About Curtis

I'm a friendly and patient person who strives to be really encouraging towards the student's education. I believe a good teacher will make a huge difference in the learning process. I was born and raised in Northern California. I first began studying guitar with Musicians Institute alumni Scott Allen. After three years of private lessons, I attended and completed my training from Musicians Institute(G.I.T) with a certificate in guitar performance. At the Musicians Institute, I was instructed by Keith Wyatt, Ernesto Homeyer, Scott Parker, Al Bonhomme, Greg Harrison and Daniel Gilbert (just t
o name a few). Along with learning the standard curriculum of Musicians Institute, I performed in many styles such as Blues, R&B, Pop, Rock, and Metal.

Kecia T.

Elk Grove, CA

About Kecia

I took piano lessons as a child and my passion for music blossomed. I have been playing for over 30 years. I have always loved writing my own songs, and finally recorded a CD of original contemporary piano. I started teaching piano in 2007, and I am passionate about teaching my students proper techniques and concepts correctly so they will become proficient at reading and playing music. I have always connected easily with children and consider myself very fortunate to be able to teach the joys of music to children of all ages! I have a Bachelor's degree in Communications, I performed as a me
mber of a local college orchestra for 2 years, where I played second string violin and piano. I also have performed drama on stage. From 2011-2013 I have taught music classes to kindergarteners up to sixth graders at a local private elementary school. I am a member of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT).

*** Lesson Details ***
Poorly taught lessons do more damage. Improperly trained students will often have to start back at the beginning to undo bad habits. Why not teach them right the first time? I specialize in teaching beginning students in a fun learning environment. No two students are alike, and everyone learns at a different pace. I cater to your child and will find the best way to encourage them to learn. Your child will learn how to read and play written music proficiently, while learning the proper techniques and concepts correctly the first time. I focus half my lesson time on music theory, and I use fun music apps on my iPad to reinforce note recognition, rhythm counting, and many other fundamental music concepts.

I am a member of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT).

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room, grand piano, upright digital full keyboard piano, patio for parents to wait.

*** Specialties ***
I like to incorporate discovery learning and step-by-step teaching methodology in my lessons, where I help the student arrive at the answers on their own, thus improving the process of concept retention, and building their confidence. My focus is mostly on building a strong musical foundation where my students will learn to read and play written music proficiently.

Sarah N.

Elk Grove, CA

About Sarah

I received my BA in music from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. While the school is not well known for music, the program stressed being as well rounded in as possible with a "Learn by doing" attitude permeating every class. I believe that this attitude is essential to all musicians, regardless of what style they are interested in. No matter if you wish to sing pop or opera, the basics are the same. I emphasize singing in a healthy manner and taking care of your voice. I also believe that most people are capable of singing well.
I have been involved in several Opera scene performances, most n
otably performing the role of Lucia in the Mad Scene from "Lucia di Lammermoor" and the Marschallin in the finale of "Der Rosenkavalier." With this background, I can help my students learn how to sing in other languages as well as help them with performance practice, proper posture, basic music reading, and giving them access to resources for more learning opportunities.
I prefer to teach beginning to intermediate students. My ultimate goal is to help my students love music as much as I do and to find the voice that is hidden in them.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will be separated into three main categories:

1. Warm-ups
This will ready your voice to sing and help prevent damage to your vocal chords
2. Practice
At this point, you will be singing through the piece we have chosen for you to work on. This will take up
the bulk of the lesson.
3. Questions and paperwork
The paperwork will simply be assignment sheets and any other photocopies I feel will help you become a better musician.

You will need a recording device of some sort so that you can listen to the lesson during the week. This will help you remember the warm-ups and the suggestions given for proper vocal production. If this is a problem, please mention it and we will figure it out.

Sheet music will be needed for any song you wish to practice in lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the living room, keyboard, music stand

*** Specialties ***
I was trained in classical voice, including opera, but I also am trained in pop and a little in musical theater.

Singing
Amazing Teacher. Kind, Caring, and Witty :)

I took lessons with Sarah for a couple month before moving to another city, and I wish I could have taken her with me! I'm a beginner singer that loves singing all generes, but really believed I was a hopeless cause when it came to singing. Sarah worked one on one with me to teach me proper breathing and exercises in order to keep my voice healthy and within a couple weeks I already saw improvement. She was patient to work out the bad habits I had picked up before I started taking lessons. I highly recommend Sarah. My voice and I thank her :)

Esther B.

Sacramento, CA

About Esther

I'm Esther, a very enthusiastic musician. I started out teaching myself piano and singing in a choir at the age of 9. I moved to the U.S. in 1992 and studied music for 10 years receiving my B.M. & M.A. in music at California State University of Sacramento. I studied and trained with Claudia Kitka & Jackie Victorino for voice and Kirsten Smith, Joan McDe, & Angel Mamn for piano. I have performed many solo concerts in the U.S. as well as South Korea.

I find a student's strengths and weaknesses using various ways to encourage each student. I am very patient, kind, flexible, and enthusiastic
and I love working with children as much as adults. I strongly support basic skills: sight-reading, pitch and tone.

I have 30 years experience teaching kids and adults private piano and 6 yrs voice coaching (early period to contemporary). I speak fluent Korean and English.

*** Lesson Details ***
My objectives: to help students powerfully communicate through the essence of music and aid the development of children and adults by finding their strengths and weaknesses and to develop their skills and show their musical talents. I emphasize basic skills, good sight-reading, and Solfege skills (Do-Re-Me...etc), vocal technique, vocal performance, and Alexandria technique. Students participate in their own recital and show their musical talents.

Lessons are held at either your home, or mine using composers from various time periods that speaks to the individual student.
Also,I do prefer to work a weekly student.
A beginner lesson may be 10-15 min. for warm-ups and scales, 10-15 min. theory and 10 min. playtime. In three to six months the student will be able to read sheet music and should be able to perform simple songs.

An intermediate lesson is longer, 45-50 min., with more focus on music from a specific chosen time-period. A specialty is preparation for voice and piano auditions for entering college.

I enjoy teaching children from age 5 up to adults. I also can teach beginner oboe and beginner guitar.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, electronic keyboard, guitar, oboe

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitar

*** Specialties ***
I teach the basic skills very strongly, and also encourage students and, challenge them, as well.
I also have new techniques for teaching voice and piano.
I do prefer to teach a weekly lesson.

Jon was a wonderful TA for the Workplace Communication's course I taught in 2012-13. He was available and eager to assist students with their projects and papers. Jon had a wonderful demeanor and explained things clearly and in detail to students that were having issues with a particular assignment related to grammar, communication skills, essays, and presentations. I would highly recommend him as a tutor.

I was a part of the staff team that Jon was a tech admin for and witnessed first hand his proficiency and quality of work when coding features and applications on a web platform. He patiently taught me when I was a total newcomer and through our time working together I learned enough from him to be completely self sufficient in those areas. Great teacher and coder.

The 10 Best Songs for Sight Singing Practice
Sight singing practice is an excellent way to round out your skills as a vocalist. Here, Saint Augustine, FL teacher Heather L. shares the 10 best songs to get started with...   Attending my alma mater, Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, was a lot like going to sight singing boot camp. They can be daunting, can’t they? Especially when they’re only asking for 16-32 bars of a song. What can you possibly show off in THAT short amount of time? The Evolution of the Piano: From the Harpsichord to the Modern Grand
Whether you are just starting out or your piano learning days are far behind you, you may have often wondered how the modern piano came to be. And you may be surprised to learn that although the modern piano is over 300 years old, its look and design has remained largely unchanged over the years. The piano is an amazing stringed instrument that uses percussion to create a full, resonating sound. Not sure how to clean your piano? Check out these tips from Olympia, WA teacher Tali H...   Perhaps you’ve heard the saying, “A clean room gives way to a clear mind.” Although I’m not so sure this logic follows for the piano (“a clean piano gives ways to clear playing”), it’s still important to keep your playing area relatively clutter-free and your piano tidy. While caring for the piano is simple, there are a few things to watch out for and some easy steps you can take to make the mai
