There are less than a handful of Cantonese learning materials out there, and most of them are outdated. With over 9 years of teaching experience, I will help you speak the language with confidence and make sure you don't sound like a time traveler from the past. (But if you are one, hit me up!)

My students include beginners who would like to try something new; sons & daughters who wish to communicate with their family; people who are interested in Chinese culture; and professionals who want to speak fluently in business settings. Being not of college age anymore, attending my first class (private no less) was nerve wracking but exciting. Alice makes you feel so comfortable right away and was very prepared, organized, and went at a speed that was easy to follow. She tries to understand your learning goals as well as your current proficiency in order to judge how to organize the lesson. Highly recommend and looking forward to all my future classes with her!

I learned from some great musicians out west that the ukulele can be really fun and have more range of notes too when tuned GDAE as a violin would be tuned. Ever since I learned that I have loved playing the ukulele and also have fun helping others to become well versed in playing many styles of music on there. One can play rhythm, melodies, improvise, write songs, play almost any style of music on a ukulele.

About Tara

I have a Masters in Education as well as having spent many years performing, teaching in one on one and group settings both privately and at music camps and festivals. I play and teach bluegrass, old time, blues, folk, Irish, and swing jazz styles. I like my students to really enjoy playing music an

In just 2 of 5 lessons, I am already better. Tara has helped me build some basic chord theory and knowledge that I never understood as a G, C, D guitarist. I have not taken lessons since I was 10 and took piano - at 48, lessons are not so intimidating. Looking forward to learning more!
Stefan S.
Tara is a very knowledgeable and easy-going instructor. Her ability to teach theory in bite-sized chunks while keeping the lesson light and fun is extremely commendable. No grad-school music theory textbooks here, just color-coded fun. Her mnemonic devices are also hilarious. 6/5 stars

With the current COVID-19 virus crisis, I have been shifting all my students to online classes. Check out my pictures to see my online classroom set up, or feel free to send me a message if you have questions! :)

We will learn chords, strumming techniques and basic finger picking of popular songs and the classic good ol' nursery rhymes. You'll learn how to read tabs and charts, playing by ear, and even venturing into songwriting if you so desire!

I also work with a teacher whom I transition my students over to once they reach intermediate/advanced level.

"I've been singing in choirs for over 6 years and was looking for a way to get into singing in college, and I found Serena by a lucky chance and have seen her weekly since January - not only have my vocal skills and techniques improved considerably since then, but I've become a lot more confident in singing other genres.

Serena is a fantastic teacher and is very flexible with availability - she always tries to make the lessons work on your time, and as a full-time student juggling two jobs, that was exactly what I needed. Every lesson is great - it's a healthy mixture of singing, genuine conversation, and discussion of techniques and ways to become better at something I genuinely enjoy.

I would definitely recommend her to beginners and returning singers alike - she is extremely passionate about what she does, and it really pays off when you can confidently sing a brand new piece after having worked on it for just a few lessons!"
