About Laura
I am a mezzo soprano with a bachelor and masters of music degree in vocal performance from the University of Houston. I am pursuing a career in opera while teaching private voice and piano lessons,
During my voice lessons I like to focus on developing the student's voice through a classical approach. By forming a strong foundation in healthy singing the student will be able to sing in various genres without strain to his/her voice.
In my piano lessons I use the series of method books, Piano Adventures, developed by Nancy and Randall Faber. Through these instructions the student will learn to read music as well as establish a proficiency for playing the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
If you take lessons from me we will have fun while working hard. I develop my lessons around what I feel the student needs on that particular day.
In a
voice lesson we might spend the entire time on technique exercises to strengthen the voice. We might also work on several songs with an emphasis on interpretation.
In regards my piano lessons, I generally stick to the curriculum, but will take the time to focus on the individual needs of the student.
I expect my students to practice at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week. Everyone learns at a different rate, but if the student practices regularly, he/she will see progress within a few months.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have an upright piano in my studio as well as several music books. I expect my students to bring their music as well as their assignment book to every lesson.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in a classical technique when it comes to teaching voice. I focus on proper breath support and a relaxed open larynx to produce a free, beautiful sound. I believe a classical foundation can be applied to any musical genre, with the result that you are singing in a healthy manner that will not damage your vocal chords, thus allowing for a longer singing career.

I teach a vocal technique which is called singing on the speaking level, or "Singing with the ease of Speech". It provides the student with a systematic approach to link together all the registers of the voice-chest and head. The student and I work together to build a bridge between the low voice and high voice, (through the break) combining those parts in the middle creating "the mix" ( a blend of chest and head voice), that most singers struggle to master and the vast majority of teachers don't know how to teach or identify. This allows the singer to access all of his or her range without strain. A student would begin to experience positive results within a few weeks of study, both in the studio and with practice between lessons.

One of the best things about this technique is that it allows you to sing any style of music. Whether you sing Pop/R&B, Rock, country, musical theater, gospel, or opera, you can experience vocal freedom and confidence that every singer wants to have. As

About Charles
Charles, a self described spiritual vocal artist whose repertoire offers songs of faith, healing, hope, love, peace, harmony, and enlightenment. He has a flair for infusing familiar and beloved inspirational and spiritual songs with a fresh, smooth, and distinctive sensibility entirely his own. His self-confidence is projected with warmth, charm, and genuine love for his music.

He captures the essence and spirit of those classic singers that have gone before him and established a tradition of great singing€¦.Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, and Harry Belafonte, as well as the more contemporary sounds of Peabo Bryson, Wintley Phipps, Luther Vandross, Jeffrey Osborne.

He is in his element singing as a soloist for spiritual ceremonies, concerts, conferences, services and related events. His musical accomplishments extend to include perf
ormances at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City, The Jazz and Blues Company in Carmel, California, Houston Grand Opera, Opera Omaha, and the Houston Symphony as well as roles in musical theater with "Showboat" and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". Most recently, he performed for former first lady, Laura Bush and Peter Buffett, son of investment mogul, Warren Buffett.

As a singing teacher, Charles has taught voice both privately and within the public school sector for over 18 years. He received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Houston System and has studied extensively with operatic tenor, Joseph Frank and well known Houston vocal coach, Tom Mckinney. He has also taken masterclasses with world renowned teachers including Hollywood vocal coach, Seth Riggs.

Charles has served as a preliminary vocal judge for the popular "Gimme the Mike" singing talent TV show on NBC Houston, 97.9 The Box "Hatta's Idol", coached 2 American Idol Finalists, one Xfactor top 10 contestant season 1, and 2 semifinalists for the "Voice". He also served as a vocal coach for Beyonce's Music World Entertainment's Project Popstar, under the direction of Matthew Knowles.

As a life coach, I provide personal coaching for singers and musicians. This process involves helping a singer to first and foremost identify and understand why he/she sings, and what is the message they want to deliver when they walk on stage. In other words, what do they have to say?? From this viewpoint, they can create educational and professional goals based on their highest truth and life purpose. and address any issues that might be blocking them from achieving those goals. One of the major challenges that singers face are making career and life choices that will balance with their artistic or musical goals. In addition, it is very important to know your true gifts, passions, motivations and intentions. Moreover, having a realistic view and understanding of the recording business vs. the music playing business is essential to your overall business plan and success. You must also find the time and energy to pursue your art while making a stable and rewarding living. Lastly, if you are a creative type who is struggling with two common life dilemmas: the "starving artist" who is tired of panicking every time the rent is due, and the " well paid professional" desiring the time to devote to his or her art, then life coaching is for you

I began my singing career 10 years ago and deliberated at length as to whether or not I needed or would benefit from vocal lessons seeing as I already knew how to sing (or so I thought). After my first lesson with Charles, however, my mind was opened to a variety of extremely useful techniques and methods that have drastically improved my singing abilities and overall performance. Whether you're a seasoned professional or are just getting started, I highly recommend taking lessons with Charles. His upbeat, encouraging attitude made me feel very comfortable and capable and I look forward to my lessons each week. Charles is a 5-star teacher, musician, and singer hands down.

About Shakeatha
I have sung for as long as I could speak! I hail from a family of recording artists and have graced the stage since the age of 4. During high school, I learned to read music and took piano lessons. This peaked my interest in wanting to learn the fundamentals of music so I decided to major in it in college.

I then went on to Xavier University, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Music. While at Xavier I participated in many productions. I also received a Xavier University Music Scholarship for four years. I have noted my experience in detail: Xavier University of Louisiana-Senior Recital; Xavier University Student Recital – “Opera under the Stars”, April 2008; Xavier University Concert Choir Midwest Tour – Soloist for “Amazing Grace”, April 2008; Xavier University of Louisiana Student Productions - Treemonisha (2004), Purlie (2005);
Xavier University University Chorus; 2004-2009; Xavier Concert Choir; 2004-2009; Vocalist with Recording Artist: Josh Jones Nu Horizon, New Orleans, Louisiana; Vocalist with Recording Artist: Bishop Alvin Davis & Company, Baldwin, LA; Greater St. Stephan Gospel Choir and Praise Team; Background Studio Vocalist for Ebony Lockett (2009), Community of Faith Praise Team, 2012-2013

Currently, I sing at many venues and with various groups throughout Houston area. In addition to all of this, I also perform a great deal of gospel music on the praise team at the Community of Faith.

As you can see I have a great deal of experience and expertise different genres, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge with my students.

To my future students:

I sit down at our first lesson to make a Custom Lesson Plan for what you want to study and goals you want to achieve.

I want to help you reach your goals and make you happy as a singer, so I am open to teach you anything no matter how little/much experience you have.

Next, we will pick a fun area to work on, and a challenging area to conquer. For example: we will work on a fun song then we will work on reading and/or rudiments.
I am also very patient and flexible to those students whom have special needs, or need to accelerate at a slower pace.

I have been working with Mrs.Shakeatha for sometime now. I'll never forget my very first lesson, I was so nervous, for many different reasons, but without even trying she made the atmosphere welcoming, nonjudgmental, noncritical, and enjoyable. she is extremely patient, has never been rude, harsh, or critical, even within the past lessons. She is very professional, very intellectual (on many things, not strictly musically or vocally), very positive, very thorough, very loyal, and very helpful. She is able to coach at a professional level while still always reminding me to keep it fun, and to enjoy the process. She neither sugar coats nor over exaggerates, and has always had my best interest in mind. The months under her coaching I have been extremely beneficial and I have (and still am) learning so much. It's been a great experience, and I look forward to the years to come!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND VOICE LESSONS WITH MRS.SHAKEATHA , SHE IS A AWESOME WOMEN!!!

I have been teaching this subject for over 13 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Music is not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it may be selected from the western classical, musical theatre, and popular rep based on the student's goals and learning needs with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• the studio space is also inhabited by two lovely cats. Do consider this when signing up for lessons.

Janet is the most knowledgeable and technical piano and voice teacher I have ever known. She pushes her students to be the absolute best while encouraging them along the way in their gifts. If you're serious about learning and becoming the best you can be in piano or voice, without a doubt Janet is the teacher for you! She expects a lot from her students, but puts in even more on her end to prepare you to be the best that you can be. You won't find another teacher around who cares about her job the way she does! As a voice instructor with over 20 years experience in the private studio, college environment, church ministry, high school chorus master teacher, and as a free-lance performer, I understand that each student requires tools and techniques unique to their needs to grow and improve. Focusing on the basics of breath control, efficient support, and healthy vocal production, my gift of hearing and assessing each student's strengths and weaknesses allows me to create lessons catered to each singer's specific needs.

With a Master of Music in vocal performance from Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, an appreciation of various styles of music, and my personal investment in each individual singer, I am able to successfully share my knowledge of the vocal instrument and my love of music with my students. I am proud of my student success rate with many singers pursuing degrees in music at the collegiate level, winning competitions, earning roles in local and community ...

About Holly
As a professional performer, teacher and master teacher with a Master's degree from Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor's degree from California State University, Chico, I have performed with orchestras, chambers groups and choirs throughout the United States and Europe.
Comfortable in both classical and musical theater genres, my knowledge of vocal production and the musical skills needed to succeed in music make me an excellent teacher. I pride myself in having a great ear and instinctual understanding of each student's individual instructional needs.

Before relocating to Houston, I owned and operated a successful full-time private teaching studio in the Atlanta area with voice students succeeding in All-State Chorus, the Governor's Honors Program, college auditions, local competitions, community thea
ter, and school chorus auditions. As a successful soloist and vocal instructor, I pride myself in teaching proper technique, nurturing each student's vocal development, helping singers develop a true love of music, and gaining an appreciation of their unique vocal gifts. Many of my vocalists learn the skills of reading music by learning keyboard and basic theory through piano lessons, which I am also able to teach.

With a creative and personable teaching style, I am able to connect with each student where they need to be met. My students of all ages see an immediate improvement when applying the techniques that I share with them. Focusing on healthy vocal production, good breath support, and proper techniques of support and vowel placement, I am able to help students reach their musical goals through vocal exercises and drills, direct application to selected music, and assigned home practice between lessons. After learning the basics of vocal production, we can further focus on interpretive elements of the songs and students will feel the rewards of making beautiful music with their own free and unique sound.

I had the opportunity to study classical voice with Holly for 3 years in high school. She was not only a phenomenal teacher, but also a wonderful life mentor and friend. Once a part of many voice groups as a child, I grew to love instrumental music and sacrificed my singing career for the flute. When I decided I wanted to come back to the world of vocal music, Holly helped me find my voice again and gave me confidence not only in my talent, but also in myself. She taught me great techniques on how to open up my voice and adapted her teaching style as my voice continued to grow. An overall incredibly understanding and patient person, Holly is the reason I was such a successful soprano. She genuinely cares for all her students and is solely interested in furthering their vocal careers. If I had the opportunity, I would gladly be a student of hers again, any day.

My daughter was Holly's student in Atlanta for few years before she moved to Texas. My daughter loved her teaching style and gained a lot of confidence to sing in public.

I had the pleasure of taking lessons from Holly during my senior year of high school. She was always so warm and patient! It was evident that her knowledge and expertise in voice combined with her passion made her an excellent teacher. Specifically, Holly helped me accomplish getting a dream lead role in my school's spring musical, which I know I could not have achieved without her guidance and support throughout the auditions and play process. I truly learned so much from her in a short amount of time!

Vocals are up front in the mix. This means that mistakes matter more. There are a bunch of tiny corrections that can be made to almost every voice to make it more musical. Get your ears and mouth on the same page to stay in key!

About Sean
I have been fortunate enough to have had music in my life since I was a kid. I started out on the drums and since have learned to play piano, guitar, bass, violin, and ukulele. I understand fundamentals are important but believe that they are second to having a good time and cultivating a personal musical identity. I have many influences ranging from Garth Brooks to Ed Sheeran and almost anything in between. I would love to get you playing some of the songs that started the musical spark inside of you!

As a musician with twenty-three years of experience I take a classical approach to teaching voice and piano. I have been teaching privately for four years and enjoy teaching genres including contemporary, jazz, opera, and broadway.
I am a coloratura soprano with a BA in music from California State University Stanislaus. I have preformed with the Houston Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Townsend Opera Players, Modesto Symphony Chorus, and Northstar Community Opera.
All of my singing students are taught that singing begins with proper breathing, good posture and a lack of tension. From there we discover what your unique voice sounds like and together we will shape it to into it’s optimal sound. My main approach in teaching voice is to cultivate vocal growth in a healthy way.
All piano students will learn basic music theory, how to read music and music composition. I use the Faber books, but I am always willing to adapt my teaching to my student's needs. When studying music, I find that

I have also been fortunate in getting to play Margot in The Merry Widow, Pitti-Sing in The Mikado, and Spirit II in The Magic Flute with Townsend Opera. I sang with the Houston Symphony Orchestra Chorus for three years and Modesto Symphony Chorus for four year. I have enjoyed composing music for several local theater groups and enjoy writing my own music.

Ally gave my daughter piano lessons and was fantastic! My daughter started when she was 7 and quite unsure of herself. Ally was very patient and encouraging, helping my daughter grow in her musical talent as well as her confidence outside the studio. Ally's music book collection covers both classical and pop music which helped to keep my daughter engaged. I would recommend her to anyone!

As someone who hasn't been very comfortable singing, Ally has been absolutely wonderful in getting me to be more comfortable with my range. She is very knowledgeable about quality techniques to not only not strain my voice but to have clarity and intonation. She is very patient, nice, but also a perfectionist, which is great because I do not want mediocrity.

She has prepared me for audition pieces and continues to follow up on each one to build my repertoire.

Highly recommend for any one who is seeking to be more comfortable with their voice or help with auditions.
