I've had experience working with both beginners looking to sing for enjoyment as well as coaching aspiring professionals to refine their craft and move ahead with career goals! I tailor lessons according to your goals while also helping you discover and fulfill your maximum potential. I establish and maintain a calm, safe space for us to explore your voice without pressure or judgment, and encourage your insights and creativity.

I also emphasize the importance of overall musicianship for singers so that they have deeper understanding and appreciation for their musical selection. This can include learning to sight sing, transposing songs to your correct key, accurately communicating preferred tempo and rhythmic feel to other musicians, writing charts in order to work with live bands and so on.

About Rachel

A graduate of Duke Ellington School for the Arts and the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Rachel Panay is a 6 time Billboard Club charting singer/songwriter in the Dance music genre. She recently returned to her musical theatre roots appearing as Rose in Theatre Lab's production of The Secret

Rachel has taught our son since first grade; he's now in third. She's tailored lessons to his musical taste (the Beatles) while providing a strong foundation on which to build. She's been very flexible and accommodating throughout the switch from in-person to remote lessons, and he really enjoys the time with her. Knowing that so many kids are motivated by short-term goals, she's planned even more recitals during this remote time than when they were solely in-person, and that's been a great motivator for our son to practice.

It is with deep regret that I have to report that Rachel was clearly INTOXICATED during her lessons with my children today (ages 14 & 11). We will not be using Take Lessons again. There is no way an app can sufficiently vet all these teachers. Please don’t put your children in danger and learn this lesson the hard way like we didi.

I’m Juan Falguera. I’m a voice teacher from Buenos Aires, living and working in the DMV area. I’ve been studying and performing music for over 20 years. I’m a guitarist, singer and voice teacher specialized in a voice method that is called Functional Voice Method, also known as Rabine Method in honour of it’s creator Maestro Eugene Rabine.

Voice health is essential and the cornestone of this pedagogy. Understanding our physiology and anatomy and how to reach a balance in wich the vocal cords can work with no extra stress or tension.

In a normal lesson we usually start with a couple of simple vowel excercises. This gives us an opportunity to see how our instrument (our voice) is at that moment.
From that observation we follow with some excercises applied to a more specific aspect of the voice. Sometimes we will focus on breath control, sometimes in posture, sometimes in pitch, sometimes in lower or higher notes. By the end of the lesson we can sing more complex excercises ...

I have been a student of Juan Manuel for five years. He is an excellent teacher, I took face-to-face and currently virtual classes.
He provides a space where to learn, always listening to the needs that each one goes through in different stages. Supported by the rabine method, it guides you towards a better performance when singing, with clear guidelines that allow you to organize and optimize your voice.

Broadway Singing is my passion! I've played piano on Broadway for 4 shows (Wicked, Mean Girls, Motown, and The Color Purple). And yet, teaching singing is just as rewarding.

I focus on technique (low breaths, engaging support muscles, steady stream of air on the exhale...), pitch (the first step is to hear it!), and musicality - how to express not only the dynamic contours of the music, but also how to tell the story compellingly.

I also love working on Acting While Singing. So often, performers will act wonderfully until their songs, then drop out of character once they start singing. Many directors have said "I'd rather have an actor who can't sing than a singer who can't act". To improve this, we'll look at how to use a lyric specifically and personally in order to stay in the moment.

I would love to help you discover yourself inside the songs you sing. Whether your goal is Broadway, community theater, or simply to have fun (all equally noble aspirations), I welcome the ...

Zak is an amazing teacher for those who want to take their singing to the next level. His methods help the singer to greatly improve their ability to express intent and feeling while singing, among other things. To put it simply, Zak's teachings make the difference between good singers and fantastic singers!

Zak is a super great instructor and very supportive and kind! I had a great time working with him!

I would highly recommend Zak if you are looking for a piano instructor. He is not only a very talented musician, but an exceptional teacher. My son was a beginner piano student at 11 years old and Zak was able to create lessons that not only held his interest but had him begging for longer and more frequent lessons. Zak took input from my son about what he was interested in and tailored his lessons to meet my sons needs. My son learned more than just how to play songs. Zak taught music theory, cord progressions, proper posture on the piano bench and so many other things that go into playing beautifully. My son is interested in composing and Zak, as an accomplished composer was able to give him invaluable insight and feedback. We feel very lucky to have had him as a teacher and highly recommend him.

"A great teacher

I started working with Jameson well over a year and a half ago. Jameson has helped me to find my voice, quite literally. Through our weekly sessions he helped me find a deep, rich, bass voice that I didn't know I had. Using the Alexander technique, my posture improved and the richness of my voice came out. I have so appreciated his patience, kindness, and ability to give me space as I figured out how my voice worked. I would HIGHLY recommend Jameson as an intuitive teacher who works at the student's pace. I have learned so much from him."

Washington, DC Singing Venues for Everyone

By Mariana P. - DC Voice Teacher

When Washington, DC is mentioned, most people immediately think of politics. Great opportunities for singers or singing lessons in Washington, DC would not be the first thought on someone’s mind. As serious as it may seem, the Washington, DC area has an eclectic mix of singing venues for all performance levels and music genres. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts houses the Washington National Opera and also offers free concerts every day at 6:00 pm on their Millennium Stage where any musical group can perform after an audition. DC is also home to many small theater companies which hold open auditions for anyone interested; musical theater, show choirs and jazz bands are among the most prominent genres.

There are plenty of

...

venues where students taking singing lessons in Washington, DC can cultivate their skills. If Rock ‘n Roll is your trade, the U Street corridor hosts many rock spots such as The Black Cat, Velvet Lounge and of course, the U Street Music Lounge. For those who prefer smaller spaces with open mic opportunities, Busboys and Poets in Arlington, VA and Jammin’ Java in Vienna, VA should not be missed. Let’s not forget those who sing just for personal enjoyment. If you ever want to experience the thrill of being on stage, karaoke is the way to go. Café Japone is a local favorite as well as Peyote Café in Adams Morgan. Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar takes the karaoke experience to another level, allowing its patrons to come in costume or providing them for those who come unprepared. Now that you know where to go to build on the skills you are already learning from your singing lessons in Washington, DC, what are you waiting for? Get out there and sing!
