I have been teaching this subject for over 16 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Music is not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it may be selected from the western classical, musical theatre, and popular rep based on the student's goals and learning needs with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

I really enjoyed my experience taking voice lessons from Alex! I learned something new every lesson and was given the opportunity to sing some of my favorite songs along with some that were less familiar. Alex helped me with many audition pieces and made sure I was prepared and confident before going into every audition. He made every lesson fun and I would definitely recommend taking lessons from him!

My daughter took vocal training from Alex for several months until he moved. Alex went out of his way to individualize my daughter's training. He thought of relevant ways to make connections that were personalized to help her improve her technique. We felt she made significant improvements during her training, and would highly recommend Alex!

As a bass opera singer and professional voice over artist, I am dedicated to creating a healthy and beautiful sound with my own voice and the voices of my students. I will not come into our lessons saying there is a single way to sing. In fact, many genres require a great deal of varying vocal techniques and stylized voices. What I will do is help to lay a foundation in healthy singing so that you feel comfortable singing any genre. We will start by ensuring that your breath and vowel placement feels comfortable and from there move into repertoire of your choosing or some that I recommend based upon your interests. You will leave your tenure with me empowered to continue your passion and career for singing long after your lessons end. Music is meant to be shared. Together, we will help you to share the music and passion that you hold so dear.

I have a unique approach to voice in that I want all of my students to be able to sing in any style. I have been exploring vocal anatomy for a few years now to answer a question that has always fascinated me: how does a pop singer create a different sound than an opera singer or a jazz singer? The answer is vocal anatomy. Whether we realize it or not, all voice lessons really do is teach us how to move around our vocal apparatus in an effective manner.
I don't believe in wasting lesson time with extensive warm ups. I would so much rather have more time to teach you the content you need to become a successful singer. The other thing that is unique about my lessons is that we do not spend the whole time singing. Just like you wouldn't pick up an instrument and just start playing, singing without the knowledge of how our voice works is not time effective. I know this may sound strange, but my students are always amazed at how quickly they progress. A little knowledge goes a long way.

I have been singing classically for the last 8 years, studying with nationally-known voice teachers. I have competed at the national level and been a part of nationally recognized choirs. In addition to classical singing, I have experience in musical theatre, jazz, and pop styles. I am currentl

"My son is 16 and has been taking lessons with sandra since November of 2014. Sandra not only focuses on singing techniques to build your support and vocal strength, but also helps with understanding sheet music and acting within a musical piece. She is extremely personable and friendly. She has helped my son expand his vocal range, and she taught him vocal techniques to use to develop his voice. My son does musical theatre, and Sandra has taken a significant amount time during each lesson to help him sing the songs comfortably and understand the acting stand point in each song. She is a great teacher for him."

"Molly is the best.

I came to Molly because I had never really sung before, and had wanted to pick it up after playing different instruments. I was pretty self conscious about the whole idea of singing, and didnt really have that much faith in it. I really didnt know what to expect from singing lessons at all, but Molly really broke things down for me and made the experience positive. She wasn't judgmental or pushy in any way at all. She listened to my ideas of what I wanted to sing, and some of the artists I got inspiration from. Not only that, but she's really awesome because she likes so many different genres of music! I would think that most vocal teachers prefer more classical types of music, but Molly could totally relate to rock n roll, alternative, etc. After my first lesson with Molly I felt 100% more confident about training my voice, and everything I was looking for in voice lessons I found. Thats why I keep taking lessons from her. She set me up with many different exercises to practice by myself, and she does a really good job of breaking things down so that a person with no singing experience can understand everything. Overall, I would recommend anyone, regardless of age or music preference to go to Molly for vocal lessons.

Also, she does skype lessons which is a HUGE help for me considering I live a little far from her. (I didnt know what to expect with that either, but you'll be surprised how well it works).

"I took voice lessons and performed in musical theatre and singing groups in high school, sang at a few friends' weddings, but never really did anything with music after college (I'm now 65!!). When I joined a choir a year or two ago, I decided it was time for a tune up, and discovered Rachel. She put me at ease right away with her warm and informal approach, but her "pedigree" was impressive and I knew I had a lot to learn. And boy did I! She's taught me so much about technique; my tone and range have really improved, and I am loving it all! We started with choir music, went on to Broadway shows, and now I've started opera! Rachel can do it all. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we switched to zoom lessons, and we really haven't missed a beat (pun intended). I highly recommend Rachel; you won't be disappointed."

"Eric has been my son's vocal teacher for some time now and has done a superb job helping him grow as a singer. Sebastian has made much progress since starting lessons with Eric and we couldn't be more pleased. Eric is extremely easy to relate to, very responsive and thinks outside the box to help overcome challenges and tough spots. From the beginning, Eric has taught Sebastian new ways to improve his singing, and consistently challenges him to choose material that is not only relatable to him but pushes him to face problem areas and succeed. I would firmly recommend Eric Jayk as a music instructor for anyone who wants to learn from a knowledgeable professional."

Can’t say enough how pleased (I am) when I walk away from every lesson with her! She is soft spoken and loves music, which reflects on her passion to teach others. She makes me think, she makes me work, but it’s a blast!
If you are serious about learning how to play the piano, I highly recommend Natasha as your piano teacher."

"Rebecca is an amazing teacher. A year ago, I wanted to learn how to sing better but was very self-conscious whenever I sang. Rebecca has a very non-judgmental teaching style and demeanor, which really helped in the first few months of our lessons and ever since. She's always very patient and encouraging, and explains concepts and exercises clearly. My singing ability and confidence have both improved over the 1 1/2 years I've been her student. Each lesson is productive and focused, while still being relaxed. At the end of every lesson, I feel like I've learned useful, interesting information.

She's a genuinely nice, fun person and lessons are never boring. Highly recommended!"

Anyone Can Sing! Tips for Building up the Inexperienced Singer

By Robert M. - TakeLessons Singing Teacher

There is nothing more enjoyable than the human voice. All of us use our singing to bring out artistry and fun in all places, whether it is echoing the radio, wailing in the shower, praising in congregations, or just humming while you work. Preparing the inexperienced singer can prove to be a difficult, multi-tasking job as teachers attempt to build up their students’ abilities, fundamentals, techniques, tonality and most importantly, confidence.

Since I have had many opportunities to work with all types of students taking singing lessons in Houston, I have drawn together common characteristics that allow me to always have a prepared and quick diagnosis as well as extensive goals within the first lesson. The most common concerns with beginner voice students include pitch control, breath control and posture, lip shaping, tongue placement, and balance of the vocal register. Building up a beginner or even someone with very little singing ability requires routine procedures that will always yield results. Some of my favorite techniques include the following: • Use melodic intervals to aid in pitch location such as the common Dominant to Tonic • Utilize a hand mirror/standing mirror for the student to self-check lip shaping while observing the instructor • Fix breath control by advising the student to lean back and pretend to sleep in order to activate the proper intercostals muscles and the diaphragm • Adjust the pitches to the correct registers by using the incorrect pitch and sliding it up or down to the right pitch with the keyboard • Empower the students by reminding them that their musical success and progress is in their hands, as the instructor is only the guide and interpreter • Anticipate every student inability in order to always have a prepared solution to any repetitive issue

What is so important to vocal lessons is the need to continually shape and manipulate the beginning students, expanding their abilities that require a teacher to give them precise direction. My music education background allows me to go beyond just the musical necessities as I know the best strategies and approaches for students: gaining their focus and confidence, manipulating the mental filters that inhibit the learning process, push for intrinsic motivation with few rewards, and always make the material relative on a personal basis. If you are ready to begin your musical journey and let out your inner voice, I encourage you to sign up for singing lessons in Houston today!
