience, please contact me!
____________________________________________________________________________
Reading and Writing Tutoring:
I have successfully tutored undergraduate and graduate students in reading and writing for over eight years. At Santa Clara University, where I received a B.A. in English, I was vice-president of the English Honor Society and tutored undergraduate students for first-year composition courses. At San Francisco State University I earned my M.A. degree in English Composition, a degree which focuses on the teaching of college-level reading and writing. There I served as a tutor for the English Tutoring Center and the Student Success Program.

If you're a beginning student looking for reading and writing tutoring where I teach you writing skills (like brainstorming, drafting, and editing) or an intermediate student who simply needs an extra pair of eyes to bring your writing to the next level, please contact me!

I look forward to hearing how I can help you reach your goals.
