About Glafkos
I'm a professional musician and teacher with over 20 years of experience.I feel that music is a beautiful thing in our world, magical at times and can be incredibly exciting, fun and rewarding.A universal language and a powerful tool, that can help us connect with ourselves and each other.
I always enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for music with students and help them discover what it can do for them.
I strongly feel that learning music at any level should be fun,and that the process of learning is most important and essentially the same as the end result.

In my lessons I strive towards a balance between discipline and creativity, and look for a holistic approach to learning.I explore sight-reading,ear-training, technique, memorization,as well as improvisation which I found to be a powerful learning tool and a fun way to experience music fr
om the beginning.I encourage classical music ,improvisation techniques as well as pieces that the student may have special connections to.I've learned that in general every one learns in his or her own unique way, and I see my job as a teacher to find the best approach for each of my students and guide him or her towards what they are naturally inclined to.

About Nikole
Hi! I appreciate you taking the time to learn more about how I can help you as a teacher.

What is my background?
I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. I have developed a keen ability to assess and shape talent from years of training, teaching, performing, and working with the head of Arts programs to conduct admissions interviews, student evaluations, and performances. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and privately with notable musicians focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e. Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk).

What material is covered during lessons?
Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) as well as posture,
artistic expression, interpretation, breathing, and finger and pitch placement techniques are incorporated into my music instruction. Cold reading, audition preparation and technique, Shakespeare, scene analysis, and business strategies are examples of topics that may be covered in acting instruction. Linklater (voice), Alexander, Williamson (movement), and Art of Practicing (piano) methods are also employed.

What are the profiles of my students?
My students come from different walks of life: children coming from school who bound excitedly to my lesson door; teenage artists who have the passion and vision but lack the technique; working adults who seek reprieve from the stress of work by singing/ learning an instrument that they've always wanted to play; and seniors who want a fun hobby to keep active. I enjoy teaching them and watching them master the fundamentals while developing their own performance style (or even composing their own music)!

What is my teaching style?
Based on feedback, students appreciate that I am a teacher with a warm personality whose supportive, passionate, and fun approach and effective techniques help them attain the following: 1) a firm understanding of the fundamentals of music theory or acting technique; 2) an ability to effectively learn how to perform and practice singing/playing/acting a piece; and 3) a style of performing that minimizes tension, produces beautiful sound or a dynamic character, and/or allows them to fully express themselves. After a few months, students should have sound knowledge of all three.

My students and I connect, in part, because I remember being like them. On stage, I started out dancing and acting; I delved into singing and songwriting and then fell in love with playing the piano. The day that I learned how to merge those passions (i.e. singing while playing the piano) was one of the happiest days of my life! Now, whether I'm performing Shakespeare on stage, playing Chopin and Beethoven, or singing while playing tunes by Whitney Houston, I still get excited. Hopefully, I fuel that excitement in you, too!

What is the lesson structure?
Due to the comprehensive nature of my teaching style and structure, students above the age of 6 take lessons for 60 minutes; 30-minute lessons are only available for children aged 5-6. If a student wants to learn how to play while singing, I am happy to help him/her do so!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio location in Manhattan is conveniently near Midtown, Chelsea, Flat Iron, Murray Hill, Union Square, Tribeca, and the Financial District in particular and is easily accessible via public transportation. It houses an upright piano and seating for parents.

I endorse this teacher highly!

I was having trouble finding a teacher by word-of-mouth - prospective teachers would not return phone calls and seems to have little interest in my son's musical education. Ever since Take Lessons contacted Lesley-Ann on my behalf, we have been in consistent contact. She has followed through on her promises, presented an appropriate enthusiasm for the job, and seems to have really inspired my teenage son to want to play the piano, and view this as a great opportunity. I look forward to working with her on his development, and I encourage other prospective students to employ her as a guide on their musical journey.

Isaac is an excellent teacher and is highly recommended. His method is not centered on drills, music reading or repetition, but rather on getting an understanding of how the notes, chords work together. In so doing, the student gets a great understanding of theory and it opens the door to improvisation. In addition he's very patient with folks such as myself who don't come to class with a deep understanding of music theory.

He's my first teacher - I have never learned singing elsewhere before. He says I learn fast, but the truth is that he knows how to give the best exercises and advice to make the student realise one's full potential. Practising while following the advice he pointed out during the lesson, I suddenly found myself near 3-octave range within the first couple of lessons, and now we are working on rounding the tone and make it into a beautiful singing voice. On top of it, he's also very funny and approachable.

Tom is one of the best teachers I've ever had. When I first started studying with him, I really couldn't do much on the guitar, let alone write songs, write arrangements, or record music by myself. Nowadays, I feel comfortable in all of these areas, largely thanks to my lessons with Tom. Toms's explanations are extremely thorough and clear, and Tom always finds a way to make even the most boring things fun and interesting. +Tom has a great sense of humor- Could not recommend anyone more!! 5 stars

About Dia
After singing and performing for nearly my entire life, I have been in many musical projects and performances, including ongoing collaborations with Stuart Bogie ( Antibalas, Iron and Wine, Arcade Fire), and Joe McGinty (Psychedelic Furs, Nada Surf, Loser’s Lounge). I have sung with abandon in indie hot spots like Brooklyn Bowl, performed tributes at festivals like Mountain Jam, and traveled like a gypsy--honoring my desire to live a creatively full and wonderfully strange life.

In New York, I learned a holistic approach to vocal work from a combination of private instruction and master classes from my voice teacher, Kate Baker, hailed in many circles as “The Voice Whisperer.” I studied creative writing in the Colorado mountains with Dr. Clarissa Estes, New York Times Bestselling author of “Women Who Run with the Wolves,” and I g
raduated from New York University’s Steinhardt school with a BFA in painting and performance art.

I know firsthand that voice work is an incredibly personal and individual experience. Many of the challenges we face in the voice, are also challenges we face in our lives, be it an outmoded fear or a way of approaching technique that may need shifting. Either way, I am here to be your support, your sounding board, and your teacher to help you move past what may be hindering your creativity or your voice and move you into a place of healthy expression.

All the best, and may your voice be true!

About Josh
Josh began studying piano at age 16, an age generally considered late for a new piano student. Almost immediately, his teachers found that he had a natural ability to play the instrument at a high level. Tereza Lee, at the time a graduate piano student at the Manhattan School of Music, was Josh’s primary piano teacher and mentor, and helped him prepare for college, university and conservatory auditions. At age 18, after playing the piano for only two years, Josh received offers of admission from six conservatory programs to study piano performance, most notably from the Manhattan School of Music and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Josh chose to attend Carnegie Mellon, where in 2009 he was one of only three piano students to gain admission to the University’s School of Music. That same year, Josh became a Hadar Scholar, receiv
ing financial support from the Richard and Mica Hadar Foundation to pursue his undergraduate music studies.

Josh graduated from Carnegie Mellon with University and College Honors. He also received a merit scholarship to study with pianist Sandra Shen at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, N.C., where he studied for three summers, and performed solo and collaborative piano repertoire. While there, he studied further with Indiana University Jacobs School of Music professor, pianist Norman Krieger. Josh’s teachers at Carnegie Mellon were Sergey Schepkin and Ralph Zitterbart.

Josh is currently on the faculty a school for Music and Art in Manhattan, where he teaches piano, and his private studio in West Orange, N.J, where, in addition to piano, he uses music as therapy to help students with disabilities.

Josh also offers private piano lessons. Josh reaches students in New York City, and Essex and Passaic Counties in New Jersey.

Josh is a great instructor for our daughter. He puts a tremendous amount of thought into presenting his lessons in a way she can learn and absorb them.

We have seen how learning music has had such a positive impact on her life, beyond the technical skills of playing the piano and we attribute that to Josh's patience and flexibility.

As a colleague of Josh's I've found him to be uncommonly thoughtful towards his students and about the content and direction of his lessons. He is exceptionally prepared, incisive and intelligent, a fine musician and educator, and an easy person to recommend without hesitation. I'm confident any student will gain invaluable insight under his tutelage.

Josh is an incredible musician, teacher, guitar, and bass player (haven't tried his singing lessons yet). His knowledge on both theoretic and practical aspects of music (acquired during his studies as well as several tours with world class bands) is very broad which makes his lessons fun and dynamic, a major plus for motivation and learning process.
With his "hands on" guitar lessons we quickly built a fun song's set which was custom made for my skills level at the time. Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" was among one of the first songs I learned, and by then I had basic chord's as well as a couple major scale positions knowledge.
I ve been seeing Josh (lately via Skype, which saves me 1 hour a day in commute) for the past 3.5yrs and nowadays I am actually playing with a band which goes live every now and then, despite my challenging 10+ daily work hours.
Josh was instrumental to keep me motivated all the time, I strongly recommend giving him a try.

Josh Lattanzi is an excellent guitar teacher. He is a knowledgable, skilled and accomplished musician who has really helped me make sense of what has always been a confusing instrument for me.

Josh's style is patient, supportive and also very funny. He's the reason I love playing guitar and didn't get scared off by bar chords.

He also can play absolutely anything, and tailors my lessons to help me play the kind of stuff I write the best possible way. I am really grateful to be taught by him and will continue to take lessons as long as he's teaching.

Where do I start?

Josh Lattanzi's guitar lessons are simply the best. I started taking lessons with Josh after I graduated college. I was moving to New York to pursue songwriting and found Josh's website online, deciding to try out a lesson based on his experience as a musician and a teacher.

Now, over five years later I can confidently say that if I hadn't chosen Josh my career as a songwriter would be completely different. He goes above and beyond for his students.

I am simply incredibly lucky to have taken that initial step of a first lesson with Josh of NYC Guitar Lessons.

Josh is a patient, focused but fun teacher. His breadth and depth of knowledge of music, guitar and other instruments is extensive, and lends to thorough and thoughtful teaching.

The thing that I love most about taking lessons with Josh is that he is incredibly flexible, willing and able to tailor each student's lessons based on what their ultimate guitar goals are. It made it easy to refer friends to him that wanted to lean basics of guitar and suggest lessons to friends in the songwriting community who had more specific goals in mind.

I really can't speak highly enough about my experiences as an NYC guitar lessons student with Josh.

I am a professional singer, pianist, songwriter. I graduated from Manhattan School of Music, specifically voice.

Voice students can expect to improve week to week in their vocal technique. Every voice has a unique timbre; I teach students to release built up tension and apply foundational techniques in order to unlock their own individual sound. I can help any student to sing with freedom, confidence, and expression.

I teach piano students of all different ages and experience levels. I studied classical piano for 20 years. I can teach students to read music and pursue classical excellence, to learn how to play contemporary music using chord sheets, or both depending on the goals and preference of the student.

I firmly believe that great technique is essential to any music and every style. I look forward to meeting you and helping you t
