Piano - Classical, Jazz, Blues and Improvisation. Current students are beginners to professional musicians and music teachers.

Voice – I am an accomplished vocal coach and songwriter and currently work with a wide variety of singers from young beginners to professionals who look to develop through ear training, singing and songwriting. In a unique way I guide people to become better performers and musicians through the combination of voice, piano and composition.

I work with students as young as 3 or 4 and into their 80’s. It’s important to begin with an excellent teacher from the start to set a good foundation and to have the ability to develop as quickly and thoroughly as possible. I enjoy working with beginners as well as accomplished musicians. I also believe that music is one of the great joys of life and that lessons should be FUN!

Besides a wide variety of performance opportunities through my Family to Family Concerts, I also offer my students the curriculum and exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, a gold standard music curriculum.. The ABRSM is accredited in over 100 countries worldwide and exams are offered twice per year in all instruments and voice.

A message from Robert: Hello, I am a master teacher focusing on the classical repertoire along with a very creative approach to improvisation and composition. I help students to achieve their interests of music rather than focusing on teaching one particular method. Classes are tailored to the student and constantly evolving. This has led me to work in a variety of mediums and styles including Jazz, improvisation, rock and blues. This approach also enhances an understanding and love of classical music.

I discovered music sifting through my Dad's record collection and soon decided that I wanted to play guitar. As a teenager I began taking lessons and building confidence in my abilities. I played in different types of bands ranging from rock, country, blues, and jazz. After completing College in 2004, I realized music was not just going to be a hobby, but a career. At age 37, I have been teaching and playing guitar professionally for the last 13 years. I believe that anybody can learn to play as long as they are patient and understand that anything worthwhile takes time and sustained effort to achieve. My lesson plans are developed on an individual basis. I want you to learn the music that inspires your passion. If the guitar is new to you, the first lessons are devoted to basic playing skills and techniques. It is important to develop a strong understanding of music fundamentals to ensure that the student is attaining the skills they need to be a complete musician. I emphasize technique with drills designed to raise my students' skills evenly across a wide range of categories, like picking, fretting, scale patterns, chord shapes, rhythm training, and ear training. I have had success with many students using this approach and most are playing songs within a couple months. For the more serious student, music theory is an important tool to understand songwriting and music in general. I am always open to discuss what we do during a lesson. I believe it is my job to balance what you want to do with what you need to do in order to succeed.

I have studied with Wanchi Huang at James Madison University for six years. At JMU, I earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music, both in violin performance. I received my D.M.A. at Catholic University of America, studying with Jody Gatwood. When I was a student at JMU, I taught several students privately. The students ranged from retirees to JMU faculty and students to adolescents. I am now teaching at Baltimore Talent Education Center, where I teach violin in small groups and individual lessons. The students at BTEC range from pre- kindergarden through high school. I also have festival experience. I have been a student at Brevard Music Center, Heifetz International Music Institute, BayView Music Festival, and I was a Teaching Fellow at Interlochen Arts Camp. Through my experiences both as a student and as a teacher, I un
derstand that every student is a little bit different. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Every student has a different learning style. Every student has a different way of understanding things, a different way of processing information, and a different personality all together. It will be my job as a teacher to get to know each student individually and use my teaching methods to teach the student how to play the violin and help him or her to reach his or her goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back person. I am easy-going, enthusiastic about violin playing and about teaching and learning music, and I am very patient with my students as well. However, I am also very demanding. I explain and demonstrate objectives in a very precise way, and I demand a lot of detailed work from my students, inside and outside the lesson. I explain specifically what I want the student to do. By the end of every lesson, the student will have specific things to work on for next time. I expect each student to make practicing a habit, and practice regularly what has been discussed in the lesson. I try to make the lessons as pleasant and as laid-back as possible. But I become more firm, serious, and strict when a student either is not making an effort or does not practice enough outside the lesson.
I start students off with the Suzuki method. We work on techniques to hold the violin properly, hold the bow properly, and get a decent sound out of the violin, without too much physical tension. A student begins by learning to play by ear. After he or she is comfortable playing by ear, we associate the notes that the student hears and plays on the violin with written notes on a page.
We also work with the Paul Roland methods so that the student can learn the violin in a basic, rudimentary way. It involves a lot of repetitive patterns, back and forth motions that are slow and round, and avoiding excessive tension. This will give the student the tools that he or she needs to learn how to play the violin in a short period of time.
In three to six months, a student who is a beginner will be able to hold the violin and bow comfortably, create a decent sound on the violin, and play the Twinkle Variations, and maybe a few other songs.
If the student has played violin before, then in three to six months, he or she will have had some rehabilitation to get rid of tension and force, overcome some bad habits he or she may have developed, and review the fundamentals of violin playing. I will improve the student's approach to the violin, and by the end of the three to six months, he or she will have a better idea on how to practice and play the violin.

I will expect the student to have a violin, rosin, and a pencil.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki Method- a starting point, particularly for kids, but for people of all ages. It is a good way to begin learning the violin by playing by ear, developing a strong, clear tone, and bringing out one's individuality through his/her musical development and his/her ability to be expressive.

In a matter of time, I want the student to get used to reading music, in addition to playing by ear. This can be done through the pieces in the Suzuki method or through other music.

Eventually, I take the student off of the Suzuki method and work with him or her on classical repertoire.

My son has been learning violin lessons from Jonathan since the summer of 2014 when he was 10. We are so fortunate to find Jonathan at takelessons.com and very happy and grateful to have him as a private tutor throughout the years. Jonathan is a brilliant musician and passionate violinist, very professional. He is really good at teaching, very patient and detailed. Whenever my son made a mistake, he would immediately point it out and show him the right way to do it and have him practice time and time again until he got it right. He would also write notes on my son’s music sheet to remind him things he needs to pay attention to during his practice at home. Jonathan also organizes recitals regularly for all his students to gather together and play in a concert like atmosphere and interact and learn from each other, which is really a wonderful experience. Jonathan can be reached easily by text message, email or phone and we have never run into any problem rescheduling a lesson or anything else. I highly recommend Jonathan for anyone who wants to learn violin or music in general.

He going to be angry when you make a mistake and he is not patience. I don’t recommend him for beginners students or even advanced students. Even the price is kind of cheap but it wasn’t worth it.

I teach piano, horn, trumpet, theory & ear training, and coach ensembles, performance class as well as music and movement class for ages 0-6, and drum circle and cultural literacy for adults.

I am a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, and I've played all over the world. I've played with soloists from Frank Sinatra to Diana Ross, Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons to Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. I still perform and consider this important to my teaching as well.

Some major accomplishments include an invitation to the White House, over 50 solo performances with orchestras starting with The Philadelphia Orchestra at age 15, a performance for the Princess of Thailand, and early television performances starting at age 7. In order to accomplish these things, I had great teach
ers, a regimen of discipline and practice, an expectation I have of my students, and all the rewards that have lasted a lifetime. Properly taught music lessons are life lessons and are never a waste. I incorporate fun into the lessons as discipline and fun must be combined for success and enjoyment at all levels.

My teachers included Eleanor Sokoloff, Susan Starr, and Dale Clevenger.

I've taught for 29 years, and have a proven track record of success. I've taught at Universities including The University of Notre Dame, The University of Tennessee, The Chinese University and the Academy of Performing Arts in Hong Kong. I adore my students. Each one needs to be assessed and taught differently. Something you cannot learn in school, only through years of experience!

Please note: If you want in home piano lessons, you need a reasonably high quality instrument, and must maintain the tuning. I have perfect pitch and it will be crucial to me.

While I had previous experience playing an instrument MANY years ago, I never played the piano and started taking lessons with Lori as an adult. In almost no time I was able to read the bass clef (left hand) notes and within the year I had learned all the scales (majors and relative minors - both harmonic and melodic) and arpeggios (root and inversions). I was also playing "real" pieces of music.

Lori stresses good technique and good practice habits and can suggest more than one way to master a concept. She also makes learning the piano fun.

Hello! My name is Zachary (or Zac for short) and I am a Baltimore-based brass performer and teacher. I have been playing euphonium and other brass instruments for 14 years. Currently, I am in my final year as a music education student at Towson University, where I study euphonium with US Navy musician James Hicks. In addition to euphonium, I am quite proficient on both trombone and tuba, and have taught trumpet and horn as well.

Currently, I play euphonium in the Towson University Symphonic Band and Towson University Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, trombone in a folk-rock style band, and am an avid solo artist. I also have two years of experience as a nationally touring member of the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps. In addition to these experiences, I have performed with the Cadets2 Drum & Bugle Corps, the Baltimore Ravens Marching Band, and th
e Bushwackers Drum & Bugle Corps. In 2013, I was a recipient of the United States Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence.

Zac taught me how to properly perform an aria in front of a whole lot of important people that I was stressed about. He gave me some excellent pointers on how to work with a pianist. His knowledge of music and his experience in performance has certainly shaped the way I perceive my own performances ever since that lesson.

As a musician, Zac is above and beyond talented. Because of his proficiency and excellence, he offers great insight and helpful hints on how to play properly and with support, two extremely important parts of being a musician. Lastly, it is quite obvious what music means to him. His passion is inspiring, and makes me want to continue to pursue and practice my instrument. His lessons helped me develop from a second part to a first part, enabling me to play higher and more challenging parts for my band. Knowing that I was able to leave better than I started makes myself feel lucky and appreciative that I was able to take lessons with a person like Zac. What I enjoy most about teaching piano:

The opportunity to transform the piano into more than a box with black and white buttons, but rather, a device capable of communicating every human emotion in limitless ways, that is, if our physical bodies are up to the task.

Let me explain:

As a musician who takes great care of his health through a wide-range of physical activities and sound (pun intended) nutrition, I'm a firm believer that playing the piano requires tremendous physical control, dexterity, and poise.

This notion is constantly proven true again and again when I give lessons to children and adults who are engaged in sports or any other physical training outside of studying music. Because they are in good shape, they can demand much more from their bodies. This instantly heightens their overall musicianship and individua
l artistic expression.

My approach to piano lessons simply put is: How do we form as close a physical bond as possible between the instrument and student? In terms of piano, I acheive this goal by training the student's hands to move; in the best way; in the right way; in the most healthiest way; in an athletic way.

Now, you *do not* have to be an athlete to see results. My point is= I take an athletic position in terms of teaching piano.

I fully understand music theory, chords, scales and rhythm. So does every other teacher.

What other teachers *do not know* is: How to teach students of any age how best to move at the piano.

This specifically is what seperates me from 99 percent of piano teachers.

Overall point= If we did not have a body with which to move, we would not be able to make any music at all. So on a fundamental level, your body is the first thing that needs to be trained when learning a new instrument.
