Number one is we always have fun, though we do a lot of hard work too! Lessons are split between technical/theoretical music study, and live performance practice. Emphasis is on gaining skills in coordination and dexterity, understanding the theory behind compositions, and finding individual expression with each piece. Technique exercises follow the Dozen A Day series; Lessons, Sight-Reading, and Theory from Faber & Faber; skills are applied to a performance song of the students' choosing. Students generally select a song at their level in either Classical, Jazz or Contemporary style. All students are required to practice at least 5 mins a day, every day. Each performance piece is later performed live in concert.

As a music teacher I have a great love and passion for music theory. I feel like it is such an important part of learning any musical instrument that so many students seem to struggle with. I like to take a fun but structured approach to learning music theory. I work with each individual student to help them develop personal goals to work towards whether that is working through a theory book, preparing for a theory exam, polishing their ear training or even just strengthening what they already know. I hope to help you take your music theory knowledge to the next level!

You can start with a shorter lesson duration, and gradually extend the playing time based on their level of motivation.
TakeLessons makes it easy to find teachers who specialize in providing music lessons for kids. Simply pick your child’s favorite instrument above and browse our listings of professional music teachers. You can then read a particular teacher’s profile, check out the reviews, and send them an introductory message. This allows you to have complete confidence in the teacher that you pick.
