About Jennifer
My name is Jennifer. I got my degree in vocal performance and minored in Jazz. I began voice lessons myself when I was eight. I am a mezzo soprano, and can teach both female and male voices. I have performed in several opera productions including but not limited to The Marriage of Figaro, Dido and Aeneus, Tenderland, and Hand of Bridge. I have worked and performed in masterworks by Brahms, Chopin, Mozart to name a few. I studied in French, English, Spanish, Italian, and German. I studied diction, ear training, piano, music history, pedagogy, and music theory. I have also performed with artists such as New York Voices, Bobby Mcferrin and Kurt Elling. I was blessed with many learning opportunities to grow in my passion and I would love to pass that knowledge and passion to anyone who wants to learn.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are de
signed around the needs of each student. The first lessons is always spent testing range, knowledge and abilities already known by the student. Then the student weighs in on what kind of music they would like to learn and what they hope to gain from the lessons. Theory and ear training are incorporated into the lessons. We work on breathing, technique and style. Generally we start with English or Italian. We work on vocal performance from a classical standpoint but Jazz and Broadway can also be taught if desired by the student. Scales and exercises are given each week to be worked on until the next lesson. A recording device is encouraged if the student cannot play the piano. Also, a voice note book to take notes during the lesson to be used during practice during the week.

*** Specialties ***
classical voice and jazz voice.

I bring Jon Hendricks's "talking on tones" method to voice lessons. I studied with the legendary Yolande Bavan, who taught me to bring what I have to music. I love bringing that same knowledge to my students.

About Dunia

I work with beginner students to teach them the fundamentals of singing. I like to use a range of music that is both customized to the individuals interested yet still presents and educational challenge for the student. During the lessons I focus on proper posture and technique, note recognition, ear training, and harmony in order to enable my students to have proper control and a solid understanding of their voice.

About Taryn
I am a University of Hawaii Piano Performance Major with a training emphasis in classical piano. I have taken multiple AMEB piano examinations, as well as performed in various recitals, culminating in an undergraduate music certification. I have been playing for 20 years, working with a variety of musical and performance styles, including individual performance, accompaniment, and musical collaboration. These experiences have given me the skills to tackle and communicate musical themes and ideas to students with a range of learning styles and needs, from beginning to advanced, classical to leisure.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is very dependent upon the need of the individual student. I believe that each person learns differently, and different people require unique methods of communication (visual, aural, descriptive), as
well as structure of classes. In addition, I understand that students are hoping to gain different things from learning any instrument. Given this, I really try to cater to what a student wants, and how they learn best. However, I also believe that no student can learn and advance without an understanding of theory and development of technique. I generally use the Piano Adventures curriculum with my beginning students, however for intermediate and advanced students, I prefer to allow more freedom in the pieces that are learned. While studying with me, you can expect to develop technique through the study of classical music, gain an advanced understanding of music theory, and develop the ability to not only play well, but to perform well too!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upright Yamaha piano in common area w/ seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to provide the piano or keyboard for practicing. The students should be responsible for getting the proper music books necessary for teaching.

*** Specialties ***
The genre I am most experience with is classical music.

I am very happy taking voice lessons with Lilly as evidenced by me willing to drive an hour to see her. She has a lot of knowledge and experience in singing and therefore understands my needs so that I can produce what she asks me to. I had no singing ability in the beginning and I was so embarrassed by my voice I couldn't even sing when I was alone. Now, I feel encouraged by the progress I have made and would highly recommend Lilly as a voice instructor.

Everyone can sing. You may just not know how yet. I have taught hundreds of people who were sure they couldn't sing, had been told by others they were terrible singers and within an hour, maybe less, they realize they CAN! They just had to learn how.

And everyone SHOULD sing.

About Susan
Acting – I have taught all kinds of acting, including Audition Skills, Shakespeare, Stage, Film & TV, Dramatic, Comedic, whatever. I also have quite a bit of experience performing in all those arenas. I have a relationship with one of the best management agencies in the area, so my students get fast-tracked with her.

Voice – Anyone can sing. If you want to and have always thought you couldn't, you will be delighted when I prove you wrong. Training for the voice is pretty much the same, whatever style you are interested in. Then I'll coach you in your chosen style and we'll pick songs you like.

Singing beautifully is not enough. I can't tell you how many times I heard in grad school "beautiful voices are a dime a dozen." I will teach you how to OWN the song. That's what keeps people coming back.

Speaking – Every public spe
aker I know has lost their voice at some point, but not from talking too much. It's because they don't know how to use their voice properly. Learn that, and you need never lose your voice to over-use. That's easy to teach.

Writing – I have been a professional writer and editor for over eight years, with many books, articles, posts, newsletters, etc. to my name. I use – and teach – practical grammar, not just correct grammar. I can also help you make your words more powerful.

I did not know what to expect when I signed up to take classes with Susan. I decided to take classes with her for two reasons: Her studio is not far from me and 2, the good reviews left by her clients. All I wanted was to learn the fundamentals and techniques about acting. Susan was excellent and very patient. She offered water in each lesson, which is also very kind. Her interpersonal connection brings a sense of comfort. Her studio is very neat and welcoming. I do not have regrets in my selections and I know you won't be disappointed too.

I've had experience working with both beginners looking to sing for enjoyment as well as coaching aspiring professionals to refine their craft and move ahead with career goals! I tailor lessons according to your goals while also helping you discover and fulfill your maximum potential. I establish and maintain a calm, safe space for us to explore your voice without pressure or judgment, and encourage your insights and creativity.

I also emphasize the importance of overall musicianship for singers so that they have deeper understanding and appreciation for their musical selection. This can include learning to sight sing, transposing songs to your correct key, accurately communicating preferred tempo and rhythmic feel to other musicians, writing charts in order to work with live bands and so on.

About Rachel
A graduate of Duke Ellington School for the Arts and the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Rachel Panay is a 6 time Billboard Club charting singer/songwriter in the Dance music genre. She recently returned to her musical theatre roots appearing as Rose in Theatre Lab's production of The Secret Garden. Rachel is also a Wolftrap resident teaching artist in DC schools and has been commissioned by Wolftrap to create and perform her original children's performance piece, Jazz Cat/Blues Kitty. She leads worship music weekly at Luther Place Memorial Church and sings with community gospel choir, The Ambassadors of Praise.

As teacher, Rachel is warm, friendly & energetic. Her passion for every facet of music is expressed in her desire to impart that same appreciation to her students. She tailors lessons according to the individual st
udent's goals and interests. With younger students, Rachel communicates regularly with parents so they can work together to get the most out of lessons!

Rachel really put my 12 year old daughter at ease. We only purchased five lessons to work on my daughter's role in a musical. Rachel helped her immensely and gave her the vocal self-confidence she needed. In addition to her vocal talents, her stage experience was a big plus. Hopefully, we'll be able to continue with lessons in the near future.

Max holds a BA in Classical Vocal Performance, but enjoys all genres. In addition to performing with professional choral ensembles around the country and doing occasional solo work, Max also enjoys singing folk and R&B. Lessons focus on body mechanics, musicality, ear training, and music reading.

About Max
Come learn a first, second, or even third instrument! In addition to voice, Max specializes in multi-instrumentalism and fluency between genres. Many of Max's students learn at least two instruments, and for very good reason! Learning multiple instruments (and styles/genres) increases one's musical ability and understanding of the big picture in ways that a single focus simply can't. It's comparable to learning multiple languages. There's also time and a place to buckle down on technique and to focus on one thing exclusively, and Max is mindful of this as well. In his lessons, he creates new exercises to address each student's specific needs and keeps the focus narrow enough to avoid a distracting information overload.

Most importantly, Max teaches through questions, in the spirit of "teach a man to fish...." This allows students
to gain a degree of self sufficiency and an appetite for discovery. Lessons are fun, personal, efficient (and at times, just inefficient enough to feel comfy), and relaxed. Max's teaching space features classic instruments and amps, including a vintage Fender Rhodes, and a full featured recording studio. It's a perfect environment for learning and creativity, and it's also a short walk to all of Hampden's best shops and restaurants.

Outside of teaching, Max actively performs as a classical/early music singer, and does regular session work on vocals, bass, guitar, trumpet, and keys. He also composes for film, and runs a mobile recording business specializing in classical, acoustic, and jazz. His work has taken him both around the country and overseas.

I earned my B.A. in music from Hood College and have studied with Elaine Bonazzi in New York and Ruth Drucker in Baltimore. I sang opera professionally in my twenties and have been teaching private voice lessons for fifteen years. Many of my students have gone on to music conservatories or universities for vocal performance (classical and musical theater), but if you are just looking to have fun singing that is great, too!

About Marie
I earned my B.A. in music from Hood College and have been teaching private voice/piano lessons and general music in schools for the past fifteen years. I sang opera professionally in my twenties and early thirties, and have taught both the young beginner who just likes to sing for fun and the serious musician preparing for a career in music. I also teach beginning piano and particularly enjoy working with children (I am a preschool teacher by day). If your child is interested in learning to play the piano, this is a great first step; thanks to my background in working with young children, I understand how to pace a lesson to keep a young child interested in sitting still on a piano bench for thirty minutes straight ;)

If you are interested in piano lessons, please have either a real piano or weighted keyboard at home for practice. You
will also need to purchase a few music books (about $5 each). Voice students will need to purchase song books ($15-20) after we meet and I get a feel for the student’s range and what type of repertoire we should work on.
