As a teacher, I am extremely upbeat and encouraging! I meet students where they are and seek to make lessons enjoyable as well as challenging. I am absolutely passionate about bluegrass and old-time music! I began playing viola in 1972 at age 9, switched to fiddle (violin) in 2003, and have been performing in bands as a bluegrass fiddler ever since! Teaching is in my blood, as I was a full-time high school English teacher for 32 years prior to my recent retirement. I've been teaching fiddle students for the past five years, and have helped many beginning and intermediate students learn how to play songs and continue building their skills. I work primarily with training by ear, but can also help students learn to read music. If you're ready to "pull out the fiddle and rosin up the bow," then give me a call!

About Julie

I've been performing as a fiddler in bluegrass bands since 2003, and have absolutely loved my own journey as a musician! A lifelong musician, I started on viola at age 9 and played in school orchestra through high school and on into college, even as I earned my degree in secondary English Education

Julie is absolutely wonderful! She’s extremely patient and very talented. I was only able to take fiddling lessons for a relatively short amount of time (less than a year) but I feel that I walked away with an excellent start. Can not recommend enough!
Jennifer
Julie is an amazing fiddle teacher! It is intimidating to take lessons as an adult and she made me feel very comfortable from day one. She is fun and has a laid-back, warm personality. I highly recommend her to anyone wanting to learn fiddle!
Ally
Julie is an amazing teacher! She tells you what you need to improve in a gentle way and is always enthusiastic about any progress you make, no matter how small.

Anna is amazing! For the past two years, she has provided individual cello instruction to our 10th grader. She is patient, kind, and easily able to share her knowledge and skills with her students. Under her guidance he has improved his technique and gained valuable experience at his recitals. She has also helped him prepare pieces for his auditions at CCA and SDYS. Highly recommend!
Kevin
Anna is a wonderful teacher. She allows me as a parent (and encourages) to attend lessons so i can be her proxy during the week to reinforce lessons taught; this helps with continuous week to week progress. She demands a lot of my child in terms of warm-ups drills, site reading, rhythm, intonation, and sound. She is rigorous in terms of proper technique, training, and demands playing "beautifully" (with emotion). When things get too tough she takes a step back and gets back to the basics, focusing on advancing through a piece note by note, measure by measure. The end result is fantastic and often get featured in concert performances several times a year. My child has grown tremendously since starting with Ms. Anna; he had a previous teacher and picked up a lot of bad habits that we had to engineer out. He now is playing at a high level as a 10 year old having been with Ms. Anna for ~2 years. He has grown through each piece, taking his time. There is no pressure to move onto new pieces until each piece has been mastered. His maturity, self-confidence and work ethic have all grown because of cello. It has been a tremendous pleasure to learn from Ms. Anna, not to mention see her perform in the San Diego symphony. She is a true professional who understands how to work with kids but also pull the best out of them!

I have been a professional touring and session guitarist for over 10 years, and a professional educator for 15. I have a degree in performance/composition from the Berklee College of Music, and throughout my teaching career I have placed students in several accredited collegiate music programs including USC and Cal Arts. I am a full time member of the band Lukas Graham and have toured internationally and performed to crowds upwards of 20,000 people. My career as a session musician across my credit list has yielded over 600,000,000 streams on Spotify alone.
When you study with me I spend the required time to get to know your current level of skill, the goals you’d like to achieve on the instrument, the style(s) you’d like to focus on, and most importantly the way in which you learn and retain information most effectively as an individual so that I can design lessons that cater to you as specifically as possible. "Laura has been a great teacher for my 6 year-old daughter (starting taking lessons when she was 5). She is endlessly patient and has a perfect balance of fun and instruction in all her lessons. She helped us every step of the way--picking out the right rental instrument, finding extra workbooks that would be fun, coming up with ways to make practicing at home enticing. Laura is made to be a fiddle teacher--she has a obvious passion both for the music and sharing it with her students. My daughter left every lesson with Laura beaming with pride. I'd recommend anyone searching for a teacher to go with Laura!"

"Jon is helping me to relearn the clarinet after many (47!) years of not playing. I wish I had half the brain power I did back then. But he's very encouraging. My goal is to play with a concert band just a couple of months from now, so he's customizing my lessons to meet that goal. When I encounter challenges, he's very good at explaining ways to overcome those challenges. I really like working with Jon and feel lucky to have found such a good teacher."

She is very passionate about her teaching, and it shows in each lesson. As a beginner in piano, she has been able to keep her interest by helping her play songs that she likes and listens to on the radio. This means a lot to my daughter. "I just relocated to the Henderson area. I have been banging out cowboy chords on a guitar for years, but recently got my first electric and a burning desire to learn some lead, blues, CW riffs and better technique, knowledge and command of the fret board. After interviewing and meeting with 4 other teachers, I am happy to report I chose Jeff. Jeff knows his stuff, is prepared, is respectful of my time and efforts, is knowledgeable about music, music theory, guitar technique and can effectively transfer his knowledge to a student in the way that particular student learns. All while having fun! Prior to my first lesson Jeff asked me for examples of what I'd like to learn. At my first lesson he had a notebook prepared with fundamental technique for me to practice, music tabbed out that I had mentioned, and a lot of good material for me to practice. I was playing some cool stuff immediately. My wife was surprised not to hear the usual from me when I got home. Jeff is knowledgeable in all forms of guitar - classical to heavy mental. I chose Jeff for his skill and knowledge, his approach to teaching and for what seemed would be a fun learning experience. I chose well and I can comfortably commend Jeff Colvin to anyone wishing to learn and improve on the guitar."
