When I first begin teaching a student, I tell them that everyone has the ability to sing well no matter his or her experience. I also tell them that there are four things that a good singer must have: breathe control (air is your fuel, and must be used efficiently and effectively to give you the best sound), posture (in order to have access to your air and prevent vocal damage you must practice good posture habits), diction (how you pronounce words when singing can impede or improve vocal tone, as well as help or hinder the audience in understanding the lyrics) and finally and most importantly, passion. Passion is how emotionally connected you are to music and is what really allows the singer to connect with his or her audience.

Unless you're a career-chorister, the concept of sight reading music is probably going to at best make you slightly nervous, and at worst paralyze you with fright. However, at some point, probably when you join a choir or perhaps go to an audition, you're going to have to face that hurdle. Sight reading comes easier to some singers than others, but it's not some mythical task akin to retrieving a golden fleece; sight-reading, even for the more able, is a learned skill, and there are several sig …

As a singer, what should you do if you find yourself under the weather? How bad is singing with a cold? Check out these tips from voice teacher Katie B... It's no fun being sick. It can affect your singing, which can be stressful if you have rehearsals or performances coming up -- and all that stress won't help you feel any better.
