If You Can Talk, You Can Sing - NYC Voice Lessons

As a singing instructor based in NYC, I have always felt that there is no such thing as a bad student, only bad teachers. If you have a good teacher then you will in turn become a good student.

When a new student comes to me, I begin the lesson by telling the student right away that my motto is “If you can talk you can sing, and I guarantee it” - therefore the responsibility to get this student to sing well is mine, not theirs since they are paying me to help them find their best voice.

Once this is understood, the student can then relax, begin the process of trusting me and open up for the experience of learning to sing. I also make sure the student thinks of the lesson as a mini vacation from everything that has happened before the lesson and anything that will happen after. This allows for complete concentration during each session.

In addition to teaching private singing lessons in New York City, I give performance classes once a month. These singing classes address the elements of stage fright and performance anxiety which can’t be addressed in private voice lessons. Only in a class with other singing students will the student be able to learn skills to combat the nervousness that comes from the fear of singing in front of others.

I also present my students in local recitals twice a year to give them a performing goal to work towards. There is no better way to jump start the improvement of the voice than to have a performance you are preparing for. I teach all styles of singing and work from a classically trained throat, which is the basis of all correct singing. The only thing that changes is the style of music that one is singing.

In closing, the most important thing is that my students have fun in their lessons. After all, singing is a joyous experience and that is the reason we do it. Paul M is an American born, New York-based Piano teacher, Vocal coach, Pianist, Composer and Artist. As an educator, Paul is part of The Suffolk Piano Teachers Forum, College Music Society and Music Teachers National. He has been an Adjunct-instructor at New York University (NYU). Paul also conducts master classes and seminars in The United states and South America. As an artist, Paul is known for creating large instillations, paintings and live performing art pieces. From 2014-2016, he was the artist in residence at Spectrum Gallery in NYC. In 2014, he completed the Elevator Time Machine, a large instillation made of elevator parts that responds to sound. He also wrote and produced a 20 minute live art piece called Static in Movement for piano and video. I am also a composition teacher. I work with composition students from beginner to advance. My composition students, over the years, range from all ages starting at 7. My students, after the first year, have been able to write string quartets and piano trios. My advanced students have entered competitions all over the country and are very successful in their composition practice. Some of their compositions have been performed in famous concert halls and schools.
As a vocal coach, I work with students of all ages. The repertoire that I recommend to beginner students includes Disney, Broadway and classical music. For intermediate and advanced vocal student, I have successfully prepared them for competitions, Broadway and University auditions as well as personal enjoyment.
Most recently I held a piano, composition and vocal recital for my students at the world famous Steinway Hall in New York City. I believe that some students work better when there is motivation for performance activities. For that reason I host these type of events. Students that decide they want to take place in these events perform among all levels. I offer these performance opportunities as an invitation. Each student has a choice as to whether they would like to perform.

There are lots of reasons people take singing lessons...a dream of performing for crowds, wanting to melt faces at karaoke, not being embarrassed when singing in the shower... But the common goal is finding your voice and creating a sound you love. My studio is designed to create a space where that process is comfortable and fun! Lessons will start wherever you’re at and go at your own pace towards your specific goals.

I was trained at the School of Creative Arts in Sydney, Australia and specialize in pop, rock and R&B vocal technique. I work with a lot of beginners as well as people in bands and songwriters.

I'm from an extremely musical family and have always loved singing. (I almost pushed my parents over the edge as a kid because I would hum CONSTANTLY...) I lived in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the US of A growing up and

I have been teaching voice for about 5 years now, and am an active performer myself in music theatre and opera. In lessons I work with my students on singing without counterproductive tension and learning to use their breath to support the sound in a way that’s healthy and will keep them singing their whole lives. I create a safe, supportive atmosphere where the student is comfortable to experiment, because I know from experience that is how real learning and expression happens. Singing and playing piano have always been a huge part of my life. I love to perform everything from opera and sacred music to music theater and jazz, and have been performing since I was very young. I earned my Bachelor’s of Music in vocal performance from DePaul University School of Music in Chicago. It was there that I fell in love with teaching, when I taught my first student as part of a course in vocal pedagogy. Since then I have built my studio to over 20 voice and piano students here in NY and CT. It has been thrilling to see all the progress they've made! I just completed my Masters of Music at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College.

I have had several excellent and truly inspiring teachers myself with different teaching styles, and so I have a variety of approaches to drawn upon in helping my own students. Vocal techni
que was not something that came easy for me, and was something I had to really work on. This work on technique has made me a stronger teacher. I know how many different approaches it can take to make something click, so I use the diverse experiences of my own studies to find what works best for each student. While I am classically trained, I am comfortable teaching all types of singers, because I believe that at its core, what makes a singer great is the same between all genres. My number one goal in teaching is to help my students use their voice in a way that is healthy and allows them the greatest ability for expression, because ultimately, I believe that is what music is about.

Although singing has been a big part of my professional work in the past few years, I have also been playing classical piano since I was four and still love to play and share this love with my students. Most of my students are piano students, and I love seeing the progress they've made over the years. Students that started with me as beginners a few years ago are now reading music with confidence and playing works by Mozart and Beethoven.

I am an active performer and am able to draw upon this experience in my teaching. This summer I performed in Manhattan with dell'Arte Opera Ensemble and won 2nd prize in their dell'Arte/Jeiven Awards. Past roles include Gretel in Hansel and Gretel at Brooklyn College and Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni with Connecticut Lyric Opera. Other roles include April in Company with Westport Community Theatre, Despina (cover) in Mozart's Così fan tutte for Connecticut Lyric Opera, the messenger in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at DePaul University, and Maria in West Side Story with the McLeod Summer Playhouse. I have a special love for early music and have performed oratorio by Bach with the DePaul Baroque Ensemble and as part of the Bethesda Music Series in New Haven. I also participated in the prestigious Amherst Early Music Festival for two years. I have performed abroad in Austria and Italy, and speak French, Italian, and some German. Because of my experience on stage in opera , music theatre, and recitals, I understand the skills it takes to engage an audience and create a well-rounded performance. Studying music can be beneficial at any time in a persons life and is a wonderful form of expression. Some students come to me for audition preparation for high school or college. Some come because they've always wanted to learn how to sing better at karaoke. Others want to play guitar or piano for family functions or want to write a song but aren't sure where to start. Some want to pursue a career in theater and the arts.

From the very first lesson, I gear the music towards each student's specific goals an
d preferences. From pop music, to jazz standards, to Broadway show tunes and classical arias, the lesson is tailored to the student's interests and desires. I spend some time in each lesson focusing on technique and proper warm-ups. I also ask lot's of questions to find out what the student is having challenges with in particular. Lessons range from 30, 45 and 60 minutes.

I - Silent Foundation

The silent foundation refers to the condition of your instrument as it is silent. If we are looking at the body as an instrument that sings, we first have to make sure that our instrument is in good condition. How healthy is your instrument? Is it well rested, well hydrated and loose? Or is it tired, dehydrated and tense? As you could guess, the condition of your instrument will have a significant impact on the quality of the sounds you make. So the first thing to be addressed is how your instrument is before it starts making sound.

II - Conditioning of Singing Behaviors

This is when we get busy. Once we have a well rested, healthy, hydrated and relaxed instrument we can start working it out. The goal is to condition our singing behaviors to be reflexive, reliable and strong. The way to do this is through a series of vocal exercises that will condition your voice to respond to the desires of your heart. Whatever it is that you want to express will be possible once your instrument is conditioned to the point where there is no gap between what you want to express and your ability to do so. Learning to sing is all about learning how to express yourself without barriers. You should be able to develop enough range, power, control and skill so that you can express your heart without feeling like you'™re incapable of achieving what you pursue. To achieve these abilities training is often necessary.

ou're interested in playing piano, you will learn how to read music and/or play by ear. You'll learn scales, chords, arpeggios, sight-reading, and basic music theory. For singers who are interested in piano, I've developed a great technique to teach you how to accompany yourself.

For songwriters, I can help you write stronger lyrics and set them to music appropriately.

In general, I'm pretty upbeat and fun. However, I expect you to practice. When you practice, you hear and feel the difference and everyone's happy! If you don't practice, you'll remain in the same place, and it's frustrating for everyone. :( Please, please, please practice! :)

My degree in music education and wide range of experience allows me to accommodate different learning styles. I have a knack for breaking down seemingly difficult or mysterious concepts in a way that's easy to understand. I also understand the demands of being a full time musician, and can offer advice to students who are interested in going that route.

Kiyan is a great friend of mine whom I reached out to for singing lessons. I am not pursuing vocals as a career, but more for personal enjoyment. Kiyan never once made me feel as if I was new at this and broke everything down to the roots. A superb person and an excellent teacher.

Kiyan is instinctive and insightful as a teacher. Always prepared and definitely intuitive when it comes to learning how his students work. I took vocal lessons with Kiyan for a little over a year and he definitely taught me how to use my voice properly. We did a range of styles from classical to more contemporary music. He also taught me a good amount of music theory as well. I am trained as a jazz vocalist, as a recent graduate from The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. I focus on vocal health, and finding a repertoire that fits the student's voice. Voice lessons are focused around creating a personalized warm-up and vocal exercise regimen, mixed with ear training and music theory. We then spend the rest of the lesson working on music of the student's choice. I also love teaching students how to improvise if they are interested, and I can also teach songwriting.

I've only had two sessions and I already have a better sense of control over my voice and all the anatomy associated with singing. Rebecca has a non judgemental demeanor which helps students, especially beginners such as myself to feel more comfortable and relaxed. She is knowledgeable and I was impressed with the way she assessed my range, and analyzed my voice in the initial session then set realistic goals to improve my control and the quality of my voice.

I was fortunate to work closely with Shelley at NYU for several years. She is not only an exceptional singer when it comes to technique, versatility and musicality but she has a true understanding of how the voice works and an ability to communicate clearly when it comes the abstract and complex concepts that are involved in singing. Shelley is also an excellent musician and a dedicated and fun performer and teacher who brings joy to all of the work that she does. She is operating at a level far above most singers and voice teachers in NYC and yet she is down to earth and will find a way to relate to any student. Anyone thinking of studying with Shelley should jump at the chance!

I met Shelley when I employed her at NYU and must first comment on her professionalism, poise, and understanding. She is adaptable to everyone she meets and always finds ways to bring out the best in people.
I then worked with Shelley for pre-performance of my one-man show. She was dedicated in assisting me with techniques on how to sustain my voice, projection, and also emotional depth through tone.
I couldn't recommend her knowledge and skills enough. You'd be lucky to have her on your side and in your corner.
