About Azuri
Learning is one of my main pursuits. My name is Azuri and I have studied music for over a decade and have my degree in guitar performance from musicians institute. I've had the gift of studying many artistic crafts and spend my time today trying to further my own study, while sharing what I've learned with my students.

Art is one of the most important tools we have as a culture and contains in it a shared history, tradition and the keys to future ones. Whether it be through the primal qualities of music or the impulses of dance, the records of drawing or descriptions of writing, these are the tools for our expression. I have had the great fortune to study, in many different settings, a small piece of these traditions and sharing them is paramount in respect to receiving them. I love sharing knowledge and I hope to elevate yours as a st
udent.

Teaching Philosophy -

My teaching philosophy is built on well rounded communication, explanation and examples. So, that a student can truly understand and learn a topic, surrounded in a very humorous, light and supportive environment.
Along with being provided good information, a student learns better and feels more motivated to learn when there is a balance of positive support and confidence building accompanied by constructive criticism and examples/information that can help a student assess what ever walls they may be meeting in their musical growth.

I understand that all students/artists have different goals they wish to achieve. So it is very important to me to accommodate each individuals needs and wants to help them grow in the fields they wish too; However, In that I have played music for a long time, I understand there are certain things that a student may not have been exposed to yet; It is important that while focusing on a students artistic goals they respect and are open to the suggestion and guidance of their teacher.

I truly believe music has an amazing influence on the world and has the ability to change peoples way of thinking. Therefore, I try and keep an open awareness to all music, so that I can understand all different musical languages utilized to communicate to people, and I don't believe I will ever know them all. I hold it to attention to influence my students somewhat similarly so that they can shape the landscape of how we communicate musically in the future.

I also try and be very patient with my students. Knowing that when I feel rushed, it makes information more difficult to comprehend, remember and allocate. I love watching the gears run in my students head, so I try and provide information that pushes a student but is within their abilities.

HUMOR is very important. I like to break people out of their shell by telling a joke and hopefully getting one back, so they feel more comfortable and free. One of a Artists worst enemies are nerves. Keeping things light-hearted and maybe even a little small talk can be very helpful to a students development and growth on a topic. After all, Art is meant to be fun and we should enjoy every moment of it, in fact we should enjoy every moment in life period.

I understand music requires focus and discipline and I have certain expectation of a student to understand that and practice. You can't buy chops, you can't buy music theory etc. you can get help but eventually your the one who must understand it and play it.

I am here to help you. Based on what I know and what I have extensively studied, I will do all that I can to help you achieve your musical goals. I am here to answer your questions and help you grow. I love teaching because I love sharing knowledge; As long as your seek it, it is here for you. Otherwise, I'd still love to hear some jokes.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm very disciplined but am also very light hearted. It's important for me to assess things seriously, so that one can understand a topic or piece of information.

I generate my lessons based on the individuals needs and therefore draw from various curriculums, sources and examples, such as : MI curriculum for ear training, Theory, Single string Technique, Reading, Rhythm guitar, Ted Greenes Chord Chemistry, Berklee Guitar Method, as well as The Real Book, other artist books(Eric Clapton, etc.) The Guitar Players Hand Book, Bach pieces and self developed curriculums, relative to the topic at hand and students personal goals, amongst many others.

-Beginning students within three months of consistent lessons should have the ability to solo and playing chords to songs that they are interested in and songs provided in the lesson along with a basic understanding of the major scale and its relationship to all of the diatonic music.

-intermediate students should have an elevated understanding of scale and chord patters along with the theory that explains modal relationships and use of these concepts.

-Advanced students should learn all of diatonic scale shapes and modes assuming they don't already know them in which case their specifically situation will be assessed

-Professional students I expect to have specific questions therefore where they grow should be largely subjective.

Overall, in a short amount of time on a scale of 1 - 10 I expect to in three months at-least elevate a students musical abilities one full point if not more.

Azuri is a fun teacher!

I love working with Azuri. He is patient and encourages me. Everytime I have a lesson he says something that opens my eyes. It usually just takes that one meaningful statement he says throughout the lesson for the time there to be worth it all. Moreover, he is a great teacher! It's very fun learning from him.

About Glenn
I have been active in the entertainment industry since the age of 12, when I gave my first professional performance. Prior to that I was already being introduced to music with years of guitar, and then vocal instruction. I do not remember a time of my life when I was not singing somewhere; in the house, in the yard, in the classroom. That is perhaps why I identify so well with the young people who gather so much enjoyment from "just singing" at every opportunity. I studied professionally for over 10 years with renown soprano and voice teacher Sylvia Jensen, who was instrumental in the enhancement of my vocal knowledge and technique. She is now the Director of Education for the Miss Ohio pageants of the Miss America competitions, elevating many young ladies to the national spotlight. At age 14, I auditioned for, and was added to cast of a
network television variety program, "The Gene Carroll Show", that was a television institution for over 30 years in the Midwest. I was a featured performer on that program for over 7 years, all the while perfecting the art of "playing to a camera." This experience was invaluable, and the knowledge I gathered is now included in my curriculum. I also began performing a solo act in the nightclub circuit at the age of 15, performing up and down the "north coast" from Cleveland, OH, (my home), to Erie. PA. At a very young age, I learned the difficult art of choosing musical material and pacing a show; also adapting to performing under a myriad of conditions with a vast array of musical accompaniment. After graduating college with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing, I assembled my own band, and took to the road. That experience eventually brought the act to Las Vegas in 1982. Over the years my show has been a staple in major casino cabarets in Las Vegas, and all over Nevada. Since my first engagement at The Landmark Hotel in the early 1980's, I have literally been up and down the famed Las Vegas Strip many times over. The Desert Inn, The Dunes, The Stardust, The Maxim, The Tropicana, New York New York, Mandalay Bay, MGM, Bally's, The Flamingo, The Imperial Palace, The Four Queens, The Golden Nugget, The Fremont, The Venetian, The Palazzo, and a three year engagement at The Riviera. My show is truly comprised of musical variety; classics, show tunes, jazz, rock, blues, r&b, country. Even a presentation of "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera, that I perform in full costume. It is this ability to successfully deliver an extensive repertoire that I am enthusiastic about passing along to the next generation of entertainers.

I have been truly blessed in my career to have experienced so many highlights; too many to document. From winning an understudy roll in the Broadway Musical "Platinum" starring Hollywood actress Alexis Smith, to performing our National Anthem at events ranging from Major League Baseball to ESPN Boxing to receptions for major dignitaries, to recording 7 albums and a full-length video, to being asked to perform for Mr. Frank Sinatra at the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf Tournament, I have lived a full life on stage, learning and absorbing every bit of knowledge gathered along the way.
Now it is my desire to escalate my status as an educator to a more "one on one" experience; availing myself the opportunity to pass along that wealth of knowledge to individual students who aspire to enjoy the entertainment profession as I have, providing them with the skills needed to successfully compete. Or, should it be their choice not to pursue entertainment as a vocation, to gain a working understanding of all facets of their instrument so as to gain a better appreciation of music. Whatever the goal of the student, I feel that I am equipped to provide them with the tools needed to achieve that goal.

*** Lesson Details ***
Content of Sessions

Generally, the first 10-15 minutes of each lesson will be focused on vocal warm up and exercise. (For guitar students, we will review the previous
week's assignment). For Vocal Students, it is understood that the voice mechanism is made up of muscles, and as an athlete prepares for a sporting event, a singer must prepare to vocalize. It is at this time in our lesson when the student will develop good habits of voice maintenance, which will serve them well throughout their careers. The proper care and preservation of the vocal unit cannot be stressed enough, especially for pubescent and pre-pubescent students. Vocal chords in a developmental stage are most susceptible to damage, and because they are particularly sensitive, they must be handled with care. Our warm up regimen is designed to strengthen as well as preserve the singing voice.

I am not an advocate of getting too involved and "bogged down" in the technical aspects of singing, especially with the young students, and
especially early in our program. This is not to say that breath control, tonality, pitch, etc. are not vital to good singing, because these workings are ESSENTIAL, and their application will certainly be incorporated into our studies. Some instructors, on occasion, have a tendency to lose sight of the fact that much to do with singing happens "naturally", and too much focus on the "technical" can actually be inhibiting. This can alter a beautiful, natural tone into one that is unnatural and contrived.

I adhere to the philosophy that above all else, SINGERS WANT TO SING SONGS, and musicians-in-training want to play music. That is our focus, and all of our training is conceived with that objective in mind. All the technical knowledge and coaching serves no purpose without practical application. It is my belief that the most significant progress occurs when a vocalist is singing a song.

Nearly every element of instruction can be utilized in the performance of one song. This is why the majority of our session time will be spent "in song". For the very young student, we will concentrate our efforts with the students choices of favorite and familiar songs. The older students will undoubtedly have favorite songs, styles and artists. Special attention will be paid to the genre most enjoyed by the student, but diversity will be emphasized as well, and a variety of genres will be unpacked and explored. I believe that whatever a student's musical goals and aspirations, it is in their best interest to gain knowledge and insight in all facets of music, singing, and performance.

The most vital pre-requisite for any student is their enthusiasm. My ambition will be to harness that enthusiasm and channel it productively through stimulating instruction. Our sessions will be informative and educational, but always predicated upon "having fun with music".

I am proud to feature a curriculum that emphasizes the entertainment aspect of singing as well as the technical; created to benefit all ages and experience levels, from beginner to seasoned professional. After just weeks of my "Triple Threat Training" a student will begin to see astounding results: vocally, musically, and in the art of performance. I am excited to share my knowledge with you. Let's get started!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is equipped with a full vocal sound system with microphones that I utilize to teach the valuable art of mic technique. Young students enjoy using the mics and hearing themselves sing and perform. Since our lessons are predicated on enjoying the art of singing, this opportunity has proven invaluable. For the advanced performer, studying all aspects of amplification and what a singer should know about their stage sound is a part of our educational curriculum. My studio is furnished with the equipment that is essential to mastering that knowledge.
Since the practical aspect of my course is based on singing songs, I provide all the latest technology required to allow my students the opportunity to sing the songs of their choosing, with and without the lead vocal tracks. I feel that when students are singing their favorite songs, it offers me the greatest teaching opportunities. I make certain the every musical genre can be represented, and feel I have the knowledge and ability to guide the student is whatever their musical tastes. My studio is also equipped with piano (for vocal exercises), and guitars, which gives me opportunity to accompany my students when the musical moment is appropriate. Steven B. is an exceptional piano teacher. He knows how to motivate and encourage a student, and is very accommodating with regard to a student's particular interests.
One of his most outstanding teaching features is that he has an entirely unique approach to ear training (playing by ear). He creates customized playing-by-ear, step-by-step, walk-through recordings--which he professionally produces in his home studio.
These recordings break down a piece in such a way which allows a student to learn how to recognize intervals, chords, chord inversions, melodic lines, and more.
I cannot emphasize enough the (often under-appreciated) value of such ear training for students at all levels.

Of course it is more enjoyable if you can have lessons in person. But with modern technology, live online lessons come in a close second. I've been teaching for 40 years and I've been doing online lessons for about 7 years. I'm located in West Hills, which is a suburb of Los Angeles. If you are not local, using skype with a webcam works out surprisingly well. I have students in Sydney, London, Hong Kong and many cities throughout the US.

*** Use a Piano or a Keyboard for Practicing ***
I am not fussy if you use a keyboard but it needs to be a "weighted action" keyboard, so that it feels similar to a real piano. Ideally, you should also have a pedal and a stand if you are using an electronic keyboard.

*** Unconventional Approach ***
Each student is taught with a customized approach. You get to tell me what areas you want to focus on. Sometimes there may be a block or something that is a weakness that you need to bolster. Sometimes it is a narrow niche within music that you want to give your attention to. One way that I'm unconventional is that I actually have found that it is NOT better if you practice every day. I recommend that you build in about three days of rest per week. Just like people who work out at the gym learn that the off days are when the muscles regenerate, the same is true for your brain. This allows your subconscious mind to do its job and your progress will actually be faster, not slower. Another example of my unique approach is how I treat beginners. Even though you may not yet read music very well or at all, it doesn't mean that you can't start working concurrently on a more advanced piece. This is because READING notation is a comparatively slow process, but why should we restrict your ability to play something that you love to your rate of reading music? Usually, our FINGER TECHNIQUE develops much faster than our READING so I'm happy to guide you on one or two more difficult pieces and help spoon-feed it to you, bit by bit, "by rote."

I feel grateful that my own training included top teachers of both the “German School” and “Russian School” of piano technique. Generally, the German School teaches how to play with close-to-the-key hand placement preparation and fingering efficiency, and is known for great speed and accuracy. The Russian School teaches how to play with gravity and relaxation and is known for beautiful tone production. Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses. In my own playing and teaching, I have incorporated the good aspects of each and have discarded the bad. Howard's approach is patient while at the same time he actually leads my son forward - not just listening to what he practiced that week. Howard does not make the weekly lesson a "test" but rather a session to work together and my son enjoys the lessons instead of worrying if he prepared enough.

We moved from Los Angeles so we chose to transition from lessons in Howard's house to weekly lessons online - it continues to work beautifully.

Howard can accommodate any style of student - I know because I took lessons from Howard myself until my work built up too much to continue.

I recommend Howard without any reservation.

Folks, I'm excited to write this review for a true master in piano pedagogy and so many other skills! Howard is worthy of the title! In all my years that I have taken lessons from teacher at universities and privately, I've never come across someone with the genius and in-depth philosophy that Howard has. You may think this may be some fluff to help a guy out but my words will still not be enough to quantify the abilities of this man! I went from having severe arthritis in my wrists from playing with terrible technique to never having problems again and experiencing a huge leap in my playing abilities!

If you want to experience a paradigm shift in your playing, get ready to open yourself to a new way of thinking and playing that will lift you up! If your attitude to learn matches Howard's abilities to teach you will not believe the progress you will make. Its true what they say, when you are ready the master will come! I hope you are ready because Howard is the real deal!!!

I have a simple, no-nonsense approach to vocal training, helping students build the vocal strength and coordination necessary to sing efficiently, using principles and exercises learned through over a decade of intensive vocal study in NYC.

Please be advised that I expect students to learn their music on their own (although I'll certainly give you some learning strategies, help with tricky passages, etc.). If you are looking for someone to "teach you the notes," I'm probably not who you're looking for. But, if you want to learn how to sing well and are willing to put in the work, I'd love to help you achieve your goals!

My name is Ted D. and I have been teaching private lessons in both guitar and voice for over a decade. I began playing guitar at age eleven and continued into college, where I majored in guitar performance. While in college I began studying voice seriously, adding a vocal performance major to my degree. I moved to New York City for additional vocal training, and sang leading roles in many opera productions in the NY/NJ area.

I currently serve as Director of Music and Worship at HOPE Presbyterian Church in North Raleigh, and my performance experience ranges from playing and singing in rock bands and as a solo acoustic act to performing in opera houses and concert halls with symphony orchestras. “If you can sing opera you can sing anything.” This is something I learned while taking vocal lessons with Ted Dougherty. Many voice teachers aim to silo you into one style of singing but that is not the case with Ted. He will help you build your voice to be the strongest it can be while encouraging you to practice and sing the types of music you are passionate about. Ted is an extremely talented musician who not only has the knowledge to teach you new techniques, but also has the ability to demonstrate those techniques. I started voice lessons with him when I was 12 years old and only ended my lessons with him when I went away to college years later. I truly believe, were it not for my lessons with Ted, I would not have the quality voice I have today. If I lived anywhere near Raleigh, NC, nothing would be able to stop me from going for voice lessons with Ted as often as possible.

If you are a singer, do yourself a favor and get lessons with Ted! I took voice lessons with him for two years it's been quite the game changer. I've been a singer since I was 6 and have had a lot of different vocal training and Ted's lessons were unlike any other. I never expected the techniques. They are designed to make you re-conceptualize how to make the sound until your voice is in the right place. The first few months of lessons were unlearning and really strange because it seemed like he was telling me to make ugly sounds most of the time. Later I realized how foundational and fundamental these practices are for a strong and healthy voice. If you stick with it, and practice regularly on your own, you will be able to do what you thought was not possible with your voice. Like perform Queen of the Night, or Defying Gravity, or Carry Underwood. It's been amazing to transform my voice so drastically, and I would never have gotten there without these lessons.

INCREDIBLE, HELPFUL, AND ALL AROUND AMAZING TEACHER! Not enough good things to say about Adam. He knows his craft, is extremely talented, and knows how to communicate in a way that makes it easy to understand and improve in just a few short lessons. A very patient and kind person who has helped my singing and stage presence tremendously. Highly recommended!

I highly recommend Adam as a voice teacher.
My 10 year old daughter Spencer has been wanting to take a lesson for so long she's always singing Disney songs around the house, and finally I thought, why not give it a go.
When I first met Adam his smile was infectious, and I could already tell he knew what he was doing, and this was the right choice.
He sat down at the piano we have at home, and began doing scale work, within minutes time, I could already see that Emily was already enjoying the lesson.
They worked learning "For the First Time In Forever" together, and Emily now sings both parts, and very well/on pitch might I add.
Spencer takes lessons from Adam bi weekly, and is always anxious for him to come and share his knowledge with her.
I couldn't recommend him enough!

I had never had a voice lesson before in my life, and wanted to try this out as I have always been interested in singing.
I had one lesson with Adam, and now take lessons with him multiple times a month. He has not only helped me gain confidence in my vocal ability, but continues to provide fantastic training, and I feel my voice getting stronger with each lesson. I had no idea that I had an upper register, nor did I understand what that meant prior to working with Adam.
I can proudly say I am finding my voice more and more everyday.
He has shown me that anyone can truly be a singer.
