*** Lesson Details ***
All of my lessons are tailored to the interest of the student! Although I come from a strict technical background, I believe that the love of music and performance comes from experimenting and being creative! In a lesson with me, I suggest repertoire but if something is not working it is never a problem to redirect and find the right path for the student! With the wealth of my experience having been in over 45 musicals, opera's and other productions I can teach and guide the student through any performance and musical interest they may have and bridge the gap between genre's that so many are unable to do.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room, computer, keyboard, couch.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the students to provide a piano and or instrument of choice, and purchase method books and other repertoire.

*** Specialties ***
I am expert in any type of vocal style, as I have an extensive background in musical theatre, pop as well as opera. I also have a great ability to teach Music Theory, something I love and something I do very well at. Like I said previously I have been in over 45 musical theatre/straight theatre and Opera productions, so I can teach acting as well as performance. I have also written over 50 songs for guitar and voice and performed with a local band in Santa Barbara, CA , so I have a lot of experience as a songwriter and guitar and can teach those as well too.

We are lucky to have found her!!!

Around a year ago, my daughter decided she wanted to learn to play the guitar! Thanks to Google, we ran into TakeLessons.
Nicole was recommended to us. After reading about her we were quite impressed!
Right after the first lesson and to my surprise, my (very shy) daughter had a great 1st experience with Nicole.
Nicole is a professional in her field AND also in handling kids and knowing how to help them overcome their shyness. She brings out the best in my daughter and also encourages her to sing even write her own notes!
I would highly recommend Nicole. She is truly talented and the greatest teacher!!!

I'm a firm believer in having fun while training. This is very important! Along with fun, we must also be able to work hard at perfecting our craft. I always tell my students that this is a time to work hard, study and learn as much as possible so that when opportunity knocks, you are ready to answer. 😊

About Detrece
DeTrece "Dee" Lavender is a native of Miami, Florida. When her family moved to Sarasota, she was afforded the opportunity to study music and the performing arts as a student of the Westcoast School/Henry L. Porter School of Music. It was then that Dee began to understand the power of the creative arts as an effective form of emotional expression and release. By middle school, DeTrece began fine tuning her natural talents by studying classical voice which earned her several starring roles in the Sarasota Youth Opera, The Aslo Theater and the Players Theater. She is also a proud former member of the Westcoast Black Theater Troop in Sarasota, FL. Under the caring leadership of these opportunities, she was able to combine musical and life experiences in order to offer a more well rounded educational and musical experience for her students.

She was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she received a dual Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy and Vocal Performance (Class of 2003). It was through her service as a music therapist, Millieu (residential) counselor and music teacher in the Boston City Public Schools/Greater Boston Metropolitan Area, that she began to feel the call toward a greater understanding of the gravity and role of the socio-emotional needs of students (and their families/villages) in urban settings. This call brought her to Baltimore, MD where she enrolled in the Pastoral Counseling Masters of Science program at Loyola University. In addition to her studies, she currently teaches Elementary and Middle School choir/ Musicianship teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools through the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids Program. She also serves as Minister Of Music and Arts at two local churches.

Everyone can sing. You may just not know how yet. I have taught hundreds of people who were sure they couldn't sing, had been told by others they were terrible singers and within an hour, maybe less, they realize they CAN! They just had to learn how.

And everyone SHOULD sing.

About Susan
Acting – I have taught all kinds of acting, including Audition Skills, Shakespeare, Stage, Film & TV, Dramatic, Comedic, whatever. I also have quite a bit of experience performing in all those arenas. I have a relationship with one of the best management agencies in the area, so my students get fast-tracked with her.

Voice – Anyone can sing. If you want to and have always thought you couldn't, you will be delighted when I prove you wrong. Training for the voice is pretty much the same, whatever style you are interested in. Then I'll coach you in your chosen style and we'll pick songs you like.

Singing beautifully is not enough. I can't tell you how many times I heard in grad school "beautiful voices are a dime a dozen." I will teach you how to OWN the song. That's what keeps people coming back.

Speaking – Every public spe
aker I know has lost their voice at some point, but not from talking too much. It's because they don't know how to use their voice properly. Learn that, and you need never lose your voice to over-use. That's easy to teach.

Writing – I have been a professional writer and editor for over eight years, with many books, articles, posts, newsletters, etc. to my name. I use – and teach – practical grammar, not just correct grammar. I can also help you make your words more powerful.

I did not know what to expect when I signed up to take classes with Susan. I decided to take classes with her for two reasons: Her studio is not far from me and 2, the good reviews left by her clients. All I wanted was to learn the fundamentals and techniques about acting. Susan was excellent and very patient. She offered water in each lesson, which is also very kind. Her interpersonal connection brings a sense of comfort. Her studio is very neat and welcoming. I do not have regrets in my selections and I know you won't be disappointed too.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Sammy? He is very good at what he does. He is patient, gentle, encouraging, but firm. He listens to what your goals are and guides you in getting there...and I've only had 2 lessons with him. I am a classically trained singer, and I prioritize health above all else when teaching voice. As a soloist, I work with students to improve their abilities to sing confidently and technically efficient by themselves. I teach everything from standard operatic repertoire, musical theater (helping them get roles like Cinderella from "Into the Woods" and Gabriella from "High School Musical"), popular music, and much more. I love learning from my students and their interests.

About Madeline
Hello! I'm Madeline, and I'm a vocal performance and music theory pedagogy major at Peabody Institute. I've been a music theory tutor since Fall 2014, and teaching private voice lessons since January 2015. I love introducing students to new repertoire, showing them a different way of looking at concepts, and helping students realize how smart and talented they are. I want my students to feel prepared for where their love of music takes them, and we are absolutely going to have fun while learning. I'm excited that you are interested in learning, too, and I cannot wait to hear from you.

I have been taking singing lessons with Madeline for a while now, and I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher! Her personality can make anyone feel welcome. I am very shy but she manages to get me out of my shell. I have definitely felt that my confidence has improved tremendously since I started my lessons. Madeline is also extremely talented, patient, flexible, and helpful. She can very easily explain a concept or a technique by creating an image in your head, which I find immensely useful.

I have recommended her to all my friends that are interested in taking singing lessons and plan on continue to do so, because she really is a great teacher! I am very thankful to her and always look forward to my next lesson 😊

Love music but too afraid to admit it? Always wanted to learn how to sing but never knew who to ask? I'm Zoe, I'm a voice and beginner music skills teacher and I would love to help! I have experience singing and teaching all types of music that includes gospel singing, opera, musical theater, pop music, acapella, jazz, R&B, country, choral and everything in between! I believe that voice lessons should be fun, informative, freeing and productive. I have been teaching for over 4 years and have loved every student I've had. All ages and skill levels welcome! I also teach beginner music skills such as learning to read music, understanding rhythm, music theory, sight singing, aural theory, beginner piano and solfedge. I love everything from Mozart to Adele! If you do too, shoot me a message and let's get started!

About Zoe
Hey you! I'm Zoe McCray from Alexandria,VA. I studied vocal performance at James Madison University as a music major and loved every second of it. While at JMU, I started teaching voice to high school and other college students. I have experience working with students for theater audition preparation, choral ensemble audition preparation, learning to read music, improving ear training skills, beginner piano and healthy vocal technique for all genres of music.

I majored in classical voice and have performed in over a dozen opera productions in the United States and abroad. Most recently, I traveled to Sulmona, Italy to perform the lead role in Giacomo Puccini's beloved opera "Suor Angelica". Other favorite opera roles include Fiordiligi, Berta and The Mother from Amahl and the Night Visitors. During my time at JMU I also performed and mus
ic directed many musical theater productions including 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee(Rona Lisa Peretti), Avenue Q (Music Director and Conductor) and Dogfight (Assistant Music Director and Vocal Coach).

I have over 8 years of experience in the choral music canon. While at JMU I participated in the Advanced Women's Chorus and was the soprano section leader and undergraduate leader of the James Madison Singers. I also have experience as Music Director and Choral Leader of the St Stephens UCC.

During my time at JMU I was the Music Director and arranger fir the premiere all-female acapella group Note-Oriety. My arrangement of JMU Note-Oriety's cover of Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj's"Bang Bang" was the winner of the Song of the Year at the 2016 CARA Awards in Boston, MA and I was blessed to be runner up in the country for Arranger of the Year. Additionally, my arrangement of JMU Note-Oriety's music video and cover of Beyonce's "Pretty Hurts" has amassed over half a million views on YouTube , was featured on USAToday, Buzfeed, FOX5 News and TEDTalk Charlotesville where I was a performer and speaker.

I also love and have experience singing and teaching other genres of music such as traditional and contemporary gospel music, pop music(I'm a huge pop culture junkie), jazz music, country music, R&B and neo soul music. My philosophy of teaching voice is that healthy classical voice technique can be adapted to all genres of music, always emphasizing safe voice practices. I'm very excited to start working with you and bring my blended musical experiences to you!
