I really enjoyed my experience taking voice lessons from Alex! I learned something new every lesson and was given the opportunity to sing some of my favorite songs along with some that were less familiar. Alex helped me with many audition pieces and made sure I was prepared and confident before going into every audition. He made every lesson fun and I would definitely recommend taking lessons from him!

Would not recommend. Has some knowledge but a really bad character and will put you down as a person. If you aren’t a favorite, you’re ranked least important and more likely to be put down. A really bad experience and person.

Miriam is an excellent musician, mentor, and person! She knows her craft extremely well and knows how to coach someone by offering critical feedback and encouragement. Miriam is the kindest and most compassionate person that you will ever meet. Taking vocal lessons with Miriam will make you a better singer and a better person. Thanks, Miriam!

I have been a choir teacher for 3 years and I have a huge passion for singing! As a band kid that went to college playing a wind instrument (who also had very little interest in becoming a better singer), I was shocked to find just how much joy teaching others to sing brought me. Additionally, and I cannot stress this enough, I believe that EVERYONE can sing. Popular shows like "American Idol" or "America's Got Talent" would have you believe that singing is a talent that only a lucky few are born with. However, I am here to tell you that, just like any other instrument or worthwhile skill in life, singing takes practice! The more you dedicate yourself to practicing, the more you will grow. Simple as that! With that said, I am searching for eager students who wish to strengthen their vocal abilities! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of technical ability and excellent musicianship. Hopefully I'll be singing with ...

Vivian makes learning the clarinet fun and I look forward to every lesson. She has already taught me new notes and songs after just five lessons. She was also open to incorporating music from my favorite movies (Harry Potter) into my lesson plans. The music is more advanced for me and so I really appreciate Vivian’s patience and her demonstrations so I know exactly what to play for each song. I’m glad to have Vivian as my teacher.

My 12 year old son has been taking clarinet lessons with Vivian for almost two months. At his first lesson he could barely play one note. I've been so impressed with his improvement every week. My son says, "she's very helpful and understanding." We highly recommend!

My daughter really enjoys her lessons with Vivian. She provides a warm and supportive environment for learning. I can definitely see improvement in my daughter's skill level.

Anyone Can Sing! Tips for Building up the Inexperienced Singer

By Robert M. - TakeLessons Singing Teacher

There is nothing more enjoyable than the human voice. All of us use our singing to bring out artistry and fun in all places, whether it is echoing the radio, wailing in the shower, praising in congregations, or just humming while you work. Preparing the inexperienced singer can prove to be a difficult, multi-tasking job as teachers attempt to build up their students’ abilities, fundamentals, techniques, tonality and most importantly, confidence.

Since I have had many opportunities to work with all types of students taking singing lessons in Houston, I have drawn together common characteristics that allow me to always have a prepared and quick diagnosis as well as extensive goals within the first lesson. The most common concerns wi

...

th beginner voice students include pitch control, breath control and posture, lip shaping, tongue placement, and balance of the vocal register. Building up a beginner or even someone with very little singing ability requires routine procedures that will always yield results. Some of my favorite techniques include the following: • Use melodic intervals to aid in pitch location such as the common Dominant to Tonic • Utilize a hand mirror/standing mirror for the student to self-check lip shaping while observing the instructor • Fix breath control by advising the student to lean back and pretend to sleep in order to activate the proper intercostals muscles and the diaphragm • Adjust the pitches to the correct registers by using the incorrect pitch and sliding it up or down to the right pitch with the keyboard • Empower the students by reminding them that their musical success and progress is in their hands, as the instructor is only the guide and interpreter • Anticipate every student inability in order to always have a prepared solution to any repetitive issue

What is so important to vocal lessons is the need to continually shape and manipulate the beginning students, expanding their abilities that require a teacher to give them precise direction. My music education background allows me to go beyond just the musical necessities as I know the best strategies and approaches for students: gaining their focus and confidence, manipulating the mental filters that inhibit the learning process, push for intrinsic motivation with few rewards, and always make the material relative on a personal basis. If you are ready to begin your musical journey and let out your inner voice, I encourage you to sign up for singing lessons in Houston today!

How to Become a Singer: 5 Qualities You Need to Succeed

Wondering how to become a singer? Take a look at the five essential qualities you'll need in this guest post by Ann Arbor, MI singing teacher Elaina R...   Plenty of people want to be singers. At the same time, though, most people have no idea how to become a singer and really improve. Why? Singing is complicated! Singing is a performing art. Using Scales to Improve Your Vocal Range and More

We all know the importance of vocal warm-ups before singing.  But we also know how easy it is to start slacking off or conveniently "forget" that step of the process.  Warm-ups - and scales, in particular - may not be the most fun, but they are absolutely essential when it comes to caring for your voice and improving your singing.  Not only does incorporating scales into your routine help warm up your vocal cords, it can help you to improve your vocal range, increase your pitch accuracy and t …

How "Breathy Voice" is Created | The Danger of Breathy Singing

Singing in a “breathy voice” has a mixed reputation among singers and educators, and for good reason: it can be risky. In this article, we’ll discuss the mechanics of singing with a breathy voice, if it’s harmful, and how use to the technique safely. Remember the spectacularly cheesy film “A Walk to Remember”? In this 2002 film, Mandy Moore sings a pop ballad called “Only Hope” using excessive breathiness to create a fragile, emotionally charged aura for her character. …
